This is the best I’ve seen it so far, but I’m still not buying those shots in the sitting on a log scene. Way too warm and bright.

Harsh, but fair.

But I can’t look at it anymore tonight, my eyes are more tired than this movie’s cliche’s.

JEDIT: One thing that I’ve noticed while working on this is that I ‘buy’ Luke’s ghost much more in dark scenes. There’s a good reason the previous films only showed Force Ghosts at night.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Hopefully more constructive than harsh! It seems like it could be doable.

Perhaps the log scene could be darkened, but I feel like it works for me pretty well. I feel like if the colors were like this in the film, I would understand that dawn was approaching.

Since we don’t see the sun crest until the x-wing scene, up til then should really have that dim blue look.

I’m glad the Become line is working better! Let me know if anyone else notices something wrong with it though!

No sound, for even my love has limits. And I don’t have a good source 😉

Anyway, there’s no second establishing shot since I’m not sure if it can be made dark enough for these scenes.

The fireside chat is just about as dark as it will get, methinks, and the light entering the hut is slightly brighter to give more of a gradient into morning.

Daammmnnn Neverar, those early shots look fantastic. I was actually playing around with it myself, to see if I could make the scene any more “Night-y”; but you managed the orange mask on Rey way better than I did.

There were still a couple of things that I wanted to try though. I used Neverar’s edit as the base, and left their early bonfire shots as is. Additionally:

  • Tried to make the original establishing shot match the nighttime tone. (Moved Neverar’s new establishing shot back to its original spot.)
  • The Fireside Chat still seemed too bright to me, especially since the Hut Scene seemed darker in comparison. I’ve tried to go through and darken it up a bit.
  • After darkening, I tracked a light mask around Luke in all of his shots. It just felt like, against the darkness, his Force Ghost-ness should shine extra bright to me.
  • Also increased the relative brightness around the fire during their chat.
  • Finally, I experimented with a purple hue during sunrise, to symbolize Leia('s (new) lightsaber). Thus, Rey “feels” both of her masters supporting her. Also, as the X-Wing rises, the sky starts adding pinks and oranges into the mix. The coloring would have to be cleaned up more though before release.

During the flashback, I also replaced the Blue Leia lightsaber with the Ascendant Purple Leia lightsaber, without further color corrections. I like the purple; what can I say?

That looks incredible. My only criticism is that Luke is a bit too bright during the nighttime scenes - I can understand the thematic reasons for doing it, but Obi-Wan in ESB didn’t seem to provide illumination or glow brightly. Maybe it’s just me, but it makes him stand out slightly too much from the surrounding scene.

The colour grading on the sunrise is absolutely exquisite.

I think this is really starting to work. I’m wondering if the Porg shot should be removed as their lighting seems way off?

Those couple of Luke outside shots make it feel like it’s getting lighter, not darker but the overall feel to this scene is pretty great.

I always find it best to work on a clip until I can’t anymore, take a day off and then revisit with fresh eyes. You guys are doing a great job. Most impressive.

NeverarGreat - thank you so much for creating such a beautiful edit.

It’s better than I could have ever imagined

The footage when Luke is in the hut and then raises the X wing. How the hell is it the same footage from the release movie, its unrecognizable. Wow!

I think the porg shot is fine, personally.

You wouldn’t get that rear, pure white lighting effect around them from moonlight. It would be a lot softer. Just my thoughts though.

EDIT: Here’s a good fire reference. Maybe try a colour change from White to Orange just for that clip?

JEDIT: Just realised the lighter sky in Luke’s close up is from his glow. Did you use a fathered mask or a glow effect for that?

Wondering if this will help https://youtu.be/CKyztMknex0

While Ach-To is in the conversation, can we talk about “It was fear that kept me here”? I know I’m just parroting Nerrel’s video, but ever since he pointed it out I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Luke was kept there by shame, and a genuine belief that the Jedi are a bad thing. It’s a hard thing to reconcile with TROS’s conversation, but I think “it was shame that kept me here” and “what are you most ashamed of” (in a Rey Palpatine cut, of course) would make a lot more sense. Not that I have a good way to implement that or anything.

Can’t pull the wool over your eyes, eh, MR? You’re right - I was trying to do it with a feathered mask. I’ll take a look at that video later; thanks for the reference!

That looks pretty good, the only thing I notice is the first establishing shot, it just looks like it’s bright and sunny and someone turned down the brightness.

Can we just have Luke say “Because you’re a Skywalker” and be done with it?

i really like this…

the dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural

Wizards of sound and editing, i had an idea…
what about when Palpatine confronts Rey in Exegol, instead of he saying “Weak, like your parents”, he says “Weak, like your masters”?
And Rey response goes by: “My masters (Luke and Leia, booth dead) were strong!”
I think it centers more the plot around the trilogy and the idea of the Skywalker legacy that rey carries, instead of adding to the already convoluted plot of Rey lineage.
I don’t know if it is plausible to do this, but i though it was worthy the provocation.

I decided to cut that line and just have a slight pause after Luke says “I was wrong!” just to let it sink in. Fear keeping him there didn’t seem right when he also says “Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi”

I’d love to have Luke say “because you’re a Skywalker” at that point but there wouldn’t be any follow-up other than the end line. It would make more sense if she were, IMO

I think Luke’s comment on fear is much more thematically relevant to this film’s story. Rey and Luke each gave into fear of their inner darkness/failure and exiled themselves. I like that little scene the way it is and don’t plant to change it or further truncate it.

Nev, that’s a distinct improvement! The establishing shot at the beginning is perfect. Rey throwing stuff at Ren’s TIE feels perhaps too orange now that the sun(s) has/have set. Would feel right for a sunset but now for dusk, IMO.
The sitting on a log scene looks good, though there are three or four shots that would benefit from masking the sky in order to darken it further.
I wonder if it’d be even better to have the hut interior pre-flashback as being pretty darn dark outside, then a bit lighter post-flashback, leading into a sunrise as she heads outdoors.
Also, it feels in isolation that the sunrise feels more like a sunset with this grade. Maybe in reality sunrise and sunset look similarly orange, but it feels more like a sunset to me. Not sure if that’s useful!

Sherlockpotter, I think a tiny bit of purple could be nice, but nothing near the level in that clip.

Fantastic work so far; nothing surprises me anymore. I’m sure this scene will get into sublime shape.

Good to know, Hal. My monitor ain’t the best. We can definitely tone that down. And going off of what hinventon said, I don’t think my first establishing shot works after all. It was worth a try, but Neverar came up with a far cleaner solution.

EDIT: Yeah, the orange is from the fire. I like it, but maybe it could be worth trying to whiten it a bit. If that makes it look too “daytime” though; I think I’d rather have the orangey fire glow, myself.

No. He feared he’ll only make things worse by making a difference to the galaxy, he caused Ben Solo’s fall and if he creates more Jedi more of 'em will turn to the dark side and more children taken from their families (referring to the aforementioned Jedi) would be killed and more destruction would be brought (i.e. the entire Clone Wars).

I feel like we should use a different establishing shot instead of the one from TLJ, people will notice it’s obviously from TLJ.

What shot do you mean? The only shot added to the sequence is taken from a documentary about Skellig Michael.

EDIT: That same documentary has a nice overhead shot of the island that might look better for nighttime conditions. Nev, it’s in the clip I sent you to begin with if you agree.

While we’re on the topic of additional lines that might warrant some tweaking, I have a few contenders:

  • Rey’s line about “I will earn your brother’s saber…someday.” There’s never been any indication that she felt unworthy using the lightsaber in the previous two movies, and she doesn’t end up “earning” the saber at all; it’s just handed back to her five minutes later. Also, Rey ends up using an entirely different saber in the finale? And she gives Luke’s to Kylo? (The only rationalization I can think of is that it’s subtextually foreshadowing “Ben will earn your brother’s saber”? But that’s unbelievably messy, even by this film’s lofty standards.) I dunno, it doesn’t make much sense. It’s another “Rey, I never told you- Blurgbruglbgrub” - They set something up, and then they forgot to pay it off. Maybe Rey could simply say “Here,” as if she’s just “hanging up” her weapon after practice? Or reverse the footage - Leia gives the saber back to Rey as a show of encouragement? (Implied that Rey gave it to her after the training course out of frustration.)

  • Trimming around Hux’s “I’M THE SPY!!” “*WhAaAaAaAT???” ThisIsCreation had a really solid idea for this on the Redux thread. It’s like “You were a spice runner??” to me - out of place humor that breaks what should be a tense moment. (I know I lost that argument, I’m not trying to restart it.)

  • “Leia sensed the death of her son at the end of her Jedi path.” So she decided not to pursue being a Jedi, which resulted in…the death of her son, her own death, and the rise of the First Order and the destruction of the New Republic at the hands of her son? Way to go, idiot, you played yourself! If Luke just says “She sensed ‘death’ at the end of her Jedi path,” it’s at least vague enough that we can assume the alternative future would have been even worse.

Script is whack, yo.
