The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

I saw TLJ for my 2nd time today - the CGI scenes I thought I had issues with on my 1st visit have dissolved (a different & better screen, I think), and thought the story overall played out better too.

Yes, some of the humour is over the top in a couple of places - and felt a little forced - but that’s the subjective nature of comedy, and the humour in the previous films have often divided opinion down the years, so no real surprises here - it did shift the tone/impact of a couple of scenes for me.

The Canto Bight scenes also didn’t stick out for me as much a 2nd time - it was also more noticeable the abuse the fathiers were suffering - whip marks to their bodies etc. And also appreciated that this is a reversal of the Mos Eisley from Star Wars somewhat - this place too is wretched hive of scum and villainy - just at the other end of the scale (‘give a man a gun and he’ll rob a bank, give a man a bank and he’ll rob the world’).

The Progs, Ahch-To milk dispenser, fathiers, and Crystaline Critters - a nice spin and reminder that the Force is an energy between all things - including nature, and the importance of that.

Really thought Hamill nailed it (and his scene with R2 really resonated), the cgi on Snoke was very nicely done (and so what if his backstory isn’t explained - or if he isn’t Darth Plagueis etc - he is another strong dark side user, where his lust for power and control led to his arrogance and blindsided his beliefs as to what was before him). Carrie did great - some real emotion and her wit shone through here. Driver & Ridley were quality - as was the support cast too.

(I even noticed an actor from an old UK comedy I liked - Channel 4’s Teachers - Kurt of ‘Kurt & Brian’ fame, the hapless pair with great chemistry - was a Rebel pilot in this).

There are still questions and a couple of missteps for me - yet the talented fan editors on here already have some intriguing ideas…

Left the cinema with a smile once again - but with a more fulfilled feeling this time - and TLJ will still likely be in my thoughts for a good few weeks to come - and that’s what a good enjoyable film should do, isn’t it? (For me, anyway.)

It certainly didn’t go the way I was thought or expected it to go - that too… nice one 😃

I’m now very much looking forward to seeing how Episode IX plays out.

We haven’t heard mention of Wedge Antilles either. I’d like to see Wedge come back and help recruit new pilots or something.

They apparently offered Lawson a part in TFA - undoubtedly as one of the Resistance officers. He turned it down because he thought the part wasn’t big enough, which I find odd considering the size of his roles in the OT.

A larger part in IX - as Wook alludes to - something like he trains / or has been training up rookie/new pilots would be most welcome to see, especially if Poe is more of the Rebel Leader character in the next film.

I’ve been glad that Lando hasn’t been in the ST so far (as I think any inclusion in those stories would have seemed forced for his character), but it would be odd if he’s not in IX, after setting up the whole regroup and rebuild the Rebellion thing at the end of the movie.

I agree - even if it was in the form of a hologram like we got for Maz in TLJ; something like ‘I’m sending you some help and resources that may be of use to you’ etc in his own unique style, of course 😃

Having seeing Wook’s idea - I prefer that!

I’d bet the Solo movie is going to show off Lando’s gambling skills in a major way.

I hope so.

Of course, Jar Jar is the key to all this y’know…

😉

Regarding JMSW, Frink wasn’t the only one who suspected him to be JMOW, yet noone received even a warning. It was just stated that he’s not a sock and that calling him a sock will no longer be accepted. And I think Frink stopped after that.

There was also the username thread incident, but then again, Frink was not warned individually, only a vague “you” group.

I’ve checked this and you’re right - thank you.

Due to other circumstances going on behind the scenes - and in other threads - it had been overlooked.

Please note that we keep this thread alive to serve as a mechanism for announcing or explaining the reasons certain bans occur.

It is NOT an outlet for you to express your approval of (or joy at) users being banned, regardless of the reason.

Users are banned temporarily because their infractions aren’t serious enough to be removed permanently; negative comments about them while they’re gone aren’t conducive to a friendly atmosphere when they return.

It is also not an outlet for members to express their judgment as to whether someone has been ‘rightfully’ or ‘unfairly’ banned etc.

There is often a lot more going on behind the scenes than you are aware of - or privy to - when a member is banned (temporarily or permanently) - and any decision is not taken lightly.

That a member states with some assurance as to why someone else is banned is beyond me - and is also often incorrect. Yet that incorrect assumption then seemingly becomes taken as ‘fact’ by others, and spreads across the site.

Some decisions taken may appear to be somewhat unfair or unjust - however please trust the mods & Jay to do the best we can to ensure the smooth-running of the site - and to unfortunately take appropriate action when also required.

We do have work, families, friends and loved ones, other interests - and a life outside of here (I think). We all put considerable time, effort and energy in to try and keep this place a decent, somewhat different, corner of Star Wars geekdom - much of which you may not ever be aware of - or see.

In my short time as a mod here I have been taken aback by the dedication of Jay & the mods as to just how much work goes into keeping this site what it is.

And thank you for the tips on responsible modding.

SilverWook has been pretty darn active, even oojason. It’s not like it’s been a lawless zone, given how quite a few users have been banned since I’ve come to talk TLJ. Part of the issue I believe is that some of us don’t use the report button as often as we should; more often than not, I see it where members try to play moderator, but it tends to lead to more issues and becomes a bigger mess until a moderator has been alerted.

Thank you. Fellow members would do well to take notice of this post.

I will also point out that people will not be aware to much of the moderation that occurs in some particular threads.

Aye mate - sites like HelloGreedo have their own store https://www.teepublic.com/user/hellogreedo - and seems that teepublic site, and others like them, make t-shirts on a ‘made-to-order’ basis now too. It also has some decent SW t-shirts on there on general sale too.

(A bit different to days of old where someone would have to pay set-up fees, screen-print costs, and deposit down or buy a minimum of 50 t-shirts beforehand etc)

I’m not saying we should have our own store - yet there are possibilities out there…

PewDiePie? Really?

The lad who did this - https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/sep/11/pewdiepie-racism-youtube-games-industry & http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-41222593

and in the first line of his video you linked to says, after mocking the hype re the new Star Wars film, ‘I’m not that big of a Star Wars fan’.

Nandi, if you’re going to post a video or review here etc then add some info and context to it - it’ll help members make a decision as to whether they wish to click on it before doing so.

Do not just post a link.

What does him saying the n-word have to do with anything lol

Given the lad’s history why shouldn’t it be said his opinion may not hold much weight?

Also in the context of ‘I’m not that big of a Star Wars fan’ too.

‘lol’? Really?

I’m not arguing his opinion isn’t absolutely worthless. I’m just asking why would him saying the n-word make his opinion more worthless? One of my best friends is racist towards hispanic people, but I’m not going to start throwing his opinions out the door on other matters regardless of how stupid his feelings are on one matter.

Did you click on the links and read them? Likely not - as if you did you’d realise it’s not just ‘the n-word’, is it? And also what the gist of the Guardian article is about too, yes?

And I didn’t say anything about using ‘the n-word’ making his opinion more worthless. You seemingly assumed that.

Also, again, in the context of ‘I’m not that big of a Star Wars fan’ too.

Anyway, back on topic…

As a person who watches pewdiepie from time to time (I’m so sorry), I have seen the “controversial videos”. . His first controversy consisted of “news” cherry picking jokes, taking them out of context and editing them in such a way that it made him look back. The original videos were fine, no racism there.
His second controversy was that he shouted “oh what a f_____g n____r” at a bot (not at a person, but a video game character), he quickly changed it to “oh what an a_____e”. When he realized what he said he started to apologize then he started to laugh with an “oh shit I hope nobody noticed that” look.
It was stupid, childish and absolutely wrong, but his explanation made perfect sense - he wanted to be offensive for comedic purposes, so he said the first offensive word which came to his mind. Why was THAT word the first which came to his mind, that’s the a good question though.

Thanks for that.

So he’s a thoughtless person who uses racist language who also makes antisemitic jokes, who wants to be offensive for comedic purposes. He’s also not a ‘… big of a Star Wars fan’.

For the last time… back on topic.

When I told him about Han’s shirt in carbonite being fixed, this is what he said:

"Who cares about his stupid shirt?! How deranged do you have to be to care about or even notice that? Little girls are having their clitorises ripped off by religious zealots, and some nerd wants to fix Han Solo’s shirt?! There are VASTLY more important things in the world than this stupid nonsense. These nerds aren’t even creating art. They’re just saying to REAL artists, “Your stuff wasn’t good enough. Here, I’ll fix it.”

Your friend capitalised his speech? A neat trick.

Did you tell your friend that you spend the majority of your time on a site continually asking questions, in often an acerbic manner, of a person who gives up considerable time, effort, and money on something out of his love, respect and appreciation for it?

What did your friend say to this?

Hopefully the pair of you are on your way to right the world’s wrongs. If you put half the effort into questioning the authorities & politicians why they don’t do more in combating religious zealots to protect little girls, as you do to Adywan, I am fairly certain they’ll take some sort of action.

Have some time off from here to help focus these efforts.

When you come back I hope you have a more worldly & compassionate view - and will understand that repeatedly harassing and denigrating others isn’t on (even after being warned not to do so).
