That’s real nice. Sounds like a wonderful way to watch ROTJ.
That’s real nice. Sounds like a wonderful way to watch ROTJ.
Would you mind posting a cap of the hardcoded subtitles?
has any thought been given to trimming the opening notes of burning homestead for the ghost scene to help make the tacked on music flow in a little better? I can post a mockup of it shortly!
And I’m sure I’m retreading the same ground, not that I remember, but it seems that the Burning Homestead theme pretty much has to come in and out at that exact moment. Otherwise there’s a definite gap in score that does not feel right. No music at all is extremely underwhelming. So not only does it seem to need to be that piece, pretty much exactly as it is, too.
Okay, having thought about it some more and letting a break take place first, I will reiterate my prior decision to edit out the mention of lightspeed skipping. I think this is less distracting overall. It’s a tough call and you can make a good case for either route.
In other news, Skenera sent me a great Naboo shot based on snooker’s output without the SD and explosion elements. I will include this in the workprint, which I hope to have ready by the weekend.
The Crispin one
I can only include things I’ve actually read.
Luke lifting the X-Wing and the musical accompaniment. It’s a nice inversion to having sunk it as seen in TLJ, itself a nod to the “can’t do it” attitude in ESB. Not to mention the wonderful friendship motif that precedes Yoda’s theme in the scene.
I don’t know, I don’t want to commit to it right now. Is it that big of a deal on its own?
Why don’t I sleep on it and see how I feel about the scene later. Maybe it’d truly be better to leave the conversation alone. I will make the call and stick with an answer.
I’m not sure. I’m using FCPX for that phase of things after exporting from FCP7 (which was end-of-life’d in 2011). The end of the road is near to me in terms of NLE for the near future.

If anyone has video editing software that can process LUTs, you should be able to plug in skenera’s LUTs. There’s just three: one for Exegol that I am planing to apply at 50%, one for Pasanna that I plan to apply at 100%, and an overall green reduction for the rest that I plan to apply at 75%.
And that was the resolution last time this was vetted. I think Finn “teleporting” is a non-issue, and his lack of highlighting in the scene is the only real issue. And it’s something that, while odd, probably wouldn’t have caused us to bat an eye in the theater.
Also, I don’t think moving the horse shot works. It feels even weirder. So I think what we got last time around stands.
I can give it a shot, at any rate! Dunno whether it’ll be today, though.
And about lightspeed skipping. I think earlier I was concerned that it would appear sloppy for people watching the edit who have seen the theatrical film. However, I have to concern myself only with hypothetical first-time viewers. So maybe it’d be better overall to leave in the references to lightspeed skipping, though I am certainly leaving the sequence itself out.
EDIT: Turns out I did end up including Poe saying, “Head’s up,” so that’s better than I thought before I looked. I can still give the idea of moving the horse closeup a try and see how it plays.
I think as Poe and Rey are talking we see several shots of either closeups or tight medium shots. So there’s plenty of time for Finn to walk up. I think it’s better this way than lightspeed skipping dialogue that doesn’t make sense if the TIEs don’t follow them into hyperspace. The only other way is to leave the scene untouched and to assume the term refers to jumping to lightspeed either through the ice or without calculations.
The horses arriving is a little abrupt but has to be that way to remove the compass. I tried to have “Head’s up” during the shot of Rey looking toward the DS but we decided it was more important to have a Sith whisper in that moment.
The open scene restructuring feels better to me this way, after being convinced (!), in part because we don’t cut from the first sequence to a Falcon action sequence right away and get to our protagonist earlier, pairing the dyad.
The whispers for the Sith blade are more subtle than would be ideal, but it seems like something that one would notice on a second viewing, if not a first.
Yeah I must’ve neglected to remove that change.
I agree, which is why it hasn’t been considered past that mock-up. There hasn’t been anything to match the feel of Burning Homestead.
I don’t really get why it seems to be in the ‘wrong key.’ It doesn’t sound off to me when blended into the scene.
Here’s an old test from the last time we hashed this out, using the music intended for TFA that was replaced with Burning Homestead:
I even tried to see if it could be put back into that moment in TFA, but it would affect sync in order to do and I am not willing to go through all that it would take to do another update to that project. Plus not everyone watching will have the whole 9000 setup.
I’m open to mock-ups of other pieces of music. We’ve gone over this before at pain, and haven’t found anything better.
Hal I’ll make a list of replies to this thread. I have no skill, but I can do that at least!

Were it not “Burning Homestead” from ANH, it’d be totally appropriate to harken back to triumphant music as Rey first harnesses the Force. You’re right about that. I think it’s the best option available, and it works in the moment.
I’ve got a more jammed up week than usual ahead of me but I’m hoping to get a final workprint out soon, which will serve as a sync-locked reference as the final elements are finished up and trickle in. I’ll have to find time at some point to do a commentary.
One thing someone could do that would help a lot… would be to generate a list of everyone who has posted in this thread. I hate to ask, and it might just be worth it not to out together such a list this time because there are dramatically more posts than there were for TFA:R and TLJ:L.
I searched for Obi-Wan’s “I’m so sorry,” but that came up first and so I used it. Lol
It doesn’t fit the mood of the scene, and to me feels very grounded in the prequels. I promise I’m not out to get you, but I don’t think I’m for this one, either. 😕

Good thread. I approve.
That’d be a tall order, rebuilding the entire soundtrack for the scene(s).
^ It was a little awkward, to hear that iconic thoughtful music and think, “If you just believe, then huge rocks will crush your enemies.”
You’re all right, Broom Kid. Doesn’t hurt to reevaluate. But like I said, I don’t want to cut it. I do see both sides and I’m certain someone will make that change in their own version. I can imagine a project of “TROS:A Plus All Those Little Things That People Wanted To See,” or a little more aggressive version. Lol
The music. I also am not a fan of using Burning Homestead for the third time, but we just couldn’t find any other music to fit the moment. Can’t say I’ve tried it without music at all, though. Let me render a test clip and we can see about it.
I agree it’s a cool idea and has a lot going for it. I watched the whole opening section that way to try it out and it felt rushed to me. I like the opening “going on a wordless journey” montage aspect of the opening and never had a problem with it. For a movie that often feels breakneck paced, having it open this way is at least something to offset that aspect.
I sincerely applaud this move in another fan edit, but I don’t think it should be this one!
