Modern SE Revisionism
Time

How about the 'Sounds of Star Wars' book.  The point of the book is the sounds, so yes it would be nice if the pictures were from the same time period, but they're not, even though the book is done chronologically.

*EDIT*

Another example the 'Creating the World of Star Wars 365 Days' by John Knoll (publication 2005).  Again the book is presented chronologically, but the screen images are from the 2004 dvds, and although haven't checked for descriptions which reference 70s tech, the 2004 colors would be the issue here.  Would these be included in this, or do you want to maintain SE changes only?

Would you add in a measurement of degree of revisionism to this list, or let the reader decide?

If yes, here's some ideas of categories/terminology:

Mild Revisionism - example: Clerical Errors, Poor Research by non Lucasfilm employee

Medium Revisionism - example: outside General Lucasfilm articles, newspaper, tv reports

Severe Revisionism - example: Lucasfilm publication but not primary focus of publication, outside specific Lucasfilm Special Effects articles, newspaper, tv reports, History books

Outright Revisionism - reserved for Lucasfilm publications only

Disagree.  If you believe e-mail is closer to a post office box then talking directly to a person.  Here's an article on the topic:

After awhile it's better to have the communications and deal with the spam then to not make those connections.  at least for me.

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

Thinking out loud, is there a more computational way to find these variations?  Is there a negation filter (maybe exclusion) where if the two movies were overlaid you could negate one from the other, leaving behind the changes.  What if the originals were modified so that one was just cyan and the other was just red, then when combined you would ignore the purples (or process them out) and focus on the left over cyan and red material.  Problem is they probably don't align close enough, because of the widen frame composition...

Your CNET "35 Years of Impossible" example:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/35-years-of-impossible-ILM-visual-effects-article-on-CNET/topic/11949/

There have been at least two conversations of film history books with SE pictures but discussion of 70s FX.  One had it's own thread, the other is in the savestarwars thread.  Will try to refind them.

Here are two video ones: (originally posted in the savestarwars thread)

Twentieth Century Fox: The Blockbuster Years (TV 2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320996/

~41:55 they show the SE shot of Han running around the DS corridors and meeting up with the enhanced large crowd of Stormtroopers.

The Science Channel had a program last year called "The Science of the Movies".  In the first episode they interview John Dykstra about motion-control technology. One of the opening quotes goes like this:

It's a technology which allows filmmakers to do the seemingly impossible.  Turn tiny models into colossal spaceships.

and they cut to the SE Death Star approach shot.

So what I figure could be done is we can take these kind of shows and insert the original shot, so people can see the difference.  I've taken this programs opening segment and inserted the OT shot, let me know what you all think.

http://noneinc.com/SSW/SotM-002-half_h264/  SotM-002-half_h264-desktop.m4v  (8 min. 57 mb)

This version uses the whole segment, but probably it's best to severly cut out the extraneous, so this can probably be whittled down to 2-4 minutes.  Used the Wookiegroomer Splits for the additional clip source.

Haven't you heard...

Lucas changed his mind about the SE's that were just shown in theaters.
They will be re-mastered again, but this time they will digitally add
back in bad matte lines, scratches and reel change indicators. As an
added touch they will remove approx 1.3 seconds of footage and include
a splice "pop" in the soundtrack. This is to ensure that home viewers
will be able to enjoy the films as they were originally presented in
theaters back in 1977.

After the SE's make the home video circuit and are put on absolute
perpetual moratorium, the Absolute Definitive Restored Special Editions
will apprear in selected theaters across the country. Then they will be
released in a special home video version packaged in an replica of
C3PO's head. It will be accompanyied by a genuine certificate of
authenticity to guarantee it's status as a limited (they will only
produce ten billion of them) collectable with investment possibilities.

Whew...

I would like to see a trade-in program where one can exchange the SW discs
he bought last year for the ones that are coming.  Wouldn't that be great?
(I know, I know, don't hold your breath!)   :-)

Why hasn't this happened yet...

I am getting tired of the ridiculous speculation that these will not be released on video.

(A)  When the THX Trilogy was sold, it was billed as you last chance to
"Own the Original" Star Wars...leaving them open to sell the Special
Edition.

(B)  I can not think of one majorly successful film that has been
precluded from a video release...why would SWSE be an exception.

(C)  Fox and Lucas have never failed to make money where they can
thorugh the Star Wars product(which is fine by me)...it is is ludicrous
that they woudl pass up an opportunity like this.

Those of you sayong "But reports say it won't be available on
video"...think about it!  With SWSE release tomorrow...do they want to
let everyone wait and get it on video...or to keep the seats in the
theatres full...think about it.

No more posts saying it will not be available..they are groundless
speculations based on intentional misinformation from Fox and insane
predictions.  Get real.

We've come a long way folks, a long, long way...  *sniff*

The above thread ends with:

I've got those plus pan and scan on Beta and LaserDisc.

I expect to add the Special Editions on both LaserDisc and DVD once they come
out.

I'm wondering if the Definitive Collection will be the higest quality video
release of the originals for the rest of history. Will we see the originals on
DVD and future formats?

They could make it a neverending shot.  Have Luke see Ben and Yoda, Vader fades in.  Then those 3 all look over their shoulder <camera zooms in> to see Qui-Gon, Yarael Poof and Jedi-'X' who look over their shoulder <camera zooms in> to see Jedi-'Y', Jedi-'Z' and i'll leave that to people who know more about the EU...

i dont see how this ruins the "reveal" in official ROTS

Younger Ben who like most of the SW universe was quite certain that death means you don't get to talk to someone, ever again. When Yoda goes, I've got someone to talk to you, and it's a dead guy. That's a surprise. A reveal.

That reveal works less, if Younger Ben is shown to have communicated with the certainly dead guy earlier in his history.

Now you can speculate that this clip is either a vision, hologram, dream, Fortress of Solitude crystal vapor drug halucination, etc. But I don't see how you can have the RotS Yoda message have the same weight if Younger Ben has been 'talked' to previously with the character who was suppose to be gone.

yes, we haven't seen the episode yet. no ones holding their breath. But i'm going with Obi gets a 'bonk' on the head and forgets this Qui-Gon ghost meeting. or Qui-Gon's ghost might have the ability to wipe Obi's mind afterwards, keeping the reveal poignant. there's some good retcon.

*EDIT*

or if you'd like to pull a fast one on Yoda, and loose the revel aspect, having Qui-Gon and Younger Ben form an alliance behind the back of the Jedi Council, so Younger Ben is Acting when Yoda informs him of Qui-Gon's return.  That's something I could buy into.  Qui-Gon was semi-against some of the decisions of the council in TPM so it wouldn't be out of character.  and it would set up, like AotC Ben, a detective Qui-Gon ghost storyline, which when you figure out how and where these ghosts can go and do, then something might make for an interesting episode.

Yeah vision quest or bonk on the head will make things go away:

Here's the RotS dialog.

02:04:31,760 --> 02:04:35,196
Master Kenobi, wait a moment.

1093
02:04:36,680 --> 02:04:41,674
In your solitude on Tatooine,
training I have for you.

1094
02:04:42,960 --> 02:04:44,188
Training?

1095
02:04:44,320 --> 02:04:48,711
An old friend has learned
the path to immortality.

1096
02:04:50,680 --> 02:04:53,638
One who has returned from
the netherworld of the Force.

1097
02:04:53,760 --> 02:04:56,069
Your old master.

1098
02:04:56,760 --> 02:04:58,159
Qui-Gon?

1099
02:05:00,600 --> 02:05:03,717
How to commune with him
I will teach you.

#____ is towards a topic.

The key with twitter is to get other people to do the whoring for you.  Otherwise it's just you at the street corner on a box yelling into the wind.

That tweet Jambe mentioned earlier (but didn't include who it was from) was Kyle Newman (director of Fanboys movie) who has been pimping BE and RtJ, since he saw it.  Twitter is all very cliquey.  But what's great for Jambe is Newman is twitter buds with people like Katie Lucas, Bonnie Burton and the inner LFL web-core.  But of course at any time anyone can use #starwars and reach a large mass of SW fandom.  and that's part of the power of twitter and why it gets 'good' press.

Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck's work on SW

Almost all the public versions of the scripts can be found here:

http://starwarz.com/starkiller/

and they have several articles:

http://starwarz.com/starkiller/2010/03/the-connoisseurs-guide-to-the-scripts-of-the-star-wars-saga/

With passages like these which document the Katz/Huyck contributions:

March 15, 1976.
The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as taken from “The Journal of the Whills” (Saga 1) Star Wars.
Revised Fourth Draft Screenplay. 156 pages. 252 scenes.
With circa 30 percent dialogue additions by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. (The actual shooting script: Ben Kenobi dies.)
Source: Bouzereau: p. 3; Pollock: p. 20; Flynn: p. 13.

SW.SE. 1997.
Star Wars. Episode IV: A New Hope (Special Edition).
Public Version of Fourth Draft with Special Edition changes. No scene numbers. No dates. Annotated by Laurent Bouzereau, including interview snippets from George Lucas etc. Asterisks (*) indicate the most significant dialogue contributions from Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz for the revised Fourth Draft. Printed in Laurent Bouzereau, Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays, Del Rey 1997.

and

http://starwarz.com/starkiller/2010/05/the-development-of-star-wars-as-seen-through-the-scripts-by-george-lucas/

Lucas had consulted his co-writers from American Graffiti (Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz) to sharpen the dialogue, which he felt lacked humour and bounce, and although he rejected most of what they came up with, their new ideas gave Lucas renewed confidence in his work

From what I remember the 'Star Wars - The Annotated Screenplays' by Laurent Bouzereau, is the place to start.  They notate each Katz/Huyck dialog with a '*'

The book is in google.books so you can search through it from here:

Poking through my copy the first significant contribution I find is the Luke/3po bit:

Just Luke.

THREEPIO

All that is accredited to Katz/Huyck.

Where else could you find someone from Pixar (and soon to be ILM) publicly blowing off a statement made by the guy who invented THX.  Of course what is a sound engineer doing making comments about the visual medium...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomlinson_Holman

Tomlinson Holman is an American film theorist, audio engineer, and inventor of film technologies, notably the Lucasfilm THX sound system. He developed the world's first 10.2 sound system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Hickel

Hal T. Hickel is a visual effects animator for Industrial Light & Magic.

At the age of 12, Hickel wrote a letter to Lucasfilm outlining his ideas for a sequel to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and received a polite rejection letter from producer Gary Kurtz. The letter now hangs on the wall of Hickel's office at ILM. Twenty years later, Hickel found himself working on Star Wars after all, as a lead animator on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

The original quote is "Hit the accelerator!"

It's gotta be a gag... <checking google translation> Wow it's not, it's a real translation.  Tried 'hit the accelerator' and google translator gives something else, but if you take the actual swedish subtitle, the translator gives back a similar word to the concept.  Someone was looking for some Backstroke-ian subtitle hijinks and this is a fantastic start.  Now I need to start watching again, since I was reading off and on originally.

Odd but the Vader line "As you wish" is not subtitled.

Can also turn this thread into a guess the swedish sub.

*EDIT*

another off-color sub at 15:50 of Reel 2.  I personally am stunned to learn what supernovas were up to.  but so far two for two with exclamation points!

*EDIT 2*

Woah they renamed Chewie! : Reel 2 ~28:55  (3 for 3 with !)

*EDIT 3*

Also weird they don't subtitle, when all the Rebel pilots are checking in.

...hehehe same jöke as original find at Reel 3 ~23:35 quote is "Accelerate to Attack Speed"
