THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

I am a bit late to the party with this but if anybody has any use for a 1991 dated FOR PHILIPPINE HOMEVIEWING ONLY fullscreen VCD over two discs, let me know.

For what it is worth, I have always thought that the LD vs DC DVD versions as a splitscreen comparison would be brilliant. If I ever learn the skillz, I will give it a shot.

Speed up/slow down video and split screen questions.
Time

Fantastic. That works brilliantly. I have my video re-timed and the audio works with it too. Side by side in different programs, the two clips very roughly synchronise. StackHorizontal also works a treat and Trim makes them start at the same time. However.....

Question 3

Using StackHorizontal, clip1 runs at the correct length but clip2 now runs 6 minutes longer. I have tried various inputs to set it to the original 29fps for clip2 but with no luck. Here is the script. Any advice??

clip1=AVISource("LD.avi").Trim(310,0).AssumeFPS(28.2907, true)

clip2=AVISource("vhs.avi").Trim(200,0)

StackHorizontal(clip1, clip2)

Question 4

Is there a way to pause or add blank frames to either clip1 or clip2 throughout the film to allow the other clip to "catch up". With both files running side by side in different programs, the video syncs fairly well then drops out of sync at the end of certain scenes.

I assume I need to have the frame numbers for each file on screen and write some sort of pause or add script at certain frame numbers. I expect to need dozens of these and be able to do it to either clip.

Thanks again......

Info Wanted: ESB/ROTJ Audio Mix questions...

Back on topic of ESB pressings, I own these:
(chronological)
1425-84 = analog only
SF148-1242 = Special Collection (JSC)
1425-85 = Pioneer Video, Inc. (PVI)
1425-84 = re-issue by Mitsubishi with diGital SOUND added (*)
1425-85 = re-issue by Technidisc

(*) It has digital sound, but might also have CX-encoding applied, which would be a mastering error. Analog tracks often use CX, but digital shouldn't. So we would need some CX decoder software, if such a thing exist.

Stupid question time........

Like most other Star Wars Digital Sound releases, does the Mitsubishi 1425-84 have Digital and Analogue tracks?? If so, could the CX on the box simply refer to the Analogue track and not the Digital track?

Info Wanted: ESB/ROTJ Audio Mix questions...
Time

Whilst researching I have found out something which dis-proves something that I have believed for some time.

The 1992 Pan & Scan Digital Sound ANH (5651-80) and ESB (5652-80) are actually time compressed to under two hours so are not suitable canditates for "ripping" audio from as I have stated on more than one occasion. I will try and trace back my steps and remove any such posts. If only there was a website for all this audio stuff.......

Another thing, according to the LDDB, the Special Widescreen Edition and Japanese Special Collection have Digital and Analogue tracks. Out of interest, has anyone compared how these sound side-by-side??

but thanks for still looking into this, it is to bad there is no website for all this audio stuff LOL.

If ever there was a webpage, it is very likely that someone from around here would be the ones doing one.

My "The Definitive - tractor beam - Close the blast doors - Blast it, Biggs/Wedge - you don't taste very good - Noooooo!!!" - Preservation Guide." thread is a sort of prelude to doing such an article.

In fact, once the dust settles on the JSC issue and there was a genuine interest as well as somewhere decent to host such an article, I would be up for compiling something from all the "proven known" information out there.

It could even be expanded to list or mention of all the current and future NTSC GOUT synced mixes that are out there....

So can anyone else please verify that the info in this post is correct? Mallwalker do you know for sure?
I don't know for sure.

Trying to be helpful for once, I have tried doing some internet research to see if there is any resource out there that could help us answer this burning question. Unfortunately, the most popular hit is for my GTF page for your Dark/Sega Special Collection Transfer Project followed by numerous OT.com links!!

I will try again with some lateral thinking and see if I can come up with anything......

Speed up/slow down video and split screen questions.
Time

I have been doing some basic research lately on the different Pan & Scan choices made on the original 1982 Laser Disc and VHS retail releases of Star Wars. The most famous choice is the "squeezed" macrobinocular bantha shot on the Laser Disc version but not the VHS version.

I have recently resorted to playing the two versions on screen at the same time to compare them running but the Laser Disc version is time compressed to under two hours and the VHS is at normal time. Consequently my questions are.....

Question 1

I have done some crude time calculations based on the first time we see the Fox logo to the last credit leaving the screen at the end. Therefore I now know very roughly what percent  faster or slower the LD is to the VHS to a couple of decimal places. Is there any Windows freeware software that will easily allow me to speed up or slow down video by such percentages and save the file. Alternatively, is there another way of doing this that I am missing?

Question 2

If I can get the two versions running at the same speed, is there any Windows freeware software that will easily let me do a WookieGroomer style side by side split screen so that I can save the project as a single file - with or without sound? The "fantasy" final version of this would be to have one of the widescreen versions playing in the background with the two 1982 LD and VHS versions playing side by side in the foreground. I have done a quick mock up to show what I mean.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/gtf/dvd/images/mock%20up.jpg

Finally, if I get any where near making the above work, my ultimate ambition with video editing is to do THX-1138 v THX-1138 Directors Cut as another WookieGroomer split screen comparison. Again, I have done a few rough side by side comparisons many years ago and I believe that this could be a stunning project.

Back the the 1982 LD v VHS project, I have ripped the DVD files and have converted the files to various other formats such as avi and wav but I am now stuck on the "time compressed" issue.

Thanks and any help appreciated.

ESB 70mm Soundtrack - 1980 in-theatre recording (Released)
Time

Has anyone done or tried doing a GOUT synced 70mm ESB recording in 1 channel and either the the ESB Theatrical or 93 DC mix in the other as Belbucus did for the original Star Wars??

It was not brilliant quality but perfect for checking out those tiny differences. He did the same thing with ANH theatrical mono vs stereo which was simply brilliant!!

Wanted: Looking for the Original Trilogy 2006 US NTSC Full Screen Limited Edition DVD's with the GOUT as the bonus disc.
Time

I am finding multiple sellers (ebay.com) of these two disc Full Screen releases - still at reasonable prices - but they will only ship to the US and will not even accept messages to ask if they would help me out with UK postage rates!!

Very frustrating but I am still hunting around........

EDIT. I finally found a seller willing to mail to the UK so I have now won ANH. Just ESB and ROTJ to go

EDIT EDIT. ESB now on the way. Just ROTJ to go now.

Finally, Belbucus did rip (not capture) the '93 tracks. See here
IIRC hairy_hen and/or dark_jedi did find a glitch or two among them; nevertheless, I don't have any plans to rip my DC box.

Thanks for that link. I sort of remember that thread from years ago but never paid it much attention at the time - if any attention at all!! I so wish I had though as so many things make much more sense now......

HBO Star Wars preservations (a Work In Progress)
Time

Now that we have the proof a few posts back, how much of the often quoted paragraph from the former davisdvd.com web page about the original 1982 VHS/Beta release has been "mythbusted"??

"What You Didn't Know:  Despite popular belief, this was not the only transfer made of Star Wars. At some point, a second fullscreen video transfer was created from a 16mm flat print source. Since an anamorphic (2.35:1) 35mm print had been reduced down to a flat (1.33:1) 16mm print, this 16mm source featured different pan & scan decisions made during the print reduction. One main difference in this transfer was that Luke's macrobinocular POV shot of the Banthas was squeezed to actually show the Tusken Raider walking to the side of the frame. This video transfer was only shown on HBO and was never offered for sale or rent."

Yes, there are two different transfers (or at least different versions of shots from basically the same transfer??) most noted by the "squeezed" macrobinocular shot. However, as this shot was in the 1982 NTSC LD and all pre-THX PAL VHS pan and scan releases, the last line quoted is incorrect. I cannot comment on the 16mm flat print source statement.

(Once I get back my ITV broadcast DVD, I will post a picture of a third macrobinocular shot for info......)

That all sounds very easy, so I expect to see a dozen different "rips" available by the weekend......

Joking aside, that looks complicated and much respect for getting done what you have managed so far.

Belbucus spoiled us with the 1977 ANH Mono Restoration and the 1977 ANH Theatrical in High Quality from the analogue 1130-84 CAV LaserDisc. He also gave us the 93 mixes ex DC/Faces (are these "rips" or captures and how do they stack up against the GOUT audio??)

However, the Digital Sound mixes from the Special Widescreen Edition, 1992 Pan & Scan and the Japanese Special Collection have never really had the same treatment. Let's hope that the situation changes now after what you have started with your "ripped" 1130-85 ANH.

Back to ESB, do we now have conclusive proof that all pre-DC - analogue or Digital Sound - are the same mixes? If so, a rip of a Digital Sound LD must be better (I assume!!) than any analogue capture we can do so are you planning a "rip" of one of your amazing collection to add to your 1130-85TD ANH and 1478-80 ROTJ "rips". I may as well ask the other question - are you planning anything High Quality with the analogue 1425-84?? (I ask as I am still hoping to do my single mix of analogue v digital to finally prove that they are the same to myself.)

If not, does anyone else have the equipment, discs, time, knowledge, patience and inclination to have a bash at this. I have my fingers crossed hoping that they do.....

Sorry for asking more questions than I answered!!

I have had a quick listen to the raw "ripped bitperfect" audio from ANH 1130-85 and ROTJ 1478-80 and they sound truly amazing compared to their equivalent audio from various captured transfers and they sound truly amazing.

Those two along with ESB (if "ripped bitperfect"), converted and synced to GOUT would make worthy replacements for the existing sound files currently being used.

I'm pretty sure that in "A New Hope" when Han, Luke, Ben and the Droids are hiding under the floor in the millennium falcon, one of the Stormtroopers says "Theres no one here" in some versions but stays silent in others.

Added in 2004 and still in the 2011 Blu Ray.

As well as that line, a bit of research tells me that I also need to add "We’ve stopped!" and "He’s on your tail" to ANH and "This is it" to ESB. I will add these shortly when I have done all my checks.

Are there any others??

Info & Offer: Laserdisc, I have an X9 for use... if anyone wants to use it?
Time

The black trilogy box set is the Definitive Collection. The individual discs you have could be the Special Widescreen Edition or any of the Pan and Scan " time compressed" or standard time releases. The easiest site to find what you have is http://www.blam1.com/StarWars/

If you do have the Special Widescreen Edition as well as the Definitive Collection, I am sure there would be huge interest in an X9 transfer or two. There is also a possible project to get "ripped" audio from the Special Widescreen Edition and Empire Strikes Back is still on the wanted list.

You will not bee able to get any form of digital "rip" of the ANH 1977 Theatrical mix, but as hairy_hen said:

There are no digital copies of the '77 stereo mix on laserdisc.  Belbucus' analogue capture was made with very high quality equipment, so it's probably the best it's ever going to sound short of an official transfer from the master tape.

That mix is as good as we are going to get. However you could replace the following mixes if you wished......

1985 ANH mix using the "rip" recently posted by Mallwalker.

1980 ESB Theatrical mix if the Special Widescreen Edition/JSC were to be "ripped".

1983 ROTJ Theatrical mix using the "rip" recently posted by Mallwalker.

The ESB 80 Theatrical analogue I did, so it is already done, I would like to have the Digital PCM, then I will put that in sync, and I to would love to have the Digital PCM tracks ripped from the JSC, but who has them, and has the capabilities to rip bit-for-bit the audio?

And I totally agree with your bottom statement, but as hairy_hen, and ChainsawAsh, and others have pointed out, the 85 mix was not needed for ESB and ROTJ, that is why they were not included on my V3 DVD Set and my coming soon Blu-ray Set.

Does this mean that you are looking to use the Digital Sound mix from either the Special Widescreen Edition or JSC as a DIGITAL replacement for the ESB 80 Theatrical you already have?

Agree that there may not be much point in having them both on your Blu Ray release but instead use a far superior Digital mix in place of the currently available Analogue mix.
