Here’s the new version of the purple saber switch using the clip Hal sent me:
I could take a lot of those. Man, what a difference a handful of those would make.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
Yeah, it is true that in cannon it is not at all widely known that palpatine is a sith. I would personally prefer removing the line so it connected better with the OT and cannon.
Dude, it’s thirty years later and said by a guy deeply involved in the war. Of course the Resistance would know Palps was a Sith even if the Galaxy at large didn’t know or care.
Do not DM me for edits. Whatever you’re looking for I don’t have it.

Just to have them both together to compare…

Three shot version:

Two shot version flows better imo.

I like the idea of adding connecting shots like that, but I think the transition with the wayfinder works really well as is.
Something I suggested earlier in this thread:
List of space/ships shots that could hopefully be made by someone with WAY more skills than me:
- Space shot of Ochi’s ship approaching Kimji
- Shot of Rey in Ren’s TIE leaving Endor
- Shot of Rey in Ren’s TIE approaching Anch-To
- Shot of the Falcon leaving Endor and approaching Ajan Kloss
- Rey taking Luke’s X-Wing and leaving Anch-To in space
- A tease of Vader’s TIE leaving Endor
- The Falcon in space approaching Tatooine
Those would be really cool! Maybe even adding a few “ship landing” shots?
I saw a review that pointed out how the rushed pacing isn’t helped by the lack of landings in the film - the ship approaches a planet, and the characters are immediately walking around in the next shot, halfway to their goal. Now I can’t unsee it.

The shame of it is that these shots are probably complete, just sitting on a hard drive in a studio.

Hmm. Truth be told I think Rey leaving Endor is probably the only one that I’d go for of those. Or the Falcon approaching Ajan Kloss (couldn’t do both though).
On the topic of things that feel missing, this reminds me, is there some way we can find a way to show the landing gear get busted when the Falcon saves Rey from the hangar? Stormtroopers shoot it or something?

I forget if any of the troopers actually fire in that scene, but if they do, it presumably wouldn’t be an impossible bit of VFX to add some laser bolts hitting the rear of the Falcon. Then you’d just need to do a very quick insert shot of the landing gear being hit and shooting sparks, which I imagine (although I’m not a VFX person) could be created with an extreme closeup of a good quality textured digital model, which must be available out there somewhere, and rendered with matching lighting.

Sure you could do all that, but if you draw even more attention to that problem people will wonder even more why the Falcon couldn’t just hover down to land like it does any other time. The SFX shot would have to convey that the blast hit a repulsorlift, making the Falcon lose altitude in that shot before limping out of the hangar.

As for the discussion of the 2 vs 3 Mustafar establishing shots, I sometimes have to remind myself that the Yavin base in ANH got 8 consecutive establishing shots.

Oh damn… You’re right! It never really clicked with me. 😄

Poe’s line about the landing gear and the shot of Rey opening a wire panel are both so brief that they’re hard to register, so when you see the image of the crash landing you’re kinda like “what?” Literally anything that would show it visually take damage would work.

lol, played it in my head while making sound effect and counting on my fingers.

Maybe as the stormtroopers are blasting away at the Falcon, one of the shots could have a bigger explosion on impact, implying that it hit something important.
I think you also show the engines blinking out as the flies toward Kef-Bir/Endor, implying they had to just sort of glide the rest of the way to the surface. It would help show why they literally crash landed, rather than just land gently without using the landing gear.
An insert shot drawing attention to this strikes me as unnecessary. The Falcon get shot at and we find in the next sequence there’s something broken. I mean, it might not hurt if done in a way that feels organic. But it seems like a lot of effort for someone to go through.

Maybe with one or two shots re-arranged and some extra lasers added, it could sell the effect:
I’ll put this under the category of “if anyone does want to produce this I’ll consider it but otherwise won’t think about again.”

Not only that, but those shots aren’t even the focus of the scene; the focus is on Rey, so it’s even more distracting. I think RogueLeader has a good idea - just comp in an extra explosion effect as they’re firing. There are a lot of places it could be added:
Maybe it could even be a large-ish explosion effect, as if someone fired a rocket launcher at the ship?
Also, I just noticed - The troopers are firing at the ship, they all get pushed backward and fall over from the Falcon’s exhaust, and then when Poe says, “Finn, move fast!” more troopers are firing on the Falcon from off screen. But then the very next shot shows that they’re all still knocked down and no one is firing. I can’t imagine we’d be able to fix that, but it’s another fun little continuity error.
The Rise of Skywalker: Untold - A “Rey Nobody” edit of Ep. IX - Coming Soon
I guess it’s about time for another “where are we” post. By my records, here’s everything currently outstanding. Things that, if they were suddenly all turned in, I would begin encoding:
Sherlockpotter’s idea to remove Lando line “Leia sent me a transmission” (I just haven’t done it yet)
Depict Kylo’s TIE with a different color stripe after his first one gets blowed up (poppasketti working on it)
Have Rey’s saber sputter or crap out a little at end of DSII duel (Movies Remastered working on)
Have both sabers spark and smoke like it’s Friday night after Palpatine gets blowed up (Movies Remastered working on, or perhaps is finished)
Pasaana puppet show with Luke being a legend (snooker and/or RogueLeader filming and compositing elements - will also need a vocal dub to replace the one or two lines with something about Skywalker)
Remaining footage of the crackly blue saber (I believe Movies Remastered is helming the shots that weren’t already done by kewlfish or Luka Frik)
Fixed Jedi haircut footage from jonh to then be run through by NeverAr for regrading
So clearly there’s still several things outstanding but they are being tracked and will all come together in time. For the thousandth time, you’re all awesome and it’s an ongoing privilege to steer us along.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
Oh, so we are removing the whole “Leia sent me a transmission” thing? Not a deal breaker, but I still don’t understand how that is a good change. It eliminates the head canon possibility that Lando was NOT stranded on Pasaana for the past 20 years.
I’d rather not ruin a character to preserve some tension. But that’s just my opinion.
Help me understand. How does that line improve Lando’s character? He’d be there regardless. The only difference is whether Leia texted him to let him know they’d be in his neck of the woods.
And removing the line establishing Leia knew where he was doesn’t require us to believe in a huge coincidence, either. They’re tracing Luke’s steps by being there, which is the same event that leads Lando to be there. Leia didn’t call to tell him to go there or anything in any version.
And it doesn’t make any difference in terms of why they’d choose to follow the stranger, as the line doesn’t come until after they’ve all followed him into the trailer home.
JEDIT: You’re saying that line lets you suppose maybe Lando got a call from Leia and that’s why he is on that planet at that point in time?
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I don’t see how it eliminates that possibility. He shows up on Ajan Kloss later without Rey & co ever telling the Resistance where he was, so obviously he wasn’t “stranded” on Pasaana.
The line makes it a possibility that Lando was not on Pasaana when Leia sent him a message. She sent it because she knew about his previous experience there with Luke. So he travels to Pasaana, gets in a taxi, and finds the heroes to fill them in on what he knows.
With the line removed, it is heavily suggested that Lando has pulled a Luke Skywalker over the past 20 years and has given up on everything. He is rotting away on a desert planet, and hasn’t left it since he was with Luke.
I mean, yeah, I still don’t understand why Luke abandoned him on Pasaana. But I don’t see how this line explains that? All this line tells us is that Leia and Lando are in communication, which just adds more layers of convolution, imo.
Like I said though, if we could flesh out the scene to give Lando some actual development, that would be swell; but that’s a separate issue from this one line.
There’s nothing in the film to suggest he’s been there the whole time. The transmission implies he headed over there when he heard they needed help.
Dom please save us all lol
