Idea: Theatrical PT Preservation... Any takers?
Time
Here is a link I missed earlier.

It would be nice to see the theatrical versions of each film. I doubt that the early Darth Maul death scenes will ever be found except on a bootleg CAM. Likewise, with AOTC as that is the only source I know of for the different scenes. The trouble is that even near perfect CAM's and Telecine transfers are nothing like as good as DVD.

The only hope is that decent source material is located.

Info: Does Anyone Have The Old Original Theater Bootleg '77 Tape? (Released)
Time
This release by The Starkiller is fantastic.

The original source is really crappy as we all know but this transfer looks to me to be as near as possible to the VHS as we will ever get.

The menu option to go direct to the main mono mix differences is a master stroke.

The highlight for me is the DVD ROM content which includes "The Starkiller's Guide to the Mono Sound Mix". This compares the differences between the mono and the stereo found on the 1982 NTSC LaserDisc - which is as near to the original 1977 theatrical mix as we will ever get.

This guide is just brilliant!!!!

For each difference, there is a brief screenshot and the option to play the mono or stereo version. All the well known diferences are there along with many more that I have never noticed.

This guide is the only guide you will ever need to the mono mix and it demands to be uploaded to a website somewhere to be seen by all. In fact, please consider this a request to The Starkiller to do this. I am sure that a home could be found at the Galactic Trade Federation if needed..........

Is this on DVD and avalible?

Please read the thread. This footage has just been captured.........

.........and will be back with you by the weekend! I just have the other "extra's" I mentioned to sort out.

Now you have the tapes back, what are your impressions of the footage?? Is VHS to DVD recorder of a high enough quality or could more quality be squeeeezed out of the VHS using a PC capture card?

The other important issue is the soundtrack. Any thoughts there??

Below is a list of the star wars read along books that I will be scanning, may be more to follow but that all I could find. Once scanned I will most likely be posting to alt.binaries.starwars. Any questions please feel free to contact me at worf58@hotmail.com

Star Wars (33 1/3 rpm version)
Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back (Tape Cassette version)
Star Wars Return Of The Jedi (33 1/3 rpm version)
The Ewoks join The Fight (33 1/3 rpm version)
Planet Of The Hoojibs (33 1/3 rpm version)
Star Wars Droid World (33 1/3 rpm version)

and lastly a non star wars release

Indiana Jones Raiders of The Lost Ark (33 1/3 rpm version)

I am looking forward to seeing these scans. As I have said all along, I think a DVD with the scans and HQ sound we now have would be excellent.

Info & Offer: 1984 CBS Star Wars - could it be of any help to anyone?
Time
If possible, could you check out the Luke macrobinocular shot just as he gets attacked by the Tusken Raider.

I have some screenshots here of various UK/US tapes/laserdiscs including an early mono UK broadcast and this shot changes for different versions. How does this version compare.

Also, is it the mono version?? ie does it have the C3PO tractor beam line or the "Close the blast doors" line which were on the mono version. The early 80's UK broadcast was the mono version.

TV Recordings of Star Wars Films

I have a VHS recording of Star Wars when it was shown in 1985, I think, with the introduction by Mark Hamill. This was my copy of Star Wars that I had most of my childhood. I still think that when I get the hardware to do it, I'm going to capture it onto DVD for memories sake, being the version I grew up with. Didn't record any commercials, though.

I don't suppose that you are any nearer to doing that transfer are you?? I ask as I have just viewed the 1980's UK TV broadcast and found it to be a very different "cut" to the US and UK VHS and LaserDiscs that were out at the same time. It would be good to see if the US TV broadcast was any different to the 3 currently known versions.

BTW, the sample you posted has the fields in the wrong order - I don't know if this is your DVD recorder or something you did to the file afterwards. But it's an easy problem to fix if JD wants to re-encode to put it on a single DVD.

I am not quite sure what you mean there......

For what it is worth, this is what I had to do. For some reason, I cannot copy any disc made by my DVD recorder. I have tried all formats and loads of brands. I have to copy the VIDEO_TS file from the DVD to the HDD and burn it from there with Nero. The sample was done using DVD Shrink. Does that answer any questions??

Russ, in what format does your dvd recorder record the audio? Is it PCM, mpeg 2 audio, ac3 or something else.

It looks to me to be in MPEG 2.

I realise that using a standalone DVD recorder is far from the best way of capturing VHS but for me it will have to do for the moment.

I have just made a discovery that emphasises that this is not just another transfer like all the rest.

Firstly, it has the mono soundtrack with the C3P0 tractor beam line, close the blast doors etc

Secondly, I believe this to be a totally different "cut" of the film to the one released on VHS and Laserdisc.

The shot that shows this is Luke's macrobinocular POV shot of the Banthas with the Tusken Raider walking to the side of the frame.

The "Full length" NTSC version shows the view in the middle of the macrobinoculars with no Tusken Raider.

The early "Time Compressed" NTSC version and PAL version shows the macrobinocular squeezed into the frame and the Tusken Raider.

This ITV broadcast shows a completely different view..............

As promised, here is a wee clip of the ITV broadcast done at the 1 hour maximum quality setting. I personally cannot tell much difference between the 1, 2 and 3 hour settings but the quality is there should JD need it.

EDIT - I have changed my mind. On a 42" Plasma telly, the 2 and 3 hour modes are garbage and only the 1 hour mode looks OK.

Having got a handfull or rar files and done the old "rename a rar as a vob file and open it in PowerDVD" trick, I have to agree that it does appear to have turned out damn well!!

I just have to wait for 90 odd more files to arrive now!!!!!!!!!!!!

Star Wars: The Interactive Video Board Game (1996, Parker) (* unfinished project *)
Time
Even as we sit here staring at our computer screens, a raw VHS to DVD recorder *.vob of this video is heading across the Atlantic to the US to a well known author of the "not-so-well-known" Star Wars material and prolific poster of all things Star Wars on alt.binaries.starwars

I have no idea what this person will do with this video - if anything.

Meanwhile, here are a few screenshots.
