Info: Preserving Television shows?
Time

There was a Logans Run tv series just like there was an animated version and tv series of planet of the apes. Both Apes tv shows are on dvd. Logans Run TV is not as far as i am aware at this point. It is only a bootleg.

I want Dark Skies but i am unwilling to spend 40 to 60 american dollars for a bootleg set that benefits piracy.

I also wish Wing Commander Academy and that Steven Spielberg Invasion America cartoon, the adult version not the censored were on dvd.

There are other bad sci fi shows that made it to dvd and some that did not Viper had 2 versions neither are on dvd.

The bad tv series produced by the sci fi channel Flash Gordon is available in region 2 and 4 pal but not ntsc, lol.

Dark Skies was different from the X-files and interesting and had Jerry Ryan in it before star trek voyager or during i cannot remember.

Nowhere Man and Space above and beyond were thought to never make it to dvd but were released.

Seven Days time travel show still not on dvd, but seaquest and sliders are.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars

I'm going to go see this film and just have a good time watching it.

Typical Star Whores-fanboyism saying "LUCAS DESTROYED STAR WARS! BAWWWWWWWWWWW!" Get the fuck over it.

You are on an original trilogy forum saying how you don't care about the original star wars trilogy. That makes as much sense as going on a nintendo forum and flaming people there like a troll because you are a sony fanboy.

And for the record Lucas destroyed more than star wars. He also destroyed indiana jones, thx 1138 and american graffiti. If you have the old indy boxsets on dvd you better hold onto them because god knows what kind of tinkering will make it into the blu ray release.

When i can watch THX 1138, American Graffiti and Star Wars how they are supposed to be in good anamorphic quality like every other joe smo in hollywood does, maybe i will cut lucas a little slack. But come one man dvd is now older than 12 years old now and still no quality releases. and I would be willing to bet he makes people wait for the blu rays for a few years rather than giving consumers what they fucking want. Lucash loves to jerk peoples chains. He is even getting saga fans of the 2004 dvd sets angry by no blu ray release.

Lucasfilms dvd release scheme and treatment of these classic films is an absolute joke. I remember when they were all about quality releases back in the THX laserdisc program days.

Oh yeah i forgot to mention he recut young indiana jones for the dvd versions, dude cannot leave wll enough alone. Because he did that and had the audacity to charge over a hundred dollars a set i refuse to buy those dvds until the broadcast versions and movie versions are both available together.

Next thing he will ask if he can go back to his student films at USC and insert Jar Jar in THX 1138:4EB. Holy shit they need to fit his original vision lets add cgi german troops and explosions to freiheit, replace the car in a man and his car with a cgi one. Replace the Jazz music in Herbie (as in Herbie hancock) with Jedi rocks.

THE OT SOUNDTRACKS SALVAGE - SWESBROTJ -"remastered"(so far)+ LP's (Released)
Time

By any chance is 7FN going to do a vinyl transfer of return of the jedi?

I am still totally dissapointed to this day that no double LP with a nice booklet was ever produced for Jedi. Empire Strikes Back is awsome in that regard.

Jedi always seems to get the shaft, No CAV laserdisc release, no double LP and so on.

Also the quality of the recordings made available to the consumers and general public for Jedi's soundtrack sound muffled and low quality. Why can't Lucas have those original masters transfered as audiophile quality CD.

I guess they don't care because nobody cares about quality anymore. We have traded quality for convenience of mp3 ipod and itunes. Nobody can tell that something sounds like shit on a tiny portable device with crappy headphones and massive compression. Nobody can tell the clipping done on the remastered CD in 1997 once compressed down to crap mp3 can they?

I'm not paying to go to the theaters anymore until hollywood starts making films again and not some bizarre concoction of cgi toons and videogames videos put on screen as a movie.

It is an insult to call a movie shot on HDVideo a film, it is an insult to true cinematographers everywhere and a joke when you look at the films produced on 35mm film versus the garbage they sell these days.

When you create whole sets, characters, locales, and models all in the computer why even bother. Is it just lazyness on there part to see how an art form should not been replaced with something else because it is newer and flashier.

This ADD, video game , music video generation with zero attention spans results in bad cgi blockbusters with explosions and no character development.

How could Vader not see Luke there???!!!
Time

Well this little continuity got an EU patch when they showed characters could learn to hide themselves in the force. Like turning a light switch on or off, lol.

Not so sure this was really a problem to begin with as nitpickers overly analyze these films. They are movies and meant to be enjoyed not disected. The problem of the EU is trying to overly explain things Lucas never touched upon in his movies or left intentionally vague.

I mean you could looks for the retcon patches even in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Since the story was being made up on the fly it is not entirely seamless. Vader originally was not Luke's father and Leia not his sister. Now it is just accepted as a given or that was the story lucas originally set out to tell.

Those who were born in the Seventies and remember seeing a film simply called Star Wars in 1977 know better though.

Maybe amazon should put up a listing for a restored anamorphic oot trilogy and see the interest it draws.

I don't know how we can all prove to Lucas that fans of the originals exist and in large numbers.

Start a new petition, write to film preservation groups. Write to Afi. BFi, ASC.

Lucas thinks the fans of the originals is a niche market and will not spend the money to restore films he thinks are inferior to his final cut. He claimed the 2004 were his final version so can we take him at his word, or is he just waiting for technology to advance for his 3D ultimate cut.

The Problem with George Lucas
Time

Does anybody know if there has ever been a biography of Lucas's Films rather than a biography of the man that tries to uncover every crumb about his personal life.

Lucas should be judged as a film maker on the merits of his films and not his idiosyncrasies of being a human being like us all and flawed.

Just wondering because i think a book that traced the themes that run through all his films from his student shorts up to present time would be interesting.

I have no personal animosity to the man. I am still a fan of lucas and only want to see him embrace the films he made that we all love rather than to keep them buried, meaning the star wars oot of course.

I love the original version of Graffiti and THX too and would love to have them on dvd in anamorphic form side by side with the original star wars trilogy.

Why is he unhappy with the original version of the films. I could see the changes being made if fans hated the films and thought they were flawed. But fans by and large love the original trilogy as it was made. I mean if you were sucessful and had a hit that became a classic why ruin a good thing?

We already know of musicians, novelists and film makers revising and changing their work. Why condemn Lucas for what is considered the norm when it comes to artists works. I mean if he preserved the original versions of the films in archival quality there really would be no reason for forums with so called whiny fanboys.

Mythologist Campbell thought the original trilogy was a true work of art. And so why destroy that art with adding silly cgi cartoons. I mean does someone come along and draw over original paintings with crayon and go "yeah i think this looks better".

Because Vader does not want to give Luke the advantage he won't enter the darkened alcove. In the novelization luke throws away his lightsaber, hands it over to vader who clips it to his belt and steps into the darkness to confront Luke.

When Vader senses Luke Thoughts about his sister leia He Roars "twins!!". "Obi Wan was wise to hide her from me if you will not turn to the darkside then perhaps your sister will"

Then Luke uses the force to make his saber fly to his hands and unclip form vaders belt, shouting "Neverrrrrrr!" in Fury and is one step away from completely going over to the darkside. All he has to do is murder his own father in anger.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

So trekmovie confirms the planet destroyed in this movie. It proves the break they are making from continuity.

The new trailers look like a action movie that hollywood regularly puts out in the summer and completely generic. Generic and expensive.

Star Trek is supposed to be so much more than just a movie of the week or month, or a dumb action flick for guys who like naked chicks and football. I like those things too, but star trek is supposed to make you wonder and be thinking mans science fiction when it is done right.

JJ Abrams promised an updated Trek that was a realised future with plausible science in its science fiction, Instead we get water pipes in engineering straight out of the early 20th century. This is supposed to be the 23rd century. Will they have apple stores and itunes and ipods in the twenty third century, how about bad actors who look like they are from a teen soap drama.

Naval Vessels and submarines in the nineties look far more high tech than what is shown in pictures of this movie.

This is a dumb action flick like Independence Day, Or Starship Troopers. And it does not even have the heart of First Contact that was also an action flick.

Still That would be as laughable as comparing the acting Talents of Patrick Stewart to Chris Pine.

Where did they come up with the title: "The Phantom Menace"?
Time

It could easily be Palpatine or Anakin. Therefore i say it refers to the sith in general.

In the phantom menace the Jedi council says the sith have been exstinct for a millenium and they don't believe they could return without their knowledge.

And Yoda says "ah! hard to see the darkside is!".

Haters of the prequels would say the Phantom Menace is Jar Jar, when jar jar appears star wars was destroyed from a certain point of view, lol.

In Episode II the growing power of the darkside clouds the jedis judgement in the force. The secret creation of a clone army happens right under the councils noses. Palpatine Sidious gets elected as Chancellor at the End of episode 1 and if there right when they burn Qui Gon's body. When Yoda says " always two there are. no more, no less. a master and an apprentice." Then Mace says "but which was destroyed the master or the apprentice" then the camera zooms in on sidious face.

Everything from the trade federation dispute and embargo and capture of naboo and its queen, to the seperatist movement the creation of the clones.

The Jedi being made generals and leaders of soldiers, Chancellor Valorum being romoved through the lies and treachery of palpatine who used padme to gain his ends.

The entire prequels are sidious pulling the strings and making the jedi move like pawns to the slaughter in his deadly game of revenge of the sith, the sith waited over a thousand years since the time of darth bane to exact their revenge.

Having already seen the original trilogy I knew full well when seeing Episode 1 for the first time that Palpatine and the Master of Maul where one and the same. Even so Lucas tried to keep it a secret until episode III's reveal. In Episode II a plot point was dropped about Sido Dyas the sith lord pretending to be a jedi who ordered the clones. Instead they changed the name to syfo dyaas, and in the EU made him a jedi manipulated into ordering the clones and murdered by Dooku.

Palpatine the puppetmaster trys to make the future he sees through the darkside of the force come true. Therefore by engineering an outcome he can claim to have foreseen it, as he does in return of the jedi. But Luke does just what the emporer least expects. He expects everyone to be coruptible by power, that is how Vader was originally seduced to the dark side.

The Jedi betrayed themselves once they went to war according to the novelization of revenge of the sith, they had lost from the very beginning because Jedi are peackeepers and not soldiers.

A game - The PT Memo
Time

Right. I bet there will be lines down the street for Red Tales: The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen.

It will be as big as a hit as howard the duck, willow, tucker, radioland murders, more american graffiti or the star wars holiday special.

For those who cannot detect sarcasm i'm joking about how the only sucessfull films Lucas has really had after the smash hit of Graffiti are star wars and indiana jones films. And the original indy films did not make much money in comparison to how much the fourth one made. The same thing with the star wars prequels the prequels made Lucas way richer than the oot ever did.

Critically he may be seen as a failure as an artist for the second half of his career. Business wise the guy makes more money with every star wars thing he puts out. The slimpack dvd boxsets are bestsellers on amazon.

The prequels are still netting him money, and so is indy 4, the clone wars cartoon and the force unleashed.

The memo should be further sent back in time before he destroys the star wars trilogy in 1996-1997.

Personally i don't give a crap about the prequels, as they are now or if they were never made.

But ruining the very movies that created the Lucas legend is all but unforgivable.

Were he to hand directing chores and writing chores over on a sequel trilogy based on Zahn's books, Spielberg should not be allowed to direct. He helped lucas destroy indiana jones. He ruined HG welles War of the worlds. He helped bay ruin transformers.

Directors on a short list i would pick:

Guillerme Del Toro

Joss Whedon

Peter Jackson

Christopher Nolan

Star Wars fans - have you ever...

You know someone should use a jedi mind trick on Lucas to release the original versions in anamorphic and restored by Robert Harris.

" You will release the original trilogy in restored Anamorphic Quality" Star Wars fan

" I will release the original trilogy in restored anamorphic quality" Lucas

Star wars fan hands him the 2004 bullshit editions "these are not the films we are looking for"

Lucas "these are the films you are not looking for"

fan "move along"

Lucas "move along. Move along"

Brick Vader might look a little tougher if he was not wielding a pink Lightsaber. Looks like the guy who made this video used the destroyed 2004 version of the movies.

So what if the gout lacks sharpness and is non anamorphic At least Vader does not have a girly colored bubblegum pink saber.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Well considering Ben Burtt created the new phaser sounds. The sounds of the enterprise engines, warp, doors opening and closing on the bridge i am not that suprised you hate it.

I mean he is the guy after all who made the sounds for star wars. This is the first time they brought a sound designer in from a rival franchise to do the work. Though on the special effects end ILM has been connected to the franchise in one way or another since day one. Richard Edlund did uncredited effects work on the original series. John Dykstra formerly of Ilm worked on the motion picture. Then When Star Trek 2 was made ILM was involved in an official capacity. They worked on III and IV. Did not do V. Worked on 6. Worked on Generations and first contact. Did not work on Insurrection or Nemesis. They did the pilot for star trek the next generation and built the first model for the enterprise D.

Oh and the score samples for the soundtrack i am not at all impressed sounds too much like a tv score and not Epic enough like Goldsmith or Horner. In fact it reminds me of the clone wars soundtrack and not in a good way.

Everything about this movie other than Casting a hottie like Zoe Saldana to be Uhura is an epic fail on a grand scale. From the tv director who was crap on MI:III. To the tv composer. I can think of plenty of people i would have rather scored and directed this movie.

I listened to the incredibles score at someone on this boards suggestion and was not at all impressed. Complete and absolute crap that might work for a cartoon, kids movie but not what star trek needs.

God how i miss Jerry Goldsmith and his Epic music from the main theme to the motion picture especially not being in this movie. And their own version of Alexander Courage tv theme is pathetically done as bad as Kiners quoting of williams main star wars theme. Giacchino's scores for Alias were like elevator music and just plain bad, his lost stuff was okay but nothing to exactly recommend to those who buy soundtracks.

Even in the prequels, Boba Fett is not a clone
Time

No Jagged Fel is the head of the Imperial Remnant, and Admiral Daala (yes that evil Imperial bitch from the maw cluster who tortured Han) is the head of the Galactic Alliance.

Me i like Canderous Ordo from the Kotor games as the Mandalore, though Fett is not half bad.

The Sith War comics pretty much set up the fact that the sith used Mandalore and the mandalorians as their goons. Which explains why Fett has a business relationship with Darth Vader other than the fact that the Empire is the legitimate government and the rebels are terrorists and criminals, or at least that is the imperial view.

To me Fett was never meant to be anything but a Foil for Han Solo to be played off of. Kind of like Belloq to Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Fett gets his coolness from being mysterious, as Lucas said he was kind of modeled on Clint Eastwood who played the man with no name in the famous trilogy by Sergio Leone.

Once fett is no longer mysterious he is no longer cool. The prequels ruined him as a cool character in the same way they ruined Darth Vader.

The funny thing is the most interresting part of Vader's story was left out of the movies. How he is in the between time between Episode III and IV. How he hunts down the Jedi. His obcession with hunting down and killing obi wan kenobi, He transition from a Sith Apprentice into a badass Sith Lord who makes all tremble in fear of his presence. Funny though he is just a weak incomplete man in a suit, he lost his humanity to serve an imposed system of rule by an iron fist.

Also he never was shown as the morally compassionate, champion for the people and a knight in shining armor When he was known as Anakin. Other than for a start in Episode 1 he is shown as a little slave boy who knows nothing of greed. Once we get to Episode II though, the whole slave angle is dropped as well as Anakin starting out a good dude and becoming bad. He is already a selfish Jerk. Kills all the women and Children and male warrior sandpeople in revenge. A Jedi must never succumb to revenge. Revenge is of the dark side.

It is clear though he does not really cross over the abyss until he is compelled by palpatine to do his first pre-meditated murder. Count Dookus only reason for existing was to push anakin over the brink. Still he was only wading in darkness and was not drowned in it yet. He was not consumed by it until he was manipulated by his emotional attachment to padme to save her from dying. Ironic that his attempt to change fate is what causes her death.

Plus yoda already hit on a critical point in the phantom menace. Anakin was affraid to lose his mother, which grew into a selfish desire to prevent people from dying no matter the cost. His Fear, his inability to let go. To be serene like a good jedi, to surrender all emotional attachments. Fear truly is the path to the dark side. lol.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Because its probably a fake rubber or plastic stunt sword and does not have the heft and weight of a Japanese samurai sword.

Still asian made swords whether Chinese, Japanese or any other weigh less than there their european Knight counterparts carried.

Sulu being Japanese and having a samurai sword is consistent with his ethnicity where in the old series episode being drunk he started thinking he was the leader of the three musketeers and had a french style fencing sword. Which is just plain silly. In real life you can be trained in body and mind in arcane martial disciplines and weapons training, so why not a samurai?

I mean this series is pure fantasy anyway just like star wars. Even though set our primary universe the science of trek is laughably implausible if not outright impossible. Trek is just as much space western, space opera/ fantasy as star wars. Just not sword and sorcery, and bad episodes with black cats and black magic crossed that line.

I mean how is Sulu swinging around a samurai sword any more silly than kirks karate chop and fake kicks and punches, or Worf's swinging around a batlith or however it is spelled.

Sure it is a lot more credible when a gymnast trained in kendo like Ray Park who played darth Maul in the phantom menace is swinging around a sword when he clearly knows how to do so. Unlike actors getting a crash course like Mark Hamill on the old trilogy being trained by Bob Anderson, and on the new trilogy people like Hayden Christensen trained by Nick Guillard. Park was great as maul in star wars, toad in x-men. and as snake eyes in gi joe will being awesome.

As for John Cho from Harold and Kumar who is entirely miscast for this role being a swordsmen is laughable.

I mean he got slammed for not even being Japanese in the beginning, but i just only picture him as that dumbass from those 2 stoner movies. I mean it is not Harold and Kumar help spock excape from Guantanamo bay, lol. Or Sulu and Kirk go to white castle.

Then again Simon Pegg as Scotty though his scottish accent is real is awful on all levels. Quinto aka sylar as spock is a joke. a sexed up uhura played by saldana does not give respect to the role nichelle created. Urban is almost believable as a charicature of deforrest kelley, and pine nowhere excudes the coolness of Shatner as kirk.

Dragonball Z:Reanimated
Time

So they are leaving the only dragon ball i like dragon ball alone and only remaking dragon ball Z.

I like the original better with Goku the little kid and Bulma the humor and comedy. This is an extension to where he is grown up right? I never liked the change in the animation style from dragon ball original to Z. Looks too much like american comic books over muscled characters. Don't mind the Kung fu and stuff quite so much in moderation but that is all Z is. Watching the super saiyens duking it out looks a bit much like a street fighter videogame, and this was before the first street fighter animated film was done right?

You have characters shooting Hadoken like energy balls out of there hands with the focus of there Ki power, lol.

A theory about the coloring on the 04 DVDs.
Time

Automated correction and cleanup is a joke unless you have quality check at every step in the digital restoration pipeline. I think according to Harris the film restoration supervisor.

And When it is done you should have an archival new negative made and a new print backed up on film made.

I personally believe wherever possible in photochemical and frame by frame, by hand restoration in a clean environment so they don't add dirt back in when cleaned off. Like the 1997 restoration by YCM Labaratory. Which would be a perfect restore if Lucasfilm did not splice those dreaded cgi shots into the physical negative and therefore destroy film history.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

This will be my last point on this because i don't want to further derail this thread. But that saying i was going to hate the 4th Indy from the start is completely false. I saw Last Crusade in theaters twice and loved the film, and waited since that one was released to ask for the next one.

A Mayan/Aztec or whatever temple transforming into an alien spaceship? Trans-dimension beings this is not stargate or star trek.

The surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge and riding it through the air for 3 miles. The cgi gophers.prairie dogs, shia and the monkeys winging like tarzan after the Russians.

Falling down three waterfalls in a jeep. This stuff was was more ridiculous to me than any of the previous 3 films.

The stuff in the previous films was made to fit into the context of the Indiana Jones world. Not shoehorn bad ripoffs of the ripoffs like the mummy or national treasure into the movie, or add x-files into it too.

When the Temple became a spaceship i exclaimed audibly in the theater "wtf? Lucas" and almost walked out of the movie. I have never in my life been more embarrassed in seeing such a worthless piece of Hollywood garbage put there on the silver screen before my very eyes.

This was a new low actually way worse than episode 1, 2 and 3 of star wars. Because i actually cared about the character Harrison Ford plays. It would have been like if lucas made episode 7 of star wars with hamill, fisher and ford and crapped all over the original trilogy with over the top cgi nonsense and antics.

I had no established connection to Christensen or Portman and could give a shit less if lucas ruins those characters edits or adds cgi to the movies, crap on them whatever.

But the original original trilogy needs to be left the fuck alone and not shit upon like it is.

As it is there is 1 ruined Indiana Jones movie, ruined with overwrought and uncessary cartoon esque looney tunes cgi. and All six star wars films ruined with Cgi. Not a single one left untouched, even the originals. And we got them in a laserdisc transfer in non anamorphic. It was like " Sorry we ruined your favorite movies here you can watch them as bonus discs in shitty bootleg non anamorphic quality. You should be thankfull we destroyed those classic films and made you buy the lucas approved 2004 DVD twice to get to see them."

Star Wars is for children. Adults: Stop being selfish.
Time

I'll take the Ewok battle over the Wookiee battle in Episode III anyday. That looked like a frickin video game.

The cost of manufacturing more than one Costume and getting a bunch of tall actors back in the oot was cost prohibitive. at least according to Lucas.

His general idea survived into return of the jedi. He basically outlined the bonfire thing with Wookiees celebrating around it for winning the great battle back in 1977 in a rolling stone interview.

One reviewer pointed out though that that the little guy did not win that battle with sticks and rocks, it was not won until they used Imperial weapons against the strormtroopers by capturing an AT-ST.

Do the ewoks and the wookiees share a similar evolutionary history in the star wars galaxy? Or was Lucas using the same concept twice? Kashyyk and Endor are virtually one and the same. They live in the same kind of tree houses. Are a primitive and warrior race.

Except Chewbacca is the first mate of the Millenium Falcon, is relatively intelligent and can fix spaceships as well as be a starpilot when necessary.
