How would a Star Wars reboot do?
Time

1Shouta wrote: I meant legally. In 1080p. On a Blu-Ray disc.

The work that is being done now, will become legal when the copyright expires.  We can vote people into government who can reduce the copyright extensions of the past, so the legal will be in our lifetime.

But to keep this on topic.  Doesn't sound like you want to do a reboot, you want a refined version.  When a project reboots they focus on the items being revised, not from where they once came.  It's fine to behind the scenes make a list of things you didn't like, but when they talk about 2012 Total Recall, they don't say going to Mars was a waste of time.  Instead they go, elevators thru the Earth's core are sooo cool.

There are ways I could perceive to refine the stories Lucas told.  But haven't given it much thought of an over arching story element which could make a SW reboot worthwhile.  But i'm one of the old foggies who's less interested in the story and more interested in how it was implemented.

The SW reboot I would like would be to go back in time and get the Turkish SW guy to complete his trilogy, back in the 80s.

Here's an article about the Hungarian dubs: http://www.starwarsklub.hu/14_egyeb/05_szinkron/01_trilogy/szinkron_trilogy.htm

(Attempting to work through the mechanical translation, if I misinterpret something please correct.)   ESB was the first in theaters with a dub. (szinkronjai)  In 1982.  (maybe SW was original subtitled in theaters, or is the IMDB 1979 premiere date incorrect?)  Then in 84 (christmas) Star Wars was shown on TV with a dub.  Jedi maybe never was broadcasted on tv so that's why it didn't get a dub.  [I don't think these two dubs got an official release, just tv recordings?]

The 1993 VHSs became the first official dub.  Mentions several oddities of the dubs, are they saying they dubbed the ewoks?  Chewbacca was called Harah.  Sounds like the (government sponsored?) dub facilities lacked funds and that party explains the multiple versions often cannibalizing from an early version.

Thanks csd79.  Would you know the reason behind the late dubbing of RotJ?  Maybe the VHS releases (SW and ESB) were done as promo for the theatrical release of RotJ, so after that, time just passed the release over.

This Hungarian IMDB has cast list of the voice over people of the three versions:

SW84-94: http://iszdb.hu/?szinkron=810

SW95-96: http://iszdb.hu/?szinkron=1340

SW97-current: http://iszdb.hu/?szinkron=1341

SW Films: http://iszdb.hu/?oldal=ker_eredmeny&holkeres=0&mitkeres=csillagok%20h%C3%A1bor%C3%BAja

This info seems specific to a video release or TV broadcast, yet IMDB list Hungary as showing the film in 1979.  Would you know if the film was subtitled and/or dubbed in the 1979 release? or any of the films in general.

Public relations manager... pretty awkward.

A reminder that people have opinions and can like one or more things?

The SW films are digital, the fan projects are digital.  The debate is not format, it's the choices made, your comparisons (digitally) paint that picture.

Clarify your point, reframe the debate, but put it in the General SW forum.  It'll get better debated there.

No one's debating the amazingness of a blu-ray disc.  Is 'one of the few' still territory of the 'average Joe'?

The two pics share a resemblance.  But they remind us of what the threads about.

  • The band members had their video and photo cameras switched on -- and that is forbidden in the cathedral, judge notes, citing a witness.

  • Judge notes that the women were wearing short dresses. "When they bowed (before the altar), their dresses rode up."

  • The judge is reading out detailed descriptions of how several believers -- the crime's victims -- said they were insulted by the womens' actions. "Their clothes didn’t conform to Church rules," the judge says, among many other complaints. "The normal functioning of the Church was violated."
  • Judge just said Pussy Riot engaged in homosexual propaganda.

^ The pieces added to TPM since 1999 (extended pod race for example) are in the 3D.  The cropping is closer to the 1999 version, for home video the movie was significantly chopped.  and factor in this:

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2012/01/27/star-wars-phantom-menace-3d-preview/

So when you start a conversion, do you start from the beginning or the middle or the end?
We worked in an odd order, because with Episode I, we were also doing a restoration. One of the first questions that my Associate VFX Supervisor, Dorne Huebler, and I started asking, was that if we were going to take this movie and cut it up into 2,000 separate pieces, we had an opportunity to upgrade what those 2,000 separate pieces are. It seemed like we had a perfect opportunity to go back and create a cleaner, sharper and purer version of the movie.

In fact, the window was closing on that; these archive tapes don’t last forever and they haven’t been meticulously catalogued and archived because no one thought that was really the master of the film, so it wasn’t clear that we were going to be able to find all of them.

Where did you find them?
They were in a variety of places. It was some work to find them and we found about 98 percent of them.

I think there's a different term then moire. (not sure what it is called)  We're not dealing with two overlapping patterns, just the dot display which creates the pattern.  What the dot display was is up for questioning.  A gridded pattern like:

or an alternating matrix like:

Take the image below and go into the post editor and grab a corner and scale the images and you'll see how possibly the larger waves of the holograms may have come about.

My guess is the filmed tv was on it's side, or the camera turned 90 degree. (this also seems to be the case of the shots in ESB which read horizontal)  But much of this depends on the tv model recorded.  The TV static when Leia's message resets could also tell us more.  But if filmed in a certain way, like Harmy said at full 35mm resolution, they could read as our eyes see tv an image, with enough pixel bleeding to melt together, only when resized and contrast boosted does everything go haywire.
