What about getting an impersonator for Ben’s last couple lines? Similar to poppasketti dubbing in the new line for him, “You were right.”

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Author
Time

Eh, not a big fan of impersonators at all. Even though poppa did a good job, even that line stands out to me.

RL, I think that line would best be placed when Ben makes his presence known to her right before she’s about to strike down Palpatine. That would be her darkest moment, where she feels the most alone.

There also needs to be a line replacement for Poe when Rey senses the dagger. Either that, or some clever editing to cut around it.

EDIT: The easiest solution there would be “Where?” instead of “Why?”. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for remembering this, Jar Jar! I’ve been sampling some clips, so I’ll try to get something out soon.

I may have missed some other edits too, full disclosure. The scope of this project blows me away sometimes.

I feel more split on the 3PO redub. I think the whispers are already telegraphed very well with the latest changes: Rey hears whispers when she picks up the dagger on Passana, then again while rescuing Chewie which prompts her to say “I have a feeling we need the dagger”, then she hears (presumably louder) whispers when she picks it up before being interrupted by Kylo, finally on Endor she puts two and two together over the meaning of “only this blade tells (the location of the Wayfinder)”.

Furthermore I feel that it’s better if the whispers are something only Rey knows about (and keeps to herself). That really drives on the idea of her feelings of isolation, in the same way she doesn’t tell Leia about her visions, she doesn’t tell her friends about the whispers. It would even make more sense now for her to storm off behind their backs on Endor, since she doesn’t want them to know what she’s doing (or how she’s doing it), instead of just because they’re running out of time.

Also I’m not a fan of all the small bits that would have to be cut. I feel there needs to be at least some reaction to the dagger’s translation they’ve worked so hard for (such as “the Endor system. Where the last war ended?”), an ambiguous translation would prompt an even bigger reaction, disconcerted looks from Poe and Finn, saying something like “what is that supposed to mean?” or “is that helpful? Rey, does that ring a bell?”. I know they are quickly interrupted by the arrival of Kylo’s ship and the reveal Chewie’s alive, but still it would be odd for them to never ponder over the misterious translation even afterwards. And I also don’t like trimming Jannah’s introduction even more and losing the Babu Frik joke from 3PO.

Yeah, at least for this version, I think it would be better not to do it.

You know, I initially thought there was no point in changing the dagger stuff since 3PO told them where to stand. But your explanation helps me digest it more. 😃

I can only speak for myself, but for me, having the Wayfinder coordinates being etched onto this dagger is still too much of a contrivance to be overlooked. Star Wars has never exactly been a paradigm of plotting and structure; but I can’t think of any moment that “jumps the shark” more than that. For crying out loud, the DSII was only built 30 years ago. And who would have carved the dagger with that information? Ochi?

I mean, yeah, the whispers are fantastic. But the dagger translations wouldn’t affect them at all, so I don’t understand the worry, here. And in fact - “It would even make more sense now for her to storm off behind their backs on Endor, since she doesn’t want them to know what she’s doing” - if Finn and Poe already know that the Wayfinder is on DSII, then doesn’t that counteract your point? If Rey just randomly tells them, “I think we have to go to Endor” (i.e. the new translation plan), and they’re just in the background wondering what the heck they’re doing out here, then that would be in line with what you’re proposing.

Also I’m not a fan of all the small bits that would have to be cut. I feel there needs to be at least some reaction to the dagger’s translation they’ve worked so hard for (such as “the Endor system. I’m sure we could figure out some way of redubbing that line. That’s not a huge issue. And if not…it’s not the first time this film failed to get adequate coverage. J.J.'s whole MO is cutting emotional scenes short with a sudden enemy arrival, so it would blend right in!

And I also don’t like trimming Jannah’s introduction even more and losing the Babu Frik joke from 3PO.

I thought we were cutting that line anyway, because they threw away their own story logic for the sake of a quick joke? (Namely that “Babu only works for the crew,” and also that the line implies he was broadcasting Rey’s location to the entire galaxy.)

Also, I know we have a few dads out here on the thread. Happy Father’s Day, you guys!

I was recently watching the documentary on TROS and apparently they went through a bunch of different items which would give the coordinates to the trio before they landed on the dagger. Apparently their original idea was that the dagger itself was forged at the time the Death Star fell (presumably at the command of Palpatine), and it was created to guide Sith followers to Exegol. So it just ended up in Ochi’s possession I supppose. Again, doesn’t really make much sense, though. Were they meant to bring the wayfinder back to the Death Star after they were through with it? And if so, how do they get back to Exegol again? Lmao.

I suppose Ochi could have been the “ferryman”, if you will, guiding fellow cultists to Exegol, but that just brings us back full circle: why would he need the location’s precise coordinates? In case he dies or gives it to someone I guess?

Anyways, enough of that crap. One thing I want to correct Sherlock is that Babu wasn’t beaming their location to the entire galaxy. It was only to just that moon. Kylo tracked them down a different way.

Okay, in fairness, that’s not an explanation I was expecting, lol! (Goes to show me, I suppose.) It makes marginally more sense, but like you said, it’s still pretty dumb.

And thank you for clarifying about the broadcast. I should have said that the transmission could have been intercepted by anyone in the galaxy (especially when it comes from a First Order-occupied planet - you’d think they’d be monitoring those things), not that it was necessarily intended for everyone to hear. I appreciate you keeping me on my toes!

God…I’m sorry, guys. There are just some times when this movie makes me feel like:

I’ll add the Babu Frik joke on Endor to the OP as something being considered aside from being part of the 3PO redub idea.

I’m still open to the 3PO dub idea, but like with many things I’m skeptical until seeing it work well. And if it gets done, it’ll be available for anyone to use, regardless of it this project does.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Looks like I’m gonna have to replace my big hard drive with all my SW stuff on it. I’ve got it all backed up, so that’s all fine, but GD. Won’t be able to do much with anything until then.

Oof that sucks, good thing it’s backed up. It’s all too common to see long-running projects destroyed due to this lack of vision.

If Rey just randomly tells them, “I think we have to go to Endor” (i.e. the new translation plan), and they’re just in the background wondering what the heck they’re doing out here, then that would be in line with what you’re proposing.

What I mean is that they don’t know the precise location of the Wayfinder, Poe says “it’ll take years to find what we’re looking for”, Rey whispers to herself “only this blade tells”, like she’s thinking “oh no, I’ll have to follow the evil whispers…” before Jannah and co. walk in. It then makes more sense for Rey to storm off afterwards because she wouldn’t want to explain how she can find the exact location of the Wayfinder, she doesn’t want anyone to know about the dark whispers in her head. This wouldn’t work if the translation spells it out to everyone, they all would know about the whispers, tapping into the dark side, etc.

So it’s not as strong, and again, I think it would just feel like there are missing lines/scenes of Finn and Poe properly reacting to all of this information, whereas we can get away with far more if it’s something only Rey knows and is actively keeping to herself. Which again also better builds up on her struggles of isolation in the film.

I’m sure we could figure out some way of redubbing that line. That’s not a huge issue. And if not…it’s not the first time this film failed to get adequate coverage. J.J.'s whole MO is cutting emotional scenes short with a sudden enemy arrival, so it would blend right in!

That’s what I’m getting at, the dagger being inscribed with direct coordinates to Endor is not great, that’s why redubbing it sounds good on paper, but looking at the whole picture I think it can’t be changed without creating more issues, and trying to patch those in would just result in a worse overall outcome than just letting that small contrivance stand.

I thought we were cutting that line anyway, because they threw away their own story logic for the sake of a quick joke? (Namely that “Babu only works for the crew,” and also that the line implies he was broadcasting Rey’s location to the entire galaxy.)

I don’t see the issue with the Babu line, it’s clear Zorii and Babu are supposed to be good people and it’s not hard to rationalize it was an encrypted transmission on a rebel frequency Jannah and co. would be looking out for. This feels more like a nitpick you’d find on a “top 10 plot holes in TRoS” article rather than a legit issue that needs to be addressed.

Personally, the Babu “joke” has always been a “meh” so I wouldn’t really miss it. And as Hal pointed out … with the removal of him at the battle of the end … there’s no real payoff or anything else with that character.

Sidenote,

I mean, I understand if not much can really be done with the whole DSII, Jannah, etc. scene to be done in a seamless way (Although I will root/support it and even if Sherlock or someone can come up with a “final draft” of the idea that isn’t for this edit, I’d put it in regardless for my own.) It’s still strange, Babu, part of a crew that only helps/works for one another would send out some broadcast be like “Oh hey, there are some people working against the First Order, so if you are First Order, please don’t listen to this. Anyway, they are going to this exact spot, made up of a small crew, so anyone who happens to be in the area, please treat them nicely. This is a one time “nice” thing we are doing, since well, you know, we only do things for those part of the crew. But we are in a good mood. Anyway, again, if you are First Order or anyone on their side, please disregard.”

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

I dunno… the joke lands for me, not just the 3PO line, but the idea that the babbling little guy would go out of his way to secretly aid the resistance movement, I think it is meant to be outlandish and comical in the right kind of cheesy way. He doesn’t need to appear again at the end, it has enough of a payoff in and of itself: first we don’t expect this “black market droidsmith” to be a tiny frog fella, then we don’t expect the tiny droidsmith to help out in such a fashion after meeting him. It fits with the idea that good people are willing to stand (and would be even more fitting if the ‘rebellious Kijimi’ ideas are implemented).

I feel nitpicking that one line is just taking things way too serious, the kind of person that would have a legit gripe over this would probably have a problem with just about everything else in this movie. And again it’s a matter of weighing the options and I think it does more harm than good to alter/remove things and cut Jannah’s introduction even shorter for the sake of changing this.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Agreed Burbin. If we are having the rest of Kijimi rise up against the FO, why would we deny Babu that same opportunity? Isn’t the whole point of this movie about the common people standing up for what’s right, even if it wasn’t predicted that they would?

The weird thing is that Babu just decides to send a transmission to Endor on a whim and prays that there are no Empire sympathizers at the most significant Imperial archeological site ever. Jannah hadn’t even heard of him before she got the message. And yeah, that’s 100% a nitpick, and normally I wouldn’t worry too much about nitpicks; but the R&D was already done, so why not address it?

I guess…here’s my thinking overall: The official film is already held together by duct tape and wishful thinking, so at this point, I just want the main plot elements (like the dagger) to make some amount of sense. Like I’ve said all along, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work; but I wouldn’t want to just throw out RL’s idea without giving it a fair chance. We’re waiting on other shots in the meantime anyway.

I thought the “Babu oldest friend” joke is a bit weak, like something out of a mediocre sitcom (imagine it with a laugh track). Also it’s slightly in bad taste, as it rubs in that C3PO doesn’t remember R2 and his other friends - I find it hard to laugh at.

And I specifically remember being baffled in cinema, why would he be mentioned and trusted by Jannah there. It’s obviously only for the benefit of the joke and nothing else.

I much prefer Sherlockpotter’s version of the scene.

Sorry if its been discussed already but the destruction of Kajimi has been removed

But now with talks of adding more of an uprising on the planet, would readding the destruction help?

It would slow the movie down ever so slightly, in a good way & shows us that they are willing to destroy whole planets on the whim of a little uprising.

I like the way they did the destruction practically. And I’m wondering how would it be a positive change to readd it

In theory, in a standalone kind of way, I can totally get where you’re coming from.

In a meta-sense, however, we’ve already had two Death Stars in the original trilogy, a Death Star planet that’s 5x stronger in TFA, and a broken Death Star as a location in TROS, so to then have every Star Destroyer also be a Death Star just absolutely kills any good will the movie has going for it. Audiences were rolling their eyes when Death Star II appeared in 1983, a bunch more were even more exasperated when they brought the idea back in 2015, and by the time I was watching TROS I was just laughing out loud while my friend yelled at the screen in confused frustration, both of us marveling at how stupid and creatively bankrupt the whole series (or at least Abrams) is. Destroying a planet is supposed to leave a huge impact, but it had already lost all impact in TFA (though Hal’s edit made it better) and it certainly didn’t have any left in TROS.

The less planet-destroying lasers, the better.
