Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread

Given the current organization of the site, sure this makes sense. But wasn’t it easier when there were fewer sub forums and we could just have fun in the random thoughts thread? I forgot it even existed until now!

You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done 😉

There are only two extra sub-forums on here since the re-organisation; giving the site a much-requested dedicated ‘Original Trilogy Discussion’ section in the process.

Apart from having this ‘Original Trilogy Discussion’ forum, and a forum for ‘Beyond the Original Trilogy’… everything else is pretty much where it was before - in the ‘General Star Wars Discussion’ section.

(And there is no way I’m going through and moving around 5000+ threads again - one by one… into their relevant site sections and then re-sorting & updating the various Index Threads etc 😃)

Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread
Time

Hey, I won £5. That was easy 😃

I imagine the idea of creating these threads were for newer and future members to also contribute in them too - as well for anyone to just post and engage in conversation with about these films.

Having a thread for each of the three classic films to ramble away in… seems a decent idea for a site that was built on getting an official release of / preserving said films - and there is now a dedicated discussion section for.

Yes, a lot has already been posted in the old General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread - which also contains some content from Star Wars releases that may not interest members who don’t like certain other aspects of the GFFA.

These are just for each of the Original Trilogy movies…

Kathleen Kennedy
Time

^ from the 2012 ‘Henry Thomas and Kathleen Kennedy Talk E.T. The Extra-Terrestial, Jurassic Park 4, Lincoln, Steven Spielberg, and More’ interview with the Collider website. (Found by Cobra Kai - here)

Interviewer: ‘When it came out on DVD, there was the special edition version that had some notable changes (walkie-talkies in the government agents hands instead of guns, sanctifying certain dialogue exchanges) but the Blu-ray reverts back to the original version. What brought about that decision?’

Kathleen Kennedy: ‘To be perfectly honest, I think Steven always regretted having made the decision to do anything to the film. I think he was feeling a certain amount of pressure to be politically correct. And then he realized that it maybe wasn’t the correct [decision]. I think most fans and most people who like classic movies that have stood the test of time, don’t want them to be tinkered with.

^ Wow. Yep, you got it absolutely spot on there, Kathleen…

And many of us would also just like to be able to have the option of buying and watching an official release of the old ‘untinkered with’ classic Original Trilogy movies on a quality modern digital format.

A few other OT•com thread re Kathleen Kennedy…

Diego Luna Says His ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Prequel Series Will Shoot This Year’:-

The bumph…

'Disney+'s next Star Wars series is still in the pipeline… but getting closer to launch.

Over a year after it was announced that Diego Luna will be reprising his role of Cassian Andor in a Rogue One prequel series, the actor says he’s gearing up to start filming this year.

“Yes, we are doing it. We are doing it this year,” he told ET while promoting season two of his Netflix series, Narcos: Mexico. _“It’s happening, and I’m getting ready for it.” _

Luna said he knows “very little” about what’s in store, but has read some scripts. “I’m really excited,” he shared.

“I can’t wait,” Luna said. “It is really cool to tell a story where you already know the ending.”

“It is a different approach because of the beauty and it’s how things happen. It’s not just what happens. It’s not the typical way of approaching a story. It’s about how things happen, which in fact, is the same that happened in Rogue One,” he continued. “You know the ending, but you don’t know how it happened, and we have that challenge in front of us again, which is exciting.”

Modern SE Revisionism
Time

To try and get this much overlooked and informative thread updated and back on track - in highlighting further examples of modern Special Edition revisionism - that has been espoused by Lucasfilm for far, far too long…

with a spot-on reply from doubleofive…

Possible ‘proof’ that Greedo was always meant to shoot (2020; more Paul Duncan errors; see Modern SE Revisionism for more)

A mini-index of dedicated OT•com threads on the subject of Han vs Greedo / Han Shoots First in Star Wars (2019 thread)

Category Number 37 of the George Lucas: Star Wars Creator, Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist… thread also has couple of examples, in the…

Buyer Beware: Lucasfilm authorised / released material indicating a certain era or time - may well contain Special Edition content inserted into it’ section of the ‘modern Special Edition revisionism’.

(as well as some other similar categories of interest too)…

Anyone know of any more examples of this continuing trend by Lucasfilm (or Disney)? Please list them up in here if so… 😃

Interesting to also note the statement within of…

“That’s right - Star Wars is forever. George Lucas and 20th Century Fox have plans for twelve more block-busting chapters to the Star Wars story. And Kenner will be with them.”

So… 13 episodes of Star Wars… were seemingly planned at that time.

I’ve included the above in an update to the George Lucas: Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist… thread (Category 2: ‘The Changing Number of Episodes in the Star Wars Saga…’)

Hi & welcome ECOFACT_,

There are a couple of threads you may be interested in - and contains the information you are after (including on how to send a PM etc):-

Welcome to the OriginalTrilogy.com; Introduce yourself in here + useful info within…

and the…

‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com - some info & answers to members’ queries

As well as taking your time in general to peruse the site - maybe with a focus on the Star Wars Preservation forum 😃

The About, Help, An OriginalTrilogy.com timeline thread, and General Assistance may also be of interest & help too.

and I completely agree with your post of…

“Being a buff of movie history and old films, I am thrilled to discover your efforts to preserve those first, three films❣️ To never experience those original movies, or see them on the big screen, is to deny the pioneering magic, innovations, and talents, which went into their creation‼️ How can the next generations of writers, composers, and filmmakers learn, if a film’s history is erased⁉️ Thank you for all your efforts❣️”

It has been now 25 years since there was a dedicated release for the classic version of the Original Trilogy films - far, far too long for groundbreaking and iconic film history to be suppressed.

After watching your video this was the main point of contention regarding the falcon gun special effect shot. I know you got that info from a wikipedia page that I feel is incorrect info and I don’t blame you for taking that statement at face value.

The link above describes the shoot out where Greedo comes to collect Jabbas money and they both get caught up with the stormtroopers. Greedo dies and Han escapes.

Kind Regards

I could see George thinking about changing when the Greedo scene happened and how it happened and getting something alternate, but I’m pretty sure that if this was filmed that it was never in any cut.

What you see in the finished film “is” this scene with the greedo / Rhodian character edited out.

The thread has been somewhat cleaned so it is now back to being about 13las’ video project on ‘The Lost Cut’.

Both the mods and 13las don’t want to see repeat of what occurred in here earlier - thank you.

I strongly suggest you pay heed to this - I don’t want to have go through all that we’ve been just been through again, and nor does anyone else.

Please feel free to post such claims and any others in your own ‘Lost Cut’ thread - but not in here - not without more substantiated evidence other than an assumed / ‘could have been’ scenario… thank you.

I hope you all enjoyed 13las’ Lost Cut video - and his project in here on it (without the false & disingenuous claims that it was something to do with the Prequels or other similar nonsense that descended into a mud-slinging match).

NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega

Hello,

I recently downloaded Star Wars BD25 and I mounted it on my computer to watch it before I burn it to blu-ray. Unfortunately I noticed on the menus there’s a green flickering line that runs across the entire top edge. I’m not sure which part of the process went wrong so I’m not sure how to fix the problem. Any advice would be very appreciated.

Just this morning I downloaded ROTJ and I encountered the exact same problem. Because of the consistency between the two films, I think it might be resolved once it’s burned to blu-ray. But then I also don’t want to put in the effort and money of burning it to blu-ray only to have the same green line pop up. I’m really not sure what to do now.

Another update, I downloaded TESB and got the same problem. I thought I can’t have replicated the exact same mistake 3 times in a row so I figured it must be a problem with either VLC Media Player or my laptop. I moved ROTJ over to my parents laptop and it played perfectly. I assume the other 2 will work fine as well.

I think I’m going to leave this post up so if anyone encounters the same problem then they can see this and hopefully fix it.

I remember having a similar problem a couple of years back… I think I corrected it by:-

Open the vlc media player, then click on ‘Tools’, then click on ‘Preferences’, and then click on the ‘Video’ icon.

Change the output from Automatic to Open GL video output, and then click Save.

(I think I may have had a play around with the ‘dropdown’ menu options below the ‘Automatic’ setting… to find which worked the best for me (for me, it was ‘Open GL video’ option).

Media Player Classic is a decent and free alternative to VLC player - it may be worth trying too.

Good luck with it mate - I hope it works.

Sooo … leave it as be?

I guess, given that people have pretty thorough arguments for why they like it. It’s obvious I’m in the minority, so I say leave it as be.

That’s probably a good idea… especially as:-

'A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners.

There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ is not.’

And people are getting annoyed that the Fan Edit and Preservation threads are containing Review/Opinion/Discussion posts about the films - and not the Edits / projects themselves.
