Sadly I paid money for Orson's work before finding out he was a bigoted nutcase.

Bigoted nutcase?

Doesn't boycotting his fiction because you don't agree with his personal views make you sort of a bigot as well?

No it makes me a selective consumer, especially seeing as the chap in questioning is bigoting my crowd.

I thought your crowd was supposed to be tolerant?

Bobba Fett wouldn't need to visibly cloak his ship as the Falcon has no rear windows or anyway to physically see him following.

Like I said, adywan already handled this. Slave 1 waits longer to follow. The Falcon doesn't have rearview mirrors,

Nuh-uh!  The Falcon does so have rearview mirrors.  If not, then what do the metalic fuzzy dice hang on, smarty pantses?

RE: Riddick

As far as I can tell, the new movie will be more like a sequel to Pitch Black with little regard to what happened in Chronicles.

I'm pretty bummed as I, unlike you, prefered the 'destiny/fantasy' elements of Chronicles.  I liked Pitch Black okay, but I was really interested in where the story would go after Chronicles.

The new movie seems to be a "It's dark, things are attacking us, I guess we'll have to work with Riddick so at least some of us will live" plot again, which I don't think I have much interest in seeing again.

I did think the DC of Chronicles was superior, but not terribly so.  I think the scene with the Furian Elemental helped round out the mystical part of the movie.

I liked to think that Pitch Black:Chronicles Trilogy was as Hobbit:LotR.  A simple tale that puts some pieces in place so that the epic story can begin.  Now that the epic story of Riddick is:

(*Spoilers*)

BB: Riddick is Captured and then Escapes From Supermax
DA: Riddick is Captured and then Escapes from Slavers
PB: Riddick is a Captive, Kills Dark Beasties, and then Escapes
DF: Riddick is Captured, and then Escapes from Slavers (again)
CR: Riddick, the last Furian, has a destiny to kill the leader of a giant army of Necros.  Along with some allies, he risks all to save a young woman whom he unintentionally led into a dangerous lifestyle, being chased by the Necro leader all the while.  Meanwhile, Vaako, a high ranking Necro, and his wife plot an overthrow of their leader.  Continuing his quest to rescue his friend/right a previous wrong, Riddick planet hops to save poor Jack.  She dies anyways, causing Riddick to unleash his anger, fullfill a prophecy, and end up the leader of the army.  Where to now, Riddick?  Your move.
R: Riddick is captured, Kills Dark Beasties, and then escapes? (again?)

It seems Chronicles was an odd day that Riddick did something other than get captured, kill some stuff, and escape.  Not so epic afterall.  :/

Here's hoping Riddick wins me over!  But I have to imagine it won't.  :(

Have you been reading Marvel comics in the last 10 years?  They have been changing the status quo on a fairly regular basis.

Nice to see I got the ball rolling.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (2004)

This was a really great game. Solid mechanics, good pacing, nice level design, excellent writing and a great cast.

I also think this would be a perfect game for someone to adapt for Oculus Rift support.

Up next is Assault on Dark Athena, let's see how that goes...

I played Butcher Bay on old Xbox, and really liked it.  I bought a PC version to loan to my PS/PC friend, and he never played it and never gave it back.  :(

I bought it a 3rd time with Dark Athena on 360 and played it a 2nd time.  They changed a bit in the middle, and I think I prefered it the way it was (mech segment)... but I will agree that it is an awesome game and a lot of fun.  I further agree that it would be a good match for the Rift.

Dark Athena was a decent expansion pack... but didn't seem to improve on Butcher in any meaningful way.  It was simply more game in a different setting.  Which was fine, but nothing to celebrate, in my opinion.

I've been reading Superior Spider-Man.  I thought it would suck, but it's actually been quite good.  Spoilers way below.*

I'm also caught up enough to read Age of Ultron.  So far, so good.

Peter Parker is alive and well as a ghost in the back of Spider-Man's brain.  This keeps Peter in it enough that I'm happy.  And patiently awaiting his return.  I dig that this is a maxi-series with no prescribed length and that they'll end it once it's run its course, and that it could have some lasting effects on the status quo.

System Shock 2 is now on Steam for Windows and Mac, I plan on getting it and beating it sometime, but I haven't felt like spending the money lately. Maybe it will go cheap in the next big Steam sale (it's only $10 now, I think).

For those who like cheap games and Steam... and went camping during the Steam Summer Sale, or something equally ridiculous...

Anyways- you can get pretty good deals from this thread on CAG:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/307615-steam-group-buy-and-gift-requests-thread-v2-read-rules-before-posting/page-226

There's a ratings system, so you can see if they're good traders.  I've made maybe 10 purchases from these guys and have yet to get burned.

A lot of the going rates at maybe Steam Summer Sale price +10%.  Sometimes it's even less than that.

Also, on the deals front: if you're a PC gamer and haven't checked out the EA Humble Bundle, on sale now, then you're dumb.

And... we're back.  Here's a bone from the Bioshock tread:

I've been []playing [] on PC- []  I've alternated betwixt mouse, xbox controller, and laptop touchpad.  It's a lot easier to hit the [targets] with the mouse than the other two...  that does make [the enemies] easier to take out.

When I was a PC gamer I always played on my laptop and never mucked around with attaching an external mouse, so I got really good with WASD and touchpad controls for shooters, which most people say is the worst possible combo ever. Maybe that is why I appreciate game controllers so much, they are just much more simple than a touchpad and I haven't used an actual mouse for gaming since I was 13.

So... the Xbox was the first console I ever owned.  I played my share of Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis, etc... at relatives' and friends' houses, but I was always a PC gamer.  Upon reaching 'adulthood' and not having the time/money to keep a killer gaming PC going, I switched to Xbox and have been pretty happy with the decision.  As the the Xbox 360 grew long in the tooth, and I was looking for more customization options than consoles typically offer, I've been dabbling in returning to my PC roots.

A lot of PC gamers find console controllers to be, at best, a huge barrier for entry and, at worst, an unacceptable step back in control fidelity.  I got over the learning curve some time ago, and really enjoy controllers, but will admit that the mouse is a much better aiming device.

However, the keyboard still sucks.

I played a bit of Walking Dead on Xbox, and then ended up with the full game on PC through one of the humble bundle deals.  I was playing it with touchpad/keyboard, and found the keyboard controls to be quite terrible.  Fortunately, you can play with a controller- even the 360 controller if you like, but goodness the keyboard!

When there are multiple actions to take on an item on the screen, they will appear numbered in the lower corner.  Whatever is action 1 (look at, probably) will default unless you press another number.  A click with the mouse will cause the currently selected action to take place on the currently indicated object.  If you select action #2, and then move the cursor briefly off of the object and then back to it, action #1 will be selected by default.

Whereas the 360 controller assigns different buttons to the actions and the user just presses the button corresponding to the action they want when the cursor is over the item.

Similarly, I've been messing with Bioshock Infinite, Bioshock 2, Borderlands 2, System Shock 2, Deus Ex: HR... and maybe one or two others.

Maybe I'm just a wimp, but keeping track of c for crouch, r for reload, e for use, v for melee, z for iron sights, etc... seems like a lot of work.  When I left PC gaming, there weren't so many keys for the standard shooter.  I think the convenience of controllers is what made those actions standard... and the PC market offers those same actions on the keyboard, but it's not exactly a good fit for that control scheme.

I used to play space sims on PC, and they had a lot of buttons... but this is a walking/shooting simulator... so the complexity to me seems odd.

I've seen some funky controllers that try to replace the keyboard:

My first reaction is "that's really stupid" but my second reaction is "Can it be any worse than the keyboard?"

That's all, I guess.

I know some people are really into finding a direct counterpart for every character, but I don't think there necessarily has to be.

Yeah... I think the game itself started it.  There's always a girl, always a lighthouse.  Plasmids/vigors... Comstock/Ryan.  It was on the surface, but the game narrative made it part of the lore.

It's actually always a man, lighthouse, and city. Elizabeth is a variable.

Darn, I knew they way I had it was slightly off.

<snip>

Just so you know, I read and enjoyed the remainder of you post.  I didn't have anything terribly specific comments , so I didn't.

I could spend my time feeling really disappointed that it isn't what it could have been, and it's not. But what it is, even in not being what it could have been, is so much more than what everything else is.

I think we're pretty much in agreement here.  It is a cut above most other games... though I think it is a step back from Rapture in several ways.  I think they ultimately didn't make the game they had wanted to, and I'm disappointed I didn't get to play that game... but at the end of the day the game I played was flippin' fantastic.

I'd actually kind of like to see System Shock rebooted and tied into the Bioshock universe.

How do you see that happening?  I, shamefully, haven't played all of System Shock 1 or 2, but I have put a couple hours into each.  I plan on finishing 2, so perhaps I don't want you to go into details yet.

Also, the 'weak minded' who were gifted their rating by the jedi mink tricking reviewers who gave it a 94%, probably haven't come up with their own opinion.

With games like Uncharted 3, Assassins Creed: Flavor of the Week, and Call of Duty IX getting 90% or above, is it really fair to say that reviewers who gave Infinite high scores are being Jedi mind tricked?

1. I said the reviewers were jedi mink* mind tricking, not jedi mind tricked.  It's the herd mentality amongst gamers, established in part by the reviewers, about the which I am complaining.  If a game gets good reviews, it is good- who needs to make one's own opinion on such things?!?  However, your complaint seems to be that they are giving less deserving games 90+ scores...  perhaps the reviewers are often tricked as well.

2. Have you been playing Assassin's Creed?  That is one of my favourite series this generation.  I have III on the shelf just waiting for its turn to get played.

xhonzi:

It reminds me of something... where they introduce a new spin on a beloved favourite... it's not well received, and they instantly return to the old formula.  Can't put my finger on it.

Perhaps the one I had on the tip of my brain was actually Prince of Persia- they took a big leap in new direction with PoP (2008)... the reaction was mixed.  And the next installment was a midquel in the Sands of Time setting.

*I was going to give you crap for 'sells figures'.  Since you didn't give me crap for 'jedi mink trick', I guess it's good I didn't.  :)

Not as bad as the Brosnan films, but still not as good as the 1962-1989 era. Watching the two films back to back made QoS a bit more interesting.

I'd like to see a fan edit of CR and QoS that puts the last 30 minutes of CR in as the first 30 minutes of QoS.  Both would be about 2 hrs then... and you wouldn't have to keep track of 'that guy in Bond's trunk' between sequels.

GI Joe 2. What is up with the Rock? he is freaking huge. he is literally twice the man he used to be.

Joss Whedon should have put him in a Ruffalo wig and cast him as the Hulk. That said, I feel like his acting has improved a great deal over the years.

mindless fun. 2 balls.

the rock hulk costume

I'd ask where you found that but I don't think I want to know. Can we forward this on to Joss Whedon?

Dwayne "i Gur" Xhonson and I have several things in common:

1. Last names start with "Xhon"

2. Hulk for Halloween in 2012

3.... okay maybe it was just two

Of course, my Hulk costume was full of fake muscles.  :(
