Nancy Allen on Irvin Kirshner
Time

She seemed so nice...  Is there a script of the pre-Kirshner version?  Has she explained it any further.  Here's a bit of the story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RoboCop_2

However, Miller's script was labeled "unfilmable" by producers and studio executives. His script was heavily changed through rewrites, and drastically re-written into what became RoboCop 2. *OMIT*  His original screenplay for RoboCop 2 took on an almost "urban legend" status, and was later turned into a nine-part comic book series called Frank Miller's RoboCop. Critical reaction to the comic adaptation of the Miller script were mixed to negative.

My STAR WARS Thesis; I need help!

http://books.google.com/

Can point you in the right direction, plus you can refine your search when you discover an alley worth micro-searching on.  All the major GL bios and his books are in there.

Same thing but with newspapers:

http://news.google.com/news/advanced_news_search?as_drrb=a

You could cross compare what people said about the movie in the few early years verses quotes from when it was re-released in 97.  See how recorded opinions changed.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

TServo2049 wrote: Could that print have made its way from whatever person made the Catnap transfer (presumably in the UK, judging by the speedup and PAL color bars), down the line to Jaxxon, and eventually to Puggo? What are the odds?

3po sez: 3,270 to 1.  Definitely a possibility but i'd say rather remote.  Would make some sense that these prints do remain in the hands of like minded Star Wars fans but this would be so bizarre.  Hopefully more 16mm's will be digitized and this can be looked at with a good data set.  and the catnap color strafes throughout, which needs to be considered when looking at a specific scene.

Darth Mallwalker wrote: However This cue dot error from Catnap is not present on GRANDE.

Isn't that pic from moth3r?  Here's the Catnap: (just peaking out the bottom, if that's not an artifact or other type of capture error)

General question on SMPTE-55 and cue dots.  What are their proper names (besides motor and change over) or a common usage name and as there are only 4 per group, do they have a more specific name.  I should have capped all of them... instead of just one per group.  Reminds me to add the -1 ESB to: http://fd.noneinc.com/Reel_Changes/Reel_Changes.html

The influence and Cultural significance of Star Wars?
Time

Article from today's sunday edition on the topic:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/fashion/popularity-of-star-wars-endures-even-for-children.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=star%20wars&st=cse

On one level Sci-Fi replaced Cowboys and Indians for children.  Bullets became lasers and swords returned from medieval play via the light saber.

Star Wars's simple title will stick around for the time when the stars/space are still our next destination.  Once that becomes more common place then the ideas of the myths embedded in SW will move onto other stories.

In the less short term, Star Wars will become the poster child for extended/perpetual copyright abuses.

Nah the people around here who want to remain sane know to keep a level head until things work out.  In the Theatrical Performance thread are some of my conversations with others who wrote online about their SW recordings.  Total is under 10 and all but two were certain their tapes were gone, one was still looking last I heard.

I'm not even sure if it was a couple of days or weeks into it's premiere here in AZ.

I'm sensing that your parents have... to be cliche Star Wars guy ...become one with the Force?

Shot List Spreadsheet - v0.6.05 - 6 films - <strong>Multiple SW Audio Mix Changes Added Recently</strong>
Time

Thanks didn't know about your past work.  (maybe I saw it way back when, but had completely forgotten about it)  The data moves over fairly easily: test v6:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtjXdIjRQo5NdEk4U29vZ1pPaFVYN2xlREl0amhCTFE

problems encountered are you have some extra pieces.  'blank' sections between the opening logos for instance.  I'll probably add that to this.  and i've got deleted scenes and the variations to attend to when porting the data over.

Why did you use End Time?

Thinking i'll split End Time into two columns as google docs is misinterpreting them initially.  First column for the time info (0:00), second for the frame decimal. (.665)  Right now having all the movies in one file, the limit for a google spreadsheet is about to be reached, unfortuantely.

For your purposed -1 there should be enough columns which allow you to sort to get rid of the data you don't want.  For instance, getting rid of the unused script scenes should be accomplishable with a quick sort.

Thanks for the work and bringing it back up.  Thanks Moth3r for the reference.

Big fan of Junji Ito's manga.  Uzumaki (Spiral) has been classified as feminist horror as instead of everyone getting stabbed, everyone gets sucked into a vortex.  The movie is relatively lo-fi, a work of admiration.  The fun part of it is the computer sfx guys put small spirals thru out the movie in odd and unusual places.

Just got back from "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1855401/

Good times with a small but diverse crowd.  Lots of nervous giggles, some out right laughs, (one guy really dug the death gag) and the old guy in front of me, kept making scoffing sounds before he fell asleep.

Roger Ebert's review's last paragraph is classic: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120229/REVIEWS/120229974

and on the way home saw Louis CK filming the show.  Then someone threw up on the train home...

Also watched Kevin Smith's Red State.  Not sure why that one got made.  Comes off as very thin.

Latest soundmosaic test takes the full TPM audio to recreate the full Twin Suns audio:

http://noneinc.com/SWxTPM-4DWHUXGA/soundmosaic/sw4d-test-020.wav

This version works for the most part.  The repetative choppyness makes you aware that it's not the original audio but you can clearly hear the melody shining thru.  This test required about 12 hrs computation so this will be easier to tweak.  Will try different segment sizes to see if more of the TPM can peer out.  Easier to make out the theme when the whole clip is reproduced.

Not necessarily.  According to Coate's in70mm.com page, Capri had SW in 35mm opening day May 25/27.  And remained that way until Sept 14th when it got a 70mm print.  How long that 70mm print remained there i'm not sure, may have been as short as a week.  Do you have a guestimate what date everything went down?

ESB leans more towards being a 70mm recording, as Capri had the 70mm print opening day.  The 70mm ESB has a few variations.  How are the crowds in this showing.  Was it early on so people were generally not aware of the reveal?

Scofield it is.  What propelled your mother to record the movie?  Was this a special case or part of a hobby?  Typically with the digital file is a small text file explaining what it is, the story behind it would help place the recording in some context.  What ever you'd like to tell.  Some people go as far as mentioning the recording device.

Info: Topher Grace's Prequel edit
Time

http://www.slashfilm.com/topher-grace-edited-star-wars-prequels-85minute-movie/

Synopsis from article:

His idea was to edit the Star Wars prequels into one movie, as they would provide him a lot of footage to work with. He used footage from all three prequels, a couple cuts from the original trilogy, some music from The Clone Wars television series, and even a dialogue bit from Anthony Daniels’ (C-3PO) audio book recordings. He even created a new opening text crawl to set up his version of the story.

The result is an 85-minute movie titled Star Wars: Episode III.5: The Editor Strikes Back.

Topher Grace is commonly known as an actor from 'That 70's Show': http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0333410/

Other quotes from articles:

we were told that this would be the one and only time he would screen his cut. Of course, there are tremendous legal issues which would prevent him from screening the edit in public. He has no intention of uploading the footage online, and doing a screening at, say, Comic-Con, would require uncle George’s permission — which probably would never happen.

http://www.3news.co.nz/Topher-Grace-revamps-Star-Wars-prequels/tabid/418/articleID/245782/Default.aspx

"It took about nine months to do. But I was learning and experimenting how to edit at the same time. Hopefully this will segue into a series of some sort."

http://www.movieline.com/2012/03/08/topher-graces-85-minute-star-wars-prequel-fan-edit-pwns-too-bad-you-cant-see-it/

Now, is there any difference between Grace's edit and a fan edit made by some not-famous Joe Schmoe Star Wars fanboy with an editing yen? I don't see why there would be

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/celebritology/post/topher-grace-has-created-an-85-minute-version-of-the-star-wars-prequels-with-no-jake-lloyd-and-very-little-jar-jar/2012/03/08/gIQAJYF0yR_blog.html

Actually, Grace reportedly wants to encourage this small group of Hollywood insiders to pursue similar re-edits of other films. It’s unclear why, unless he just wants his colleagues to think more carefully about which elements of a script are truly needed to tell a powerful cinematic story, which could be a valuable exercise.

Yes people around here like myself are interested to hear how people reacted back then.  It's a cliche but it's extremely rare for these type of recordings to come forward.

Here is a thread which lists other Theater Recordings and links to their threads:http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Theater-Performance-Preservations/post/454292/#TopicPost454292

I'll add this thread to the list.  Feel free to create a name to identify this version.  Other SW77 in theater recordings are morgands1, blitter, Belbecus, L.Mayer & BrianM.  Only one of these (L.Mayer) has significant 'crowd interaction', most of the recordings were done in empty theaters as the recorders were looking for a clean copy to appreciate the audio mix.

On thing to identify in the recording is which audio soundtrack it was.  The Starkiller Mono Mix guide has explanation and audio clips:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/mono/

To help determine which theater the recording came from, if it is 70mm, this website has a list of all the locations the 70mm screened and when.

http://www.in70mm.com/news/2003/star_wars/chapters/openings.htm

Mr. Coate's also identified the ESB 70mm screenings:

http://www.in70mm.com/news/2003/empire/index.htm

Thanks for the info!

Any Star Wars TV stuff coming up?
Time

The George Lucas episode of 'The Prophets of Science Fiction' is premiering as i'm typing.  Missed the first 15 minutes.  But when they aired a clip of Star Wars, I believe they've notated it as 1997.

*EDIT* SW is definitely labeled 1997.  ...but Empire clips are labeled 1980....

The show is about how works from books to movies spur real world science.  Episodes tend to showcase two of three technologies, along with a brief history of the author/creator and overview of the books/movies.

We'll the third soundmosaic test finally finished after computing for 3.5+ days.

http://noneinc.com/SWxTPM-4DWHUXGA/soundmosaic/sw4d-test-003.wav

Some of the tones are a little stronger then the --partition quick test-001 version.  The problem is the sample base, it's too limited.  Next round of tests will be with a larger piece of the movie, working toward the full movie audio being digested.

One of the things learned in this third test is that it's probably best to not continue working at 4800khz.  Half of quarter resolution may work enough to show the theory can be pulled off.
