The trailer was a complete miss for me. Definitely skipping it. What have they done to my Star Wars.
The trailer was a complete miss for me. Definitely skipping it. What have they done to my Star Wars.
I think it’s good they are releasing The Mandalorian and Grogu. I think this will be like TV Show and I’m excited to this in the movie theater.
Just a few weeks ago nobody I knew even knew there was a Star Wars movie coming out so soon, but now all my coworkers and a lot of my family are talking about catching up on all the Disney+ shows to see the “Baby Yoda movie”.
Look, I’m going to see this. It’s Star Wars. I am going in expecting to be disappointed and underwhelmed personally, because I don’t like Star Wars for rinky dink little “fun” side adventures without any character development. I fell in love with Star Wars as a kid by watching A New Hope, seeing character progression, a large galaxy with rich lore and rabbit holes to dive into. I was 5 years old and I loved that slow, meaningful story. We live in different times now, and Hollywood has no faith in that kind of story sadly. I am taking my almost-5 year old son to this for his first Star Wars movie experience. I am sure he is going to love it and have a great time, and I’ll have a great time seeing him smile. But the real treat is coming up when we watch the OT at home for the first time together. I want THAT kind of Star Wars to return to theaters, the kind that forever changes a generation, not the kind that gives you a few smiles for an evening.

Hollywood has plenty of faith in stuff like that (they spend billions of dollars trying to replicate it all the time).
The problem here isn’t “Hollywood” it’s Dave Filoni/Jon Favreau. That’s it. Hollywood isn’t keeping Lucasfilm down. Lucasfilm is doing that to itself, because it is beyond terrified of its own Fandom, and they have good reason to be (It’s mostly terrible most of the time). It’s just that instead of finding better solutions (like not paying any real attention to it, hello Tony Gilroy) they keep doubling down on the worst decisions. Which they’re going to keep doing because they put one of the blandest, safest, least interesting creatives that’s ever come through there in charge of the entire studio’s creative output.
I want THAT kind of Star Wars to return to theaters, the kind that forever changes a generation, not the kind that gives you a few smiles for an evening.
No film series can live up to that level of expectation as a baseline standard. Star Wars arguably failed at it six years after it came out (it’s worth remembering the very first thing Star Wars did after breaking all box-office records was The Star Wars Holiday Special, too). A huge part of why Lucasfilm is so scared and reactive and frankly, DUMB so much of the time, is because of sentiments like “every movie has to be a generation changing event” - which they can’t do. Nobody can do that even semi-reliably. That bar is set way too high, and holding the series to that standard despite the fact it’s never gotten close to that beyond 1977 is basically inviting incessant disappointment most of the time.
There’s gotta be a way to accept that this thing can’t hit all home runs all the time, while still being frustrated that they’re TRYING to do that anyway, and trying it with some of the most boring, simple, not-even-great-on-average designated hitters in the business. Well, I know there’s a way, because I’m already there, LOL.
I’m continuing my tradition of going to the first screening available in my area. Even though my excitement for this is at a bare minimum; which just goes to show the sad state of Star Wars at this time…
My wife and I are going this Thursday at 7PM. I’m not expecting much based on what I’ve heard, but it seems it is a mostly full screening, and if my wife enjoys it and we have fun I guess that is good enough. 🤷🏻♂️

I thought the second trailer looked interesting, but everything they’ve shown since then has made me less and less interested in the movie. Having read the reviews, I’m probably just gonna wait for it to go onto Disney+.
Guess I will be doing the same. Had something come up and had to cancel Thursday. Maybe I’ll wait to watch on TV where Mando belongs…

It will probably be on D+ in 12 weeks. Per recent budget report from Variety, this needs to hit $412.5 million to break even on box office. I would guess it will do mid $300s and quickly be moved to streaming to make up the cash discrepency on streaming subs.

I almost wanted to see it when I heard Phil Tipett was involved. Favreau is a talented guy at what he does. Filoni is the one who seems out of his depth. directing cartoons is not the same thing as production of live action. And he really hasn’t directed a movie yet except for the Clone Wars animated. Filoni plans for the future of SW seems to be stay the course. They have no concrete plans.
Mandoverse wore its welcome out years ago. And how much Ahsoka and Filoniverse can people stomach. Well you’ll get another season of that at least.
Starfighter seems to be the only silver lining of any future project. Since they aren’t going to do anymore Star Wars Visions beyond the 9th Jedi spinoff. It will be all Filoni Star Wars all the time unless the Kinberg trilogy or that Rey movie happens.
A Filoni Heir to the Empire movie would have been positively received years ago. Star Wars interest is at an ebb going into 2027 a banner year for the franchise if there ever was one in recent memory.
The Original Star Wars remaster that at least is real Star Wars. and maybe Starfighter and Ahsoka will be good, or at least worthy of a smile and a chuckle. Not conquering the world of cinema like Star Wars used to do. fine make stuff people like and they will return.
There is no redoing the Disney trilogy or reversing the sentiment either own it or don’t. Or are they just going to continue tiptoe around it with nostalgia pieces and deepfake here and there, jumping around the timeline. It’s kind of pathetic. Make episodes 10 11 and 12.
The Han Solo movie wasn’t good but was better than most of the Disney plus shows, what does that say about this franchise. from movie juggernaut to middling streaming tv. If not for Andor I’d say Star Wars on tv was a net negative. if you remove all the cartoon shows people love to various degrees. Trying to Marvelize SW was the biggest mistake. biggest failure of all is their all one canon. comics, novels, games. films, tv. they retcon at will. they have no consistent plan or continuity. The story group why does that even exist? If directors can do whatever they please.

Saw it tonight at the 7pm showing. It had it’s moments, but overall I’d say it was low / mid. Certainly not horrible, but very predictable and somewhat forgettable IMO. Oh well. What did you all think?
I wouldn’t even consider it a movie. It’s like watching someone else play a video game. It has cutscenes, NPCs, hub areas, minibosses and bosses, and stealth segments where you play as a side character. It’s a “canon” playthrough where the player doesn’t die and respawn and they just go through the campaign defeating every enemy unless they’re captured in a cutscene. You could also think of it like an amusement park ride like Star Tours.
Which is not entirely bad, I like watching people play games sometimes. Original Mandalorian season 1 had a little bit of that feeling too, with the mission structure and the armor upgrades. It’s going to exhaust a lot of people though, since there’s no new ideas or character development, or anything other than action, and it isn’t broken up into 30 minute chunks.
It’s ironic that Martin “Not Cinema” Scorcese is in this since it’s way more of an example of what he was describing than any MCU movie.
It’s visually cool and the music is fine. It’s so strange that if this came out in the 70s or 80s it would be considered a groundbreaking visionary film on the same level as something like Blade Runner, at least aesthetically, but Star Wars is so oversaturated now that it feels pedestrian.
I’ll wait until its streamable.
A theatrical cut restoration teaser would’ve been the perfect promotional tool for this giant pile of meh.
Mando and Grogu opening night Box Office from Deadline 3 hours ago:
"EXCLUSIVE: Lucasfilm/Disney’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is pulling in around $12 million in North American Thursday night previews. It could be slightly lighter when the sun comes up in L.A. Shows began Thursday at 2 p.m.
That preview figure is slightly less than the Thursday cash made by 2018’s origin story Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was $14.1M. That turned into an $84.4M three-day and $103M four-day Memorial Day opening, not considered a starry start at all for the George Lucas-born, Disney-owned franchise. Mandalorian and Grogu in pre-weekend tracking is hoping to clear $80M-$100M over the four days.
The Jon Favreau-directed movie is playing at 4,300 theaters, including 425 Imax, with the full suite of PLF, 4DX, 3D and ScreenX. The wait-and-see of it all with the PG-13 Mandalorian and Grogu is whether the movie expands to families on Saturday and Sunday."

I went with the wife tonight. Actually had a fun time with this!
Some spoiler notes:
- Pacing was awful. Should have been 20 min shorter.
- Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White gave Razzie-worthy performances.
- I know it’s in the animated shows, but the Hutts speaking English takes some getting used to.
- Grogu is and always will be adorable.
- Mando is a badass but great to see him take some hits in this one. Grogu having to save him was fun to watch.
Fanedit ideas:
- Add “A long time ago…” to the start of the film.
- Seriously consider feeding ElevenLabs AI voice lines from Shameless and The Bear to give Jeremy Allen White a performance with actual emotion.
- Merge the Rotta in prison scenes if possible. Mando talks to shopkeeper, finds out about Lord. Lord tells him about the fixed fight. Mando goes to free Rotta.
- Although supercute, Grogu saving Din can be trimmed some for pacing. Have him meet the alien who gives him the antidote once perhaps.

THIS.
Honestly I got nothing against this film but I likely will never see this movie, simply Because I don’t care anymore. Book of Boba Fett ruined the Mandalorian series for me. Season two had a beautiful ending. Never saw season 3. Never will. It’s sad. I was that guy who used to be so excited for Star Wars now I have nothing but apathy. For me this franchise is done. It died when Luke died in Last Jedi. He was the heart and soul. Any good stuff like Andor is only going to compliment the main course which is Lucas’ films. And I say that as someone who is critical of the prequels. But even the prequels were interesting and had some magical novel ideas despite many being executed poorly. Disney SW biggest crime is that it’s boring. I miss Lucas’ imagination, the unique designs he approves and encourages of his crew and his action sequences. I really miss his action sequences. Also that creative push to do something that has never been done before was integral and now it’s gone
So I ended up doing something I didn’t think I was going to do, I watched The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters. I needed to kill a few hours Memorial Day weekend this was the one movie in theaters that I hadn’t seen so I went to the theaters and was pleasantly surprised. I thought that the movie was pretty good, well pretty good based on what I was expecting which was nothing more and nothing less than a fun adventure to kill a few hours with. It felt more like a movie than I was expecting giving the reviews I’ve seen which said it felt more like multiple episodes strung together. It’s also a film that continually gets better as it goes on. The opening scene was fine, and felt a lot like the opening to a James Bond movie, and then we got into the main movie which, while predictable is fun. Even though it annoyed me that he spoke English, I liked Rodha the Hut, who I thought was going to be more of a villain from the marketing material. The colliseum planet was fun, but I don’t think the movie became actually good until the final act, which actually finally gave Grogu something to do in a movie called The Mandalorian and Grogu. As a film that’s only aim is to be a fun action adventure it succeeded, but anyone looking for greater storytelling ambition, or character arcs will likely be disappointed.
I’m not too sure how happy Disney will be with the movie’s performance which looks to be doing about the same as Solo maybe evvn a bit worse giving second week drop predictions, which isn’t a good thing. It both makes a lot of sense, and feels really weird that they decided to come back to Star Wars in theaters with this movie. It makes sense because the Mandalorian is really popular, casual audiences really love Grogu, so if you’re going to come back into theaters it should be something people like, but also really weird because of the movie they actually made. Despite me really liking, it doesn’t feel like the type of movie you’d release in theaters, but I suppose that some film was going to have to be the first one back, and while it probably will be one of the lowest grossing Star Wars films, given the movies lower budget it could still do well enough to be profitable. Anyway the movie was fun and it is something I wouldn’t mind seeing again, but not in theaters once was enough, which might be a problem as these kind of films rely on fans coming back to watch the film multiple times in theaters.
i have seen some bad star wars movie before but never i have seen a star wars with 0 character development, 0 conflict and 0 things to say
3,5/10
idk
Based on the current trajectory and comparisons to similar Star Wars releases, The Mandalorian and Grogu is projected to finish its theatrical run with a global total between $325 million and $375 million. This figure would place it below Solo ($392.9 million), officially making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film in history.
It’s already getting passed up by the two recent horror movie releases (both of which I saw last night and enjoyed more than Mando and Grogu)… Poor word of mouth and the knowledge that this will come to streaming in a couple months absolutely sunk any hope of it having a few good weekends to at least break even. Just a bad financial decision all around to release this movie in 2026. It won’t be AS much of a financial loss compared to Solo since they didn’t break the bank on making this, but based on the poor performance here we can definitely expect Disney to make even less movies like this. I bet after Starfighter (the last real Kennedy legacy project, at least that we know of that isn’t in production hell) it will be a long time before we see another “one-off” film in theaters.
I think we can see Disney will no longer act like Star Wars can carry several parallel theatrical experiments. The projects that survive will be the ones that either launch a trilogy/saga or cleanly capitalize on Filoni’s existing story infrastructure.
Pre-2019 tons of parallel theatrical announcements
2019 - Rise of Skywalker (Most universally disliked SW film ever)
2020-25 - NOTHING
2026 - Mando and Grogu (FLOP)
2027 - Starfighter (TBD)
Rey NJO? Placed on indefinite hold and removed from Lucasfilm’s active release schedule. Probably never sees the light of day under Filoni and Brennan. I bet this survives only if folded into the broader post-sequel relaunch with “The Hunt for Ben Solo”, maybe combining these two into one? I think Sequel related films are all going on the backburner though based on recent reports of that era and trends from the parks.
Dawn of the Jedi? Reportedly a script, but current reporting frames it as “on hold”.
Lando? Script turned in but I don’t see any shot of this going to theaters
Droid Story and Rogue Squadron? Both 99% confirmed dead as theatrical releases
Waititi film? Script turned into Kennedy and never greenlight, again very likely this is dead under new direction
Post ST Kinberg trilogy? Really the only thing that hasn’t received “bad news” necessarily, and is totally an unknown.
Filoni “Heir to the Empire”? Rumors that it is going to be a D+ ~4-5 hour series instead of a theater release… But nothing confirmed on that.
Really I don’t see anything outside of Filoni’s project moving forward as is. I bet we don’t hear anything officially until Celebration 2027 and it will probably be Filoni’s project. I bet we get like 1 clean announcement of the next major project there. But that’s a month before Starfighter, so they are really going to be pushing that hard because they will need a win BAAAAD. They probably won’t want to distract from that “hype” much. I think our future is Ahsoka S2 and some animated projects, Filoni’s project in ~2029, and then a new trilogy 2030+.

After a near decade of failure at the box-office based on ROI and budget you think they’d reconsider their strategy.
Why is Lucasfilm failing and in freefall post Rogue One and the Last Jedi?
They clearly have no idea what they are doing and have no real leadership. Throw stuff at a wall see what sticks.
The Disney plusing of Star Wars on one hand allowed some creativity and room to experiment, and on the other hand allowed them to get lazy and sit on their laurels.
What do I know. I never thought A saga film would be a near box office bomb and struggle to cross that billion threshold In Rise of Skywalker, or that Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford could be a money loser.
Though making the Solo film after ruining and killing him in Force Awakens might have been a bad idea. Characters dead he died on a bridge like a putz. Because Harrison wanted him killed since Empire.
Ironic Mark Hamill was the one who wanted to continue playing his character in Luke Skywalker, and was super optimistic and he said they made him play Jake Skywalker. and killed him off. And they did all this to build up the character of Rey and now they get cold feet. After setting up her being passed the lightsaber and the Skywalker name and Luke Skywalker’s adopted heir by fate. and the one to restore the Jedi and now they are pathetically scared to make that film. They won’t make the Rey movie and justify killing off the trio and never reuniting them. You guys made some bold and I’d say foolhardy choices in your sequel, made your bed. No retcon can save that. Best thing is to embrace them.
That is what I would say to Disney Lucasfilm executives why did you kill Luke, Han and Leia, if this was the well we are scared shitless. That is the outcome.
That is the outcome.
The amount of hate I and many others got a decade ago on this forum, on other forums, Reddit, etc. after watching TFA for being the ones to raise the red warning flag early…
It was extremely clear where the franchise was headed from day one. Subsequent movies confirmed it. The box office trajectory of the franchise was apparent as early as TLJ, but arguably earlier in hindsight looking back at R1. The brand was being turned into a soulless corporate product. People ragged on George for many reasons, but at the end of the day he was one independent dude looking to tell his story. That was clearly never happening again.
A lot of us voiced our concerns that Star Wars would no longer be an event, that it would become over-saturated, and that while the general audience would turn up to the movies for a time, they did so largely in part because fans created fever-levels of excitement. Star Wars movies were kind of cultural landmarks. It was always a big deal.
Solo bombing was a giant air raid siren that got hand-waved away because of May “competition.” Like Star Wars ever had to worry about competition before that wasn’t Spider-Man or Lord of the Rings, which even then, was actual healthy competition. Star Wars as a brand was in trouble and fans continued to voice their concerns, but were loudly told this “wasn’t for them anymore.” Okay. So the fans left. TROS making Disney’s ‘trilogy’ the only of the three to have a straight downward trajectory with box office grosses, rather than getting the finale spike ROTJ and ROTS had, should have been the sign to put the franchise on ice and re-evaluate at a later date. By the end of the trilogy, the brand had lost over half its audience if we go off grosses alone. And that’s not even getting into the catastrophic merch and multimedia sales.
So instead of having some self-reflection, Dis/LF doubled down and dumped out a dozen or so modern day equivalents of direct-to-dvd movies onto their streaming service. Most of the remaining fans who stuck around finally had enough, and now the general audience saw the brand as junk you put on for “free.”
We’re now at a point where OG Star Wars fans are mostly apathetic and don’t bother tuning in at all. General audiences, lacking the personal attachment, just see it as background noise with no obligation to engage, and the new content failed to make a permanent connection with the youth like the OT and PT did. All you really have left are some OG stragglers and Disney fans. It should be clear by now that there was some irreparable devaluation going on in Star Wars land.
So M&G comes along and once again, we sit here and say it’ll flop. It should be pretty obvious by this point. But no. “It won’t flop! Baby Yoda! It’s Star Wars!”
Wow. Flopped. Front-loaded by Disney mega-fans, and then it falls off a cliff. Who woulda thunk.
Within like a day you already had the spin narratives about a movie not needing to make money to be successful, and how the next movie is the real test! Yeah okay. See you in twelve months for the next goal post shift, I suppose.
I still adore George’s saga and the original EU, but I haven’t touched a second of Dis/LF’s output since TROS. Once the literal biggest name in pop culture reduced to cheap, shoddy DTV content that can’t even break even.
Many of us said all this would happen beat-for-beat from day one, and we were told to shut up. Being proven right isn’t really a win in this case, and I take no pleasure seeing what state the franchise is in. Absolute travesty.
Not everything lasts forever. Like it says in a Star Wars book, even stars die. Star Wars is 50 years old next May.
Franchises like it or not do have a life cycle. Some go into the dustbin of history and become culturally irrelevant, like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.
I just never thought it would be Star Wars. It’s not quite there yet. But Disney has wrung the well dry, fairly quickly in a decade.
As older fans age out, they need to recreate and reenvision Star Wars. But at what point is it Star Wars in name only.
Star Wars is different things to different people. for some its George’s personal story and Saga, for others it’s the expanded material.
And like people have a different opinion of things, does it have to have lightsabers, Jedi, the Force to be Star Wars? Does it have to be about the Skywalker family and be a numbered episode with a roll up or crawl as it’s called.
I would be down for a franchise reboot with a writing team on the level of Gilroy’s crew. Spiritually continuing SW for a new era by clearing out years of cruft, reviving the EU elements that worked and mixing them with compelling original content which takes inspiration from historical events and non-SW culture. That last bit is crucial; it is a major reason why the OT still stands as tall as it does after a half century.
I was going to go watch this at the cinema but then saw some of the reviews, many saying it is like 4 episodes of a regular Mandalorian series, so I will wait a few months for the D+ premiere. I guess a lot of us are waiting for that to happen?
