The Original Trilogy box set releases on home video tape: 1988 to 2000…
Time

Some basic info for the many various box set releases of the Original Trilogy on video tape from 1988 to 2000…

Hopefully this thread will be of some help for anyone who has a box set copy of the Original Trilogy on VHS (or Betamax!) and wants to know a little more about it - or is a little unsure of the origins of the release - and may require a little assistance in identifying it.

Also, that this thread may come up with a few unknown / rare variants of the Original Trilogy box sets out there - as most of the releases in here are likely to be from the US or UK. It’d be great to have some input and info included from some of the Australian & New Zealand, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Czech releases - and any other box set releases from countries around the world too.

1988 saw the the very first 3-film ‘set’ release for the Original Trilogy - though technically not a ‘box set’; as it was simply the three individual films wrapped together by a piece of card - and marketed as a ‘Trilogy 3-Pack’.

1995 saw an Original Trilogy box set release in Mexico - on the Betamax format.

2000 was the year the last home video tape box set release for the Original Trilogy (which contained the 1997 Special Editions).

Surprisingly, it would be another four years before a DVD set of the Original Trilogy would be released - with yet another bout of changes made to all three classic OT films for the 2004 DVD box set release (and with even more changes still to come in 2011 for the blu ray box set, and yet further alterations in 2019 for the 4K / UHD / Disney+ release)…

Just for clarity, this is a thread for ‘3-in-1’ box sets releases around the world - and won’t contain any information on the ‘single film’ releases of the Original Trilogy on home video tape - or the laserdisc box set releases (of which althor1138’s superb ‘Star Wars Laserdisc Preservations’ thread is a must-read for anyone interested in those).

More information on the many Original Trilogy releases for various other ‘older’ formats can be found in the…

Star Wars: Detours (animated series) - a general discussion thread (Unreleased)

Star Wars: Detours: Animated Series Finally Set to Release on Disney+ After 9-Year Purgatory’:-

https://www.thevulcanreporter.com/exclusives/star-wars-detours-disney-plus-release

From the article above…

‘While we do not know when Disney plans to release the series on its streaming service, we do know that around 52 episodes and specials have fully finished production. It is likely that Star Wars: Detours is planned as a surprise release on May 4, 2021.’

Probably best taken with a pinch of salt until verified elsewhere or officially announced - though good to see previously unreleased Star Wars content see the light of day (I think…)

The Original Trilogy on Betamax (Beta)
Time

‘Okay grandpa, just what is Betamax?’ - I hear some of you young whippersnappers ask…

Betamax (also known as Beta, as in its logo) is a consumer-level analog-recording and cassette format of magnetic tape for video, commonly known as a video cassette recorder. It was developed by Sony and was released in Japan on May 10, 1975.

The first Betamax device introduced in the United States was the LV-1901 console, which included a 19-inch (48 cm) color monitor, and appeared in stores in early November 1975. The cassettes contain 0.50-inch-wide (12.7 mm) videotape in a design similar to that of the earlier, professional 0.75-inch-wide (19 mm), U-matic format.

Betamax is obsolete, having eventually lost the ‘videotape format war’ to VHS. Despite this, Betamax recorders were not discontinued until August 2002. Betamax cassettes were available until March 2016, when Sony stopped making and selling them, alongside MicroMV.

^ information and image is taken from the Wikipedia article for Betamax - to which more in-depth info can be found in the link.

An introduction to the Original Trilogy on Betamax

Continuing on with some of the more obscure and oft-forgotten formats that the Original Trilogy saw releases for a long time ago… on CED, on VHD, on Video8, on V2000, on VCD, and on Super 8 formats…

Betamax.

Home taping…

1982 was the year Star Wars was released on home video (VHS, V2000 & Betamax) - a full five years after the release of Star Wars at the cinema.

VCRs did existed as far back as 1975 - and many people did ‘record’ the showings of Star Wars on TV onto a blank tape when the film was eventually aired on tv back in 1982 in the US (via PPV; something which only half a million people could access at the time).

Yet very few people had VCRs due to the considerable cost at the time - especially in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Later, the Trilogy was shown on US network TV - 1984 for Star Wars, 1987 for Empire Strikes Back, and in 1989 for Return Of The Jedi.

In fact Star Wars was still running at some cinemas in the US fourteen months after being released on home video (in 1982).

Official releases to rent or buy…

This was a time when rentals made up the vast majority of the videotape market, and it would be several more years before Star Wars was available to own at a price which many fans may have been able to afford (in 1982 to buy Star Wars on tape was circa $80, and a VCR could cost circa $600).

Not to mention that home video viewers were still only able to view more than half the picture that had been seen on cinema screens - as Star Wars was cropped (‘panned and scanned’) to fit the dimensions of 4:3 TV sets.

In the US and Europe…

Though Betamax was considered by many to be superior to VHS in quality, it lost out in the ‘format war’ - and the last release of Betamax for the Original Trilogy was in 1986 for Return Of The Jedi (in the UK & US). Betamax never saw a ‘box set’ or ‘3-film set’ release of the OT - as VHS did get in 1988 with the ‘Star Wars Trilogy 3-Pack’ set (links to a 22 minute video at the Nathan Butler youtube channel), and many other later VHS box sets in the US and Europe, that is…

Outside of the US and Europe…

However, there was a 1995 release on Betamax for the three Original Trilogy films… in Mexico - with the popular John Alvin artwork used at the time for the more widely available VHS releases. More info on this Betamax release can be found in the video linked to below in this thread.

There was also a 1995 Original Trilogy box set release for Betamax in Mexico…

There were also Betamax releases of the three Original Trilogy films for Mexico - back in 1988…

Anyone know what this Star Wars crawl title font is?
Time

I can’t quite remember for certain - though think for the first six Star Wars films it is a variant of ‘Franklin Gothic Medium Condensed’ (probably in ‘Bold’?). It is also sometimes known as the ‘Univers’ font?

For the Sequel Trilogy… I think it was changed to ‘News Gothic’.

The Original Trilogy on Super 8
Time

‘Okay grandpa, just what is Super 8?’ - I hear some of you young whippersnappers ask…

Super 8mm film is a motion picture film format released in 1965 by Eastman Kodak as an improvement over the older “Double” or “Regular” 8 mm home movie format.

The film is nominally 8mm wide, the same as older formatted 8mm film, but the dimensions of the rectangular perforations along one edge are smaller, which allows for a greater exposed area. The Super 8 standard also allocates the border opposite the perforations for an oxide stripe upon which sound can be magnetically recorded.

Unlike Super 35 (which is generally compatible with standard 35mm equipment), the film stock used for Super 8 is not compatible with standard 8 mm film cameras.

There are several varieties of the film system used for shooting, but the final film in each case has the same dimensions. The most popular system by far was the Kodak system.

Help: Looking for... The PAL VHS Archive Collection
Time

Mate, if a thread already exists for what you are looking for then please post in that thread - rather than creating new threads.

If everyone created a new thread for projects they are after which already have their own threads… we’d soon sink under the sheer number of threads like this - and the Trash section is already full of similar request threads.

Thank you 👍

Blu-rays included in 4k release same transfer?
Time

Hi dg91, please give the Fan Edit / Preservation Forum Rules and FAQ a read, mate.

You’ll need to own the official retail release to adhere to our rules if you are going to do a fan edit or two on here. We are not pirates - nor do we buy or sell rips of the official retail releases on here.

It may be worth checking ebay, charity / pawn shops, CEX, music magpie, and any online sales etc for a good deal on the 2020 AOTC & ROTS blu rays.

As of right now, the 2020 Skywalker Saga blu ray boxset is up on ebay UK for £39.62 - and there may also be deals for the AOTC and ROTS individually on there too (a very quick look has them available for around a £5er each).

Edit: CEX has the 2020 Skywalker Saga blu ray boxset for £35 (and when the physical shops open in the UK on the 12th April your local CEX may well be worth checking for individual discs as well).

Good luck with getting them - and for your edits too. 👍

Help with donations for an old member/friend?
Time

Hi You_Too,

I’m going to move this into ‘Star Wars Preservations’ a little later today - where it may get more traffic and attention (and also where more members likely remember your contributions on here over the years).

If you’d like me to move this thread back to ‘The Cantina’ just let me know.

Having read your and your mother’s plight I can only hope things will turns around for you both soon. All the positive waves coming your way 👍

You’ll always be appreciated on here.

MTFBWY.

Help: Looking for... VCD Preservations
Time

The Original Trilogy VCDs (as can be seen here - with some pointers to the Prequel Trilogy VCDs too) are also available to buy on the likes of eBay, flea markets, and also online stores specialising in these types of ‘retro’ format.

There are also some preservation projects (as they were once only available via import and quite rare) and ‘info & discussion’ threads listed up in…

An Index Of Projects & Help Thread for Star Wars Preservations…

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

fmalover said:

I recently watched a retrospective on the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multimedia project, and on the segment dedicated to the SotE videogame they reference the fact that it has a bit of everything, an on-rails shooter, third-person action shooter, starfighter shooter, and they consider this a weakness but I disagree.

I kinda miss games that had a bit of everything. Now it’s strictly a platformer, an action RPG, an open world adventure, but there’s no mix-and-match.

I love that game - and still play it from time to time. Agree with you - the variety of styles is a strength of SOTE, not a weakness - especially considering the length of the game too.

This new OT thread on it may be of some interest fmalover:-

Shadows Of The Empire : Lucasfilm’s mid-to-late 1990’s EU multimedia project

and if anyone is into ‘retro’ games, these OT gaming threads have been updated / created…

We have X in HD, but we still don't have Star Wars
Time

Most, if not all, of the ‘Star Wars: Vintage’ collection is now available in HD on Disney+ (or SD upscales labelled up as being HD?)

• Ewoks: Caravan of Courage
• Ewoks: The Battle for Endor
• The Story of the Faithful Wookiee (animated short from the 1978 Holiday Special)
• Clone Wars (2003 animated series)
• Star Wars: Ewoks
• Star Wars: Droids (coming later this year)

https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-vintage-collection-disney-plus

Yet still no HD or 4K release for the unaltered theatrical version of the Original Trilogy available to buy.

Are there any new Star Wars Books coming out soon? a general book discussion thread
Time

'Classic Star Wars books are getting re-released for Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary’:-

https://www.polygon.com/star-wars/22364157/star-wars-essential-legends-books-zahn-thrawn-bane

and at Del Rey’s twitter account too - https://twitter.com/DelReyStarWars/status/1377981111263973379

Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary certainly does seem to be used as a cash-cow more than a celebration of the company and what it has achieved…

Let’s hope the authors receive their royalties for these repackaged books - unlike others.

as well?

Would u be able to provide me the 4k/1080p upscale version, i wont compare to the tv version because lq plus its just title screens. Thx

Sorry mate - I don’t have them; though am sure tbird97 & Rancor022 could help with what you are after 😃
