Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Don't tell me you think the star wars prequels or Indiana Jones IV were decent films?

Return of the Jedi and , Willow, The Last Crusade were probably his last decent films Lucas will ever put out.

Notice he did not direct any of these films.  He did not direct Indy IV either but there Spielberg is as much to blame as Lucas.  I never imagined that one day Lucas and Spielberg would both be such lackluster disspointing directors.

When was the last good non serious film Spielberg did? I was dissapointed with both his war of the worlds and indy 4.  Never saw munich and don't really intend to.  In fact the only serious film of his i have seen is Schindlers List.  These political films and serious films are really not my thing.  I more like the Speilberg who made the original indy trilogy, Jaws, E.T. And Close Encounters.

The Lucas i admire pretty much was gone after the original star wars trilogy was finished, though Last Crusade was almost a return to form for him.  Even the Young Indiana Jones series was good.  But the prequels or indy 4 hell no,lol.

Everything about that fourth in the series film was dissasterous.  If i was the producer i could have found a better writer and script, done better casting, and hired a competent director.  The original films would be where the benchmark would be set.  Old fashioned stunts, shooting on location, models and real set pieces and matte paintings not created in a  computer for gods sake.

I mean look the script writing was better on young indy, they actually had location shooting, the cgi was used to augment and not completely ruin the experience.  Joel Mcneely's score was inspired and not phoned in like williams fourth entry.

Even the casting was better Corry Carrier better than JAke Lloyd, Sean Patrick Flannery better than Hayden.  Better scriptwriters like Frank Darabount etc.

Yes a lot of the prequels problems stem from the Same crew who did Young Indy. What happened to them in the years between 1994 and 1999?  I mean it is only five frickin years folks and they ruined the prequels.

Absence of Qui Gon "force ghost" explained?
Time

Qui Gon was actually as far as i know in the shooting script for Episode 3 where he teaches Yoda the concept of joining with the force, and talks about the Whills.  It is in the novelization.

Lucas apparently discarded the scene because the information or scene was not important in the final cut of the film, Or they just will not say that Liam Neeson turned it down just like Sean Connery turned down Crystal Skull.

Supposedly working for Lucas is poisen for your career as an actor as you get either typecasted or remembered for being in a childish video game movie.

The Problem with George Lucas
Time

The idea that Anakin died on Mustafar and that him and Vader are entirely seperate characters in the same body is so stupid.  That is the excuse for the Hayden as a ghost in Jedi.  I know of the term duality and such but must it be such a pathetic example of it?

Vader and Anakin are two sides of the same coin they are one and the same.  Here in Lucas revision it is almost making Kenobi a truth speaker in Star Wars 77. He killed and murdered himself, or kenobi killed him on mustafar what was kept alive was a zombie, robot that saved Luke and was admitted to Jedi Heaven, lol. And When the old dude Croaks he comes back as a creapy looking dude who is like 19 and looks nothing like Shaw.  Luke goes wtf? where is my father, lol.

I know i'm going off topic but man the 2004 cut of jedi is horrendous.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Exactly Abrams chose the style of Cloverfield though he gave the directing chores to someone else since  he was already signed on to helm trek.

Remember the lens flares and shaky cam from Cloverfield and all the motion sick complaints of theater patrons or epilepsy problems.

Dude anybody who has Epilepsy goes to see this will be very sick and have to leave.

The quick flashing lights like a christmas tree on the i-prise bridge.

And that is just for the regular version those seeing in it Imax who have sensitivity will be barfing the night away, lol.

Me i have no health issues but find the shaky cam annoying and the lense flares distracting.  Especially in that Clip with Spock grilling kirk and scotty.  Your focus should be on the actors and them delivering their lines not a flashy fucking light, unbelievable. Imagine if Pine and Quinto give oscar worthy performances and it is all ruined with the fucking blinking lights.

I have not seen the film but it had better be a chracter piece for Kirk, MCcoy and Spock.  Harve Bennett called it the "trinity" or trio of trek.

I will see this in theaters i lied, but if it stinks like the prequels or Indy 4 i will bash it on the internet, lol.

So who here is a fan of Stover's star wars novels?

I thought Traitor, Shatterpoint and Revenge of the Sith were fantastic reads.  His fourth which i looked forward to the most because it was a Luke Skywalker novel and seemed so cool Shadows of Mindor was a let down.

I am sure those who were fans of the Russ Manning comic strips of the 1970's thought it was awesome.  With the mind controlled dark troopers and Black Whole adept of the darkside, i thought it was as uber lame as Lumiya being in the legacy novels.  What's next Jar Jar meets Jaxxon the bunny?

EU fans have a long wait til Timothy Zahn's Next Star Wars novel comes out in 2011. ( I changed the thread a bit to include other upcoming EU)
Time

It will be set during the original trilogy supposedly between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and feature Vader and Palpatine, The Emperor's Hand Mara Jade and possibly thrawn as well. and those rogue 501st troopers mara jade let escape are supposed to be in it as well.

Too bad to get some old school EU star wars goodness we have to wait years like waiting for the next star wars movie was back in the day, lol.

I had hoped Stovers Shadows of Mindor was just that a return to the old star wars classic era too bad it kinda sucked and was to me 50% good and 50% shit or filler and was clearly rushed.

The last Zahn novel even had a cameo of Stacey aka pink five, lol.

You know who i wish they would get to Return to star wars, Michael A. Stackpole who wrote most of the x-wing series before Allston took over, which was awesome and one of the best star wars novels I, Jedi.

The next Fate of the Jedi called Omen is by another star wars firstling, Christie Golden who had written novels for star trek voyager.  She was the one who originally wrote the rebirth of voyager.  I quite enjoyed those novels though some trekkies hated them.

Now omen which they have tried to keep the story secret to is supposed to be dark and sith heavy.  They probably would have tapped Drew Karpshynn but he is writing the third bane novel to be released in november and currently at work on mass effect 2.

Plus the first star wars adult horror novel death troopers comes out sometime this year.  This is not the first horror star wars series though years ago there was a young readers line which was basically the star wars version of R.L. Stine.  Not sure if i spelled his name right, lol.

Not sure if i should start my own book review thread.  I have to read the first 2 bane novels i never read them, and i still have yet to read the coruscant nights trilogy.

The Problem with George Lucas
Time

Yeah but if like the gout was released in 2001 rather than say in 2006 i know for instance i would not be bitching about it being non anamorphic because there were very few widescreen displays back then or HDTV and then they were like 10 thousand dollars or something so a 4:3 letterbox picture would have been fine because people would not be worrying about these 16:9 tv displays.

I remember this is back before i even knew of anamorphic or all that when i first had a dvd player in like 2000 or something asking when the definitive collection was going to come on dvd with all the bonus materials and old documentaries.  Yes i was a dreamer in those days and thought Lucas was an okay guy, lol.

I stil don't have a 16:9 HDTV set by the way.  Too bad the gout does not even use the full resolution of a standard def dvd and the picture is soft and has dvnr problems.  In fact the picture is so bad i find it hard to even enjoy watching the movies. The 2004 restoration brought out details unnoticed before, too bad the colors were botched the sound fucked up and the bad cgi was still there.

I have waited forever for a watchable version of Star Wars 1977 so far no fan restoration has been done, i'm waiting for puggos and the vintage edit.   The classic ocpmovie edition was just plain bad on all levels, i'm referring of course to the dual layer version the 2.0. The Editdroid was the best until the gout was released.

I would like to give the X-0 the award for best transfer but it does not exist.  It is vaporware. Of course the screenshots say otherwise, but still no release.  The project all but dissapeared when the gout was announced talk about Lucas taking the wind out of their sails, lol.

Funny enough Stover had Mace right before he was zapped out the window in palpatines office notice too late that Anakin was Palpatines Shatterpoint.

Which ultimetely is prophetic because luke re- awakens the jedi  Anakin in vader long enough for him to destroy palpatine.  Therefore he was the chosen one who brought balance to the force by doing away with the sith.

Fan debate still rages who really was the chosen one Anakin or Luke.  It could be neither if the EU is taken into account because a hundred and something years after the return of the jedi the sith return.

Maybe the other, Leia was the chosen one, lol.

Maybe the jedi's legacy rest with Cade Skywalker.

Me the EU is just not canon with the films, though most of it is a damn site better than those prequels. Even the bad superweapons of the week, clone emporers, lol.

The Problem with George Lucas
Time

The thing with George is he goes back and ruins good movies he made to fit movies he made 20 or more years later that are very bad.

He ruins American Graffiti by adding a cgi shot to it.  He ruins Raiders of the Lost Ark by adding a cgi shot to it.  He ruined the star wars trilogy by adding not needed cgi and the same thing he did to THX 1138.

At least in the case of star wars even though being non anamorphic laserdisc masters as bonus discs at least they are on dvd.  THX 1138 original version or graffiti theatrical cut are not on dvd and would have to be recreated by fans.

Yet Howard the Duck, Willow, Radioland Murders, Tucker, More American Graffiti are not having cgi added to them or being ruined.  Though he did recut parts of young indy and put out cut versions of the droids and ewok cartoons.  The Ewok films other than having the theatrical title cards rather than tv versions are uncut, with no bad cgi added.

The Indiana Jones Trilogy other than being cleaned up and having some color differences than the vhs versions and having things like boom mikes or glass reflections removed are still untouched.  Too bad the blu ray with have that added cgi shot in raiders= no sale.

Everything from the messed up soundtrack and poor botched colors on the 2004 versions of the films, to the debacle of having 16 year old laserdisc transfers on dvd to represent the original cinematic vision of the films.

Lucasfilm Companies back in the nineties cared about quality and did qaulity control before putting out a release.  Sure okay they did good dvd releases of the prequel films even though the theatrical cuts were missing it still does not cut it.  I would like to retire my phantom menace japan laserdisc someday too bad Lucash has no intent of ever having that version on dvd.  Episode 1 has bad edge enhancement but due to it being the first major Lucasfilm title on dvd that was not just dumped onto disc, and during the early years of dvd it usually gets a pass.  That does not mean Lucas cannot afford a new scan in 4k of the original film negative.

The 2004 version is not my favorite version of the trilogy but i would like to have a corrected version in my collection with no wonky colors. Garbage mattes, lightsabers changing colors reversed sound channels in the dogfight over the death star as well as the lso score being non existant.

Lucas cares so little for the original versions of the films he had the video masters from 1993 dumped directly to disc and had the menu design outsourced, while the 2004 had Award Winning Van Ling Menus.  See this is something you could get away with in 1997 or 1998 but not in 2006. I know that a lot of first issue dvds were not anamorphic laserdisc to dvd dumps in single layer.  Paramount did this with Star Trek movies back then i think undiscovered country was letterbox.

The new tv commercial looks awful.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAot3sC2xjE

I laughed out loud and cringed at the same time When it says "this is not your father's star trek"  Well my Fathers Star Trek was a classic that starred William Shatner and had 2 good seasons and 1 bad one, not too sure what to say about this 200 million dollar turd.

The shaky cam and the lens flares from the preview clips = fail.  Unless it was their mission to have the theater issue barf bags to its patrons.

Even in the prequels, Boba Fett is not a clone
Time

I don't care what Lucas put in the prequels.  To me Boba will always be Jaster Mareel a former stormtrooper .

Clone of some no name Jango played by a bad actor, nope.

Just like Vader is not pictured in my mind while watching the oot as a whiny Hayden in a suit.

The EU backstory for fett from the early days is much more acceptable to me than Lucas revised version in the prequels.  Having Fett being a little kid like Anakin was in Episode 1 and just as annoying but actually more than Jake was.

The prequels gave FETT's motivation as he hates Jedi because Windu killed his daddy, roflmfao.

I always wondered why fett hated Han Solo personally. What was their history.  Did they bump into one another in the imperial navy?

Hopefully in the context of the film the story changes in the timeline, why things look different and the jokey dialogue will be given some sense and context outside of the couple of minutes of clips released.

In a head to head match of which film will make more money this or Wolverine i wonder if trek will wipe the floor with the competition.  Remember Nemesis outside of being a horrible film that people did not go to see, people were more excited to see PJ's second rings installment.

The film was also poorly edited and a poor man's rehash cliff notes version of wrath of khan.

The Remans looked like the Morlocks from the remake of the time machine which Logan also worked on.

The casting for Patrick Stewart's double was also incompetent casting.  Either Stewart should have played both roles or they should have gotten someone equal to his acting ability.

'Wolverine' takes a leak
Time

Do you guys think it would be better if Marvel got the rights back from fox and rebooted the X-men Franchise?

I mean X-men 1-3 was essentially already the wolverine trilogy.  And the third film by Ratner was just plain all around bad.  I wish Singer had directed that instead of that Superman Returns movie.

Because of that we got a bad third X-men film and a bad superman film that did not live up to the Donner Superman movie.

I am very worried that they are going to get Wolverine all wrong as well.  Seeing how much i loved the Claremont/miller comics before Woverine had his own comic or any part in the newly rebooted X-men comic started by Jim Lee. I mean new back in the day.

The only thing i can say they got right outside of actually seeing this movie is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  That is one thing i can say FOX did right on the X-men films the actors chosen to play certain roles.  Like Patrick Stewart as Xavier or Mckellen as magneto.  What is more badass than having captain picard and gandalf in the same film series.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

I think i will pay to see this movie for laughs because clip 3 is damn funny i must say.

To find out the story you will not get it spoiled in advance.  The novelization was supposed to come out before the film now it is coming out after the film has already opened.

novel was pushed back from the 3rd of may to the 13th and the movie opens on the 9th i believe.

The screenplay had not been published in book form or posted online.  There are no plans for a comic book adaptation.

The little that i can find of the making of the film will not be published til july in cinefex months after the film opens.  No making of books.  The story is held very secretive as well as how the film was made.  The press screenings and premieres have had a rediculous level of security to prevent it appearing online as a cam boot.

The level of secrecy and security here have not been seen since since Return of the Jedi or the Lord of the rings trilogy, and made that look like a joke in comparison.

I want to read Orci and Kurtzmen version of the story through the intermediary of Alan Dean Foster and compare it against Shatners own academy story.  It goes without saying neither match up with what little is known of the stories backstory Gene never bothered to write down.  And if he did write down such things in notes and story drafts, only Majel or Dorothy Fontana would have been knowledgeable of such.  None have been published.  Majel passed away.  DC Fontana has said nothing about treks origins.  Neither of the 2 genes roddenberry and coon can talk beyond the grave either.

There were novels written in the past Like Final Frontier, The First adventure and Best destiny that outlined George Kirks backstory along with Robert April and James Kirk.  Another book burning dreams told the unknown story of Christopher Pike.  The level of canon of these novels has to be put into question, still even as trek EU they fit the old show and roddenberry canon like a glove.  Unlike Say Shatner's or JJ versions where they just make stuff up we know to be incorrect.

I don't like how JJ and his guys are allowed to rewrite the canon and backstories and now these will be the accepted canon histories for treks universe and characters.

Despite the fact that it craps all over 3 seasons of star trek and six films. This is way worse than Berman, Braga and Moore ever did to star trek.  Then Manny Coto came along and saved Enterprise in its final season by showing an absolute reverence for trek classic series canon, and the show still got cancelled.

You add up all the retcons since the premiere of star trek the next generation and it is not even a tenth of the destroying this new JJ movie does.  Its essentially doing away with 40 plus years of canon and saying if your a fan too bad were gonna fuck up your favorite series and characters.

Its like Lucas revisisting Star Wars twenty years after the fact with a revisionist take totally at odds with the original trilogy and a blatant disregard for canon and that series continuity plot and characters.  Changing things so much things on the surface superficially look the same but the universe has been reset and it was not necessary, it only made the true fans outraged.

If they labeled it as Star Trek Alternate, or Star Trek JJ Abrams Vision and allowed the previous shows and movies to stand as is people might not be as angry.

Still no matter what JJ does it cannot be as bad as Lucas having chewie and Yoda be best pals, Boba Fett a clone, anakin a whiny emo goth teenager who ends up being more annoying than Jar Jar.  That is saying something when you turn a badass like Vader into a pussy who is more annoying than the worst sidekick/ comic relief character ever conceived for the silver screen.

Howard the Duck is finally coming to DVD

We live in a very strange universe one in  which an awful movie like Howard the  Duck gets a remastered anamorphic dvd release from a newly made HD remaster taken from its original negative and star wars original trilogy is still laserdisc masters non anamorphic.

What is next a fully restored and remastered star wars holiday special before the oot gets a decent release, lol.

If mainstream star wars fandom is the original versions being buried and destroyed and only available in sixteen year old laserdisc quality i want nothing to do with the mainstream.

The same people who back up Lucas on cutting up the original negative which is almost never done.

I can only think of a couple other examples Like the oneg for the premiere cut of Metropolis being altered, or Goldfinger.

How much money did the original star wars trilogy make for Lucas?

I mean we can't even get a barebones straight up transfer of an original print or whatever else is available as a source outside the original negative.  How Much would a bare bones transfer to dvd in anamorphic cost?

And if Lucas does not want to do he can still reap benefits from the profits if he gave it over to a film archive like AFI, or give it to criterion.

I am sure there are people all over the world who love the original films and would offer their Prefessional services for free to restore these films.  Get an archival print, dvd or blu ray made.

Lucas hates the originals imho, he hates them even more because people hated the prequels and special editions and will never allow them on any modern format in anything approaching acceptable standards.

The sets in ROTJ
Time

The funny thing is Had Abbadon was reused in the EU legacy comics series for a volcanic planet much like Mustafar.  Gee the original storyboards for Return of the Jedi showed the imperial homeworld had Volcanic activity down in the lower regions of Palpatines Palace.  Vader and Luke would have dueled over a pit of Lava.  Lucas told Joe Johnston to stop work on it and he would save it for another day.

Still in that same draft Ben comes back bodily from the netherworld and yoda as a ghost to help Luke in his fight, very bad idea.

Lucas first ideas are not always his best.  He was going to have a 13 year old Han Solo in Revenge of the Sith who with Chewie whose family adopted Han and raised them together as brothers, meet and help save yoda.  He was supposed to be according to Lucas notes i think based on memory like Tom Sawyer and Tarzan.

How about Lucas was making it all up as he went and Obi Wan in Star Wars 1977 did not lie.  At that point Vader and Luke's father were two seperate characters and Leia was not the sister.

Plus Lucas can decide on something then change it years later.  Originally Obi Wan was owen's brother.  What Anakin's relation to Owen and kenobi is not known or destribed in the Return of the Jedi novelization.  But that same novelization also puts the Kibosh on Leia's mother dieing right when she was just born.

Yoda was originally obi wans teacher and not as the prequels crap all over the concept, neither were there characters like Maul, jar jar or qui gon.  There is no frickin midi chlorians this is just bad form of returning back to quantifying the force remember the Kiber crystal?

Also very bad idea since Lucas got the idea from mitochrondria.  Star Wars is space fantasy not science fiction.  If it was really science fiction well it would be science friction, lol.

It would be like trying to use plausible science to explain Eastern Mysticism, or the very basic form of meta physical new age spriitualism.

There are already a lot of retcons in the original trilogy between the films without the prequels having to add allsorts of stupid ones that make zero sense and actually make more questions than they answer.

The Emporer as an original concept and in the star wars novelization as well as in empire strikes back is a more mystery man behind the curtain wizard of oz type character than the cackling maniac in jedi.

In fact its not really described and may have been one of Alan Dean Fosters additions but the emperor may have been a victim as well, he was controlled by the very assistants and bootlickers who got him on the throne.   They through fear and treachery had the jedi killed.  Sounds more like Rome than star wars imperials.

Vader as originally written comes off as an Evil Ronin Samurai.  Or maybe one of the Knights Templar who went bad.

Oh and the reckless younger days of Kenobi were relocated to the EU junior novels jedi apprentice series.

Kind of like how to experience the full clone wars which were not told on screen you needed the comics the video games, the novels  and now 2 very contracdictory cartoons series.

Such cross media was not done since shadows of the empire and was done again with the force unleashed.

Too bad in recent years Lucasfilm products leave a lot to be desired, i remember when their games devision was second to none and when they made good films.

Now Star Wars and Indiana Jones are just a giant empire of merchandising without any other thought than making money.

Even in the prequels, Boba Fett is not a clone
Time

Well at least Boba's Helmet stayed on during the oot keeping him a mysterious character, and if he was shown without it on you guys would be complaining that prequel guy who played jango looks nothing like Jeremy Bulloch.  Who did not provide the voice that was wingreen.  When they replaced his voice in empire with the shitty prequel phoned in actors voice i was pretty pissed off.

I thought it was horrible in the comic Empire Strikes Back infinities when they showed Boba looking like that hack actor from the prequels that dude is not Boba.  Thank the maker its an infinities title and has not replaced the real comic by Al Williamson based on the real version of empire strikes back not either of the destroyed versions. A New Hope fared much worse i just found out it was put out of print by dark horse in favor of the stupid 1997 comic, which fuuny enough is based on a film not even on official dvd, lol.  Though who would pay for 2004 versions of the comics.  They redid the novelizations as Jr novels by Ryder Windam to try and tie the orignals to the stupid prequels.  it goes without saying i never bothered to read these new fanfiction official accounts of the original trilogy as approved changes by Lucash.
