There is also another thing that could improve quality; the "phase inversion trick" (more info here); the results are astonishing:

http://s22.postimg.org/vm22a3rn3/picture_5_X.png

actually it's really a trick; third image used two consecutive frames, but it gives you the idea; I think it could be possible to implement it in the software... maybe...

If I capture using my s315 and the ati theater750pcie it gives a really decent picture actually.  It looks about as good as capturing ntsc except at scene changes where it will blend a bit if the luma is similar. The extra resolution really helps alleviate rainbowing and twinkling star fields. I'll probably end up using software decoding for these though once it's fully developed since I can fully tweak every setting instead of letting the capture card decide.

...think if you could capture them with a PAL high-end laserdisc player, as good as HLD-X0! That's why is really probable that software decoding will be even better!

I'm sure we are talking about Happycube's work; is there available a version that a human being could use with Windows? (^^,)

And, what's about the hardware?

The coffret trilogie did go through DVNR like the Faces set but I guess it's the best set the PAL-system can offer.

I'm pretty sure it's:

1994 No DVNR: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/31358/856235/Star-Wars:-Coffret-Trilogie:-Edition-Collector

1995 DVNR: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/35598/168035/Star-Wars:-Coffret-Trilogie

I "studied" both PAL and NTSC editions, and I discovered that the "pyramid" (can't remember if I found the name, or named it myself...) is DVNR-free, while all THX PAL has light DVNR, not even nearly to NTSC versions...

I think that if we set DVNR=0 to the "pyramid" set, and DVNR=100 for the DC (and Faces), the THX PAL versions should be set around 30 or 40, no more... there are only "traces" of it, and, with no direct comparison, one could argue there is no DVNR at all - as I did the first time I watched them...

msycamore said:

The pre-THX one might be free from DVNR but as far as I know that one used an atrociously bad master. I assume the one seen in this post...  http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Preserving-French-Original-Trilogy-ANH-V10-released-ESB-in-progress/post/577965/#TopicPost577965

...is the one you're referring to?

Yes, quality is quite low - apart the pink tint that, strangely, affects only parts of the movie, not all; maybe the only way to squeeze out more detail is the software decoder, because there are no high-end PAL laserdisc player, like HLD-X0 or X9, or even CLD-G7... the best we have is the Pioneer CLD-D925, that it's the PAL equivalent of CLD-606...

Idea: 'Man of Steel' - color fix (lots of info)
Time

Few minutes after I read this thread, I noted that the movie was programmed for this evening; watching the trailer, it seemed colors were more "alive" than the comparison video, so I decided to record it.

Apart the fact that, thanks also to following posts, I discovered the youtube video was modified, I wanted to see with my own eyes...

So, the movie, watched on an old CRT SD TV set had good, vivid colors in almost all the shots, and the few which were dull had their reasons; I compared the HDTV with the BD 2D, and they are almost the same - the small differences are probably due to TV recompression problems...

At the end, there is no reason (IMHO) to make a project, even if I must admit I was tempted just the minute I watched that youtube video; reality is the color grading is much better than many other recent movies!

So, as the old Mulder was used to say, TRUST NO 1! I add: make your homework, try to find as much proofs as you can, and then, eventually, *think* to make a project! (^^,)

If someone needs the comparison shots, I'll be happy to post them, but not now, it's too late...

Info: moviebarcode - a little idea that could help us all...
Time

A movie color grade condensed in just one image:

http://moviebarcode.tumblr.com

the first thing I thought is “nice, but useless…” -  then I found this avisynth script:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?55754-quot-Bar-code-quot-images-for-famous-movies&p=731122&viewfull=1#post731122

and wasted two minutes to download and test it… then I realized a thing…
“what if we use this for a ‘fingerprint’ of the movies we are using?”
It could be useful to make comparison between a movie with different color grading at a glance!

An example from The Arrival - top IT DVD, bottom US BD (click for larger versions):

I’m trying to find out which SDTV and HDTV versions of Star Wars are floating around the net, and to understand something more about them…

Some facts (and factoids) I found so far:

  • OUT should be not available on digital form, but eventually only recorded on VHS, Betamax or Video 2000
  • 1997 SE are available only on SDTV - PAL 720x576 25fps, don’t know if any NTSC versions are around; I recorded myself the RaiTre version - with a DVD recorder connected via a SCART RGB cable to a DTV decoder; quality is quite low, some garbage frames, cropped to 2:1, but if there is some interest I could think to upload it - screenshots of Reivax, Flunx, TB, GKar here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Max-Rebos-97-SE-superset-preservation/post/323245/#TopicPost323245
  • The Phantom Menace is available for sure in SD on the so-called “TB” version; according to this page - http://www.starwars-union.de/nachrichten/1113/StarWars_im_digitalen_Format - it was broadcasted in 2001 by German TV Premiere, in 16:9 and German 5.1 DD audio; it was also noted by a member of this forum that it was broadcasted by Austrian ORF1, first in SD, then in HD - no evidence of that until now
  • It seems that no Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith theatrical versions were never broadcasted - but I’ll be more than happy to discover the opposite!
  • HDTV broadcasting valid resolutions are:
    1280x720 1280x1080 1440x1080 1440x1088 1920x1080 1920x1088
so any resolution different from those ones are necessarily re-encoded; until now, available versions use only the last two ones - even if there seems that at least one 1280x1080 version was broadcasted
  • HDTV valid video codecs are MPEG-2 and h264 (a.k.a. AVC); any other codec - like VC-1, WMV, DivX etc. are necessarily re-encoded
  • HDTV valid audio codecs are AC3, MP2, AAC; any other codec - like DTS etc. are necessarily re-encoded
  • HDTV max average video bitrate is around 19mbps; the 30+GB floating some times ago may be recorded from cable TV, or re-encoded; actually, the biggest file size, including audio track(s), is around 20GB, while some lower bitrate versions are around 10GB
  • Usually HDTV broadcast have some kind of logo but, as far as I know, it seems there is no trace in any known available versions, so it means that for some particular reason these had no logo at all, or the logo was removed, and so they should be necessarily re-encoded
  • The only “untouched” HDTV file - recorded bit-perfect from a SAT or DTV PC card - has a .ts file extension (both for MPEG2 and h264); but .mkv or .mp4 could be found - it’s possible to mux untouched video and audio streams in these container, and add also further audio and/or sub tracks
  • HDTV versions use the same masters of the 2004 DVD SE; so, they are NOT the same versions found on BD - EXCEPT for the new WOWOW recordings
  • Video quality could range from fair to good, but not as good as the BD - due to lower HDTV bitrate; but the BD is DVNR’d so some shots/scenes could be better on HDTV than BD
  • Usually BD has a bigger frame size, while sometime the opposite is true:
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/99096
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/90179
  • HDTV may have different cropping and color grading:
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123357
  • Some versions may have glitches, some not (note the trousers):
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123360
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123361
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123362
  • Here you are a screenshot gallery of German Premiere HDTV original trilogy - even if the site claims pictures are from Cinemax, they are NOT, as you can see the German crawl:

Info: Star Wars laserdisc database

Of course I know both websites - Blam1 and VideoCollector - but I needed a "fast'n'dirt" site to find ALL Star Wars laserdiscs... without having (at the time) the possibility to add a search feature, I think that it's still a good thing for the user to choose how to display the titles.

@VideoCollector: I strongly hope you'll find some (a lot of, really) time and patience to add all the pictures of the missing titles to your laserdisc section!

Which Laserdisc set is better? The 1993 set, or the 1995 THX ones? I heard the 95 ones are merely the 93 discs in different packaging. But I also heard they did some minor improvements as with the 95 'Faces' VHS set. Cant verify which is true.

From my own post (found here):

  1. DVNR-free + no white clipping - NTSC Japan Special Collection, NTSC US Special Widescreen Edition, PAL french "pyramid" boxset, PAL german Silver Screen edition (some with the "incredible shrinking ratio" problem)
  2. Light DVNR + white clipping - PAL french THX subtitles, PAL french THX dubbed, PAL german THX, PAL spanish THX
  3. Strong DVNR + white clipping - NTSC US and Japan Definitive Collection, NTSC US "faces", NTSC Japan Collector's Set - also GOUT PAL and NTSC DVDs of course...
