Info Wanted: Original Red Dwarf?
Time

Hmmm, that's odd. According to the Red Dwarf site and this Australian store, the R4 DVDs feature the "un-remastered" episodes. As far as I can tell, only the Czech market features the re-mastered episodes.

Apparently, the Holland/Belgium release of Series 1 earlier last year was also the remastered version.

I picked up my ebay items and have checked out the very first remastered episode on VHS, side by side with the original version on the DVD.

I hate the "filmized" look of the remastered version but do not have too much of a problem with many of the other changes. The CGI ship looks OK and Holly looks much better in most shots.

I can see why the newer version pissed off the true fans but the casual viewer would not really notice, apart from that horrid "filmized" look to the whole thing.

Once series 1 to 3 are out in Holland on DVD, I will be buying all 3 just to get the remastered versions in DVD quality

Which I agree with 100%.

It does prove that the THX remastering in 1993/94 did actually do a bloody good job, albeit not perfect which is a shame!!

Movealong, are there also DL Versions of Episode IV and V from OCP?

There are only the SL versions of those two.

I have a few rough details of all the OCP releases here (although I really should get myself sorted out and add all the rest of the details of the releases).

Also, did I read somewhere about an OCP Star Wars Auditions DVD too??

Info Wanted: for Cowclops v. 2 Star Wars...
Time
I have not done any promoting for a long time so here goes.

Because I was as confused as hell when I first started on this Original Trilogy on DVD thing over 18 months ago, I started logging all the different versions with their respective screenshots to help me out.

It was then suggested that this be put together as a webpage.

It differentiates between OT and SE as well as including many of the Edits and Extras DVD's. The Cowclops' v. 2 is listed.

My initial aim was to help out one person and save them blowing a fortune (up to $200 at the time) on ebay. That aim was achieved a long time ago so anything else is a bonus.........

Are there any other transfer projects out there being worked on that we do not yet know about???

The biggest missing link is the CED trilogy. Has anyone any plans for that???

Now that looks very nice indeed.

As you know from previous discussions, I am not usually into the whole cover thing but that one does stand out above many that I have seen here in recent times.

I am now looking forward to the next 3 to be shown here too.........

If you could send me your menu shots without the watermark, I will add to the GTF pages if you wish.

Out of pure curiosity, if this is your third OT transfer, what are the other two and what has made you decide not to release them???

I have to say though, the first issue US set is not that great, looks very old and sounds it too,but hey like Russ said at least it is preserved now

I was not expecting DVD quality and the aim of this project is being achieved so I am a happy chap.

Do not forget that SW and ESB on this set have the original pre-digital sound and are speeded up by 4% so they will sound a bit rubbish.

Anyway. We'll see.

This is why there is a single layer version. Which most of you will be getting. If I send the dual layer data on two discs, it will NOT be readable in your DVD player directly.

Chapter selection for these discs is identical to the 2004 official releases, for reasons which ought to be obvious.

Okay, I've thought about the dual layer thing.

Guys, I'm broke. My bank account is overdrawn. I can't afford dual layer discs.

And most people will be getting the single layer anyway.

What I'm thinking is - if I get enough people asking for the dual layer before the disc is released, and I can sustain the demand, I'll see about buying a stack of dual layer discs.

Hm.

Just a suggestion but why not let the rest of us take the pain and pay for this?

If you were to send 3 (or less) copies (SL or DL) to the Newsgroupers, Spleeners and Pif'ers that would cover 100% of the people who want to see this version you have created at minimum cost to yourself. (I know of one Spleener that could get this off the Newsgroup and posted faster than the mail could deliver!)

All 3 methods work perfectly and everyone here can use at least one of the methods.

I would suggest the same to anyone else doing any project. If someone has done the hard work, why should they pay to let others see it????

Nice and simple with no introduction or hype needed.........

Just the one set left to do and then the bulk of this project is done. A few more pieces of Star Wars history will now live forever........

Grinder now has his own thread about his two PAL projects so please keep checking there for progress. I am looking forward to those, particularly the PAL First Issue set which has never been done before (to my knowledge!).

Info Wanted: What are the Best OT Laserdisc Transfers?

It really depends what you are looking for..............

PAL or NTSC?
A straight transfer or through filters and modified?
Widescreen or Fullscreen?

Living in the UK, the Moth3r and Citizen PAL transfers are very good. The recently announced set by Grinder looks very promising too.

For NTSC, if you had either the EditDroid set, either TR47/Cowclops set, the Dr Gonzo set, the IsoMix set or any of the Dark Jedi sets you would not be dissapointed.

None are perfect but all have their strong points and are worthy of a look.

Kinda frustrating isn't it!?!?!?

Maybe there should be a PRESERVATION forum around here and we could discuss preservation projects in there.........

Oops, there already is, you posted there but not many people seem to give a damn!!!!!!!!!

The Golden Rule is that if you are interested in doing any form of preservation, you are doing it for yourself and possibly a few pals who help you along the way.

Please stick with it and show us what you can do. I am right behind you.

I am only familiar with US releases, but it sounds to me like they just continued to release the original transfer instead of the updated one. Are these releases the same as the ones that preceded them?

I too suspect that the old version was simply re-released despite the "new" version with the Digital Sound. I have yet to get my hands on any tape older than 1987 so I cannot comment.

One hope is a project in the pipeline of the 1982 UK PAL Star Wars LaserDisc which I cannot wait to split-screen test alongside the later versions.
