It was supposed to jump into hyperspace at the final frames, but the animation looked extremely weird and I couldn’t get that hyperjump trail that poppasketti did.

I was playing around with tweaking the exchange a little bit for my version. So instead of “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me. I am ALL THE SITH!!” “And I…am all the Jedi.” I’d like it to go, “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me.” “And I…am [a] Jedi.” Suddenly it goes from a stupid game of one-upmanship (“I’m more powerful!” “No, I’m more powerful!”) to something that culminates Rey’s arc - both in terms of this movie (“rising” to become a Jedi, like Luke before her, rather than falling to the Dark Side as has been her fear), and also her arc across the trilogy, going from a poor scavenger to a powerful Jedi.

I mean, I guess you could argue that she’s accepting her responsibility of “a thousand generations live in [her] now”; but that seems less important to me than what she’s personally been struggling with this whole time. “I am all the Jedi” is the culmination of her arc of…trying one time to “hear the voices of the Jedi who came before,” and then suddenly being able to do it when the plot requires. Powerful stuff.

I’m just not sure how badly removing the word “all” will throw off the lip sync.

EDIT: Maybe I’ll mock something up tonight, if anyone is interested.

Alright, here’s a quick test of the idea. I’d probably want to smooth out some of the audio cuts a little more, but what do we think of it conceptually? Do the (potential) advantages to tone and theme outweigh the quick lip de-sync? How noticeable do you think it would be if people aren’t looking for it?

I definitely think the music needs to be shifted to let the Emperor’s theme play out, if possible, but I this works better than I thought it would. This dialogue interaction feels more natural to me, and fits well with Rey’s character arc.

I really like the idea but in that mockup I can’t not hear/semi-lipread it as “I… all the Jedi.”, for some reason. Is it possible to cut to Rey’s face later, or would we need to bust out some AI lip changing tech for this one?

I was concerned about that too. I would personally be iffy about cutting to Rey’s face later - you’d have to start the line when the camera is still focusing on the lightsaber, and I feel like it would lose something as a result. And anything that involves fancy CGI tricks is going to be outside of my wheelhouse, I’m afraid. (But hey, if someone else knows how…)

Maybe we could try to fudge it with a quick cross dissolve?

I’d like the new line to work, of course. But if it doesn’t, then oh well.

Personally I think the issue is with the audio we have to work with. This edit is as smooth as it could possibly get, but the line read still sounds mumbled and rushed - an unavoidable artifact of how Daisy Ridley delivers the original line. I think this change works brilliantly in theory, but I can’t think of any other solution than dubbing in a soundalike.

I know there’s a lot of AI things out there which replicate people’s voices reading funny things (eg Alec Guinness reading the Darth Plagueis copypasta), surely it would be possible to get a Daisy Ridley one to say four words.

Personally, I didn’t think the de-sync was too egregious.

Really wish “All the Sith” line was still in there though.

Put together a little concept for you’re Falcon ending idea.

I think it’d look really good if it flew over briefly instead of instantly jumping to light speed would be such a great ending calling directly back to the first ever Star Wars scene

Anjohan, thank you for your thoughts. Interesting to hear from someone for whom Ascendant was their first viewing of the film. I tend to agree with your overall assessment, that the movie is really an unfortunate conclusion to the saga and doesn’t leave fan editors much of the usual gifts. It’s a frustrating movie that we’ve been able to improve to a satisfying degree, though it remains a mess.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts if you skim through the cut list, if you haven’t already.

Uhm, I could perhaps do so after work. Sorry for late response. I actually dont like Star Wars anymore. I know it sounds silly, but its true. Im always lurking on the Fanedits of other projects thread and completely forget about SW edits. Also;

Also, I’m genuinely interested in your first impression of the added dialogue when the huge fleet arrives, since that was totally absent in the theatrical. Did it feel like an edit or addition by us?

Definitely did not feel like an edit. Good work.

I could see that working!! Beautiful.

@sherlock I’m really picky about things, but this works for me. I’ve watched it several times and even just listened to the audio. The dialogue is fine to me and sounds so much more natural and fits better than the original. To me at least.

I do agree the music cue needs some more work and needs some fine tuning. Maybe just be the empires thing up to the “music pause” that’s already there may be an idea to try?

EDIT: I am specifically talking about the first one since to me, if I should that to my wife, she wouldn’t notice any difference and it works. The music just needs a little tuning, but the dialogue is fine to me.

So excited to have those last few beats of the TFA credits song before the TROS credits kick in. Praying this comes to fruition, it would be such a bittersweet ending and not just another “copy” and “paste” of the last trilogy’s ending!

Agreed. If we’re going to keep “As all the Sith live in me” might as well include this as well.

Heres a mockup showing the Tatooine matte painting from ANH into the last shot of the Falcon leaving Tatooine. This is just a thing I mocked up in Photoshop and is not an actual 3D render, although the Falcon is the only 3D thing in that shot.

I attempted to give it that overly-teal look the color grading for TROS had, and added a lens flare which is JJ’s signature look.

Just photoshop, are you considering making the Tatooine angle upside down? Think it’d be better to harken back to original and keep it the same way up as ANH

Looks great! May look even better with the 2 suns in frame.

I played with @Dat_SW_Guy’s shot and flipped it around just so we’d have a visual how it could look, but replace the moons with the suns:
final shot

I think @Cinefy has a better approach though, but the Tatooine matte could be a little clearer.

I feel like it’s really difficult to realistically portray suns in CG, as there are too many factors to go along with it.

If we are talking from a realistic standpoint, those two suns would both be extremely white (or atleast one of them would be very slightly red) without the atmosphere due to lack of Rayleigh scattering (this is the reason why the sky is blue; the sun hits the atmosphere and in turn blue light is scattered more in the spectrum and the sun looks slightly yellow or red from the lack of the blue light.)

Also you have to consider the anamorphic lens flare, how bright you want the suns to be? (I presume they are in the Goldilocks region in which the sun is not too close, nor too far which can inhabit life so they’d be pretty bright if you point a camera at it) and the way it looks overall in terms of volumetric lighting and many, many factors which are insanely hard to pull off. Besides, the two suns are insanely close to each other that when viewed from space theyd look like a single giant light source.

For reference, here is how the sun actually looks like in space:

This is one of the reasons why you don’t actually see the sun nor the light source in Star Wars, since its very difficult to pull off. These shots were planned to avoid the light source to be shown.

However, I am thinking of planning two shots, mainly the first shot showing the Falcon leaving the homestead with the suns slowly rising up in the sky (as it has been stated here that this scene takes place at dawn) and the second of the planet to simply leave the Tatooine horizon and jump into hyperspace which then iris wipes to the credits.

I would use Adywan’s twin suns from Star Wars Revisited or “the sun” that Starkiller Base drains as reference points. The Star Wars galaxy is different than ours so I think making it look consistent to what is already there should be the focus.

Well, the VFX I’m doing should probably be consistent to how ILM is doing with the shots (in which they are mainly going for a realistic look, yet exaggerated to add more stylistic features) and viewing the Falcon shots in TROS, the only indication for a sun in space are sun rays (it’s impossible realistically but it works stylistically in the film which I’ll implement) and lens flares.

The only time we see a sun in the film is during the lightspeed skipping sequence, but its brightness levels are similar to a sunset and it’s really not as bright.

Besides, the suns will be in the shot (Falcon taking off from Homestead) preceding this final shot so we’ll still get that “suns in horizon” in the film.

Also this might take me 2 weeks to a month of work to finish these two shots because my computer is an extremely slow machine haha

Me too. I’ve always thought the weakest edit in V1 was the transition between the ending music and the credits. Adding in that motif really helps the transition and provides a more “triumphant” motif to end the saga on.
