I love the idea of just editing tone-deaf product placement into dramatic scenes.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

Change everything so that the force is really about alcohol. When Obi-Wan says, “Use the force, Luke.” Luke finds a can of beer and guzzles it down. The first shot of Luke on Cloud City will be digitally altered so that Luke is drinking a pint before his confrontation with vader. In Episode II, when Mace Windu and friends arrive on Geonosis, every single jedi turns on their lightsabers and opens their bottles. Add in a line that mentions that Vader’s suit is fueled by alcohol which is why he is strong in the force. Also, redub and/or alter every line said by jedi and sith so that their speech sounds slurred. The list of changes could go on forever.

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.

The sequel trilogy then becomes about finding the ghost of Luke and Rey’s unreasonable demand that he come out of ghost retirement to save the galaxy and then give up his ghost body to truly dissolve into the Force, before inexplicably returning for one scene.

JEDIT: I suddenly realize that this is actually a really interesting idea, or a version of it where Luke dies in the scene where he tries to kill Ben.

I thought this in the moment after Kylo sliced through Luke and turned to see he was still standing in the theater, so make it a reality:

Luke was dead all along on that island. Anytime Rey’s eyes aren’t on him throughout TLJ, give him a ghost effect. For example, when she closes her eyes to meditate, the effect kicks in until the moment she next sees him.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Alec Guinness joins Luke in TROS on Ach-To in sharing guidance with Rey.

“Don’t be afraid, Rey. By the way, have you tried KFC? It’s been scientifically proven to boost midi-chlorian performance.”

Basically like Auralnauts.

It’s a video of Daisy Ridley talking to camera, and she says: “My name is Rey. Rey Skywalker. Well, actually it’s just Rey. Technically, it should be Rey Palpatine. But I was mentored by a Skywalker even though he was kind of a dick to me. So yeah… Rey Skywalker. That’s me.”

Replace all voices of the Empire (stormtroopers, commanders, leaders, grand moff tarkin, etc.) with the voices of the french taunters from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Come to think of it, maybe that isn’t a bad edit idea.

Remove the “I am your father” scene from ESB in its entirety.

You know, that would actually make the ending of ESB like the ending of AOTC, and suddenly the problem with that film’s climactic encounter becomes a lot more clear.

Because it doesn’t have a plot twist?

Not trying to say AOTC is as good as ESB (far from it) I’m just trying to figure out what you mean.

I mean that the ending of ESB is more pointedly existential than AOTC and it retains its focus on the core drama.

In ESB, Luke also has a loyalty to his friends which runs counter to his Jedi requirements which alone is capable of turning him from his path, except in ESB this problem is highlighted when he realizes that his entire reason for becoming a Jedi (his father) has been corrupted. It is so existential that Luke would rather die than choose. It doesn’t need to be a plot twist to serve this function, but it helps.

In AOTC, the big drama is how Anakin has a romantic interest which runs counter to everything the Jedi require him to be. However, the closest Anakin comes to breaking from the Jedi is after Padme falls from the ship, but he eventually relents. The struggle is never truly existential for Anakin, in that he must choose Padme’s life or the Jedi way - that happens in ROTS. While Luke throws himself to his (supposed) death to avoid this choice, for Anakin the choice is deferred and he ends up in a fight with someone he practically just met and who isn’t even directly involved in Anakin’s core drama. We could have just as easily followed the end of AOTC from Padme’s perspective trapped on that dune and nothing of the core drama would have been lost.

I know the Worst Ideas thread isn’t usually the place for nuanced discussion, but I’ve never seen ESB and AOTC compared in this way. I wonder how AOTC could’ve been plotted differently to be more like ESB.

Maybe, instead of relenting, Anakin could’ve jumped out of the ship and left Obi-Wan to fight Dooku on his own. Obi-Wan loses and Dooku escapes, and we’re left to wonder if Anakin had stayed, could the war have ended the day it began? This could fuel Anakin’s motivation to fight in this war and take more drastic measures to try and end it, leading him on the path to the dark side.

It’s an anti-copyright soundalike. They all do that. Surely you’ve heard one on a YouTube parody before, right?

I guess the difference in AOTC and ESB is that ESB is the nadir of Luke’s arc, right at the midpoint of his overall narrative - the OT. But Anakin/Vader’s overall narrative is the PT and the OT, so the midpoint (and thus nadir) of his arc is the ending of ROTS, not the ending of AOTC. In that sense of comparison, the ending of AOTC is more akin to Luke escaping the trash compactor.

Anyway, not the thread for it. What I was actually going to say was:

Create a new opening title and crawl for Solo to bring the opening credits stylistically in line with the main saga films, but attach it to the start of the Harrison Ford movie Hanover Street instead. Once the film is finished, iris out to Solo’s end credits.

Insert the following into ESB:

Now the twist when you watch the movies in chronological order is that Anakin was right; Padme was turned against him because she cheated on him with Obi-Wan.
