Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...

Why don't you simply release everything on DVD ? Or even a disc of mkv files ?

Because DVD is 5/9GB, while BD is 25/50GB - so, less discs for the same content; DVD uses only MPEG2 while BD could use MPEG2, H.264 and VC1 - so, half space for the same content, or better quality for the same space... also, I released OUT and SET SW:ANH in .m2ts file to be used with AVCHD or BD, and I'd like to make a companion disc(s) for them!

Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...
Time

I'm just doing test captures with the DC documentaries; as they are shot on video, the quality is quite good also using a "simple" LD-V4300D... don't know if using the HLD-X9 will improve a lot the video quality... but I'm sure a median/average of three copies (2 US + 1 JP) will improve it.

A tough work will be to synch temporally the parts with stop frames, like photo galleries - they must be split and synchronized separately... (xx/) at least, no IVTC will be needed!

About post processing: a bit of noise reduction will be necessary - just a bit; for the upscaling, a lot of extras found on BD are SD, so they must not need to be upscaled, but... the problem will be to mix NTSC and PAL contents!

Maybe I could encode the material to MPEG2, so I could release AVCHD/BD with mixed contents, and different PAL DVDs and NTSC DVDs, without encoding twice... AFAIK, mixed content (like PAL and NTSC) may reside in the same BD disc... someone could confirm this? It's true that the PAL interviews should be the same found on NTSC, but "From Star Wars to Jedi" without subtitles are available only in PAL, so...

What is holding me back to begin this project is just that I'd like to show it to my family and friends, and not all of them understand english... what I really need to give the "green light" to this project, are the transcriptions of all the extras' dialogs in english, then I'll do myself the translation to italian - help to translate them to french, german and spanish is welcome!

I searched a lot during the last week, but didn't find them; maybe someone with huge patience and a lot of spare time could do it... (^^3)???

If the documentaries you are talking about are the following:

  • Star Wars: A New Hope: Making of: As told by C-3PO and R2-D2 (1977)
  • Star Wars: SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  • Star Wars: Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983)

I'm sorry, I have the same ones - with japanese subtitltes... but, IIRC, they are the same present onto the BD official release, so...

At least, "From Star Wars to Jedi" is missing, and I have it without japanese subtitles...

About the EditDroid: I'm sure the quality is good (also if I have not seen them), but after the OUT and SET projects, I could assure you that a median and/or average of three captures eliminates a lot of noise on video, plus using a better laserdisc player and a better capture card, the final result should be better.

Still don't know if there is enough interest in the community in releasing this kind of bonus disc, as almost all the content (apart "From Star Wars to Jedi" without japanese subtitles) is present in one or more releases...

If you encode them with X.264, you could put each episode onto a DVD-9 using the AVCHD format, as it could be played onto any recend BD player, a PC with a BD-ROM, or a PlayStation 3.

Then, as each episode will be around 8GB, you could put the same files "as is" - no need for re-encode - into a BD-25.

About taking out the black borders: if you want to leave the japanese subtitles, just cut the top black bar, and try to cut the bottom part of the bar under the subtitles...

I agree with Chewtobacca: 25mbps is too much... if I were in you, I'll try to put all the three episodes in one BD-25; as the resolution used is 720x480 pixel, I'm sure that using X.264, a 8000kbps will be more than enough to retain all the video quality of the original capture - the result file will around 8GB for each movie.

And using this bitrate, you could also put each episode onto a DVD-9, in AVCHD format, for the members who have not a BD burner, but only a BD player, or a PS3.

Just do some test conversion, for example one at 25mbps and one at 8mps, then compare them directly; I'm sure they will look the same.

Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...
Time

As I wrote in the first post, I'd like to do a disc that contains laserdisc-only extras - not available on DVD or BD... but nobody told me yet which are the LD-only ones!

I must admit I like also the idea of making a "laserdisc extra compendium", that indeed probably will take more than a single BD-25...

FreaQ said:

How would this be different from "The Ultimate Supplemental Collection" by RowMan?

I found this thread about that... I have not watched the four DVDs; reading the list of supplemental material in the first post, it seems they include all the DC extras, plus a lot more things that were not on laserdiscs... but it seems that the 1997 SE extras are not there, right?

IF, and I underline IF, I will decide to do a SW XTRAS [ruLes] using my own "method" (^^,), then I will use for NTSC material the Pioneer HLD-X9 for its superior quality, three different copies of the DC (two US and one japanese) and two copies of SE box set for median/average; I will include different language soundtracks and subtitles where available.

Using a newer (maybe better) capture card, the second best laserdisc player ever made, average/median methods, a better video codec (X.264 Vs MPEG2), a bigger media (BD25 Vs DVD5), higher bitrate for audio and video... the final result will be probably a better quality release, with less artifacts; plus, the most important thing, I will release "From Star Wars to Jedi" without japanese subtitles, and I don't think it is available elsewhere, right?

But, at the end, why someone should make all of this - that will take a lot of time and hard work - when the most part is available on BD, with higher quality? Are extras on BD "specialized" too, to worth a special preservation?

Or, simply, I could think to gather all the SW laserdisc extras, despite the fact they are available on DVD or BD, just because they are on laserdisc, and they will be a perfect companion for the OUT and SET... and, because a lot of people will be happy to have them all in a single place!

Could be a bad case of laserdisc fever?!? (LD,)

Actually, I think you are be right about the aspect. I seem to remember having the same issue after converting it to a 2.35:1 aspect after capturing my own PAL set a while back, despite the sleeve stating its at 2.35:1! Even with the black bars uncropped (left and right only) that are normally overscanned by CRT TV's, its only in the region of 2.3:1.

If OUT AR is correctly set at 2.35:1, then SET is less, as it seems like "zoomed" in comparison to OUT... when directly compared "by eye", then 2.25:1 fit better, but maybe I'm wrong, and could be everything between 2.25 and 2.35.

I don't understand how SET is anamorphically encoded though, as stated in your description of the source materials for the comparison, as it has been upscaled to 1280x720 (which isn't anamorphic) from a letterboxed source (also not anamorphic).

My fault, sorry... thought letterbox, wrote anamorphic... you know, it was late, I was tired, I'm getting old... |xX_|

No seeders on the torrent ATM, I'm going to leave my system on once its complete and help to seed it, although that could be a while as its currently only 0.1% complete. ;)

I just switched off the wrong PC... yes, I'm getting old, but they are THE SAME PC - identical - apart the inside components, so this time I must be excused... now, the PC with GKAR Vs SET is on, and will be online for the next days, to seed it as long as I can!

Awesome!  It would be great to have all of these extras in one nice little package.

Fully agree, an "all in one" disc would be excellent

Also if at SD resolution, I don't think a single BD-25 will contain'em all... should I consider to do a BD boxset with them? (^^,)

Well, the idea is to make a BD full of extras from laserdiscs, that are NOT available on DVD or BD - apart the OT and SE trailers and short interviews with George Lucas, which I'd like to put in anyway...

1280x720 is not an anamorphic resolution, and I thought the aspect is supposed to be 2.35:1?

Each version is 812x360pixel, inside a 1280x720pixel frame; the AR is as the original version, as GKAR is 704x410 anamorphic and PAL laserdiscs are 720x340; if the image AR is set to 2.35:1 and compared with OT, they are vertically squeezed, so the 2.25:1 AR seems the right one.

I'm going to download this and check it out, I'm looking to seeing how they match up.

I'm waiting for your comments.

Star Wars: A New Hope [SET ruLes 1.0] - AVCHD & BD RELEASED!
Time

I finished to capture the italian VHS videotape; tomorrow I hope to sync its soundtrack to the SET video. and I synchronized it to the video.

About subtitles: italian and english subs are almost ready; marvins is working hard to make the OUT literal french subtitles, and promised to make also the SET added dialogs; literal german and spanish ones are still not made.

So, if nobody will answer soon, I think I will release next week a SET 1.0 with english, french and italian literal full and forced subtitles, and german forced ones - that I've done reading the german burnt-in subtitles on the laserdisc - while full german and full and forced spanish ones will be the "usual" subtitles...

Meanwhile, I've done a GKAR Vs SET split screen comparison...

As now I'm a proud owner of a "brand old" computer with BD-burner, I'd like to release a BD with all the extras found on laserdisc editions (like trailers, teasers, featurettes, documentaries etc.) and still not on DVD or BD.

I'm aware there were some threads about laserdisc extras, but I'd like to have one dedicated thread instead of sparse ones, with updates right in the first post.

I know for sure that some of these extras, in particular the ones on the Definitive Collection, are present on DVD or BD, but I don't know, or I'm not sure, which ones...

Info: Star Wars: A New Hope (1997 SE) - GKAR Vs SET [ruLes] - split screen comparison
    Time

A split screen comparison between GKAR and SET [ruLes].

GKAR is a 1997 Special Edition version taken from a DVD broadcasting, and then authored to a PAL DVD; it has german crawl and alien subtitles, german and english soundtracks; video is PAL 25fps 720x576 anamorphically encoded, A.R. 2.25:1, MPEG2 encoded @~4000kbps; audio is AC3 encoded @448kbps (german 5.1, english 5.1 upmix) and @256kbps (english 2.0); no selectable subtitles.

SET [ruLes] is based on 1997 Special Edition PAL THX laserdiscs; its sources are the german, french and french with english soundtrack laserdiscs, plus italian VHS Hi-Fi Stereo soundtrack, DTS theatrical soundtrack (in future DVD and BD releases) and AC3 NTSC US laserdisc soundtrack; video is AVCHD 23.976fps, 1280x720 anamorphically encoded, A.R. 2.25:1, X.264 encoded @8000kbps; audio is AC3 encoded @384kbps (NTSC US laserdisc english soundtrack 5.1, english 2.0 DS, german 2.0 DS, italian 2.0 DS); english, german and italian full and forced subtitles.

The split screen comparison video is encoded using X.264 @3000kbps, 1280x720 23.976fps; audio is taken from the PAL french 1997 SE laserdisc, english soundtrack PCM, converted to AC3 @384kbps 2.0 Dolby Surround encoded.

In this comparison, is it possible to see the following differences:

    • the GKAR is affected by the pinkish tone, while the SET try to fix it with a moderate color correction - almost the time SET has better colors;
    • in GKAR, there are some MPEG2 artifacts due to DVB transmission and/or DVD compression, while the SET try to eliminate them using uncompressed sources and then an higher bitrate AVC compression
    • GKAR has german intro crawl and alien subtitles, while SET has english crawl and alien subtitles will be selectable - not present in this comparison
    • GKAR has slightly superior resolution, due to its digital presentation, while SET has lower resolution, due to its analog laserdisc sources - but sometimes the reverse is true!

Some details are lost, as the GKAR is taken from MPEG2 and upscaled, while SET is taken from X.264 and downscaled, but this is only a fast method to compare the two editions.

You can find it on myspleen

[OUT - ruLes] Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions - A New Hope (Released)
    Time

I began to work myself with the spanish subtitles, because they are not literal as I suspected... I left the correct lines as they are, trying to transcribe the dialogs as best as I can, but, despite the fact that spanish is similar to italian, is not easy for me...

If there is some spanish speaking user who has some spare time to dedicate to this project... I checked roughly 30% of the spanish subtitles; this is what must be done:

    • check if the remaining lines are literal
    • if they are not literal, listen to the spanish audio and transcribe it
    • read the fixes I've done and correct them (all accents are not there!)

tools needed : "Star Wars: A New Hope" with spanish soundtrack (my OUT 1.0 could be used, too); a computer, a simple notepad or spreadsheet software; a lot of patience!

Also, the german subtitles need to be fixed, too. This time I don't dare to do anything with it; a german speaking user that would like to help with it, must do everything, sorry...

Audio in english DTS, AC3 (from NTSC laserdisc AC3 soundtrack and from PAL laserdisc PCM soundtrack) and german AC3 is ready; I'm going to capture the italian soundtrack in the next days.

Subtitles are not ready at all... I must work on them.

I plan to release the .m2ts file really soon, because the video - the hard part - is done. Stay tuned!

Star Wars: A New Hope [SET ruLes 1.0] - AVCHD & BD RELEASED!
    Time

    COLOR CORRECTION UPDATE:

I tested thoroughly the color correction settings I described in this thread, and, despite the fact that "whites were whiter than white", I was not totally happy with them, because that little part of autowhite I used in my avisynth script resulted in several color artifacts... so, I decided to restart from the very beginning!

After a LOT of hours spent comparing the original SE laserdisc captures, GKAR, color corrected laserdisc captures and OUT, I understood that, if I want a perfect 1997 SE color correction - with colors as similar as possible to the original trilogy - I must color correct the whole movie scene by scene (sometimes frame by frame) with different, tailored for the scene/frame settings...

Because to obtain a color corrected scene I must work for several hours, I calculated that if I want (and don't count I could not be sure to be able to do it) color correct the 1997 SE near the perfection, I will release my SET in some years... that is because I have a family, a job, a life outside this project - you know, my cats want to be cuddled, feeded and adulated several times each day (><,) - and luckily in the last weeks my family decided to let me alone on the front of the screen during my "project days"... so, with so little free time to improve the SET colors, and the fact that I'd like to release it ASAP, a decision must be taken...

Following my new restoration philosophy, "less is more", I decided to do subtle but more correct color corrections... yes, with the old (and with inbetween) script, the whites were whiter, but the rest of the picture often was greener too... and the colors were too "different" from the original, sometimes looked artifacted, other times like "painted"...

At the end, I achieved a good result using two settings, one for the whole movie apart the Mos Eisley scenes, where I used the other, a bit more "aggressive" for that very pinkish scenes... it's true that some pinkish tones are still visible in white parts of few scenes, but the results, compared to GKAR for example, are quite good - IMHO, of course...

As usual, GKAR is not resized or processed; SET is taken from the finished file, and then resized to match GKAR.

    AUDIO UPDATE:

CapableMetal, with all his effort, was really helpful with audio soundtracks: he sync'd the DTS theatrical soundtrack to SET, and sync'd the NTSC AC3 soundtrack too. I tested them both, and the sync is perfect! Thanks a lot, CapableMetal!

As AVCHD format does not allow DTS, I will include only the NTSC AC3 original soundtrack, plus the english and german soundtracks from the PAL laserdiscs and the italian soundtrack from VHS (still to capture it); could still release an MKV with DTS soundtrack, for those who doesn't care to play an AVCHD on their BD player or PS3.

Following these, I will release a BD-25 with both OUT and SET - this time with the DTS soundtrack; maybe an interview to GL for the SE and some trailers will be appreciated... I also thought to add a bonus version, as a four quarters split screen... top left GOUT, top right OUT, bottom left GKAR, bottom right SET - what do you think?

Any comment - as always - is highly appreciated! Thanks to your comments, I learned a lot of things!

I think my eyes just aren't trained to catch it perhaps.  I thought I'd found an instance where I noticed it during the closeup of the binary suns but it's that way on my usb stick capture as well lol.

Maybe because is not caused by AGC, but it's in the master...

So, it could be possible that, speaking about the HD 750, there are two firmware revisions (or two different hardware) around, one with AGC problem (AntcuFaalb's) and one without (althor1138's)...

Or - just my personal thought - this problem shows up only with VHS (with or without macrovision), because VHS has not (apart some hi-end S-VHS recorder) TBC, while laserdisc has it?!?

And, *maybe*, other 750 based cards (like Asus) are not affected by this AGC problem...

Any other HD 750 users could prove this AGC problem - or the absence of it?

    High-End audio capture cards
    Time

After the High-End video capture cards thread, here you are another one, this time about their audio counterparts.

Many think that their default audio card is good enough... but, are you sure about it?

I was sure too, that my own sound card, a SigmaTel with the CXD9872RD was pretty good... the true is, that my ears and my TV speakers are not good enough to spot the difference between what could be considered a mediocre sound card (like mine) and what IS an excellent card.

It's time to upgrade it... so, the feautures that I'm looking for an excellent sound card, to use as analog audio capture device along with its video counterpart are:

    • variable bitrate (16/24bit)
    • variable sample frequency (44,1KHz and 48KHz mandatory)
    • high quality connection, gold-plated
    • RCA analog input/output are very welcome
    • S/PDIF digital input or output are highly appreciated
    • NO external interface box - at least only connection cables

After some days of hard web search, I found A LOT of high end cards... I picked up few of them, that could be interesting:

    M-Audio Audiophile 2496

    16/24bit, 96KHz, gold plated RCA in/out, digital in/out, ADC S/N >100dB

    Asus Xonar Essence ST

    16/24bit, 44.1 to 192KHz, digital in/out, ADC S/N >118dB, lacks RCA in

    ESI Audio Juli@

    16/24bit, 44.1 to 192KHz, gold plated RCA in/out, digital in/out, ADC S/N >114dB

    Lynx Studio Technology L22

    8/16/24/32bit, 8 to 200KHz, ADC S/N >117dB, XLR&BNC in/out, optional digital boards

The Lynx L22 could be defined the Rolls Royce of sound card; excellent high quality, lot of features, but really high price.

M-Audio is very good, but quite old; the price is reasonable.

Asus seems to be the newest card, with excellent S/N ratio, but unfortunately lacks RCA in/out.

At the end, ESI Juli@ could be definided the best sound card, considering the balance between audio quality, features and price.

But it's difficult to tell how much an high end sound card could be better than my old, default, simple sound card - that, by the way, is capable of capture digital sound bit-to-bit perfect, and that's a very good thing!

Then, I discovered a free tool that could tell me the quality of any sound card, using test signal sent and received. I used the earphone out, connected to the microphone in, to test my sound card - better connections could be used, of course, with better result, but I wanted to test the worst case scenario.

The tool is RightMark Audio Analyzer (or RMAA); I tested my sound card with RMAA 5.5, but there is also a newer version; I strongly encourage all of you interested in audio capture for their restoration projects (but not only) to download it, install it, take some minutes to learn how to use it, get results and finally post them in this thread.

Here you are the result of my SigmaTel CXD9872RD, earphones to mic:

After evaluating these cards results and mine, I was disappointed... and now I'd like to improve my audio card ASAP!

Waiting for your comments, and your sound cards results.
