Revenge vs. Return
Time

In the newspaper article search there's others from 1980, NYTimes:

http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=FB0617FE345D17728DDDA10994DD405B8084F1D3

and Chicago Tribune:

There's also two from 1981:

The Victoria Advocate: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=tlAdAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_FcEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6768,1403634&dq=return+of+the+jedi&hl=en

same article in The Palm Beach Post:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=gf4sAAAAIBAJ&sjid=wcwFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1141,4271232&dq=return+of+the+jedi&hl=en

a year later the Victoria Advocate is again talking about Return in conjunction with GL's vacation time:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=YMFHAAAAIBAJ&sjid=UoAMAAAAIBAJ&pg=6980,129432&dq=return-of-the-jedi&hl=en

Here's that Nimoy doc, the 'Revenge' part is right up front: (the youtube title listing it as released in 1983)

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

via danny_boy in: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Theory-on-the-1997-restoration/post/549347/#TopicPost549347

Talking about the SW SE from a Wall Street Journal article:

Eventually 748 of the 2,228 shots in the movie were redone in the course of creating a new negative

33.57%  Which means were missing quite a few.  (my count is a little higher then zombie's spreadsheet but is shot specific and i'm at 251 visual, don't know if the 748 number also includes audio changes) [and i'm missing two shots somewhere... my count is currently 2,226 for original 77 SW]

But in the same article they talk about:

Other pieces weren't even original negative, but intentionally degraded duplicates that Mr. Lucas had stuck in to avoid emphasizing the quality of adjacent optical effects, some of which were so crude as to be almost unacceptable.

So that could mean anywhere there is a shot similar to a SFX shot, the shot before and after could be up for SE Change consideration.  [I can open up a copy of the spreadsheet if anyone wants to go thru and make a guestimate.]

Revenge vs. Return
Time

I wasn't thinking that 'Revenge' is the fake out like 'Blue Harvest' but more of a way to differentiate the information flow.  They had two titles one which was going to be final and one which was semi-fake.  If they wanted to treat trusted sources with more proper information they could have gone with Return, and people they dealt with who they liked less could have been given the 'Revenge' title.  It's a 'people in the know' kind of thing, if a reporter back then went up to someone at LFL and asked about Revenge of the Jedi, one storyline could have been dished out.  While Return (which was less used) they might trust more.  /speculation

Here's a newspaper article from May 22nd, 1980:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=m98zAAAAIBAJ&sjid=SzIHAAAAIBAJ&pg=3761,2500650&dq=revenge-of-the-jedi&hl=en

The first trilogy concerns itself with the young Ben Kenobi and the early life of Luke Skywalker's father when Luke was a child, according to Lucas.

The next chapter is the end of the second trilogy entitled "Revenge of the Jedi" and is the conclusion of the conflict between Vader and Luke, he said.

and there's about 20 others with 'Revenge' mentions from just 1980.

*EDIT*

and yet here's another 1980's article with 'Return of the Jedi'

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=6aUuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KAgEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6778,4601824&dq=return-of-the-jedi&hl=en

So, three years from now, he will not have to spend six weeks in Hollywood, in a sound-mixing room, to complete "The Return of the Jedi," the third "Star Wars" movie.

On your piece.  You've got the SW part wrapped up.  But your tie-in to the 'real' world is limited.  You've got the three early examples which you expect people to know, then at the end you've got these random photos of people you don't identify and don't explain their relevancy.  Seems like this is a start of a larger piece but as you've had this piece of almost 5 years now, not sure what you're up to.  and if the answers are in the doc you mention in the youtube description, provide a link.

*EDIT*

As they already had the Blue Harvest title floating around, having a different title during production from the final film added a second layer towards obfuscating their work.  If a leak happened and it was attributed towards, Revenge, they could know it was person on set.  Probably only about 4-7 months before premiere would they have needed to alert all the toy and book companies involved of the final title.

Any Star Wars TV stuff coming up?
Time

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ridley-scott-reveals-the-prophets-of-science-fiction---this-november-on-science-132463438.html

Ridley Scott, the creative genius behind legendary Hollywood classics including "Alien," "Blade Runner" and "Gladiator," comes to SCIENCE this November with the world premiere eight-part series, PROPHETS OF SCIENCE FICTION.

Episode Descriptions : Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne, Robert Heinlein &

George Lucas

Premieres Wednesday, February 22, at 10:00 PM (ET/PT) (Tentative)

From Luke Skywalker's light sabre to Darth Vader's Death Star, the Star Wars franchise is one of the defining science fiction works of the later 20th century. George Lucas' prolific imagination has already inspired two generations of scientists and engineers to push the envelope of technology. By introducing computers into the filmmaking process, he changed the way movies are made, and the way we all see the future. Surprisingly, many fictional technologies from "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" are now becoming a reality.

Color correcting the 2011 OT Blu Rays (* unfinished project *)

mverta wrote: but unless you plan on documenting each shot individually, you won't be presenting an accurate accounting.

In anticipation of a someone or a group attempting to do a shot by shot something, i've been creating a spreadsheet which lists every shot and people can take this and begin to document their progress.  Right now i'm using it to catalog revisions between home releases.  But if someone wants a column for color correction settings, it all can be incorporated.  (FYI: SW has the most progress, ESB just started and will get to the others in time)

Shot List Spreadsheet - v0.6.05 - 6 films - <strong>Multiple SW Audio Mix Changes Added Recently</strong>

New version available: ShotList-StarWars-v0.2.05 :

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtjXdIjRQo5NdHRmMlNNVjJXQmtfSlZyMHVVYUxvaUE&hl=en_US

Added the other 5 movies' scene info, and have starting working through ESB.  Added a link spreadsheet with future to include information about changes and trivia, etc.  Suggest others!

hairy_hen wrote: Inverting one of the channels will cause everything centrally panned to cancel out, not just the dialogue, so a lot of sound effects will go missing and an accurate comparison becomes impossible.

This sounds like what we'd hope to achieve.  Ideally most of the audio will become silent.  (both recordings are identical or near identical)  So the stuff which remains, the unlistenable parts, are where we go back and listen normally and those are what we write down as an audio change.  [it ain't going to be that easy, as one of the notes in a posts about the 2004 mix is that all the effects on Vader's dialog was redone...  that kind of change will need to be confirmed a different way.]  And as you mentioned, all the factors from the original recording, EQ, volume, etc. all will affect the inversion/canceling out process.  Need to do some attempts to see if it get's a satisfactory result.

This idea was done visually on the movies, and it resulted in things like this:

So in this example, the 2004 and 2011 were identical (all the black areas) except for the roof which got an upgrade.  We'd like to do this but with the audio, to spot changes.

doubleofive wrote: None has taken pieces of all of our projects, and made the most crazy/awesome thing ever.

We've got all this knowledge and bits and pieces all over the place why not combine them and see where it goes from there.  As pages like the SW.com and the wikipedia SW change page disappear, we'll need something to take their place.  With the information in a spreadsheet, it will hopefully be able to be dumped into a database or a blog format.

Once TPM is done then we'll see how to incorporate the TV's Frink fan edit lists (right you've never done TMBTM's War of the Stars?), as joining in the fan edits will allow people to compare the official changes to the fan edit ones.

When a user gets banned, the 'greyness' also takes out the ability to get the specific link for that post.

Here's the post above the banned user post, I was trying to save:

Maybe this was done on purpose so people, would link to the posts which got people banned.

My SW Locations Book is coming Dec 1 - Please check it out!
Time

Do you plan on any non-facebook page?  (some of us around here don't go to any facebook pages)  Do you have a publisher or is it self-published?

Please let us know when it's available for pre-order.

There's another book with 'A Galaxy Not So Far Away' as part of the title, have you heard from them?  http://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-Not-Far-Away-Twenty-five/dp/B000H2N094/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319075774&sr=8-1

and from the first post you can change the title, so if you want to switch to the book title, that might help people find the topic later on.

Shot List Spreadsheet - v0.6.05 - 6 films - <strong>Multiple SW Audio Mix Changes Added Recently</strong>
Time

For those with audio expertise what's the best way of going about doing a comparison?  Would like to start comparing versions, but definitely sure I don't have the ear for it.  (listened to too much noise)  But want to give it a shot.  Is it best to put one ear as one mix and a second in the other ear.  was considering playing short spurts of 2-4 versions listening and going off the lists i've accumulated.  problem i'm having with the sources on hand is they're all different frame rate/speeds, the PAL vs NTSC thing.  Also getting more familiar with the changes and when they occurred.  Would like to compare several of the 80s versions with the 97 SE.  then do a straight 2004 / 97 comparison as that seems to be when the most changes were made.  Getting the sense that much of the changes thru the 93 are flipping between the 77 35mm stereo and 35mm mono changes.

Also considering putting them into Soundtrack pro so can visual watch the wave forms which might help spot things.
