The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 535

That’s right, there’s no telling what timeframe it’ll be on in the end. I’d say if he can generate any clips we’ll be happy to parse them but it’s all right if he can’t.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I think the line, “You’re just a clone,” would be welcome, but I understand that it’s not a necessary requirement.

I agree Law. That would be the most seamless line since his mouth is covered at the time and there’s a huge silence before “What could you give me?”

Especially if the AI is being improved I have a feeling it will end up sounding fantastic.

Definitely agree, I think the clone line would be benefit the film a ton.

I fear the line would have some odd unwanted symmetry with his line to Han - “You’re just a memory”. Also Palps not refuting that he’s “just a clone” would make it even more confusing whether he’s the same Palps or a copy. He’s only supposed to have a cloned body, which the vat of decayed Palpatines already works to show.

Gonna have to disagree with you Burbin. I don’t really see that symmetry being an issue since both lines are said by Kylo and are only a portion of the truth (remember how Han clarifies it’s his memory?)

And since Palpatine says, “Kill me, and my spirit will pass into you, as all the Sith live in me” it’s quite clear that he’s the real deal, despite Kylo’s insult. Sure, maybe he should respond to his comment, but I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary.

I just don’t think we should run the risk of people thinking back to the Palpatine scene during the Han scene since there’s no intended connection to be drawn, I see it as an issue because both lines are said by Kylo, it might seem like a callback where there shouldn’t be one.

And I agree Palps is shown to be the same character, but it could still cause some confusion (that is best avoided) if he is directly refered to as a “clone” - people might assume he has false memories or is just pretending to remember his “past life” as part of his manipulation. We already hear from Merry that “cloning” might have been part of the process, which now connects to the tank of discarded Palp bodies. But he is not a clone, so I think the only way the line would work is if Palpatine was able to counter it (such as it was in the cut dialogue - “more than a clone, less than a man”).

I mean, it’s not necessarily too big a deal for me if it’s not included in v2. What matters is if it’s actually produced by the AI. I have some other character lines that I’m going to put into v2 as soon as I get it so this would just be another one to add to the list.

Still, it’s my opinion that this would benefit the project. But I suppose Hal is ultimately the deciding vote in that regard.

I kind of agree with Burbin about not needing the “You’re just a clone” line, but not necessarily for the same reasons. For me, it goes back to the old axiom “show, don’t tell.” We already see the Palpatine clones in the vat, so I don’t think it’s wholly necessary to spell it out for the audience on top of that. But this film already has a problem with clunky, unnecessary exposition, so whatever.

If the AI works, it would be fine to include it. Sure, cool. But I don’t think it’s necessary at all. (Mainly thanks to poppa’s incredible VFX work.)

I would also worry about unintended resonance between those two lines.

“You’re just a clone.”

“Your clone. What Palpatine stood for, what he fought for… that’s not gone.”

I think Burbin’s concern about clarity with the “clone body, real spirit” thing is fair. Accidentally giving the impression that this Palpatine is just a clone with no presence of the original could cheapen the whole thing for a new viewer (and the theatrical is pretty cheap already).

But Jar Jar makes a good point too with the “my spirit will pass” line placement. I guess it could go either way.

Maybe some wording less literal than “clone” could get the idea across more safely, but no specific term is coming to my mind for the situation Palps is in. I thought maybe “husk” or “corpse” or “phantom” or something, but that could be even more easily misinterpreted.

I think technically Palpatine is a “lich” at this point, but that would be a ridiculous word to toss into a fan edit of Star Wars.

I don’t think we need to state outright that Palpatine is in a clone body, personally. In the huge mess of tangle and confusion that is TROS, the one bit of tangle and confusion that works in its favour is how and what exactly Palpatine is, at least in my opinion - the small amount of ambiguity (I think it’s the exact right amount now we’ve got the Palpatine clones in the Pickled Snoke tank) gives him that same atemporal sense of “how does this work” that makes the concept of ghosts unsettling.

Personally, at this point, the whole mess about how Palps returned is part of the fun to me.
Is he a clone? Is he a ghost? Is that his original body? How he’s still alive? Is he just a walking corpse? Is he now a space lich or something? Is he a metaphor for how the movie industry just insists in the same ideas over and over for decades until they rot away and become only a shadow of their former selves? Who knows?? Who cares???
I know it’s still messy, and perhaps I just got used to it, but well, it’s a movie about space samurai wizards, so I think as far as this edit can go, Palpatine’s returnal it’s enough for me, more would break the fun, it doesn’t answer clearly but it doesn’t leave us in the dark like the theatrical cut (thanks Poppa)

Energy leaves Palp’s body in RotJ. Clones have existed (with Palp’s knowledge) since AotC. Clone tanks are show in RoS. Palps wants to posses Rey in RoS.

He’s the original spirit in a imperfect clone body. That’s the only read I got from watching the film.

Is it decided that the Sith scream used in the trailer for Revenge of the Sith will be used when Palpatine explodes at the end? Sherlock Potter did the mock-up a while back.

Indeed. It’s the easiest way to get around it (and even the answer suggested by canon)

Just to avoid taking undeserved credit: I did not work on the Sith scream idea.

That was a safe bet though, considering how many mockups I do submit!

Also, he explicitly says “I have DIED before.”

Regarding “I’ll find you.” I get where you’re coming from, and I understand your intentions, but I kinda feel leaving it at just that is kind of awkward. (It’s a personal, subjective kinda thing, but… yeah.)

So I have a suggestion, replace the entire line with something along the lines of: “Rey, help me. Please.” I get the point of the original line, it’s to play into Rey’s fears of turning to the dark side, so I preserved that while also avoiding having Kylo Ren explicitly reveal his intentions of corrupting Rey. Here, Kylo is trying not to reveal his intentions, while also asking for her help against Palpatine, but Rey sees through it anyways.
