Nowadays if you released ANH a lot of crusty nerds would complain up and down about his piloting ability coming out of nowhere. But the truth is sometimes those details don’t need to be explained in exhausting detail. People can roll with a lot if a film is easy and breezy.

ANH has a lot of “show, don’t tell” problems in regards to Luke’s piloting ability up until the trench run. I’m surprised nobody’s rendered a short sequence of the T16 Skyhopper zooming around Beggar’s Canyon to insert immediately before the theatrical introduction to Luke.

You’re not the first one to suggest this. The mockup here is to brief, but it could give you guys some ideas.

Technically not the same film, but pretty close.

There are existing clips from old episodes of Blue Peter or whatever where the kids DID question Luke’s piloting ability and brought it up in the context of a semi common topic of criticism at the time. I’ve brought up the idea of Luke going through beggar’s canyon in an old thread before, I think it’s something that shows up in one of the games as well. I agree with everyone else though it’s better to have the result at the end, if Star Wars were a mini series or even just a longer movie maybe it would make sense, but as is it would mess with the pace and tension release too much, plus you don’t want to tip the hint too hard and make it overly traditional, makes the movie too predictable and feels like going through the motions, especially when you pair the beginning action with the end.

You mean provide a welcome break from the snail’s pace of the Tatooine section?

I agree putting in some kind of Luke-flying-in-Beggars-Canyon sequence could break up the slog of the Tatooine droid section. Maybe go from the Tantive IV section to Luke flying, then have that end with him flying home & have the T16 really small in the sky as you pan down to the escape pod with the droids walking away? Or move it later and have it pan down to the stormtroopers inspecting the crash site?

On the other hand, I feel that slog as is helps maintain the dynamic of the droids as the central POV characters, which makes the switch to farmboy hero’s journey a little nicer. YMMV.

Maybe for everyone who is used to Star Wars that’s how Tatooine feels, as a kid I loved the mystery of the barren planet with the droids before meeting Luke. And yes if there was an exciting chase through a tight winding cavern in the beginning of the movie it would cause diminishing returns by the end of the movie, the sequence the entire story is building up to.

This is a fun idea, reminds me of the cut scene of Luke looking up at the action from the beginning.

100% agree. The theatrical version of ANH has damn-near perfect editing, and I think messing with the pacing like that would be for the worse. But it might be a pretty interesting addition to something like an extended version. A bunch of scenes added for someone who’s already fallen in love with the movie.

That’s exactly how I feel, too. The Despecialised Editions will always be my personal definitive version of the OT, but I love having different versions with different visions to enjoy in parallel.

I completely agree. I still love the down time with them for the reasons that it also is very much all visual storytelling and a good quieter part of the narrative after a strong action set piece on the Tantive IV. It gives us some time to process what we’ve seen so far before the story starts picking up again when we meet Luke. You need those quieter moments to contrast the bigger ones to get to know your characters. That’s partly why I think the down time in The Phantom Menace is so critical before the podrace. It gives us a chance to get to know Anakin as a person before he does something extraordinary.

It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

In RotJ, use footage of Ewoks on horses from the Ewok movies, but edited to be Orbaks, to go along with an edit or TRoS that makes Kef Bir Endor.

I enjoy the Special Edition Jabba scene in A New Hope and think it’s really cool that they went back and completed it (twice!), but ultimately feel it doesn’t belong in the movie simply because it depicts Jabba as deigning to personally go see every smuggler he’s got a beef with instead of sending underlings to take care of it. But it might be fun to experiment with Jabba confronting Han via hologram (which could have the secondary benefit of deemphasizing some pretty dated CGI and colors that don’t quite match the ROTJ puppet).

This is a really good idea, although a challeng to say the least as you would have to create a clean background to put the hologram on top. And you might have to cut the bit where Han moves behind Jabba or do some clever editing. (maybe there is a close up of Han talking which could bridge him walking to Jabbas left and standing to his right)

With Han moving behind the hologram, the most tricky part would probably be re-editing his movement to match his original path around the human actor. Filling in the detail on Han behind the hologram would be made easier by giving the hologram a bit more opacity and letting the details behind it blur a bit. The biggest issue here is that the hologram reacts as if his real tail is stepped-on, so you’d almost certainly have to cut away here regardless.

You could potentially have it flicker out while he’s ‘obscuring’ the projection, in that moment when he steps through.

That would make sense.

That gives me a lateral idea: I don’t know if there’s a restoration of the original Declan Mulholland Jabba scene available at good enough quality (I’ve only ever seen very patchy ones), but with some dialogue trims, it might be possible to make it seems like Declan Mulholland’s character is someone who works for Jabba.

I don’t think another of Jabba’s henchmen would work here as Han has just met Greedo and meeting another one wouldn’t add anything. But there is potential with the original scene I think.

Maybe Declan Mulholland’s character could be another crime boss to whom Han is in debt. Now Han wouldn’t just owe Jabba (which is bad enough really) but apparently the whole crime scene in Mos Eisley and to spice things up a little more Declan Mulholland’s character could also know that Han owes Jabba as well as him, which would add some nice similarities to the kanjiklub scene in TFA.

Anyway what I actually wanted to say was in regards to the Holo-Jabba idea. Maybe the Hologram could be projects by a big bulky Droid to cover most of the whole Jabba left.
Maybe a droid like this one:
droid

Or a modified Droideka with no guns but an extra array hanging below the snout.

JEDIT: don’t know why the picture isn’t there sorry. I had a clunky R1 Astromech in mind like the one on the sandcrawler in ANH.

And it’ll look even more out-of-place and terrible within the context of the movie.

No offense to the guys who worked on the video, but it completely clashes with the movie (even more than the work done in ‘97).

Exactly. That’s honestly my biggest problem with “Sc. 38”. It was an interesting experiment but I think it looks dookie and it’s almost always out of place in fan edits IMHO.

I just grazed around their video, a couple of the Y-Wing trench shots looked okayish however a lot of the rest that I saw just looked like a video game. Which the original movie did not (Revenge of the Sith OTOH).
The other problem is the massive bombardment of lasers flying at the ships, we don’t see anything like that before or after this scene in any of the movies, putting it in the movies would just be a massive speed bump.
Speaking of speed bumps, the one thing I would like to see someone fix is the cut that exists when ships are enterig the trench.
