Some internet folklore perspective of the RotJ boot:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.movies/browse_thread/thread/f6a5e67aa89c1bdc/86fcaa5d8d5003d1?hl=pt&q=bootleg+%22return+of+the+jedi%22#86fcaa5d8d5003d1

Actually, it is mostly true. Even though it is easier to go the Middle East and
bribe the projectionist to leave the films out by the back door (this is how
Return of the Jedi pirate videos showed up while the movie was still showing).

The camcorder thing is rather funny, the "media" (spec. American) claim this practise is more common in the whole of Asia (Middle-East, South and East Assia). I have heard rumors of it being done in North America but the news story didn't give any specific cities, places, movies or culprits. Not even the investigating agency! :-)

Same thread, mention of the cropped SW:

I saw this for myself in 1980 - a copy of Star Wars that had been videocammed from within the theater, thanks to a friend who had excellent ties with the local entertainment community. The movie looked OK on the TV set except that the edges were cropped since my friend just set the camera up on the movie screen, centering it on the top and bottom, as opposed to the sides.

Same thread, investigation story:

I recently discoveredthat I was part of an investigation in the mid-80s - some bootleg tapes were showing up, and by tracking and cross-referencing the lot numbers from the video tapes, and what cities the features were playing in, they'd narrowed it down to about five theatres in the US. It turned out that a kid working at a theatre in Dallas had a brother who worked for a video production company, and he was the culprit. They were apprehended quite by accident - they stiffed one their cohorts, she overheard discussion of the investigation in a shopping mall food court. In retaliation she went over, introduced herself, and layed out the whole story.

*EDIT*

Lead on a SW audio theatrical preservation:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.starwars.misc/browse_thread/thread/e4faf1ce73aa4c5b/8c24b25d798052e5?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=sci-fi+channel+%22carrie+fisher%22#8c24b25d798052e5

Not an option for me. I tried to watch it the last time USA ran it. For
one thing, my USA cuts in and out at random intervals; for another, the
cuts were just too damn distracting.

(Little voice from the newsgroup: "What cuts? I didn't notice any
cuts!")

Well, kids, you see, it's this way. Sit down, children, Grandma's going
to tell you a story.

[old-fartess mode ON]

'Way back in the 1970s and early 1980s, when the Star Wars movies were
first released, there was no such thing as "waiting for it to come out on
cassette." Home video recorders were rare and expensive items, hard to
come by, kind of like lightsabers. This is why the first Star Wars movie
-- back before it was called "A New Hope" -- played in some theaters for a
year or more: because the fans wanted to see it again, over and over, and
*that was the only way they could see it*. And when you heard someone
speak of "my tape of Star Wars," it meant that they had done what I did --
taken a portable *audio*cassette recorder into the theater and recorded
the sound.
So I know the entire audio track by heart. A couple of different
versions of it, in fact (echo in the chasm?). And when I watched the USA
broadcast, I couldn't help but notice that, while all the spoken dialogue
was in its proper place, there had been many small cuts *between* lines.

Hey it's this thread except over a decade earlier: 1997.11.11

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.video.tape-trading/browse_thread/thread/cc7766c5eb457069/dabd045815e67016?hl=pt&q=%22empire+strikes+back%22+bootleg#dabd045815e67016

Hey,
This is and can be considered a slightly off topic post in some areas,
but here goes. I am interested to find ANY of the three Star Wars
movies (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) in any of
the below: (ALL must be from the reel directly or from a theater, like
when a guy takes a videocam into the theater to bootleg it for resale
or his own use)

@ Original Theater Releases (especially opening day/week)
        @ Re-Releases
        @ Special Editions
        @ Private Showings
@Etc, whatever I missed, but not from the videos! (or from like HBO
or whatever)

I know, I know, you're all thinking I'm a idiotic nut who should just
buy the videos. I have the videos. I need the bootlegs.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

The claim that ESB came out too blue because they were using better monitors is, frankly, laughable.

Ok stumbled upon this and found it... well... phunnie.

Now go get into your time machine.

Set the dial for January 12th, 1996, 3:00 am:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.movies.tech/browse_thread/thread/8cbd4dae68b6e3d5/cd4d29ebeff22a0?hl=pt&q=%22star+wars%22+%22telecine%22#0cd4d29ebeff22a0

(material deleted about seeing garbage mattes, and followup about tech
explanations)

I asked Tom Holman (former tech director of Lucafilm and TH of THX) about
seeing the garbage mattes on the THX Star Wars CLV laserdiscs. The topic
has been argued frequently in the laserdisc newsgroups. He did say that
you must calibrate your tv properly, especially for black level and
brightness. Even then, your TV's D.C. restoration characteristics may not
be good. He said that on their calibrated TV monitors, the garbage mattes
are not visible.

Now there are two of them! Pixar person continues:

Oh well; I think I still see some of them, even after
calibrating (AVS pluge). May be my DC restoration.

...am i'm not sure who's laughing now. <puts hands on head and rocks slowly>

Lead on another Star Wars. 1993.02.01

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.starwars/browse_thread/thread/4b1b243c716c4462/1f8c66e95aab3706?hl=pt&q=%22star+wars%22+%22bootleg%22#1f8c66e95aab370

I've seen ads in Comic Buyers Guide for a Star Wars Bootleg copy with
different angles on some scenes and no opening credits. What can anyone
tell me about this? I think the asking price was $24.95 or something.

same posters tries asking again for info:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.starwars/browse_thread/thread/a9e37f71ff75d28a/df35e2f2ec7b6927?hl=pt&q=%22star+wars%22+%22bootleg%22#df35e2f2ec7b6927

But this lead could be false, as I would guess those CBG ads didn't get vetted, at all, so it could be a fake. There are some phunnie fakes offered up in some usenet posts. Remember being tempted but the descriptions were too good to be true, and the usenet populace would quickly respond with 'scam' warnings.

The Aluminum Falcon wrote:

I was wondering if it was known for sure which run of Star Wars these bootlegs came from.

Informations going to be difficult to come by at this point, unless someone close to the source wants to discuss. After the first round of viewing and discussing, the collective questions which don't have adequate answers can be forwarded towards the people who offered up these versions.

*EDIT*

SW1977 Beta tape lead:

http://groups.google.com/group/hsv.general/browse_thread/thread/6b0ebfe576a3fd48/d5f83cae41975a7d?hl=pt&q=%22star+wars%22+beta+tape#d5f83cae41975a7d

Back in 1977 when it first came out, we saw it at the theater 3 or 4
times; bought it blackmarket on Beta tape; then with friends and family
always wanting to watch it, I quit counting how many times I've watched
it after the 77th viewing.

Well that's not going to mean anything round these part, user names and all. "Hey, it's me!" Thanks for posting.

The clash animation mattes detail you pointed out makes me wonder if when they did the work were people assigned shots or parts of shots. Was someone responsible for all lightsaber comps, someone else all laser blasts, someone else spaceships etc. What you point out really sounds like an assembly line mistake, where they don't look at the whole scene just the photoshop selection. and apply the filter and move onto the next shot. Wish the guy from the blu-ray thread who was part of the color job would write a little more...

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Here's something else to factor in. Spike TV paid $65-$70 million for 6 years, to have exclusive broadcast cable rights for the hexology. That was 2005. Contracts up. Having this "upgraded" blu-ray version being the next broadcast version can only help increase the next TV deal.

Aside - anyone have preservations of the Spike versions? (since it's off-topic answer in PM please)

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

Might be time to expand the acronyms to GOUTCC.

(George's Original Unaltered Trilogy: Color Changed, Color Corrected, Changed Chroma, etc.)

Having GOUT as the title of this project and then manipulating the colors seems against the GOUT name.

So maybe it'll become: GOLDCC - George's Original LaserDisc Changed Colors

GOLDOC - George's Original LaserDisc Original Colors

LOLDOC - Lucasfilm's Original LaserDisc Original Colors

I don't like Apple
Time

The differences between Apple and PC towers is less then the differences between the towers and this generation of players/pads/cellphone/gaming devices. Makes me very confused that people will spend money on a computing device which can't copy/paste. All these new devices are loaded with DRM and hide behind stores which function as gate keepers that don't protect the customer, but do allow companies the ability to block stuff. These companies want you to rent not own. Right now it's the beginning with music and media (iTunoos/Netflic), soon it'll be bandwith and processing CPU cycles...

This goes for any of the ones mentioned in the first post, that can be tracked down, no guarantees. For those without access to newsgroups, an alternative is being considered. That option will not be discussed in thread posts because of the rules of OriginalTrilogy.com. Which is why there is a PM function. Personally I dislike posts asking for copies. For me it shows more interest if you ask a question or comment about the issues involved in the thread. Those that have will be notified as this process evolves.

For what it's worth, the Moth3r and Catnap Widescreen 1977's are from different sources: (thanks ReverendBeastly)

Catnap -> (see hair on right side)

Moth3r ->

Watched half of the Catnap, and it suffers from the screen's blacks periodically shifting to blue. Anyone seen something like this and could conjecture a cause? What's nice about this Catnap version is there are color bars at the beginning and it has the full 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm logos, which the other SW's don't have. Compared to Moth3r's, the Catnap is cropped high at the bottom and left, and has a tad more screen on the right side.

The full Catnap discussion starts from this post:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Pre-ANH-bootleg-telecine-a-widescreen-version/post/365264/#TopicPost365264

It's also PAL (01:56:30), was attempting to watch Moth3r's, Catnap's and the 77_ANH_BOOTLEG at the same time to determine differences and every 10 second you need to do a stop/start to keep it on pace with the others. With all the audio's slightly off it's kinda eerie.

Because the quality of the pan/scan bootlegs is so poor, is there a possibility that these widescreen ones could be the source of the pan/scan. Would they have recorded off a tv or was there some VHS process to zoom in?

What issues does everyone recommend people pay attention to or look out for, when watching? Can be a general recording issue or some specific for any of the movies.

Anyone got experience with bin/cue files? Using a Toast trick can get to the MPG, but even VLC won't play it on the mac side, need to try it out on some PCs.

Added:

2002.05.xx : CTP (3 bin/cue)

2002.05.xx : Cinema (ep2a/b.mpg)

--Might be same as "starwars.ep2cd1&2.mpg"

Have a lead on another RotJ.

The Clone Wars messes up continuity or how Lucas is still destroying star wars.

I kind of like the political episodes. Sure, its not Star Wars

I don't see why politiking couldn't be SW. It would be a departure, but not that big a leap. The Clone Wars for the first time, gives some representations to the General Public, a major factor missing from the politics of the SW movies. There's never any will of the citizenry, which makes the stories quaint. The problem with the SW politics right now, is there hasn't really been a case where both sides have legitimate greivances, and the issues doesn't get resolved by some murders or wars. Understand Wars are integral, but if you want a more vibrant political investigation and conclusions, might need to give up on some of the things held dear. Wars not make one great...

The first half of this season was pretty slow with a lot of politics.

I like the political dealing episodes more then the action focused ones... With action episodes, I can drop out, and at the end whom ever is left standing, good for them. With the political episodes (which don't go far enough in creating a vibrant universe) you need to pay some attention to find out who's manipulating who and what actions are causing this and that to take place, why certain groups function as they do.
