Maximum Size Of Member Signatures... (as of 25th Feb '18)

 (Edited)

We previously had maximum dimensions for images in signatures of 600px (horizontal) and 120px (vertical)…

As a growing number of members now use the site via their mobile phones or tablets, and whilst some others have slower internet speeds, or limited usage data… we have now decided that the maximum allowed size in total for anyone wishing to have a signature image will be 600px horizontally & 120px vertically - plus one additional line of default-sized text.

Animated GIFs are allowed, as long as they do not exceed the maximum image size limit stated above (600px horizontal, and 120px vertical), and are not greater than 100KB in size.

Any signatures containing non-compliant images may be removed without notice.

For clarity, the white rectangular image below is 600px by 120px:-

‘Text only signatures’ should contain no more than 7 lines of default-sized text in them - this includes lines used for any line breaks / paragraph breaks or gaps.

For example, the picture of a signature below uses 7 lines of text; 4 lines of text and 3 line spaces in between:-

Note 1 : Please do not have signatures that resemble anything like those of Jay & the moderators on here.

Note 2 : Site Contributors or Editors etc are allowed slightly larger sized signatures - IF required to help with informing fellow members of their projects/work. They are advised to ask a moderator beforehand if they feel they need a much larger sized signature.

This may be of interest on how to post images on the site etc - and some more other useful info too…

Thank you.

Thanks for letting me know. I fixed it.

You banned Janskeet, so I guess you'll have to fix him yourself. ;-)

I just put a picture in my signature, but made it as small as possible for this very reason.

Whoa, Janskeet got the ban-hammer? When did this happen?

Few days back. Sounds like he fed (or attacked) our pet troll and got himself eaten. Warned him not to. He was so young too!

There's always AdBlock which I use if a signature image is too damn huge.

Right, but it is a wee bit silly for literally hunreds of members to all download ad block, when the other option is to have a small handful a members lower the rez of their sig pics. Also, usually the types that are running computers/internet connections slow enough to be buggered by large picture files are also the type who'd have a hard time figuring something like AdBlock out.

Yeah. To me the large image sizes are just irritating. I also use NoScript.

Large images in sigs never really annoyed me, but what got to me was loud animations in sigs (not like those bars).

We've decided to allow animated GIFs for now, as long as they do not exceed the maximum image dimensions given above, and are not greater than 100KB in size.

I'm disappointed that only a small number of members have voluntarily amended their signatures. Does anyone actaully read these announcement threads?

Not very likely. I'd highly recommend sending out PMs, rather than just hoping they happen to pop in here and read your post.

Kind of reminds me of that bit in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where they are about to doze Arthur Dent's house, and the guy in the bulldozer tells him he has had fair warning since the plans for the new bypass had been posted at the planning agency for several months, to which Arthur replies that he searched all over the building for the plans, and eventually found them hidden down in the basement and had to use a flashlight to look at them since the lights were not working down there.

Not that this thread is that hard to find, it is just that most of us just pop in, skim a few threads, write a few posts, and pop back out, without even really thinking about checking out the announcements.

Just delete the oversized pics. Those affected will ask "WTF?", and then look in the forum for an answer!

Nice, now it looks like I was saying that this thread is damn near impossible to find, when I was saying it isn't that hard to find. You should get a job in journalism. ;)

Sorry 'bout that...I think I deleted too much text, and made you look bad. I only wanted to clip out the middle section...and didn't double check my not-so-good handywork.

I went for comic genius, and ended up with with a pile of crap...Now I know what Lucas feels like.

:(

Again, I'm sorry, my man.

I'm sorry Master Moth3er, I have fixed my sig. I'm good at fixing sigs. Always was :)

Anyway I was alerted to this thread this morning, but have to admit that I'm so stupid for not looking around at other threads. Well all is well now.

Not quite - your animated GIF is still 473KB in size.
