International Audio (including Voice-Over Translations)
Time

Was able to quickly chat with Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood about the foreign language versions at Celebration VI.  Burtt recalled around 20 versions made over the years.  The general process was Lucasfilm would provide the Music and FX track to the overseas companies who would hire the actors for the dialog dubbing and record the translation.  Those recordings would be sent back to Lucasfilm who would complete the final mix with the assistance of someone who spoke the language so the mix wouldn't step too far on the dubs.

Woods remembered completing around 8 mixes for the 2011 blu-rays.  He referred to F.I.G.S. (French, Italian, German, Spanish)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIGS  but time was short and wasn't able to confirm the others.  Am going thru the international Fox sites to get 2011 information.

This site has pics and information on a 1979 Polish 35mm print!  It's english crawl with subtitles.

Star Wars : 'Tantive's Orange Items' Thread & other unintended objects
Time

The Ben Burtt story mentioned earlier in the thread was as zombie84 suggested, just a workprint.  Ask Burtt about the story at Celebration VI, he was unfamiliar with the Tantive Orange Items from the description I provided.  Asked a few other people but no one was familiar.  Most of the people there were from other disciplines. (model makers get most of the attention)  Probably need to chat with one of the editors or later on LD/VHS production people.

Shot List Spreadsheet - v0.6.05 - 6 films - <strong>Multiple SW Audio Mix Changes Added Recently</strong>
Time

DVD-BOY wrote: Do we know at what points the reel changes occur?

Yes, Mallwalker figured them out earlier (see his reel thread), using math and analysis of the orchestra segments, but we are also confirming the locations by finding pics of them: http://fd.noneinc.com/Reel_Changes/Reel_Changes.html

So with each scene, you restart the numbering of shots, how does the sub-shot lettering work?  I get 97A, But AA ZB etc I don't follow.

The Shot/Sub/Scene values were my initial idea for connecting the shot list with other production information like storyboards.  The values were lifted from a production script. (it's listed at the top of the spreadsheet)  So for SW used: http://starwarz.com/starkiller/2010/03/star-wars-the-adventures-of-luke-starkiller-revised-fourth-draft/

But with any of these scripts there are issues which affect the numbers and until more time is spent documenting pre-production artwork this is all a little nebulous.

As we migrate towards a wiki presentation, the columns on the far right are probably a better place to start.  They are just a sequential counting of the scenes.  There will be some flux, once the existing spreadsheet is incorporated with the GOUT frame data provided by negative1.  One spot where we differed was early on negative1 broke out the pauses between Fox Logo and Lucasfilm Logo.  I hadn't but will revise to his methodology, these should be very few.

If you look at the other movies you'll see I gave up mostly on the Shot/Sub/Scene data.  If there was a definitive number in the script then it's in the spreadsheet, but otherwise didn't go much further with those columns.  The 97A is completely my made up designation.

For those into the Shot/Sub/Scene info from the scripts, it does inform you of how they juggled scenes during production.

Hopefully there's some easy spreadsheet to wiki conversion, haven't looked for it yet, but will eventually if no one else finds anything.

Heads up for those using SABnzbd to download from Usenet: it has an option, enabled by default, to protect you from wasting bandwidth downloading encrypted (password-protected) RARs.

I found that my download had been paused after the first RAR because it had detected that encryption is present.

In this case however, the password is given in the NFO so it's all good.

And showing them a project based primarily upon the 2011 set is going to convince them how.

Somebody needs to upload this to youtube for the general public.  If you cite it as "fair use" it will take at least a couple weeks for fox to email them and for them to take it down.

Youtube uses a system called 'Content ID', when the first note of John Williams soundtrack plays this will cause the upload to be flagged.  There is no 'Fair Use' citing on youtube.  When your video is blocked you can counter the block.

Idea &amp; Info: A Preservation Wiki?
Time

Information about the films can be placed into wookieepedia (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) without many headaches.  We can probably work with them to see how they would react to fan projects getting into their pages.  Did chat with them briefly at Celebration VI this past weekend.  (but it was about coordinating a foreign language initiative)  There is an offshoot of wookiepedia which maybe more receptive to fan projects, for example the Phantom Edit has a page: http://swfans.wikia.com/wiki/The_Phantom_Edit

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

SilverWook wrote: Are there other scheduled events that conflict with the screenings, or are people off partying somewhere?

Two movies are shown thurs, fri, sat, so that they end just around midnight.  There are no other events at the time, except for the rooms which were running late over the course of the day.  Families with little kids, who would go for a day, they may stay for the first movie.  A percentage of the people attending are off partying, all the websites have their own clicks.  This year TPM 3D replaced the old version so that had a pretty big draw.  Wanted to check if they were playing the blu-ray version, but didn't this year.

Tobar wrote: I just couldn't believe they treated the things that brought us all there with such little fanfare.

The movies are the common link which opened the door to everything else which fandom appreciates at the Celebrations.  They are no longer the focal point.  The movies are no longer the focal point.  And much of the reason to go to C-whatever is to meet the people.  But there are those who may not have a community so the movies are a way to be communal.

Might want to add if the version you are using is US or UK.  Can't remember off hand which was SE and which was the other way around, if it was.  Answers probably in here:

These are great stories, csds79, and the off-topic is completely worthwhile if it helps explain an aspect of these films presentation which most of the OT.com community is unfamiliar with.  A similar short before a SW movie happened in the UK: http://www.shadowlocked.com/20100104137/opinion-features/the-lost-film-that-accompanied-the-empire-strikes-back.html  It's great to hear that the community over there has made an attempt to preserved the film.

Hope that Hungarian is the most complex history of presentation/subs/dubs, but only time will tell.  This is the first time i've heard of a theater adding an intermission in a 2 hour movie, anything to make some money.  Thanks for the rundown of what happened in Hungary, csd79.

I had originally thought that most countries had subtitles only, but more and more are confirming to be dubbed.  And as this work would have happened overseas(?), wonder what the chances are a voice free recording existing out there.

Beginning to look into the India options.  In Tamil they dub everything, even the aliens, Jabba, Ewoks, Poggle, etc.  But they've kept the English crawl which they voice over.  And no acknowledgement in the credits (visual or verbal) of the dubbers.  Yet in Hindi, the English crawl is not voiced over and the aliens are not dubbed.

2013-2014 will see the release of the new MPEG-H standard.  Initial word is half the current file size for equal resolution. 'Ultra High Definition TV'  Not sure if this is the same as the h.265

Well this is three nights in a row, typing late at night when my brain doesn't function like it should.  I should just stop but I know where my math went off, (using the full file size but we were only talking about 1 reel) which I partly realized and stopped doing the math and thus used the website as my stat cheat.  Problem was I was trying to get red5 to do the math, but starting out with the wrong reel numbers didn't help.  So i'll end this travesty of with 1+1=42. Yes AotC 3D will be previewed at Celebration VI next week.

Which i find incredible concerning Episode 1 3D bombed at the box office.  And it cost 100 million to convert.

Is George Lucas just now in the idea of losing money because he is a billionaire?

When you convert a movie to 3D, the theatrical version is not the only profits you'll get from the life cycle of the product.  There's TV and home video still to come.  You can feel free to think it bombed or cost 1 milllion dollars but do some research before posting idiotic numbers.

Here are some estimates:

Late night typing again... if the movie is 6-8 TB (raw pics directly from the camera) and there are 6 reels, that's 1-1.33 TB per reel.  (two e's)

1 reel = 20 min = 28800 frames... 208mb / frame... that doesn't sound right...?

According to this site: http://www.pgreen.co.uk/resolutionsize.htm

To store the basic scans for a 2K Digital Intermediate of a 90 minute feature:

  • 1 second = 24 frames
  • 1 min: 24 frames x 60 = 1440 frames per minute
  • 90 min's: 1440 x 90 = 129 600 frames per feature film
  • 12Mb x 129 600 = 1 555 200 Mb or over 1.5 Tb

Storage - 4K

  • 48Mb x 129 600 = 6 220 800 Mb or over 6.2 Tb

So revise the numbers from 90 min to 120 or so and maybe there's some minor compression savings and thus -1, 6-8 TB values make sense.

Free Pussy Riot
Time

Unfortunately this story comes to a close this round with the media consuming the story.  Pussy Riot releases a new song on their youtube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/PussRiot

but everyone links to the guardian version which has pictures but lacks credit and subtitles:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/video/2012/aug/17/pussy-riot-release-new-single-video

http://boingboing.net/2012/08/17/pussy-riot-sentenced-to-two-y.html

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/08/pussy-riot-sentence/

True to that mantra, Pussy Riot actually released a new song via The Guardian on Friday called “Putin Lights Up the Fires” (listen below).

The Guardian now makes profits off the videos popularity and people don't know where Pussy Riot releases their message.  Plus people look at the video without hearing (or reading subtitles) what their message was.

Here's a version which incorporates publicly general subtitles in different languages:
