The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 335

Nah, Leia’s being blue makes more sense than it being purple; the two lightsabers being blue represents Skywalker, Rey is holding back Palpatine with Skywalker (you know what I mean…).

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot which I haven’t seen anyone else discussing: would it be in any way possible to replace Leia’s lightsaber with Luke’s green one?

The whole thing about Leia training to be a Jedi (and the floating CGI head Billie-Lourd-Leia flashback) feels so out of character and wrong to me. Plus, the green would cause a change in overall lighting colour during the final confrontation with Palpatine, just as the balance of power changes, which appeals to me thematically as Rey representing all the different Jedi.

Part of me feels that Rey holding the lightsabers of the two Skywalkers who helped shaped her to be the Jedi she now is -
holding their legacy against the man who ruined their lives - is more symbolic and meaningful.

I agree with this in theory, but the baggage that it needs for it to work (the whole “Leia as a Jedi with a lightsaber, but she gives it up because of a vision of her son dying or whatever”) is so convoluted and awkward that it’s not worth the tradeoff for me.

Luke’s blue lightsaber and Luke’s green lightsaber, on the other hand, represents the unity between new youth on the path to being Jedi (blue, Luke in ANH/ESB) and the wisdom of a past Jedi Master (green, Luke in ROTJ/TLJ).

If they really wanted to go the route of using her masters’ sabers, I wish they would’ve just gone with Luke’s green saber and a purple saber for Leia. But then again my real preference would’ve been turning Anakin’s broken saber into a double-bladed one since the kyber crystal was split into two pieces and Rey grew up fighting with a staff

Agreed. It was set up so nicely at the end of TLJ and I was baffled and disappointed when I watched TROS and the saber was somehow fixed with a strip of Flex Tape.

I tried re-balancing the audio mix so that the Kylo and Rey themes are more pronounced than the DOTF. Hopefully it makes the score feel less at-war with itself. Does it work any better, or is this still a case of “less is more”?

I thought this version worked quite well!

I don’t understand how Luke’s saber and Luke’s saber signifies unity of anyone, considering they both belong to one person. Luke being a master and Luke being an apprentice aren’t different things to be unified… it’s still just one person’s mentality.

That’s just me though.

I’m not sure this discussion belongs in this thread. Hal’s been on board with using Leia’s purple for a good while, and replacing either blade with Luke’s RotJ hilt and blade is a lot of work that would frankly just result in narrative confusion and unnecessary fan service with little thematic meaning (as mentioned, she’s already taking one of Luke’s blades to Exegol regardless). It’s also pretty late in the game to bring this up, considering editors are finishing up the unstable blade effect for Rey’s blue blade and the effects for Leia’s purple have been done and implemented for months.

Unless Hal specifically comes in saying it’s a great idea, or someone is already able and willing to make a demo, this would probably be better suited to the general Sequel Edits threads.

Yes, I agree.

So apparently that animation is already finished, too. By Petrovelly (says so in description). But only viewable on their SubscribeStar. Doubt they are willing to share it, either.
IMO just kinda sucks that this fan editing community’s manpower is being divided because the Fixing Disney Star Wars team is using financial contributions.
EDIT: I realize they likely wouldn’t be able to create that Mustafar shot without that money, but it still seems kinda scummy imo.

I signed up just to see that clip. I applaud them for the effort, but rest assured that what we have looks better.

If you want to see it, PM me.

Alright so I agree to a certain extent that the second shot doesn’t look completely movie quality. Additionally, there is no forest anywhere in that shot by the castle, which makes no sense. And I think it would have been better to use the TIES instead of Kylo’s ship.

I did enjoy their version of the castle in ruins, though. And they did say it was only 90% done so who knows if that second shot would improve.

That’s nice, if someone could take that and animate some TIES over it it might look great with the forest shot we have already.

As I said, the shot actually has Kylo’s ship flying across the screen. Also that watermark is stuck there, for now.

Additionally, there is the concern of legality. I’m fairly certain that since the CGI was commissioned, by all rights that video belongs to the Fixing Disney Star Wars team. We would have to communicate with them or settle some sort of deal in order to use it.

Do you? I mean, it is Star Wars content, so they don’t own the rights to it even if they made it. Of course we normally ask for permission to use stuff in this context, but it isn’t a question of legality.

I’m not an expert in law, I was just guessing with my limited knowledge tbh. You’re probably right.

the VFX work they are doing is amazing (far better than what i expected), i think we’ll have a lot to prospect after the release of their edits

They’re using Hollywood CGI artists and paying a massive amount for them. I’m using one of their guys who’s charging £100 per second which is a bargain, IMO. We’re just fortunate to have a lot of artists willing to make amazing graphics/audio/LUTs in their own time in this community.

These aren’t finished scenes. Just teasers to raise funds. This is the closest to finished scene quality they’re producing https://youtu.be/yLT3UCbuoms

Fair use implies you use it for educational, transformative or parody. They’re creating new scenes which falls under transformative.

They’re raising money to cover costs but the film will be free on release. It’s a grey area in non profit “fan films” but it’s a case by case study. Star wars theory is allowed to raise funds elsewhere but can’t solely do it for one project. Fan films are a risky business so it’s always best to cover your ass before asking anyone to donate.

Have they even finished one of their fan edits? The last time I checked Fixing Disney Star Wars channel they were deepfaking the entire Solo movie along with redubbing it with a Harrison Ford impersonator.

Author

It’s all vaporware until there’s something finished and put out there.

I’m not concerned about it. I don’t think they’d have much of a leg to stand on if anyone did want to lift their work which is based on copyrighted works, but I don’t think we’ll even need to. We’ll do what we can and it’ll be grand.

“Would you like to discuss this with the Hutts? I’m sure they can settle this.”

They have a link to their Parler account in the description. That’s gonna be a very hard no from me.

Author

Well that’s a no from me. I’m sure it’ll go the same way as steemit, dtube etc.

I like YouTube’s current policies. They cover themselves and content creature but I am opposed to them shadow banning innocent channels and doing thinking about it.

I’m sure this is a conversation for another thread though?
