Hi. I don’t read all the messages of this thread, and the last time I saw TROS was in the cinema, so I have a question (if you guys doesn’t bothered to answer): In the scene of Luke and Leia training, what’s the difference between the new dialogue from this edit and the original dialogue from the movie? Just curious to know what improvement you are making on the scene, and how it helps to improve the film as a whole

We also replaced “you’ll take both sabers to Exegol” with “We’ll always be with you”. At least that’s how I remember it.

We’re THIS close to the final product for this scene. I can feel it.

I agree though that the sound still doesn’t sound all that diegetic.

Maybe the lightsaber activation sound could blend better if it came right after she says “I’m a Jedi”? (it’s been a while since I last catched up with the discussion on this thread so forgive me if this has been talked about earlier haha).

The line itself feels great both in terms of sound and story payoff. The way it should have been in the movie.

That idea was mentioned. Faraday moved the sound up so that the ignition/hum might disguise any unfixable issues with the line delivery (which seems to have worked, as most criticisms are now about the saber sound and not the line).

Hmmm…honestly, I think I prefer it without the sound. Just like how the music drops out at that point, I think the line has more weight when there’s nothing to distract from it. Obviously, that comes with the huge caveat that the original edit can be made flawless; barring that, I think the lightsaber sound is a clever band-aid over it.

That said, I agree with oviniboy that it doesn’t quite sound organic to the scene yet. I think it needs more bass maybe? Just something to give it more “oomph.”

Which actually leads into an important question - how will the lightsaber sounds change as a result of the new “cracked crystal core” concept? Will it be modified to sound closer to Kylo’s saber, with that buzzing/motor quality to it? Maybe a blend of Kylo’s saber sounds coupled with the original Luke saber sounds? However that goes in V2, this new effect would have to match.

If my memory serves me right, the new dialogue should be as follows:

Luke: “There’s something my sister would want you to have…”

Rey: “Leia’s saber.”

Luke: “It was the last night of her training, Leia told me that she had sensed the end of her Jedi Path. She surrendered her saber to me and said that one day, it would be picked up again, by someone who would finish her journey. We’ll always be with you, but this is your fight.”

Rey: “I can’t get there. I don’t have the wayfinder. I destroyed Ren’s ship.”

Luke Skywalker : “You have everything you need.”

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

I agree, the sound effect really seems to contest for attention over the climactic line, and at that point in the scene it feels odd to hear the sabre ignite and not see it. Like, if it was intended to be there originally, it would’ve been a medium shot that shows Rey igniting the sabre. Instead it’s a closeup of Rey’s face because we’re only supposed to focus on what she’s saying.

Personally I really liked the mockup some pages back that places the ignition sound as Rey swings the saber, that seemed to fit a lot more naturally to the scene, and it actually gives more punch to that moment instead of clashing with it.

I’m sure this question has been answered, but what program do you use to merge the separated lossless aiff files?

Does the saber ignite twice in this audio?

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I believe the “bzzt” as Rey lifts up her arm is the crackling of the lightning coming back through the silence of the scene. It doesn’t sound like the Skywalker saber ignition usually does (if anything, it almost sounds like a saber turning off), and you can still hear similar sounds again after the full audio comes back.

That’s basically it - it disguises the slight hum on the phoneme mix that can’t be removed.

I’m happy to make my files available to anyone who wants to play around with it - it’s not that I’m unwilling to work on it myself, but just finding ten minutes to sit and produce that version was a rare crepuscular ray shining down through my current schedule of Real Life Commitments (which is also why the mix clearly wasn’t the greatest).

hmmmm everytime i have watched this seen I always took that to be the skywalker saber igniting as Rey pulls it up. Adding the second (only) ignition into the scene just makes it sound like there are two now.

That’s definitely the best version yet. The am a jedi part sounds so much better. I do agree that the saber noise sounds a little funky, but it is so very close. I’m so glad it’s working out because I love this change!

That sounds really good imo.

Not to bring up shit that’s already been finalized, but did we decide not to phrase Palpatine’s lines as, “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me! I am all the Sith! You are nothing!” because we wouldn’t see Palpatine’s face on the “nothing” line? I feel like Rey’s “I am a Jedi” being a direct response to “You are nothing!” would be the clearest way to phrase it, but I can see how that was decided against based on the shots available.

Yeah, that was why the dialogue order in the clip I posted was decided on. Though frankly, I like it being a response to “scavenger girl” better anyway; it shows Rey’s journey since the start of TFA, and is a direct challenge about how she can’t defeat him because she’s just a scavenger, to which she essentially replies “Guess again, bitch.”

I think the dialogue works either way, and as Faraday says, it’s nice to hearken back to her origins, before she takes ownership of her new identity.

That said, I’d like to +1 for KEEPING the nice strong lightsaber ignition sound. It’s OK if it has to move to where we believe the ‘current’ one is (if we think there are now two), but that beefy PWOMP really helps sell the drama in the moment, I think.

“Beefy PWOMP” must be in the subtitle tracks. Non-negotiable.

I’m all for the new ignition sound, but there is indeed two ignitions sounds in the current build

I believe you guys that there’s a second ignition in there, but even listening closely for it, for the life of me I can’t hear it. I always figured the lack of an ignition sound was just for non-diegetic dramatic effect.

It honestly sounds like pitch is a lot higher than usual no idea

Yeah I don’t hear the second ignition either. I think the added ignition is good especially if it masks something wrong with the voice clip (although it sounds perfect to me so maybe it works by itself) but I think the new ignition needs some more punch or bass or something because it’s the ultimate climactic point of the entire movie.

Author
Time

I feel like the ignition should be after Rey speaks - her line is supposed to be the main tension release and it seems odd to pre-empt it.

Author
Time

The issue is, the current placement is specifically to mask an unavoidable audio issue with the line of dialogue. I don’t disagree with your point, it’ll just be a case of group consensus whether it’s worth the altered line of dialogue. To me, it’s a very small trade-off for a larger payoff - but I’m not the final arbiter. (Also, I agree with comments that the SFX could be massaged into the mix better than I’ve currently got it.)

Its very much worth it to keep the new line IMO.
