Agreed. I thought I remembered a mock-up shot with the castle in the background with the TIEs flying towards the camera over some burnt up trees. I liked that one shot a lot more.

That clip is only a couple of seconds long I’m pretty sure.

It could be like this:

TIEs approach Mustafar -> Poppa’s shot of TIEs and trees -> Fly over trees with castle in background (possibly extend without the TIEs to focus on the environment) -> Kylo fighting

This proposed order would allow us “the audience” to follow the TIEs down to the planet as they approach an environment similar to Kylo’s before we cut to his rampage

I would also suggest throwing on a subtle 35mm film grain overlay to help mask the fact that it’s a video game. The sequels were shot on film after all, so it’d fit well anyways. That + 24fps + color grading/adjusting exposure are all that I can think of to make a video game look like real footage.

I wanna add grain to all the scenes I’ve been doing but haven’t looked yet. Is it an Pr or Ae effect? I’d like to know what setting you use if I May?

Pretty sure you can do it in AE if you want but I’ve only ever tried it in Pr. Basically there’s 2 options - use the noise filters built into premiere and adjust them to look like film sort of like this https://youtu.be/k7P_sSUH9fE or the other method is you download an actual clip of 35mm camera footage that’s just blank grain and then you go into opacity settings, set blend mode as “overlay”, and then adjust opacity from there. Sorta like this https://youtu.be/g_lEPb5-_9I

Now for the sequels their film grain is pretty subtle so you obviously don’t want to go overboard and make it look like something out of the original trilogy but you get the idea. The process isn’t 100% accurate to real film grain but it’s very close and for our purposes of just adding it for a few shots it’ll do just fine, in my opinion.

Just a few interesting concept arts for those who are working on Rey’s crackling saber - it seems like the crystal itself was not broken in The Last Jedi.

Although, I appreciate all the work put into it and prefer the crackling saber over the theatrical one by far.

The concept art may not show a broken crystal but the movie clearly shows it in two pieces

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Its the scene with Luke and Rey. Mark, The hair is … very wiglike and it helps that Jonh gave him a “haircut” to help remove it wiggyness.

Thats obviously the technical explanation. haha!

Agreed. You can clearly see a sizable chunk of blue crystal in Rey’s right hand in that shot.

Well, whenever you notice something like that, a secrets-only-the-sith-knew did it.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”

Oh cool. Yeah, ep1 was on film and had way too much grain when compared to recent footage. I tried it in AE but I could see much difference. I’ll give it another try. Thanks.

Yeah, I first thought it was just the body that snapped by later viewings shows the crystal did break in half so I’m going with that.

Yeah that’s why you gotta be really subtle with it, I’d just compare back and forth with Skywalker footage. I mean I know for sure they shot on film, but the type of camera and how much DNR they used makes the amount of the grain change. Like u said Phanton Menace was also shot on film but it was more noticeable then they went digital for 2 and 3

Didn’t someone recently modify the lighting of the shot with Leia holding the medal in closeup? If so, can you send that to me to implement before I get the chance to forget about it?

Does any have the new shot of the TIEs flying towards the camera over the trees?

I know it was posted in this thread but can’t seem to find.

When the TIEs are directly in front of the castle, they appear to be considerably more fakey fake computer generated (maybe because of the way they move) than any other shot. I think that alone is throwing some of us off.

I haven’t noticed any issues with the video game footage at all, to be quite honest, but the consensus was clear that using it would throw a lot of people.

For what’s worth, the extended opening with the video game footage has grown on me, I think t really adds more to the scene and it clearly shows how powerful is the first order compared to the neo-rebels.

So long 🙌

Speaking of video game footage, I’ve managed to get a new version of the Ajan Kloss clip directly off a friend’s PS5. It’s not as good as 4k max settings on a PC sadly, and saving footage on the console itself isn’t as good as using a capture card, but Battlefront 2 on PS5 does use improved effects/textures/lighting over the last gen, with the difference being noticeable compared to the clip that was posted here a few days ago (which originated from a standard Xbox One). It’s also still 1080p/60fps.

If anyone wants to try messing around with it, here’s a download (don’t watch in browser, the preview is terrible).

Edit: it occurs to me that the clip may be more washed out than it should be due to an issue with the recording. I’ll look into fixing the issue, but if anyone wants to try the existing clip anyway, please do so.

I know I mentioned it as a potential suggestion - just to make the insert feel more connected to the surrounding footage, since the lighting behind Leia is so striking. I’m not sure if anyone actually worked on the shot though.

Here’s my attempt at a more muted color correction/cropped/4K scaling/23.97FPS/grainy noise filter experiment on the footage. See if this shot looks any good for the film.

Edit: Removed for now. See my later post for newer version.

I think it looks pretty okay, but it also looks too fast to be a good establishing shot. If there’s some way to slow it down, maybe record it on a PC with an even-higher framerate or just straight-up interpolate it, that might be better.

The contrast looks a little low - the blacks are quite grey compared to the unaltered footage, at least on my monitor.

I think adding the shot is a good idea, though - I’ve watched TROS in various edits half a dozen times, and until I saw this shot, I had no idea what the layout of the Resistance base was supposed to be. Was someone going to try interpolating the footage to get a higher framerate, or am I misremembering that? That would allow it to be slowed down, increasing the length of the shot and making the frame track look more like a physical camera movement.
