If new tracks are going to replace the captures from before, then they deserve to be heard at their best.  If need be, I may be able to help out with this.  ;)

Agreed!!

So far, I summarise as follows

Star Wars

1977 Mono - Reconstruction by Belbucus

1977 Stereo - High quality analogue capture by Belbucus ex Full Screen CAV Standard Play (1130-84) LaserDisc in standard and remastered at "reference level" versions.

1985 Stereo Remix - "ripped" by Mallwalker ex 1130-85

1993 THX Stereo - ex GOUT or 93 LD's. LD versions ex Definitive Collection done by Belbucus. Not sure if "ripped" or captured.

The Empire Strikes Back

1980* Theatrical Stereo - Current available analogue capture ex 1425-84 of unknown origin (to me). New HQ version prefered.

1985* Stereo Remix - No known GOUT synced capture or rip ex 1425-85/JSC currently available. New "ripped" copy required.

1993 THX Stereo - ex GOUT or 93 LD's. LD versions ex Definitive Collection done by Belbucus. Not sure if "ripped" or captured.

The Return of The Jedi

1983 Theatrical Stereo - "ripped" by Mallwalker ex 1478-80 (which is the same as 1478-85)

1993 THX Stereo - ex GOUT or 93 LD's. LD versions ex Definitive Collection done by Belbucus. Not sure if "ripped" or captured.

*If these two ESB mixes are indeed the same but analogue or Digital Sound being the difference, surely the 1985 Digital Sound "ripped" ex 1425-85/JSC would be the best quality version available as the Theatrical mix? I would still opt for both for total and utter completeness!!

*I believe all the 1985 Stereo Remixes were also on the Japanese Special Collection LD's as well.

Thanks

Sorry but only just spotted this..........

Based on the theory that for ROTJ, all released mixes before the Definitive Collection were the same, 1478-80 and 1478-85 should be identical.

Therefore, from your list above, you are only short of the Theatrical analogue mix from ESB 1425-84 and the Digital Sound mix from ESB 1425-85 or the JSC.

The other officially released mix not on the list above is the 1977 Star Wars Theatrical stereo mix you already have (ex Full Screen CAV Standard Play (1130-84) LaserDisc). Are you happy with the quality of the version you have or would you want a new capture/rip or whatever it is you do to get the best quality possible of an analogue mix? From what I recall, Belbucus released a basic stereo mix from this LD as well as a "remastered at reference level" stereo mix and I assume it is one of these you have used on your V1, 2, and 3.

Right or wrong, I have always assumed - mainly from reading the three links I posted earlier - that the 1985 ANH and ESB CAV Standard Play LD's was the original mix and that the new 1985 mix was the Digital Sound first heard on the JSC.

IF the1985 ANH and ESB CAV Standard Play LD's were the 1985 mix and all previous US NTSC LD's were time compressed then there is no proper full length source of the 1977 and 1980 Theatrical Stereo mixes. I do hope this is not the case.......

Edit - the ANH CAV Standard Play does not have the famous "tractor beam" line that was added to the 1985 mix whereas the Digital Sound releases do have that line - indicating that the 1985 CAV is the original mix.

As for the other mixes you're looking for, I have all of those ld's, but the 1980 empire disc (1425-84) is analog only, and time compressed, so that cannot be "ripped" per se.

I do not have the ld's so am no expert but according to all the usual sites, YES the 1425-84 ld is analogue only but at 125 minutes long, it is not compressed. Many apologies if I am wrongly informed.

Did anyone ever decide to capture the 1985 mix of ESB? Was the only difference to this changed levels?

Bumping this question again. Has anyone captured and synced to the GOUT the 1985 Digital Sound from the 1986 Japanese Special Collection (SF148-1242), 1989 Special Widescreen Edition (1425-85) or 1992 Full Screen Digital Sound (5652-80) LaserDiscs?

Out of sheer curiosity I plan to do a 1980 in channel 1 and 1985 in channel 2 side by side mix just to hear this for myself. If anyone has done this or is halfway there, I am interested to see how they are getting on.

The GOUT mixes are all from 1993, so they don't need to be in a separate category.

One other thing: while I can't state this with absolute certainty, I'm pretty sure that there were no 1985 remixes for ESB or RotJ.  With no content changes, and the total sound being so similar, I think the theatrical stereo tracks were used for all home releases up until 1993.

I have already thought about adding the GOUT as a source of the 1993 mix. DONE

Agreed too about the 1985 remixes of ESB and ROTJ. All I know for certain is that ESB went to Digital Sound at this time and to me, that alone is enough of a difference to list it seperately - even if it is the same mix.

I have updated the original post as follows. I hope the wording is to everyone's liking.......

Dialogue Difference 5 29:46

When R2-D2 is being loaded into Luke's X-Wing, C-3PO says an extra "and" before saying "do take good care of yourself.". However, in all the pre-SE mixes, the extra "and" is actually there but cannot be heard under normal listening conditions. In the SE mix and beyond, the extra "and" is very clearly heard.

and Lando's line "We're sure in the middle of it now"

are in the original theatrical mixes and in their '93 THX remastered tracks, those lines are just mixed lower in volume compared to other mixes.

I have heard that said before. All I know is that in my initial research I never heard the extra "and". Likewise, I have just re-checked over a dozen pre-SE transfers and heard no extra "and".

I will look more into that Lando line another time.......

The Definitive - tractor beam - Close the blast doors - Blast it, Biggs/Wedge - you don't taste very good - Noooooo!!!" - Preservation Guide.
Time

The differences in the dialogue spoken in the original three Star Wars films has always fascinated me and about 5 years ago I began listening to the various different "mixes" I heard of each film with a plan to do a single point of reference posting for all to see. Having briefly borrowed the Blu Ray release, my journey is complete.

There are gaps - various 8mm, 16mm, and 70mm - that I have not heard and I also now plan to cross-reference the differences I have highlighted with the same lines from the novels, original ReadAlongs, Special Edition ReadAlongs, the Marvel graphic novels, the Special Edition graphic novels as well as the Radio Drama's. I will add those to this post as and when I get around to it. I also need to finish the actual available sources for each mix - ie time compressed LaserDiscs and various VHS releases.

I have only chosen actual dialogue differences and not just different "takes". I have also avoided any of the Special Edition(s) added scenes. If anyone thinks that any other lines deserve a mention, please feedback and I will consider it.

The times given are from the NTSC GOUT which seemed to me as the most commonly available reference source.

I've not seen the squeezed macrobinocular shot in any of the early home video transfers, only in the "HBO version".

That shot is squeezed in the transfer used for the '82 CED and LD release, the '82 tapes and later Pan & Scan releases used a different transfer. So the info Mallwalker provided is probably true aside from the part that it wasn't offered for sale, the HBO broadcast would be interesting to have preserved as the CED and LD's were time-compressed.

I cannot confirm the 82 CED but have checked and agree with the above. I have also checked my PAL VHS tapes and the 82, 88 and 89 versions all have the squeezed macrobinocular shot - BUT - they too are at PAL speed which is equivalent to the time-compressed NTSC versions....

Wanted: Looking for the Original Trilogy 2006 US NTSC Full Screen Limited Edition DVD's with the GOUT as the bonus disc.

Can anyone out there help me out with this??

Here in the UK we never had any release on DVD of the Full Screen Pan and Scan versions of the Original Trilogy.

Consequently, as they are now being phased out, I am looking to get A New Hope at the very least as well as Empire and Jedi if they are available.

Has anyone copies for sale or can help me out in any other way?

Thanks

Russ

Thanks for finding that. :)

I too have seen this shot on my 1988 PAL VHS. as discussed here http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/PAL-VHS-Archive-Collection/topic/3829/  in posts 8 and 10. The pictures are long gone. Sorry. In fact I have seen 3 versions of this shot, a slice in the middle of the screen, a slice to left or right and the squeezed shot discussed here in this thread.

Similarly, I did a screenshot page to highlight changes in another shot of Fullscreen releases  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/gtf/swfull.html

Thoughts:

1. This thread might be better in the preservation/other forum. I'll move it.

2. Yes we definitely need an up-to-date list and summary of the various projects created by members of this forum.

3. The current lists at the top of each forum (eg here) quickly become outdated.

4. A wiki-style approach seemed like a good idea, it worked briefly on that dvdholocron site, but takeup of the ot.com/fanedits.com project wiki (here) was disappointing.

1. Agreed. You saved me having to PM you to ask!!

2. Agreed and the GTF pages are probably the best place to start/continue with.

3. Agreed as well but I know from experience that you can spend so much time doing this kind of thing, leaving no time to actually watch the films. I truly respect those who are putting in massive hours doing preservations and edits. I do not know how they do it!!

4. Wiki-style. There is an idea. The current site look was cute 6 years ago but looks very dated now.

Keep those ideas coming........

Miracle of miracles......

My (May 2005 original newsgroup download burned to those hideous Bulkpaq DVD's I used to send out!!!!!!) copy of the TB release is 100% OK and works a treat. All files now fully backed up on my HDD.

If all other requests to upload the TB release somewhere fails, I will gladly send my original discs out to someone if they can promise an upload to get this great DVD set back in circulation.

<em>SIX</em> fantastic brand new preservation projects..... (Released)

How bad am I?? I have forgotten so much that I had to Google my own webpage on the DJ releases just to work out what you guys are talking about!!

I have however come good as I ISO'd most of DJ's stuff years ago and DJ_SWE_Ep6 is one of those I did. Plus, I have them on media as sent by DJ and they are not on the wonderful BulkPaq discs that I inflicted the world with. You can have a copy if you wish.

Dark_Jedi &amp; ABC's - ESB: <em>IMPERIAL EDITION</em> - ART OF SCORING, <em>Restored Recordings against the B&amp;W GOUT</em> - JW &amp; LSO (Released)

A B C - please let me clarify my post.

It is the concept of a black and white silent version of ESB that was odd to me. I used the word "sounds" with a slightly different meaning - nothing to do with the superb quality of your restored soudttrack.

I also stated that I would like to see A New Hope and Return of the Jedi done with the restored soundtrack over a black and white silent movie. However, I have read that you have no plans to restore either of those soundtracks.

This is the address of a webpage I have did years ago that lists all of Dark Jedi's early work..... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/gtf/dvd/OTHERS/dj.html

Anyone out there still not sure about this one, I say to give it a bash as you will not regret it.

It sounds a bit odd at first but the black and white picture with only the musical score to accompany it really does work.

I have seen other black and white versions of Star Wars films as well as others with various Isolated soundtracks but this approach tops all of those.

Great work and I also agree that it would be great to see all 3 films done like this should anyone ever fancy having a go at doing them.

A few words for DJ - going back 5 years, you captured every US Laserdisc release, the Japanese Special Collection and a couple US VHS sets - 39 releases in total - and got a similar response then to the one you are getting now. That will never change but the drive to release something better or different will always be out there and all the work done by all is appreciated - even if people do not say so as often as they ought to......
