Wait, so the Trade Federation is funding both sides of the war? Why would they even use such different armies? I’d expect them to just both use battle droids at that point.

No, the trade federation intended to replace their battledroids with clones but the republic got wind of this and payed the Kaminoans double to get the clone army. At least that’s the idea.

Here’s a different take on the Bail’s apartment scene with dialogue from The Force Unleashed:

It’s far from perfect, but there is potential I think.

“The constitution is in shreds! Amendment after amendment!”

Whoever wrote that line has no idea how government works. It always bothered me, and it’s why I’ve never liked that deleted scene.

A chancellor with unchecked power altering the constitution whenever he wants to stay in power forever? Yeah, no government has ever worked like that.

I can easily see amendments written which would destroy democracy, like making the Chancellors term in office, and his practical power…unlimited.

This comment has made me realize that “Amendment after amendment” might be saying that Palpatine is making amendments, not that George Lucas thinks amendments are like units of Constitution juice or something.

Still… what an incredibly awkward line. Don’t blame me for thinking “Amendment after amendment” meant “Amendment after amendment is in shreds” lol

Can you truly call that a working government?

Counterquestion: Is the Republic in ROTS a working government?

This whole scenario in this movie reminds me of the dying days of the Weimar Republic. During that time the parliament had little power and the chancellor was ruling with emergency powers authorized by the president, until he had enough and appointed a new chancellor.

This sounds almost exactly like the Chancellor appointing governors to bypass the senate in ROTS.

Now after Hindenburg died, Hitler took over and was now chancellor AND president. And it took only a few months until he had crippled the constitution to a point, that it barely deserved the name. He arrested many political enemies and suspended a number of articles and thus abolished all personal rights. After that the parliament had to surrender their legislative power to him, it’s important to point out that armed forces were present when the law was passed.

There you have your amendments to the constitution. With that in mind it’s really not that much of a silly line, but more of an expression of what state the Republic is in.

The Republic isn’t a working government. Corporations have seats as if they were systems.

Does anyone have clean audio of Obi-Wan’s Jedi Temple message from Rebels? I can find countless videos that have put their own music under it, but not just the dialogue itself.

Yes, but without music. I know a clean version must exist somewhere, because heaps of people have taken the speech and put their own soundtracks under it.

I checked the center channel of the 5.1 mix and it’s pretty clear but there’s a little bit of Luke’s theme in the back half.

PM me and I’ll send you a wav file if that sounds usable.

It’s more similar to the last days of the Roman Republic, when Augustus basically centered all power while keeping the Senate alive (and calling himself “primus inter pares”) as a facade.
Plus (without opening a discussion here, that’s the last thing I want) I think that line today is even more actual than it was back when the movie released. In Italy (I have a huge interest in politics, and I know some members of Parliament) the Parliament is being completely ignored by the government, thanks to the pandemic. Both last governments basically exploited every small clause in the Constitution in order to overrun the Parliament, which at this moment is basically powerless.

This is great, there’s definitely potential here. If this scene is placed somewhere after the ‘petition of 2000’ scene in Palpatine’s office, along with your take, it could help make this subplot the strong connection to the OT it should be. I think this restructure of the deleted scenes has been discussed earlier in this thread, but I can’t remember if anyone has attempted it.
