Thanks, but 71977 is Greeda.
She hasn't any before/after frames from which to extract detail; hence my wink-face.

So, at the end, Greeda is Greedo's wife, right? (^^,)

Here you are the screenshot:

Seems you're not GOUT-sync'ed ?
Does your STAR WARS title card appear in frame 689 ?

Yep, it seems so... thanks for that, now I'm "689 frame"-sync'd!

Great work, both of you! In some scenes I prefer SRv5, in some LaserDisc Master's work.

@ Laserdisc Master

Do you plan to release a version with your MagicUp?

Don't know... for sure, I'll use it for other projects! But, who knows... (^^,)

That de-aliasing looks great! However, the grain plate looks like it's creating a bigger problem than what it's fixing. (Not to go much off-topic here, but it's how film reacts to light's photon properties not being replicated by universally applied grain.)

The grain applied is from real 35mm, and, even if I agree that in a screenshot it seems quite "off", when watched in motion it helps a lot to improve perceived details... of course, I could always decide to NOT use it, but with every movie I tried, the grain plate works better than the degrained ("polished") version; at least, the problem is to decide which grain to use - less or more fine.

Latest test est! (^^,)

MagicUpSR3 + BasiClean + GrainPlate Vs MagicUpSR3 refined + GrainPlate:

I don't think I could do better than this with actual techniques... unless someone could port/convert some new ones to avisynth, like:

http://www.wisdom.weizmann.ac.il/~vision/SingleImageSR.html

or the one previously posted by happycube

Thanks!

Here you are my latest test; I refined further the MagicUp upscale, using Super Resolution technique alone, with a more precise math calculation; result was a bit too rough for my tastes, so I added the BasiClean denoiser after that, plus the grain plate, that helps a bit...

MagicUpSR2 Vs MagicUpSR3 + BasiClean + GrainPlate:

now there are more details, but more aliasing as well... nevertheless, a huge improvement over the "basic" bicubic resize:

I'm in the US so PAL isn't really available to me, but I do have some good PAL RF samples and every so often I make some progress on PAL stuff.  I think I'll look at it more this next week(end).

That's great!

Perhaps... I pretty much only use Linux, so can any of the scripts you or Dre use be ported to Vapoursynth?

Don't think so... maybe you could port that technique to AviSynth... (-^,)

Think to this technique used with your laserdisc capture workflow...

Oh I have been... :)  (If this can make the GOUT look this nice, imagine how JSC might look!)

Yep! Also, consider the various PAL versions... they are good, but because PAL players are not high-end, your invention could squeeze a lot more quality from them!

I'll probably look at http://mentat.za.net/supreme/ this weekend, which is BSD-licensed.  There are some single-frame and neural network techniques that sound interesting as well.

I was aware of this, but not able to use it... if this technique could mantain the promises as seen in the pictures, it could be the real winning one!

Could you show what your method would do with the soldiers face in the following screenshot I posted before for super resolution v4? I'm curious how it would handle the facial texture, and the lack of smooth shapes.

Thanks DrDre! As I wrote before, this thread gave me several ideas to improve the quality of my upscale filter; test clip will be ready soon - which shot would you like to see? Frame numbers will help a lot!

About HDTV: yes, it's the 2004 version, as I'm pretty sure there was no HDTV broadcast of 1997 SE, but only DTV...

Got the NTSC DVD of EP4 as source; lot better than PAL DVD (and also a bit more image on the sides); for my latest test, I cleaned up the source, upscaled it with two different upscale filtes - one called MagicUpPlus, the other called MagicUpSR, based on SuperResolution technique - and merged both 50/50; left the grain plate out this time.

SuperResolution V3 Noise Reduction Vs BasiClean + MagicUp merge (Plus & SR):

Can't say which is the best, because one has something better than the other and vice versa, so I decided to put each against the HD version - taken from HDTV, cropped and resized - note that the images don't match, but this is beyond the scope of the comparison...

Now, it's you turn... pick your poison! (^^,)

Info: The strange case of "Split Second"
Time

“Split Second”, a 1992 film with Rutger Hauer, is now out on BD in Germany; finally, it’s possible to have this movie with the right color grading… or not?

Strangely, when it was out on DVD, it had AT LEAST six (yes, six!) version with different color grading (and cropping, too)… but, which is the right one - between those and the new one on BD?

Here you are the six comparison with BD on the left, and on the right:

Dutch (with burnt subtitles):

French:

German (it exists also in 4:3):

Italian:

US:

What do you think?

Sadly EP IV and V on PAL DVD are worst than NTSC, while strangely EP VI is better... oh Lucas, you did everything you can to let people think GOUT was the worst version ever made... "Look dad, EP IV and V are very good, but EP VI is bad..." while in UK: "Father, even if EP IV and V are very bad, at least EP VI is good..." (^^,)

Waiting to receive a small NTSC sample composed of the same frames (more or less) of the PAL I used - they were 11520-11540, NTSC should differ by one or two frames IIRC...

Thanks for the sample!

Here you are the comparisons:

Spline64Resize + GrainPlate2 Vs SuperResolution V3
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/121903

MagicUpPlus + GrainPlate2 clip
https://www.sendspace.com/file/u5xjzb

my thoughts: despite the fact SuperResolution V3 is (obviously) cleaner than "classic" upscale filters, it relies on artifacts... indeed, you could see that it distorts some shapes (eyes, last teeth etc); MagicUpPlus increments details while maintaining shapes... I added a grain plate to give the impression of further details.

Said that, I must thank you, because this thread inspired me to find new ways to further refine my own filter, as you can see here:
