Backstroke of the West Dubbed Version (Released)
Time

Agreed. I'm sure all of us would love to know how this came to be. The voice acting in general is top-notch, and almost all the characters sound nearly identical to the real thing. (With the obvious exceptions of Palpatine, who is different but appropriate in an odd cartoon villain sort of way in my opinion, and the truly bizarre 12-year-old gender confused Yoda :)

I've had a few cool religion influenced dreams like the one where Jesus, after being pelted with stones while carrying his own gravestone, got fed up and started swatting people away with said gravestone. Then, when the stone-pelting mob became too numerous and was closing in, he ran towards a cliff and jumped off.  A few moments passed and he came suddenly roaring back into view atop a blue turtle and flew off into the sky.

Then there was the one where I broke into a dinosaur library and uncovered the shocking truth that the world was created by a Dumptruck with a beard.

...random absurdity or was there some meaning to it all?

While cleaning today, I came across a forgotten picture I drew a couple years ago while bored at work.

It was labelled "Jesus and Hercules: The Inspired Missions"

It featured Jesus in the background, saying "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you, Hercules!"

In the foreground, Hercules was holding someone by the shirt, with his fist pulled back and ready for action, responding with "I'd have others knock sense unto me were I a heathen, Jesus!"

It made me giggle, and I figured this was an appropriate thread to share it.

Retro Gaming - a general discussion thread
Time

The most awesome gaming system I've ever owned was my recently deceased Dingoo A320.

For those unaware, it was a handheld Chinese system that emulated Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Sega Genesis, and a few others. It also had some native games that had 3D graphics and could play some movie and music files, pick up FM radio, etc. Cheaply made, but awesome nonetheless. There was a community of users that improved on or created new emulators so, after a little research and updating, it ran most games fairly smoothly.

But my 5 year old daughter dropped it while playing "old Mario Kart" and it ceased to function.

So now I'm trying to save up for a Yinlips, which is similar, but can also handle N64 and PS1.

Will George Lucus keep editing the movies?
Time

I have no doubt the they will continue to be altered. Most of the changes/additions I could live with if the originals were properly preserved. But 'Jedi Rocks'... that just pulls me out of the moment every time.

Maybe it would be fun if with each new release, they replace the song in Jabba's Palace with whatever is #1 on the pop charts at the time!

That, and adding yells to what was previously wordless self-sacrifice is mildly annoying. Like Vader's "NO!" in the Jedi blu-ray, and the now undone scream from Luke in the '97 incarnation of Empire. It reminds me of public restrooms, on a not-quite-related note. I seem to be one of the few men that can go into a restroom and do my business without grunting. No need to vocalize. Just do it!

What really gets me, though, is that it seems even the prequels aren't safe from tinkering. Lucas had absolutely every tool at his disposal to make those exactly how he wanted them, and he STILL feels the need to alter them. I think he's addicted.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

If slower settings lead to only a very slight increase in fine detail, I'd still say it's worth the extra wait.

Of course, I have no idea what specifically you're referring to. But just sayin' that this is an important project since this is likely the closest we're going to get to a true HD remaster of the original for a long long time. So any little bit extra that can be squeezed out of it is worth it in my book :)

It's almost here! Thank the maker!

This is going to make Speedy Gonzales look like regular Gonzales!

Exclamation points all around!

By the way, I haven't seen this mentioned, but will there be a DVD version of this? If not, I may need to look into how best to convert an MKV to DVD format for friends who don't have blu-ray players yet. And I'd say this is definitely a project that begs for a dual layer disc as opposed to a mere DVD-5.

HD-DVDs and DVDs Superior to Blu-Ray
Time

I'm most certainly against the digital removing of elements from older films like wires, matte lines, even those ugly boxes around the ships in so many Star Wars shots. I'm a firm believer that film makers should be proud that they did the best they could under the constraints and circumstances of the time, and use the new tools and experience gained over time to improve future projects, rather than to try rewriting the past.

But since they can pull you out of the moment and all that, I'd encourage some responsible tinkering with contrast and color balance to minimize the appearance of these things without actually removing them.

So I had a dream a few years back that's really stuck with me.

I broke into the Dinosaurs' computer lab and started to dig around in their files... and I discovered the shocking truth that the world was created by a Dump Truck with a beard.

Thoughts?

Already having learned this stuff before, it is still refreshing to learn about genetics and the amazingly complex chemical reactions that comprise replication, translation, and ultimately what leads to a life form.  I fail to see how this could have arisen without a God.

I've though about that quite a bit in my hours alone at work. I think it's very unlikely that all this could happen on its own on the first try. I will not dismiss the possibility of a God without proof, but I would say that in an infinite universe given infinite time, all possible outcomes could occur. Assuming the universe recycles itself periodically like all things in nature seem to do, if there's even a possibility life could begin without divine origins then it would happen eventually. It could have very well taken 80 million  or so universal cycles for conditions to be just right for life to happen on our tiny dot in the cosmos. That's my two pennies. However, that idea depends on the rules governing chemical reactions leading to life being in place already, which then begs the question of how these molecular and sub-atomic rules are established.

HD-DVDs and DVDs Superior to Blu-Ray
Time

I recently downgraded Highlander from Blu-ray back to DVD in my collection.

I'm not sure if it's solely the higher resolution or some other difference in the video but at the end, when Connor is floating and being molested by animated ghoulies, the wires holding him up were painfully visible. I knew they were there, obviously, but I never could really see them until I watched the BD and it was like I was suddenly watching "Flying Lessons" from Monty Python's Flying Circus. I know these things are part of how movies were made back then and couldn't always be hidden, but in this particular version of Highlander it just grabbed me by the eyes and screamed "Look at me!"

Perhaps some films just aren't meant to be seen in HD.

But aside from that, I'd still recommend the Immortal Edition DVD above the Blu-ray because of the Queen music videos included on the disc.

Backstroke of the West DUB (Released)

Has anyone else tried muxing the audio file with the retail DVD?

I need to do a little tinkering to figure things out, but the opening theme wasn't quite synced so I adjusted the timing and it seemed fine at first, but in browsing the movie I noticed my altered audio track was out of sync again at the end (but only slightly)

So maybe it was only the opening music that was off and not the rest of the movie?

Info: "Return of the Jedi with Questionable Subtitles" or "Admiral Edbaby's Last Stand"
Time

'ello all.

I’d mentioned on the Backstroke of the West thread that I once had a bootleg copy of Return of the Jedi with some odd subtitles.

I finally got ahold of it again and after a little research I found that it was from the 1997 SE Five Star Collection bootlegs, so many of you may already have this. As far as I could tell, Jedi was the only one of the Trilogy that was out of the ordinary.

Now, these subtitles aren’t nearly as epic as the legendary Backstroke, but they are still quite amusing. For anyone who wants a fresh perspective on the ROTJ SE but doesn’t want to download an entire dual-layer DVD (or if you’d just prefer a sharper anamorphic picture despite the further alterations and color issues introduced in 04), I’ve ripped the subs and tweaked them ever so slightly to synch up with the 2004 official retail DVD so they can be easily inserted using muxman or whatever. For my personal copy I used the 2004 SE video and the french audio track so I wouldn’t be distracted by what they’re really saying 😃

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

Just need to add Ric Olie in the background saying "You catch on pretty quick" afterwards and it's fixed.

But seriously, I think it's fine as it is. It reminds me that this is just an expensive B-movie :)

He's not the same pilot that says the really awkward "Copy... gold... leader" in ROTJ, is he?
