Wouldn’t it have been easier and better to take the already edited cinema version, which I think looks really good, and create an extended edition from it by inserting the missing scenes, etc.?

The 4k-dremastered theatrical edition looks good. But there are still many issues, like DNR, lack of detail and softness. Only so much DrDre can do with suboptimal source material. The extended cut looks sharper and more detailed. The only issue: the color grading.

Since the color grading of the theatrical cut and extended cut are massively different (colors and contrast) it would be painful work to insert the extended scenes and match them with the theatrical cut so that you don’t see the change. Plus I bet you can still see the changes in detail and sharpness.

Imo, for the extended cut for Fellowship the dwalin and 44hr1n color corrected edition is best. Picture quality and grain on that is perfect.

The theatrical editions are at issue though. Both the 2009 or so bluray and DrDre’s upscale of those have great color, but they are overly DNR’d and too smooth. Then there are the 35mm ones, which are pretty great but a bit too scratchy at times.
Anyone have an idea if there’s another theatrical edition that’s better than all these?
Imo the perfect theatrical edition would be the Extended HD Bluray color corrected by dwalin and 44hr1n but recut back to theatrical.

Best thing would be if they just released the original prints of the movie like theyre doing with the original trilogy of star wars to their 50th anniversary in 2027, no fanproject comes even close quality wise

Well yeah of course, but that ain’t happening. They’re just dumping the bad 4Ks into theaters for the 25th anniversary. Maybe in another 25 years. Would also be nice if they give us the hours and hours of finished extra documantaries from Costa Botes that eere never released

When PJ is dead or they are desperate for money they might do it just like disney is doing with star wars now

My problem with the dwalin and 44hr1n color corrected edits is that they are low bitrate, they mustve either lowered the bitrate through the regrading process or used a low quality source and it is especially noticeably on a 4k screen which is a shame.

You can’t perfectly recut the extended edition of Fellowship back to the theatrical, there is at least one part of a scene that does not have an equivalent in the extended (Haldir talks a bit more with the Fellowship when first encountering them), so you would have to use the theatrical edition footage for that. Also I think there is a couple more shots that linger a bit longer in the theatrical than in the extended. But a version definitely could be made that used mostly extended footage.

Yup, this is true for dwalin’s work (haven’t seen 44hr1n’s). The colors do look good of course, but unfortunately, the quality seems downgraded. The grain looks odd, rough. It’s probably the bitrate. I compared to this 4K Dremastered and wow the Dremastered looks amazing. The quality is the best, even better than the 4Ks. I don’t know what Dre did, but it looks as high quality as you can get. And I really like the colors he uses. If only he could finish this project, we’ll have the best available extended version of FOTR. PLEASE DR DRE, let’s finish this amazing project!

Oh and yes, some re-work of the colors on this Dremastered EE should be done. Some areas look a bit odd, but overall it looks really nice. I really think Dr Dre can make the best version if he gets time to work on it.

Anyone have any idea when part 2 is going to be released??

Never or when everyone stops caring.

That’s essentially the same thing.

I’m not watching the trilogy again until this is completed. Fingers crossed! Would like any bit of an update, anything, as this looks great.

I’d love to have a link for this - both theatrical and extended, if possible, in addition to the whole trilogy if it is finished.

Reading through a project thread on here to see if others are kindly offering to help out with links… is always a good idea! 👍

Also…

This project also hasn’t yet been completed. To date… ‘Part 1’ of the Fellowship Of The Ring: Extended Edition is the only part of Dre’s ‘Extended Editions’ for the LOTR Trilogy released so far.

Good luck with it. 👍

Well, ever since I discovered Harmy’s edition of the OT I’ve been pointed to the fact that the EE of the Fellowship of the Ring has a massive green-tint shift in the original Blu-Ray release I own… And now I can’t unsee it.

Is DrDre currently still working on the extended editions as far as anybody knows, or is the project on halt? For today I’ll be watching a version by Dwalin and 44rh1n of the extended edition, I guess this is my start down the rabbit hole of finding the perfect LOTR regrades as well.

I grew up being an avid fantasy book reader and these are my favorite movies. I have EE editions of all of the Tolkein films but after recently getting a new OLED TV, I went down the rabbit hole of looking for media that would look great on the new TV and ended up discovering icebox606’s (on reddit) remaster of ROTK which was infinitely better. This was all within the past week which has subsequently brought me here. It’s great to find out that other talented individuals have put in the effort to bring these films to the quality they deserve.

Hopefully this project isn’t dead, I had a great time with the theatrical editions, but surely the extended editions are needed 😢 DrDre has made a tremendous work already

Yeah… Someone else has made EE remasters, but DrDre’s depth of color is superior. I really wish he could return to this project.
