Good discussion, revisiting an idea from earlier. But I will leave the scene alone altogether. Anyone who desires to tinker with this should have an east time doing so.

One last observation is that the spice runner thing pays off Finn’s “how do you know how to do that?” line as Poe hot wires a speeder. It’s true we removed the other two links in the chain (due to the lightspeed skipping scene) but that one remains.

For Zorri and Rey, I see three options:

  1. Leave it alone. Zorri recognizes Rey’s skill and gives her a nod of respect. Rey accepts her compliment and extends her hand. Going into the following scene, we understand Zorri has decided to help.

  2. Rey owns the other crew members, presumably killing them all since we don’t see them again. She holds a gun to Zorri’s head, asking for her help. Zorri, who we imagine wouldn’t act out of cowardice, reluctantly admits her willingness to help by responding with just “okay.”

  3. Rey owns the other crew members. She holds a gun to Zorri’s head, voicing her desire for help. She retracts her saber and extends her hand, assuming Zorri’s cooperation.

I wouldn’t worry about the scene feeling weird coming after Chewie’s supposed death, ala Ben Kenobi.

And while I’m mainly focused on the movies, I know the EU will pick up on and flesh out Poe’s backstory. So for our purposes here I really don’t mind. (It’s only an issue because of the EU anyway; live by the EU, die by the EU.)

As I said, the only part to the scene I’d be likely to change is Zorri’s line to Rey. I do like her response of “I care.” I’ll probably just leave this scene alone aside from the already-removed line and the crackly saber effect.

Once again I think you’re on the money, Jar Jar.

The only thing there that I’m inclined to agree with is the reverence paid to Rey by Zorri saying she thinks she’s okay. However, I recall fielding that idea dozens or hundreds of pages ago and someone convinced me not to for reasons I can’t recall. I think it was so that Zorri doesn’t appear to only help them out of a gunpoint threat.

Maybe Luke hallucinated a second Sun as he was dying from focusing so hard.

The novelization suggests that the Ach-To scene begins near dusk, continues overnight, and ends with the sunrise. If that can be realized well and without making the scene difficult to see, it could be a good way to imply a longer stay on the planet. Especially now that the 16-hour ticking clock has been removed. Yeah they’re in a hurry, but that specific element is gone.

RISE. Anyone feel up to the task? Obviously we will want to use jonh’s haircut footage once finalized, but the work done to the footage can be applied to this footage. This isn’t needed, but could be a nice alteration. I’d say better as subtle; I don’t want it to look like the theater’s bulb burned out. Just enough to convey the time of day using cinema parlance.

I’d also like to see a Shaw version as an alternate, as it really has merit. However, Hayden feels right for the moment because you know if they’d put ghosts in there they absolutely would’ve (and might’ve) shot Hayden for the scene.

However, Shaw would make sense as it seems the rule is that the Force ghosts appear as the age at which they died. Luke and Anakin have their injuries and missing body parts restored.

I don’t accept Hayden’a ghost for ROTJ because it just doesn’t belong there. It does here, and I’d probably stick with it but would love a Shaw version as an alternate. Now that I’ve got more Google drive space to work with perhaps I could host both to choose from.

A voice clip of Shaw would be a nice touch, I agree there too.

I’m not certain whether jonh is still planning to pursue a Shaw ghost, and he sort of pops up as he pleases once in a while.

I don’t have any preferences for the Luke figure, just whatever you can put together that looks feasible to have been made by those aliens. It doesn’t necessarily need to look as crude as the Canto Bight slave kids’ since this would have been made by adults for a show rather than duct taping trash to make a secret toy.

Thought I’d go see what CaptainFaraday was planning for this same sequence for his novelization rewrite. Might be good for inspiration:

CaptainFaraday said:

“Let’s split up, see what the locals know,” Poe said.
He and Finn headed off, but Rey’s legs were suddenly rooted in place. A pair of Acky Acky were performing a puppet show, and one of them had just used a word she recognised.
“Di sana berdiri Skywalker!”
All of the children gasped. Some of them cheered. Rey looked more closely at the puppets.
A little human figure made of twisted-up wire and tiny cloth robes stood in front of a blast door made of paper, the puppeteer pulling a string to make his arm brandish a little green wire sword at a puppet of an AT-AT walker. The walker had just fired some little pieces of red paper at him, to absolutely no effect. Then the children whooped and cheered again as the little wire man leapt at the walker, and the puppeteer flipped it over backwards with a cowardly little wail.
Luke’s saber on Crait that day had been blue, and Rey noticed immediately, as someone who lived in the burned-out shell of one for the better part of her life, that the walker had been designed after the old Imperial kind. She smiled. Even if some of the details weren’t perfect, she thought, the important part of the story was still there.
The children stared wide-eyed, sometimes gasping, sometimes laughing, as other exploits of puppet Luke were depicted. A mother dressed in bright pink sat amongst them, bouncing a pudgy infant in her arms. Instead of the long trunks of the adults, the children had rather stubby little noses and plump cheeks. Rey’s smile doubled as the baby chuckled at Luke knocking down a round dish that was clearly supposed to be the second Death Star.
Something tugged on her tunic, and she looked down to find a young Acky Acky girl in a green robe trying to get her attention. Rey knelt before her.

Yeah, he should look like he’s 30 and healthy.

We couldn’t possibly… deepfake that… right?

JEDIT: I recall thinking, though, that having him rejuvinated into… this ugly SOB actually validates a change I made to Episode III (and that L8wrtr and Kerr made before me) to depict his face transformation as a revelation rather than an injury.

Yeah, I’d be open to a “here you go” whole solution about the spice runner thing, but I won’t lean that way.

Let me try to say that a different way. I’m not gonna push for it but if anyone does want to pursue this I could add it to Ascendant if it feels fluid and legit. To me, though, there’s not really an issue with the original. And I’m sure there’ll be EU stuff to fill in his story.
