2.d. Piracy & Try Before You Buy - You hear (even in this thread) from "otherwise honest people" that a reason for pirating games is so that they can, essentially, demo the game.  I think a lot of those same people then conveniently forget to "purchase" the game until after they have completed it, and then what's the point?  However, being a reasonably honest person and embarking on an average gaming rig has made me think once or twice that it would be nice to "demo" something before purchasing it.

2.d.i. You know, like with a demo.

2.e. Above is an argument for demos lessening the reasons (the stated reasons, anyhow) for piracy... could demos also lead to piracy?  I don't think so... but maybe that's a reason why PC games generally ditched the practice.

2.f. And since you can't borrow/loan (generally) PC games...

2.g. Who ever played a SNES demo?  Did they have N64 demos?  Back in the day, one of the advantages that PC could lord over their console brethren.  I don't know if PS1 did any demos, and I think it was a limited practice on PS2 and oXbox.  It's really taken off as a console feature on consoles... about the same time it shut down on PC.

2.g.i. What gives?

The end.

But not a single mention of the Force Unleashed games?  Has everyone here given them a fair shake?

I played the demo for the first game and decided I would pass on it.  I had a friend pressure me into playing the full game, and I'm glad I did.  I found the game much more enjoyable than I would have thought- given the demo.

Same reaction here when I played a bit of it... meh, then turned it off. Didn't like the character animation or the general feel of how it played. Maybe I should give it another go if you say it gets better.

Certainly to each their own, but mine is not the only opinion that the game was much better than the demo let on.

RE: Xhonzi's continuing thoughts on a possible return from PC-Gaming-Retirement

1. So... Duck Tales comes out on XBLA tomorrow... for the same price it's been on PS3 and PC for the past several weeks.  I am buying it on Xbox (most likely) for a couple of reasons.

1.a. I have to keep reminding myself that Steam is a single user environment.  Mrs. xhonzi and I are playing Trine 2 together (ah, yeah... some classic splitscreening ON AN UNSPLIT SCREEN!) and only I get achievements and whatnot.  Not that she cares... but, it's the principle of the thing.  At any rate, I've only really purchased single player games that will be played (or not, as is so often the case with Steam) by me.

1.b. However, I know my kids will at least want to play Duck Tales and will want to play on their own accounts- save their own progress, and get their own achievements.  Hmmm... stick a feather in the (current) console DRM schema as it is more family friendly, which, as a Dadgamer, is pretty important to me.  However!  For what I've paid on Steam for some games, it would be cheaper to buy multiple copies on Steam than a single console copy.

2. There is a serious lack of demos on Steam!  I think it might be rough to be an XBLA developer and be forced by MS to have a day/date demo for each XBLA title released... and you have to wonder how many XBLA demos turn off potential buyers... but it really beneifts the consumer!  I've played the demo for tonnes of stinkers that I never purchased, though I thought I might.

2.a. However, when you buy a game on XBLA/PSN, you can be reasonably confident that it will play well on your rig.  It has been developed for your hardware/controller.  There are always going to be the New Vegas 1.0 experiences like certain unnamed (C3PX) members of this thread have had... but for the most part, you don't have to wonder if your console will run the game at a playable clip, and whether it supports your controller.

2.b. So it surprises me that PC demos are more or less a thing of the past.  (Yes, there are some on Steam, but maybe about 1% of the games are represented.)  Sure, PC games seem to be more compatible with various hardware than ever, and I've been pretty surprised at how well my not-that-great-even-last-year-when-I-bought-it AMD laptop has been chewing up some recent releases... but still.  I've bought several games for cheap on Steam wondering if my rig would be able to handle them at all.  The 360 controller has emerged as the official unofficial Steam controller, but there are still some surprises when you find out that game doesn't support it (or your controller of choice) natively or well.  Oh, that would have been nice to know before you bought it.

2.c. Back to Duck Tales, it has been reported that the control scheme on the Steam version is a little 'wonky'.  Most of the otherwise positive reviews have complained about it.  It's been called "game breaking" by some.

2.c.i. I will know how well the game controls on the 360 before I've dropped one dime on it tomorrow.

Bobba Fett wouldn't need to visibly cloak his ship as the Falcon has no rear windows or anyway to physically see him following.

Like I said, adywan already handled this. Slave 1 waits longer to follow. The Falcon doesn't have rearview mirrors,

Nuh-uh!  The Falcon does so have rearview mirrors.  If not, then what do the metalic fuzzy dice hang on, smarty pantses?

I said "windows", not mirrors!

YOU SAID ANYTHING TO PHYSICALLY SEE HIM!

I won't answer the original question- all of my favourites have been well covered...

I also fell more in love with the game when I played it on its hardest difficulty.  What was once just a button masher became a tactical skill based game.  (Watch out for the boss at the end of level 2, however.  He was darn near impossible on 'nightmare')

Force Unleashed 2 felt more like a 6 hour DLC than a sequel, but as long as you only paid $10 for it (like me!) then you could just consider it a pretty darn good $10 stand alone DLC!

The best parts, however, are the OT Infinities DLC.  They are 3 "What if?" missions that take the place of ANH, ESB, and RotJ.  Lots of fun.  You kill Obi-Wan (twice!), Han, Chewie, Leia and Luke  (by throwing the Falcon at him- no joke!)

The story is fun, and well told, though I wouldn't consider it canon.  It has good characters and is, I would argue, the most OTish Lucasfilm product of the past 20 years.

Halloween Costumes '09 through '012 (was Costumes '09)
Time

Mrs. xhonzi said we should do Star Wars again soon (maybe next year), but different costumes.

She wants to be Leia (<crossed fingers>Sexy Slave Leia, Sexy Slave Leia</crossed fingers>)
I would, presumably, be Han*
My 10 year old boy wants to be Luke (he thinks Endor Luke, but I'm going to suggest RotJ Duel Luke)
My 6 year old girl wants to be RD22 (just like last time, but pink and with an actual tutu)
My 4 year old boy wants to be Vader, since he has a red sabre.

And my 8 year old girl wants to be, drum roll please:

Ada Larkin.

That would be awesome!

Zardoz (1974)

I expected this to be one of those silly "so-bad-they're-good" Star Wars/Mad Max knockoffs that proliferated the 80's, but I was surprised by how beautifully made this movie actually was. The homoerotic red undies aside, I think this is an incredibly deep, emotional movie that is unfairly mocked for no good reason and is criminally underrated.

Anyone who isn't able to understand and/or appreciate the nature of non-linear/surrealist/Dadaist/absurdist films probably will think I'm just pulling their leg here, but this is my honest-to-God opinion on the film.

Nice to see a little Zardoz love around here. Part of the problem is most people have likely seen the version that used to air on tv. It was pretty hacked up for broadcast standards, and important plot points were lost. I had no idea what happens to Sean's character at the end until I saw it uncut on home video years later.

I was blissfully unaware of Zardoz until a couple of years ago.  The trailer was on some classic Sci-Fi DVD I rented.  If you're unaware of this movie, go watch the trailer NOW!

It was so bizzare... it felt like finding out that my parents used to be [REDACTED].

I finally tracked the movie down expecting it to be so ridiculous that my head would pop off of my shoulders... and I was disappointed.  Because compared to the trailer, the movie is fairly sensical.  So... I'd say, for maximum ridiculous enjoyment, just watch the trailer over and over again.

It's terribly delicious!

I just want to say everybody here sucks for not liking and playing the games I like and play and leaving nobody for me to talk to about them.

That is all.

P.S. The next game I will be purchasing is Rage. In the interest of not sucking, buy it.

Can I buy it in 2 years?  Will I not suck then?

Oh, man... I just bought Rage.  Looks like it was a couple weeks too early.

For anyone sweating bullets on this issue, please relax: We got 005 into the Steam Group.

For anyone following or wondering if they should join the Steam Group, please be advised that Johnny Ringo is the Player of the Week.

And for anyone wanting System Shock 2 (or named C3PX), be advised that Good Ol' Games (gog.com) has it for $2.50.  I have this version and it works just fine on my 64bit Windows 7 machine.

That is all.
