Well, I don’t think moving that shot to buffer the transition before the heroes run toward the trooper and meet Lando works due to the music playing. It’d be hairy, and so I think what’s there at present is our best bet here. No sync adjustment needed.

I tweaked some other audio stuff: made Rey’s line about the mask slightly louder, the KoR lines in the desert a little quieter, and added more of a ‘telephone’ filter to RogueLeader’s trooper lines.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

The problem is that both make use of quite a bit of work that was done on the 2011 masters. (Clips from Revisited, DeEd, FX done for this project, etc.) Those clips would have to be adjusted to fit with the new masters. It’d just have to be a whole new project, and there’d been to much already done. See what Ridley did with the Falcon scene in ANH, for one thing.

As long as all three feel consistent enough, I’m happy with them as the SE option when I wand that. And I love what’s being done to restore the OOT from these new masters when I prefer to watch that.

Great work on this, Hal.

Watched workprint 6.1. It looks really good, and my feedback is minimal.

  • For the edit in the desert scene, the cut at 23:40 is pretty obvious. I suggest using the clip at 24:02 and placing it at 23:40 as a break, THEN cut to them running.

I can try that.

  • Would you consider putting in a couple establishing shots of Ahch-To at 1:26:28? It’s such a hard cut here and it’s our first time seeing the island in this movie, and doesn’t give much context. Is there a shot or two from TFA or TLJ that could flesh out this sequence a little more? In my dreams, I’d love to see a wipe to seeing Ren’s TIE fighter fly toward the planet, and THEN establishing shot of the island, and THEN Rey burning the TIE.

As it is I stuck with the original music and used the corresponding (but different) moment in the OST for the original establishing shot used later. I like that the new shot isn’t a repeat of a shot from before, but I do agree it’s one of many abrupt cuts in the movie as it was.

  • In Kylo Ren’s mask montage, Rey says, “You’re a creature in a mask” at 18:08. But it’s hard to hear over the music. It’s an important line. Could it be moved just a second or two later so it is more audible?

If DominicCobb could make that change I’ll use it. I have the entire scene as a single clip so I couldn’t modify it. I could probably find which channels the line is in, and raise the volume slightly for that line.

  • I’m a big fan of the Knights of Ren dialogue. I do think you should consider adding one of the lines in the helmet rebuilding scene, but that’s just my opinion.

I really think a subtle approach to their added voices works better in the final film, but I also like all their added lines in the demo reel.

If you’re reading, Burbin, the first chance idea would only affect sync for two or three subtitled lines. So if you sync them to the current workprint, I can easily just readjust those couple lines once you get me the subtitle files.

Tagline: Every saga has an end…

Synopsis: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gets an overhaul to serve as a conclusion to the Star Wars saga. Pacing, character journeys, and story continuity are improved via an unprecedented fan editing collaboration. A layer of polish and care applied to a relentlessly fast-paced film. Subtle character tweaks. And a few new surprises.

Running time is 138 minutes. Same “features” as TLJ, but there should be Spanish subtitles as well.

TFA: “Do you mind?” Luke asks. “I was just about to…” He gestures to the cliff. “Oh right.” Rey says, embarrassed and dropping the saber back to her side. “Maybe come back in a minute?” Rey nods, turning to go. “I’ll be back in a bit.” She looks around. “Looks like the sun’s coming out.”

The level of pedantry of that last sentence is perfect.

I think it’s about time to finish up with cover artwork. I remember seeing awesome cover artwork months ago, but I think it still needed some of the details to be filled in with text. If we can get that completed and get that to me, it’ll be one less obstacle to getting V1 out in the near future.

Burbin is working on subtitles in, I believe, English, French, and Spanish. I’ll get chapter stops generated, and try to record a commentary track (probably split across two sittings after everyone else goes to bed).

Can’t help but agree; I’ll see how it sounds with just “what?” and nothing more.

And I gotta say: I am genuinely surprised by how much BETTER this newer computer performs than either of my previous two Macs. It’s only 3 years newer, but MAN. Even booting into my old hard drive to run Sierra, things are dramatically more fluid. I can actually… use FCP7 and FCPX like a human being. Like, it actually… plays things back in a way that lets me see and hear what’s happening.

It honestly makes me want to find some other fan edit project to work on now!
