Info: More ANH soundmix discussion (remasters & French dub)
Time
I hope that you have more luck than I had when I tried starting a similar discussion.

Star Wars

(1) 1977 35mm two-track Dolby Stereo (as available up to 1985 CAV LaserDisc - captured)
(2) 1977 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo (never available but re-created by the EditDroid team)
(3) 1977 35mm mono. (available from UK ITV VHS tape or 1977 bootleg tape - captured)
(4) 1985 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on 1987 Special Collection and 1992 Pan/Scan LaserDisc - captured)
(5) 1993 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on Definitive Collection onwards - captured)

The fly in the ointment is the 1987/88/89 UK VHS Fullscreen tapes that you would expect to have the 1985 digitally remastered mix with the tractor beam line from the mono mix added. That line is missing so I am unsure what the mix on these releases is.

I cannot comment further at the moment and have no knowledge of the French audio.

Idea: sharing the Isolated Music Tracks

Looking back at this thread, DVDDecrypter in IFO mode can be used to get the soundtracks from a DVD. I vaguely remember following those instructions to Mono my Moth3r ANH.

Also, do not forget the isolated score on the EditDroid set either.........

<em>SIX</em> fantastic brand new preservation projects..... (Released)
Time
I have read a few comments over the years that the Jap version was suposed to be technically better than the US version.

All I can find for the 1994 version is.....

Unlike the US edition, the commentary track on this edition is isolated to Channel 2/R. This allows the film soundtrack to be presented on Analog Channel 1/L - maintaining compatibility with all LaserDisc players.

and the 1995 version.....

The commentary track on this edition is presented in the original English on Analog Channel 2/R. and in the Japanese translation on Analog Channel 1/L.

They are certainly a colourfull bunch of covers.........

However, my favourite is the US Faces sets which I might just heve to invest in.

I think that the 1995 ones have been used but not sure about any others.

The offer still stands to scan any of these if required.

Obviously the first two ced releases of star wars and empire strikes back are one ced disc so they were stretched to fit the time limit so they are inferior to the standard play lasers unless you are a completist.

That being said I wish you luck in all your endeavors. I still would like to see transfers of the 8mm digest versions of the trilogy and the full and widescreen 8mm features, the beta releases, the ced releases the 16mm and 35mm theater prints. None of the 75mm release prints exist too bad because they are the ultimate collector's item to do a transfer from.

I just got my japan definitive collection boxset in the mail, Has anyone ever done a transfer of this one besides the fact of the annoying japanese subtitles which cannot be removed?

I purchased it because someone who collects laserdiscs told me the quality was better than the american release.

so I have that opened but unused, and the executor u.k. set opened but unused. Now I just need the equipment and nowhow on how to make my own legal backups.

As far as I know, there are no transfers of the CED discs. The assumption is that Jedi is the full 132 minutes which is confirmed here. I hope that the equipment to do your own transfers comes your way soon enough.......

The answer to your PM is YES. Send another with a valid e-mail address.

Don't be so sure. We're working on that project right now.

Isn't that with the earlier Special Collection?? I suppose that the principle of removing the subtitles will be the same........

Anyhow, a "heads up" if anyone is up for it, is an ebay auction for both Ewok movies on LaserDisc.

Doing something with these titles is not something that interests me but someone else may fancy a go........

I am not technically minded but I do recognise quality when I see it.

On my new 42" telly, all of these look bloody fantastic!!

The release of the mono mix was also a stroke of genius too. I grafted that on with the original stereo mix and it is a near perfect combination.

[on a side note, the original theatrical stereo soundtracks for each film are being captured from LD as we speak if you were interested in releasing more alternative soundtracks.]

Star Wars Standard Play Collection

Well in everyone involved - good to know that all the differing laserdisc footage out there is backed up onto dvd and obtainable for those who want it.

That was our idea all along. It may not be in Widescreen THX glory but it is all we had for a very long time............

There is also plenty more coming too from PAL VHS.

and you my friend are going to get them whether you want them or not,i know where you live.

I do want them and thankfully you do know where I live. The First Issues should be with you soon.

However, some of the earlier releases have not yet been captured (that I know of). They are:-

Star Wars

1982 Pan and Scan CLV, CX Stereo, 1 disc, Extended Play, Time compressed to 118 mins, 20th Century Fox Video - an ebay auction for this has now been won
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/sw_ld1.jpg

1985 Pan and Scan CAV, CX Stereo, 3 discs, Standard Play - an ebay auction for this has now been won
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/sw_ld9.jpg

1989 Widescreen CLV, CX Stereo, 2 discs, Extended Play with "incredible shrinking ratio", CBS/FOX
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/sw_ld3.jpg

1992 Widescreen CLV, CX Stereo, 2 discs, Extended Play with fixed "incredible shrinking ratio", Fox Video - an ebay auction for this has now been won
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/sw_ld10.jpg

The Empire Strikes Back

1984 Pan and Scan CLV, CX Stereo, 1 disc, Extended Play, Time compressed to under 120 mins
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/esb_ld1.jpg

1985 Pan and Scan CAV, CX Stereo, 3 discs, Standard Play - an ebay auction for this has now been won
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/esb_ld6.jpg

1989 Widescreen CLV, CX Stereo, 2 discs, Extended Play
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/esb_ld2.jpg

Return of the Jedi

1986 Pan and Scan CLV, CX Stereo, 2 disc, Extended Play
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/rotj_ld1.jpg

1990 Widescreen CLV, CX Stereo, 2 discs, Extended Play
http://www.davisdvd.com/images/starwars/rotj_ld2.jpg

In there are the 1977 and 1980 theatrical audios for Star Wars and Empire, the first US release of a Widescreen edition, Star Wars compressed to 118 minutes and Star Wars with the "incredible shrinking ratio" problem - all worthy candidates to be preserved.

My question is, does anyone have any of these discs and would they be willing to mail them away to be captured and preserved. Dark Jedi is on board with this should there be any interest.

I have already put my money where my mouth is as I will be buying the Empire CAV disc just for the 1980 theatrical soundtrack as well as offering with some of the costs. I am also watching a few auctions for other discs too, including the Special Widescreen Edition (with "incredible shrinking ratio" on Star Wars).

Dark Jedi thinks that there may not be much interest in this but I hope there is. Who is right and who is wrong????

All of these titles have now been secured and are either in the hands of or on the way to the expert........(In the case of the Special Widescreen Edition, there are two experts)

Dark Jedi was right as there has not been a fantastic response to this possible project but my thanks go to everyone who has posted here and to those who have PM'ed and e-mailed.

There may be new threads for each of the individual projects as and when they happen so look out for those and I look forward to seeing whatever Dark Jedi, Rikter and Grinder release.

Bye for now..............

[Should skyjedi2005 happen to read this, please drop me another PM but this time with an e-mail address. Thanks for showing an interest.]

Curious to see which of the three known variants of Supplemental Material you've got ... or maybe a fourth!

Are we talking massive differences like different/better content or different menu's or is it small things like variations in the ifo/bup files.

Rowman's 3 disk Supplemental set has 3 versions which have different menu's on all 3 versions and much more and improved content on the latest set. Is the Dr Gonzo Supplemental Material as distinctive???

Apart from the First Issue Empire, all the discs mentioned in this thread have now been secured.

I for one am lookng forward to seeing what Dark Jedi and Rikter can produce and how these releases compare to the later THX releases.

Dark Jedi is also doing the 1997 SE Fullscreen VHS to finish the set.......................

All we need now is for someone to get hold of the CED Videodisc versions of Star Wars and capture those.

I started to upload when my PC locked up.

I re-booted and tried again and it will not let me replace the part upload that is there.

If you clear it, I will start again.

Isn't this how we first met back in the Deleted Magic days??

EDIT: Forget that - I renamed the original file and am uploading again now................

I have about 50 discs to copy and send out as it is but I am sure I can fit in a trilogy (or 3 discs) apiece to the first 2 to PM me with a valid e-mail address stating what they would like from Santa.

Just about any DVD5 discs from the top link below are available. The Five Star set will not copy.

EDIT: That is me done for the moment. If I get through my backlog, I may be able to offer again.............

This almost looks anamorphic. Is it only squeezed like this in this scene?

This is one of the only scenes where this happens. Most of the rest are very much pan and scan.

This 1988/89 fullscreen version gets weirder by the day.

First of all, it looks like this version.....

Despite popular belief, this was not the only transfer made of Star Wars. At some point, a second fullscreen video transfer was created from a 16mm flat print source. Since an anamorphic (2.35:1) 35mm print had been reduced down to a flat (1.33:1) 16mm print, this 16mm source featured different pan & scan decisions made during the print reduction. One main difference in this transfer was that Luke's macrobinocular POV shot of the Banthas was squeezed to actually show the Tusken Raider walking to the side of the frame. This video transfer was only shown on HBO and was never offered for sale or rent

Secondly, the audio is not the 1985 remastered version due to the missing tractor beam line.

I will be getting hold of the LaserDisc from 1982 and 1985, both pre re-mastering so I will then compare the 1988/89 audio against those versions to see if they match or are different again.
