Star Wars: A New Hope [OUT ruLes 2.0] - AVCHD & BD RELEASED!
Time

WARNING! to everyone who's downloading OUT 2.0:

I have uploaded the BD version instead AVCHD... so, if you will try to burn it onto a DVD9, IT WON'T FIT!!!

Solutions:

when downloaded, demux the 00000.m2ts file with TSMuxeR and remux the resulting tracks without two audio soundtracks, to fit a DVD9

or

burn it on a BD-R

Sorry, it was the rush to release it before Easter...

You_Too said:

Yeah, SET looks good too, but OUT is less cropped. They were from different sources, right?

Yes, I know SET is like a "zoomed" version of OUT...

Anyway, comparing those shots I can see why I think there is some misalignment in OUT. And I think it's horizontal.

Check this upscaled closeup of one of those "poles" in the background, SET on left and OUT on right:

See how the contours are sharp in SET and are like "doubled" and blurry in OUT?

Maybe you are right, I must check the alignment of this scene.

Or maybe is due to the higher resolution/quality of the original SET?

And this is not criticizm by the way, I'm only trying to help!

Your help is very welcome! An experienced user could notice things (like this) that a novice like me could not.

Looks pretty good for a Laserdisc project!

Thank you very much! We are on the same wavelenght... (^^',)

I think "How long have you had these droids?" looks a bit watercolor-ish though. Maybe that scene didn't align perfectly between the sources?

I carefully checked all the alignment of the whole movie for the four laserdisc captures, at least three times, so I'm quite sure the alignment is right... those scene colors are the same also in the original, single laserdisc captures, so it could be a master problem - it looks similar also in SET

vs OUT:

yes, I know SET is still pinkish in comparison with OUT, but seen alone it doesn't seem so bad!

Time

_,,,^..^,,,_ presents the [OUT ruLes] project

Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions

Project mission: restore the Original Unaltered Trilogy using audio and video from various Laserdisc editions.

Video sources: analog video captured directly from Laserdiscs; other analog sources are admitted (VHS, CED, VHD, Beta etc.) only if the material is not present on the Laserdisc format.

Audio sources: analog audio and uncompressed PCM captured directly from Laserdiscs; other analog sources are admitted (like VHS, vynil etc.) only if the material is not present on the Laserdisc format.

Subtitles sources: literal subtitles for all languages.

Project prohibition: use DVD, BD, HDTV or other audio or video from any digital sources.

Episode IV - Star Wars: A New Hope [OUT ruLes 2.0] (improved version of OUT 1.0)

Source Material

Video: THX PAL laserdiscs

Audio: THX PAL laserdiscs

  • Star Wars - Guerre Stellari - VHS HiFi Stereo - Italian

  • PC Sony Vaio Core 2 Duo e6300 dual core 1.86GHz, 3GB RAM, 1TB external HD only for Star Wars; video card AverMedia A16C with Philips SAA713x chipset
  • Panasonic S-VHS recorder NV-FS88B
  • Sony MiniDisc recorder MDS-J520E

Software:

  • VirtualDub as capture software
  • VirtualDub and AviSynth for video manipulation
  • TsMuxeR for muxing audio, video and subtitles
  • AviSynth+SoundOut for audio manipulation

Settings:

  • video captured at video capture card native resolution 720x576, YUV, HuffYUV lossless compression
  • digital audio from Laserdisc via S/PDIF bit-to-bit perfect 16bit 44,1KHz 1441kbps PCM stereo
  • analog audio from VHS converted with the MiniDisc A/D converter 20bit Sigma-Delta modulation and then via S/PDIF perfect 16bit 44,1KHz 1441kbps PCM stereo to PC

Project Status: RELEASED

Captures: all done

After many tests, I decided to use only the Pioneer CLD-D925 as its video quality (resolution, noise, drop outs) is better than the others; the connection used is S-Video, as the laserdisc player comb filter is better than the capture card's.

Video treatment: all laserdisc video captures were time and space aligned, then with AviSynth median and average scripts were overlayed to eliminate some noise and put out unwanted video parts (as burned subtitles); little noise reduction and sharpen; NO COLOR CORRECTION at all! Upconversion from PAL 720x576 4:3 to 1280x720 16:9.

Video tracks:

  • the original video format is 720x576@25fps 2.35:1 letterbox PAL, with a video resolution of visible image around 700x340, captured using the HuffYUV lossless codec; video is upconverted to 1280x544@23.976fps 2.35:1 as source, inside a 1280x720pixel 16:9 frame, using x264 codec and compressed at 7000kbps.

Audio treatment: all digital and analog audio captured are converted from PCM 2.0 1441kbps 44KHz to Dolby Digital AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround encoded 384kbps 48KHz; 70mm and mono soundtracks are left untouched, apart some cuts to be in sync with the video.

AVCHD audio tracks:

  • english soundtrack from french PAL THX laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz
  • german soundtrack from german PAL THX laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz
  • spanish soundtrack from spanish PAL THX laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz
  • french soundtrack from PAL "pyramid" laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded(?) 384kbps 48KHz
  • italian soundtrack from italian PAL VHS HiFi Stereo, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz

BD audio tracks:

  • Hairy_Hen 70mm english soundtrack recreation, AC3 5.1 448kbps 48KHz
  • Belbucus mono english soundtrack recreation, AC3 1.0 192kbps 48KHz
  • english soundtrack from french PAL THX laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz
  • german soundtrack from german PAL THX laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz
  • spanish soundtrack from spanish PAL THX laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz
  • french soundtrack from PAL "pyramid" laserdisc, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded(?) 384kbps 48KHz
  • italian soundtrack from italian PAL VHS HiFi Stereo, AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround Encoded 384kbps 48KHz

Subtitles: all done; english was taken from Project Threepio, the others were based on GOUT DVD subs and then corrected to be literal.

Subtitles tracks:

  • english full 100% literal - from threepio project
  • english forced 100% literal - from threepio project
  • french full 100% literal - translated by marvins
  • french forced 100% literal - translated by marvins
  • german full 100% literal - translated by spielt mit
  • german forced 100% literal - translated by spielt mit
  • italian full 100% literal - adapted by me from the italian script
  • italian forced 100% literal - adapted by me from the italian script
  • spanish full 30% literal - transcription attempted by me
  • spanish forced - actually from threepio project

Conversion from 25p to 23.976p: done with TsMuxeR

Final formats:

  • AVCHD folder, 720p/23.976fps with five audio tracks and ten subtitles (five forced and five full)
  • BD folder, 720p/23.976fps with seven audio tracks and ten subtitles (five forced and five full)

Actually AVCHD and BD are both available on myspleen.

ATTENTION: to view the AVCHD version of SW:ANH [OUT ruLes 2.0] correctly, it should be burned onto a DVD9 or BD-R, and played on a stand-alone BD player or a Playstation 3! - To view the BD version of SW:ANH [SET ruLes 1.0] correctly, it should be burned onto a BD-R, and played on a stand-alone BD player or a Playstation 3!

Jobs to do for the next version:

  • finish and correct spanish literal subtitles
  • adding eventual subtitles in other languages
  • adding commentary track in english from DC LD
  • adding commentary track in japanese from DC LD
  • correct eventual video, audio, subs errors

To do later:

  • make the AVCHD/BD/DVD discs (menus, audio and sub tracks etc.)
  • do more captures using different players

IMPROVEMENTS OVER Star Wars: A New Hope [OUT ruLes 1.0]:

  • a bit more saturation than OUT 1.0 - NO color correction was applied
  • the new sharpen/denoise script is less aggressive than the old one
  • a proper color matrix is used this time for the final release (TV.709)
  • proper levels used; PC -> TV, from captures to release
  • a re-recorded italian soundtrack - with proper hi-fi quality
  • completely redone sountracks, 2.0 Dolby Surround encoded @384kbps
  • Hairy_Hen 70mm 5.1 soundtrack @448kbps
  • Belbucus Mono soundtrack @192kbps
  • french soundtrack taken from "pyramid" laserdisc
  • 100% literal french and german subtitles, 30% literal spanish subtitles
  • 8 half-dark frames between reels change restored
  • proper file size of the AVCHD folder to fit into a DVD9

CREDITS:

  • Hairy_Hen for his 70mm soundtrack recreation
  • Belbucu for his mono soundtrack recreation
  • CapableMetal for help in synchronization of the previous soundtracks

  • ...if I forgot someone, please let me know!

Self comments: I know there are many better quality projects around, but all are made using digital altered trilogies, "despecialized"... kudos to all the project maker, for their really good job and long hard work!

I'm not so good as they are, and also my spare time is limited; also, the overall video quality of my project is lower than all the HD projects; but there are some positive things: more image quality coherence (because the video sources are all the same); better colors than GOUT - despite the fact I made NO COLOR CORRECTION (and I'd like to leave it as is, to not lose further quality); better audio quality than GOUT; a certain video "analogness" - read: poor quality ;-)

I decided to start a new thread as I think there are many improvements, some deep, that set OUT 2.0 apart from its predecessor.

Yesterday, I checked the french audio of the OUT vs GOUT. The OUT audiotrack has absolutely no dynamic and the voices are too low.

I don't know if thats come from how you capture the audio or if thats so in the THX pressing, but there is someting wrong with this soundtrack.

I captured all the laserdisc soundtracks, including the french one, via the digital optical out of the laserdisc player to the optical in of my PC, bit-for-bit perfect; so maybe the volume onto the laserdisc french soundtrack was set too low, or the GOUT DVD has risen a bit - don't know about the dynamic issue...

But, at the end, [ruLes] means "restored using Laserdisc editions", so I will not use the GOUT soundtracks anyway... BUT I could use the pyramid soundtrack, if it's better than the THX LD I used!

The master used for the Gold Edition and the Pyramid Edition is the same.

The only difference is that the Pyramid has a better pressing (less video noise and drops.)

Less video noise and drops?!? I can't imagine how low the quality of the Gold Edition would be, though...

The only advantage on the Gold and Pyramid Edition is the audio which is better than the THX audio.

Can you explain the differences? Are the differences subtle, or substantial? Should I use pyramid's soundtrack instead THX's for my OUT project?

I too have the pyramide LD box. For me it's the same as the first gold LD release that I scanned. Do you think it's different ?

Not 100%, but if about half of the scenes are pinkish, video quality is lacking, burn marks are present at scene change, and a lot of drop-outs, dirt and other annoying little obstrusive objects are floating around the screen for the whole movie, I think that they share the same master...

Someone need the "pyramid" LD french intro?!?

Quality is really low, stars are almost all disappeared, titles color is not yellow but orange (OO!)

...but if someone is still interested, here you are - untouched, only encoded with x264 at 2000kbps:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/j9xnje

(an uncompressed version is near 800MB - to me, it's useless, because of the very low quality of the source... neverthless, let me know if it is needed and I'll upload it)

There are 2 more new scenes in the 2004 SE I wrote the text for the subtitles for. But only plain text for now. In case someone want to use it

As SET has the same dialog lines for the two additional scenes (Jabba and Biggs) I will use it for it.

- I will check to get the Subtitle Editor running to check all subtitles so they fit for sure. I need to set the time codes for the missing entries.

Give also Subtitle Workshop a try.

- The subtitles are writen in a newer grammar which was not effective 1977. If you do not oppose I would like to keep the original grammar.

I agree 100% with you... this is the spirit of my Amanuenses project... I mean, when in 1977 the staff in charge for italian soundtrack decided to call R2-D2 as C1-P8, why we want to forget it? As this very soundtrack is present also on GOUT, why don't make literal subtitles following it? The same should be done, IMHO, for the other languages.

- Any other things to do?

I don't think so for now. But if you have the time and the spirit to do the same for TESB and ROTJ... (^^,)

In general it was strange how certain things were changed, while other kept the original dialog.
This seems not only because of ease of reading or space management.

The same happened with the italian soundtrack and, reading the french subs done by marvins, for the french sountrack too, and I could confirm that is the same for the spanish soundtrack, that I *attempted* to *try* to fix...

Thank you for motivating me to do this. Loved it! Had two times tears in my eyes as I did not see it for quite a long time...

Again, thank to YOU for the effort and the speed you have done this hard task!

  • Leonardo, that pushed me to start this project
  • all the members who help me with my projects

NOTES

Leonardo contacted me, and asked if I could do an italian version of OUT; I was thinking about it long time ago, so I decided to do it, for him and for me, my family and my friends.

The video quality is the same of OUT 2.0 (that will be released soon), except the initial part, that is taken from VHS… I used the same denoise settings for both video parts, but maybe I must apply a more aggressive noise reduction for the VHS part!

I must admit I cheated a bit, because I used the 1997 S.E. italian crawl, but it was the only choice, as the OT italian crawl was totally different…

Could you forgive me?

The only other little thing that bothers me is the fact that the forced subtitles should be manually selected; I set hardcoded subtitles with avisynth, but for some strange reason, they were not there when previewed with virtual dub, and disappeared when I watched the final release… so, as more than two days was necessary for the conversion, I decided to leave them “as is”, sorry…

Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...
Time

FreaQ, I solved the mystery...

Take a look at this post: "On my discs, Making of SW and SP FX were taken from Rikter's laserdisc captures and Star Wars to Jedi & Classic Creatures were taken from my own official VHS releases."

Here you are! I don't know if there are any other "From Star Wars to Jedi" version on other project than RowMan's, but his one is from VHS... so, it is explained why (apart the obvious green line that clearly is not part of the capture) the picture size is different; the video quality and the color resolution are lower and the details are worst...

Also, are there around other Classic Creatures preservations? EditDroid is taken from the same RowMan's material (VHS)? Or from a laserdisc? And, if from LD, is the last version used (the one with the digital soundtrack) or the old one?

Every day I discover something new (thanks to all of this forum members), and this project seems near its beginning... still, I need someone (or more than one) who would help me with the dialog transcription of the supplemental materials!

Info: AMANUENSES project

CatBus, thanks for your support!

I've started this project because there are other users who are interested in literal subtitles...

Is it a well known fact that Star Wars characters' names are sometimes changed in other languages dub, and italian is not different... I KNOW that they are wrong now, buy as I was grown up with those names, it's fun to hear them and read them in the literal subtitles... call it "nostalgia"! (^^,)

Let's see some differences between english and italian subtitles - which one is the literal, and which one is not? (only ONE character's name was changed, to not discover which one is literal)

Info: AMANUENSES project
Time

spoRv presents the AMANUENSES project…

Definitions of amanuensis: a person employed to write or type what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another. Amanuenses is plural, and defines all the persons who will be involved in this project

Project mission: transcript different languages dialogs (or written essays, scripts etc.) to plain text files, to be used for literal subtitles and as base for translations. It must be verbatim (word for word), done preferably by native language persons.

Sources: any Star Wars related - firstly the Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy; then all the extra materials that often are released only in english; could be audio-video (as movies, supplemental materials etc.), audio or written text.

Methods: usually the work will be done by hand, from scratch, listening to the dialogs or reading the text, then type the transcription; could be also based onto a previous work - like a standard subtitle file, or produced using other methods (OCR, speech-to-text); the most important thing is that the final work should be CHECKED by a human person.

Releases: all the released files must be plain text; could be only simple transcription, or other kind of files - like .srt subtitles; when files other than plain text are used, you should mention for which version is suitable. They will be release here:

http://amanuenses.pastebay.com

There are other free text hosting, but this one has more than 50,000 characters limit (actually 65,635), no ads, and we could use a free subdomain for this project…

I want to…

  • post my content

Before all, read the simple posting rules - including a simple FAQ; then go to http://amanuenses.pastebay.com and post it there! Don’t forget to add it to the RELEASED CONTENT post! Of course, you could always post your comments and URL here.

  • revise someone else’s content

Go to http://amanuenses.pastebay.com, take your content, change/adapt/revise it accordingly to your project, and post your new content in the same place. Don’t forget to add it to the RELEASED CONTENT post, with credit to the original poster.

  • use someone else’s content

Go to http://amanuenses.pastebay.com and take what you need. It will be great if you visit the USED CONTENT post, and write the URL of the project or web page where the content is used, along with some comments.

  • find help for my project

Post your request here; if someone could and would help you, he/she could post here, and post the released content on http://amanuenses.pastebay.com.

<span style=“text-decoration: underline;”>this project is open to everyone: you could help by trascribe a dialog in your language, and you could use the transcription done for your own project; don’t forget to give credit to everyone who deserve it!</span>

I decided to start this project after I worked with my OUT [ruLes] version; when I watched it properly, relaxed on the couch with my family, checking the italian subtitles, we all noted how far from the dialogs the subs are… they were only mere translations of the english subs!

A casual viewer can live with it, but I can’t! Then I decided to do literal subtitles; it could be useful to someone who wants to learn my language, or just have fun to read how a foreign word/phrase is written. Maybe it’s not top priority, but to me it deserves to be done!

At the moment, I’ve done the transcription of the italian soundtracks, both OUT and SET; marvins as almost finished the OUT french subtitles, and spielt mit is willing to do the same with the german subtitles…

This forum is great… I found here a lot of people who helped me with my projects; I hope this project will help someone else in exchange!

Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...

The PAL version seems kind of dark and vertically stretched.

it's not vertically stretched... the screenshots are taken from the captures "as is", so the NTSC is 720x480 and the PAL is 720x576... so they "seems" vertically stretched, but they are not... I didn't resize them to show the original quality.

You can't even see the starfield behind the titles.

I don't know if it's because the lower (too low, by the way) black level, or due to the fact they insert the french subtitles...

The framerate is not "incorrect", it's just a differently made NTSC > PAL transfer :-)

Would PAL VHS tapes help you in any way ? I bought the Executor box set only to find out that my VCR doesn't work anymore :-)

The Executor box set will be a wonderful source to capture! Another member is doing the same, but you know, the more, the better - median is your friend... (^^,)

Here you are some screenshots - japanese NTSC on top, french "pyramid" PAL bottom:

(white line on the left is my fault, sorry!)

Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...
Time

Here I am... let's say that today was "laserdisc extras capture day - 1"; I finished to capture both PAL and NTSC "From Star Wars to Jedi", and compared them briefly...

The conclusion is: the PAL french version has the advantage of really few and unobstrusive subtitles, while the NTSC has those big japanese subs always present. The bad news are that the video quality of the PAL is worst... bad colors, low brightness, low details, too much grain... it could be improved a bit, of course, but basically the NTSC is a lot better...

And, if only I will decide to use the PAL video, its framerate is not correct... I mean, to try to compare both PAL and NTSC, I had to change the NTSC framerate not to 25fps, but around 24fps!

So, maybe, it should be better to use only the NTSC japanese version, for the following reasons:

  • better overall video quality
  • has perfectly in-sync english soundtrack
  • framerate should be correct
  • using the japanese version, all extras will be NTSC only
  • will match the other three japanese subtitled documentaries

Opinions?
