The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

Hmmmmm… it still feels weird to refer to jumping to lightspeed right after physically bursting through a barrier as ‘lightspeed skipping.’

If poppasketti wishes to share the clip, he showed me something he did to show the TIEs continue along their trajectory without jumping to lightspeed. However, that would fit into an Option A scenario.

Option A) The company breaks through the ice wall and enters hyperspace, ending the scene. TIEs may or may not be seen following, though they do not enter hyperspace. Then, when they arrive at base, reference to lightspeed skipping is removed. Rey and Poe start to argue in medium closeups while Finn presumably walks toward them, asks them to calm down, and they proceed to talk about the spy.

Option B) The company breaks through the ice wall and enters hyperspace, followed into hyperspace by TIEs like one second later, ending the scene. Then, when they arrive at base, they refer to “lightspeed skipping,” evidently something Poe must have done to evade the TIEs offscreen. Rey and Finn hug, Finn uses sarcasm, etc.

I like Option A for restoring a sense of, well, SENSE to how hyperspace works. TLJ doesn’t seem to leave room for TIEs that can instantly chase the Falcon into hyperspace one second later. Even if Option B were what was put into theaters, I still would probably have fan edited Option A into existence, honestly.

However, Option B is still way better than the theatrical. So, I’ll take it if it is needed to sell the removal of the main lightspeed skipping sequence.

Lol “ice speed”

Thinking ahead, how might we do a group commentary track? Through Zoom? We could stream the movie through there and each maintain our own recordings of our own voices, to be edited together later.

We could either make it a real party or just have 3-5 commentators. As long as sync isn’t an issue a party would be okay, but I would be a little concerned about sync.

I further finessed the audio since posting the clip. The music now feels like it picks up a but more of the slack. Each channel of the first clip before the transition fades out as gracefully as it can, after the last TIE sound and before the next sounds of the omitted sequence. The soundtrack piece comes in at the right time and volume level for each track.

If poppasketti prefers option B, then that’s good enough for me! lol

I have two options:

  • Falcon escapes the TIEs and no reference is made to lightspeed skipping (current workprint)

or

  • Falcon jumps to lightspeed, and the TIEs follow before the scene ends on a sort of cliffhanger. Falcon arrives safe and they reference “lightspeed skipping” that apparently let them escape.

But I won’t be using the actual lightspeed skipping scene itself, as it makes zero goddamn sense and is way worse than the starlight problem in TFA. It’s not a matter of fuzzy logic, it totally undermines an important mechanic of Star Wars for no real reason.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

Well I’m not a fan of the shockwaves anyway, and I didn’t really have great ways to remove the other two. I didn’t want the battle of Yavin to only have one OOT shot at the most critical moment. So I removed the DSII shockwave so it’s not like all OT and only OT explosions have them.

I tried to list ROTJ on the site but there was a cryptic error that I couldn’t figure out and I haven’t gone back yet to try again.
