The Original Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 24

Tbf, I can think of at least one particular shot of SC38 Reimagined that I like enough to include in my personal cut of the film. It’s no surprise that it’s one of if not the only shot where the camera isn’t moving and there’s no lense flares (okay well it does have some - hopefully they can be removed). Shots like that can be helpful, but alas they are few and far between.

Of course SC 38 was used. The fight is actually good and actually fits the characters personalities and skill sets instead of looking like two old men fighting with sticks (Vader is 42 not an old man and is supposed to be an expert duelist who “Helped the empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights”). To me that’s enough to forgive it being different.

Besides, of course the fight scene is going to be filmed differently then the talking scenes.

I still think SC. 38 looks like a trashy fanfilm and will never rival the original duel. It’s an overcorrection for the '77 duel.

Adywan had the right idea in just recutting the duel to make it seem faster-paced and better-constucted.

But there are certain qualities that are consistent between fight and talking scenes. Lighting, quality of the costumes, filming lenses and other equipment, color grading, etc. No matter how hard you try, SC. 38 blends even worse with the original film than the redone ship effects from 1997.

SC 38 is hot garbage. No disrespect to the people who made it, I’m sure it was quite the feat. But that fan-film doesn’t fit in at all alongside the original Star Wars. Inserting a Teletubbies episode into the Death Star sequence would mesh better.

I really like SC38 for the most part save for a bit overdone bits. I think it’s the cinematography that doesn’t make it blend well at all with the rest of the movie, with all of those elaborate takes and angles that.

My favorite approach to fan-editing that scene remains the Adywan one. Tightening the editing to make it look less sluggish or clunky but keeping in line with the existing cinematography, lighting, color grading, choreography style and SFX.

With regards to the redone space battle, does someone else think that the new ship models always look kinda off with those “clean” textures? And why are they rendering a sequel-era T-70 X-wing rather than the classic T-65B?

I really like SC38 as a standalone short fan-film. I’d rather have interesting and unorthodox fan-films like that, or story-driven little films like Birth of a Monster, than Look At My Jedi OC And My Cool Lightsaber In This Bad Fight Scene version 4,398,289 on YouTube.

No, I still think reshooting it in full like SC38 is the way to go, they just did a bad job of it.

Completely agree. Sc 38 is alright, it just does not fit at all in the movie. I feel like the hate is overcorrecting for the overdone praise it gets.

Indeed. I really don’t like the idea that Kenobi vs Vader needs to be reshot. I’d rather work with what’s available to make integration more seamless.

Yeah, some of us are a bit too hard on SC. 38, myself included. It’s too jarring within the movie and arguably the series. Place it in a fan film, replace Obi-Wan with a random Jedi, and it’s much better.

I don’t think the creators of SC38 ever intended it to be edited into ANH; it’s meant to be its own standalone piece of media.

I’m very much a Theatrical Edition purist when it comes to ANH, but if I was going reshoot the Ben vs Darth duel, I’d do a short, terse, Kurosawa style kendo/samurai fight - like Rebels eventually did with Kenobi vs Maul.

Despite the flak that original scene gets, in my opinion it just requires some more precision and snap to the choreography. I imagine these two combatants know each other’s moves backward and forward, so there would be a minimum of flair as they re-acquainted themselves with these strategies. Vader would attack, Obi-wan would deftly deflect and retreat, rinse and repeat.

I agree. I would be interested to see different approaches to tightening the scene a little through editing, rather than reshooting it. I personally would cut the shot of Obi-Wan spinning. It sticks out in a duel that is generally pretty grounded.

The one that always gets me is that bit where he runs around Vader. It’s cringey as hell.

I mentioned this in the Resurgence thread for the Shaw ghost, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to do a 3D model of Hayden’s head (with photorealistic textures) to better incorporate the Hayden ghost into ROTJ? Either that or convincingly deepfake Hayden’s head onto a similarly-sized costumed body double (with ROTS-like wig) duplicating Shaw’s expressions.

I may just be spitballing here, but a well-produced Hayden ghost would be my preferred version of Anakin. I’d say we’re at the point where it would be doable.

I agree that one of the best ROTJ changes would be making a Hayden ghost that isnt super creepy and is maybe a little aged up. Idk how to do it but I know it can be done because the Ascendant Hayden ghost looks great. I would love a ROTJ ghost to pair with it.

Ideally you’d do both, but we’re not exactly Corridor Digital.

Really, like hinventon said, the Ascendant Anakin ghost looks great, and it didn’t need any of that fancy stuff.

Definitely! It’s just a matter of appropriate clip selection and manipulation/editing to get it just right. A non-creepy Hayden ghost would be the perfect goal for any ROTJ edit (one that’s the full length of the OOT shot, so somebody could insert it into the current/next Despecialized or other fan edits).

Essentially someone who can do a deep fake use some photos of Hayden right now with a little added aging and he would fit the look as in “How he would look uncooked by lava as a ghost.”

I mean, I personally don’t mind unmasked vader looking and sounding different then older hayden since if you look at burn victims after they “heal” or get transplants, they look totally different. Bacta aint going to get you back 100% after a lava bath.

I don’t get why you’d want “How he would look uncooked by lava as a ghost.”
