STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread
Time
You seem to have taken to the Usenet newsgroup lark fairly easily.

Lets just hope that a few others read how easy it was for you and follow suit.

Cost still seems to be the main issue.

However, using my suggestion of $25/£13 for 65GB probably works out cheaper than what many would donate to torrent sites for the same amount of downloaded data.

But, as stated previously, a mixture of torrents and newsgroups gives the best balance.

Your best bet is to read the Usenet Tutorial? thread in this forum.

The best tip you will find there is to read this tutorial.

I too am in the UK with ntl. Their servers are usually pretty good but when they do screw up, I have a back-up account at AstraWeb. 13 quid for 65Gb if you are interested.

Also, check out the search facility at Newzbin to see what is currently on the newsgroups.

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
From reading the checklist, "WOW" appears to be the best reaction.

As soon as I read it I rushed off and got out my Wookie Groomer ANH Splitscreen to try and look out for all the changes. That is me up for yet another late night!!!!!!!!!

As an aside, the one change in the 2004 version that seemed pointless to me was at around the 10 min 17 second point where the sky behind 3PO in the dessert has been changed from the original when every other dessert/sky shot stayed the same...................

Idea: my ultimate Star Wars - Anthology DVD collection
Time
Ah... civilisation! P&S is an abomination. I don't know what it's doing on any DVD. It should have died with VHS.

I agree 101%. However me being the insane completist geek that I am, even the really bad stuff has a home in my collection.

You gotta take the rough with the smooth hence the latest addition to my collection MTV - Star Wars vs the alien Celebrity Deathmatch, to go with the the abc Saturday Sneak Peek and Fun Fit Test with Tony Danza, See Threepio and Artoo Detoo I picked up the other week.

Back on topic, in my opinion for what it is worth, the pan-scan versions of Star Wars in all flavours have as much right to be preserved as any other version.

Anyone prepared to have a go at that has my full backing...............

"Failing that, how about a version comparing the 1977 and 1997, 1977 and 2004 and 1997 and 2004 versions, each on an alternate angle."

Dear sweet Jesus. you are ambitious! I don't think I have enough system memory for that!

A project of that size would be very ambitious but if something like that were possible, the people with the skills to do it read this forum.

As a self-confessed video editing idiot I consider all the current projects as ambitious, as would 99.9% of the planets population!!!

That lot should keep you busy for a night or two...............

I particularly like the pan-scan versions you are including. We did not even get a pan-scan 2004 version here in the UK.

As much as I love the ANH Split Screen, I would relish a version with the original crawl for the 1977 release.

Or how about a 3-way splitscreen?? The 1977, 1997 and 2004 versions on screen at once.
Failing that, how about a version comparing the 1977 and 1997, 1977 and 2004 and 1997 and 2004 versions, each on an alternate angle.

For this set, something like that would be the icing on the cake.

Idea & Info: The Definitive Stereo Mix
Time
I am not an expert at all in this field plus I am deaf in one ear so I am the last person to ask about stereo!!!!

However, my understanding of the different dialogue to which you refer is simply down to the different formats that the film was originally released in.

Go here to read more. (link borrowed from another thread)

I cannot say if the missing dialogue you refer to is a later addition or has it been removed at a later date.

From the link above............

Ben Burtt recalls: "Because we were always trying to make the film better and better and fix things that were not right, there was some 'sweetening' done; things like different Stormtrooper or C-3PO lines, additional sound effects, or some different ADR."

Now I have said my bit, I will wait for the experts to have their say and they really know their stuff!!

Good luck in BOTH of your quests!!

You can add me to that list of people too.........

Back to the MONO mix issue, you already have the dificult to find MONO mix on the DVD you have and I am sure that you can soon get Moth3r's MONO mix from one of many people around here.

I too have Moth3r's MONO file converted from FLAC to WAV but I do not have the original FLAC file.

I would struggle to upload it but I could snail-mail should you wish.

It is also impossible to forget the original "EditDroid" ANH (NOT the commonly available second version) which also has a MONO soundtrack amongst others.

As stated somewhere in a previous post, neither of the known MONO sountracks are perfect but, in theory, both versions in the right hands could be combined to produce a single as near perfect as possible MONO mix.

The prototype MONO XP77:4EB, based on the video of the second "EditDroid" ANH with original crawl is certainly a massive step in the right direction.

Tis strange but true..........

Whilst news.cable.ntlworld.com was virtually 100% down over the past 2 weeks, the news.virgin.net was getting 90% of headers.

Earlier today, ntl was only getting headers back to the 2nd March and the Virgin server was getting headers back to 24th February.

I know there have been major problems and they may take time to catch up on that server.

If anyone is still unsure about what is available on Usenet in the newsgroups, I suggest spending 5 minutes over at Newzbin which is a Usenet search engine.

For example, this link tells you roughly what is actually available on alt.binaries.starwars and this link shows what is available if the words "star wars" are typed into the search field.

I also have another tip for those UK based ntl customers that I know come here.

The ntl servers have been rubbish lately and have come back to form in the last day or two but thier retension at the moment is lousy.

For some reason, if you use news.virgin.net instead of the usual ntl server, it works, its free and the retension is far better.

This may have been a stop-gap arrangement during the ntl server problems so it may not last.........

The "Dr. Gonzo" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
Many Internet Service Providers do provide free access to the Usenet newsgroups.

Mine is not very reliable at the moment so I signed up for a pay as you go service.

In my case it was $25 for 65Gb which would get you most of what I mentioned earlier.

Try Astraweb and see what they have to offer.

As well as alt.binaries.starwars, there are many other newsgroups as well.

The "Dr. Gonzo" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
"alt.binaries.starwars" is a newsgroup on Usenet where people post binaries (files) for others to download.

In the last few months the Dr Gonzo Trilogy has been posted there along with the Supplemental disk.

Also posted has been the Wookie Groomer SplitScreen Trilogy, the TR47 Trilogy, the Row47 Trilogy, various Holiday Specials, The Forgotten scenes, the documentary When Star Wars Ruled The World, Making of a Trilogy 1 and 2, The Muppet Show, The Clone Wars and the EditDroid ANH.

Not forgetting numerous comics, books, e-books, audio books, pictures, mp3 files, avi/mov/mpeg files, artwork, disc covers and games........

Promised shortly is the Dr Gonzo Trilogy (again) and the GKar SE Trilogy.

To answer your original question for others, you need to highlight the newsgroup you want to update and either click the button named "Get New Headers in Selected Groups" near the top left of the screen or click Online and in the dropdown menu click "Get New Headers in Selected Groups".

This is a very common problem that people have at first.

These groups are usually updating all the time as new things are posted and old things get deleted off your particular server.

This set was bad - REAL bad, I had a friend buy them and send me copies on an extrernal HD then 4 blank DVD's later.... I've deleted them off the HD.

I also was really stoked to get these DVD's but they were even a bigger let down then the Official DVD's so I've even removed them from my list.

Reading the above, I don't think he has them anymore although I will ask him just in case he didn't bin the discs.................

Prototype Mono Pre-ANH "XP77:4EB" Edit (Released)
Time
If you have since had the time to read that thread thoroughly, you will see that "The Creators" have accepted that that version of the original trilogy (now called the "EditDroid" version) is now in the open and is being bistributed both as a torrent and on the newsgroups.

ANH has already been posted and the other two films will probably follow shortly.

However, there are two versions of ANH. The version with the screenshots that have been posted here as well as an earlier version with 3 soundtracks, including mono.

If it is this mono version you have, you own a copy of the holy grail, the missing link that many are seeking.........................

By the way, I love what you are doing with Deleted Magic. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing it finished .

Things are a wee bit quiet around here at the moment so here goes nothing...................

Firstly, my apologies for raking up the past but, purely for review/comparison purposes, does anyone still have copies of this set.

As part of a much wider project on the whole Star Wars DVD topic to help people distinguish between different versions, I believe that this is a valid set to include in the research I am doing.

Firstly because it is almost certain that people have paid good money for this set and I hope to be able to help them identify this set and compare to other versions.

Secondly because it answers the question "Why the hell is XXXXXXXXX spending YYYY hours and £/$ZZZ on a Laser disc to DVD conversion? Why not simply copy a laser disc onto a DVD using a DVD recorder, cos that will do the same job"

If anyone thinks I am mad, I am English so I probably am.........................

STAR WARS: The Torrents thread
Time
Par2 files are posted as well as the actual set of rar files.

Should any files be missing or corrupt, in this case up to 10% of the rar files can be recovered using the par2 files and a program called QuickPar.

The Row47 ANH posting had 86 rar files so 8 (10%) missing or corrupt files can be repaired using the par2 files.

This really does work................

A bit of news from over at alt.binaries.starwars

As well as posting very high definition covers, disc labels and inserts for the set dubbed the "Mysterious Mysteries" edition, "The Creator" had this to say.............

"It's had this awful name for at least a couple of weeks, so I don't know if it can be changed (you know how names can stick).

If I had my druthers, I would refer to our works under the name "EditDroid." I have no doubt that someday the rest of our stuff will
leak out, and we'd prefer that name be associated with them."

According to another post "EditDroid" was the original Lucasfilm name for the Avid system (whatever that might be???).
