Editing other sci-fi movies into Star Wars stories

I swore up and down I saw this idea/discussion topic mentioned here, but I couldn’t find it and didn’t find it on FE or Reddit, so maybe I dreamed it up on my own…

So, just for fun to kick around or discuss, what sci-fi movies or Star Wars ripoffs could be tinkered with and repurposed to be their own Star Wars stories that take place outside of the grander stories?

I recently was watching a little bit of Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone and thought that this could be a cool, smaller story that took place in the Star Wars universe. The main character was definitely a poor man’s Han Solo, but maybe with some sly editing, you could make this a Dash Rendar movie that takes place before ESB, or forget connecting it to the main story, try to just make it seem like they are on Jakku and replace sounds with Star Wars sounds.

Battle Beyond the Stars could be a Star Wars Seven Samurai (even though that story was covered in both The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian).

I know these are crappy B movies, but was wondering if anyone else had thoughts or ideas just for discussion and kicking around or fun edits.

Blade Runner should really be the obvious one. Besides being a crappy adaptation, it stars Harrison Ford in a futuristic cityscape with flying cars. Sounds like Han Solo took a trip to Coruscant to me. Now somebody composite Chewbacca eating noodles with him.

I’ve actually been thinking about doing this with the new Dune films. I can imagine people asking what the point would be in doing it. I honestly just think it would be a lot of fun.

The second time I watched the new Dune film, I imagined that the events were taking place deep in the outer rim during the dark years after ROTS. When the Emperor was mentioned I imagined it to be Palpatine. The Lady Jessica’s last name would be Dameron, and Paul Atreides would someday go on to have a son named Poe who not only resembled his grandfather but would also long to be a pilot.

Other connections:
Duncan Idaho (who would need a new name) is an exiled Jedi in hiding who senses Paul’s Force abilities
The Bene Gesserit is an order similar to or perhaps connected to the Night Sisters
The Spice Trade from Arrakis would rival that of Kessel

Star Wars music would be used wherever possible, and the opening crawl would name Paul as Paul Dameron Atreides.

Guardians of the Galaxy could fit nice into SW universe 😉

Yeah I agree. Guardians might be a little too “quippy” for Star Wars as it is.

This thread just brought up a memory of a fan trailer I saw YEARS ago (around the time the Disney Lucasfilm news first broke out) that was a theoretical Episode VII that took place thousands of years after ROTJ. I remember it used clips from films such as Lost in Space, The Time Machine and Reign of Fire (specifically the part where they’re “re-enacting” the events of Empire Strikes Back to a group of children).

Sadly, I don’t think I would be able to find it anymore (I don’t even remember what it’s title was). 😦

I think it’d be neat to find films like Blade Runner that feature a common actor so that we already have our foot in the door. Still, the totally unrelated films are cool too. You just gotta make it convincing it’s the same universe. I bet scattering recognized aliens like Twi’leks and Bith in the background would help.

Maybe we can look into some Gonzo blockbusters like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. I wanna say James Cameron’s Avatar could maybe work too, but I’m not sure it would. It would at least require a massive overhaul.

I feel like the issue is the best scenes are the ones that utilize concepts that would feel thoroughly out of place in Star Wars, like the multi-dimensional market or that portal or whatever it was I forget, and that’s despite the film omitting time travel, because the protags in the comics are indeed time agents.

I did a Prometheus edit that used a lot of film in the opening from Terrance Malnick’s ‘‘Tree of Life.’’
My new opening is about 1/2 hour long and between things from ToL and bonus features on the BR only about 2 minutes of it are from the version of the movie that you saw as “Prometheus.”
This idea can work but you have to be careful in the execution.
