Idea & Info: Star Wars Deleted Scenes - Reincorporated?
Time

ok, started a thread about cleaning frames

here, with a new example of han shot first:

==============================

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/cleaning-up-dirty-frames-for-scenes/topic/14044/

here's the toughest frame to clean:

-------------------------------------------

also there's a thread about color correcting here:

===================================

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Methods-for-colour-matching-colour-grading/topic/9430/

hopefully that will help people looking into it.

Info: cleaning up dirty frames for scenes
Time

i posted some cleaned up frames from

the star wars deleted scene here:

=========================

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Deleted-Scenes-Reincorporated/post/571037/#TopicPost571037

and more here:

===========

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Deleted-Scenes-Reincorporated/post/571040/#TopicPost571040

so now i’m working on more techniques

for other scenes… here’s a short 9 second

sequence from han shoots first in the cantina.

the top are the dirty frames, and the lower

is a test of the cleaned frames.

i didn’t color correct them… and it was harder

due to the dark color… also some of the frames

were out of sequence near the end…

the frame 135 was pretty tough to clean:

=================================================

<span style=“font-size: 12px; line-height: 14px;”></span>

here’s the toughest frame to clean:

if anyone has ideas, or techniques…

discuss them here…

most of it, is blending, and using surrounding pixel colors

to ‘guess’ what the best color to be is…

Just a thing on the restoration of the scene above,when repairing the frames, it's best done after the colour-correction.  When you end color sorrecting the scene, artifacts from the cleaning usually start appearing.

yup, that's right..

too bad, i'm not very good at

the color correction part...

i'll leave that to the experts..

Would there ever be the possibility of seeing a tutorial (or at least a link or two to a good tutorial on cleaning and/or color correcting)?  I would love to take a shot at the new SUSPIRIA blu-ray, among a few other titles.

Such as this scene right here:

 i can't see this image.. i went to the site,

all the images looked good to me.

if you need to ask for coloring advice, the

technical forum would be better for that.

it's a whole art into itself. i don't know

much about it.

there are filters for freeware avisynth/virtualdub,

for fixing scratches, cleaning up dirt, and dust.

however professional software uses a lot more sophisticated

algorithms, including blending, color look ahead, temporal fixing

and others..

basically, it's a lot of looking back/forward at previous frames.

taking the pixels you want replaced.. averaging them over

time.. and pasting them over the original..

you have to look for non-damaged frames if the error is one

spot (lines/scratches).. in that case, you have to make an

educated guess at what the pixel color will be based on

the surrounding pixels and what there color is..

in still pictures with little movement like this, it works

great, because you have a lot more frames to get

pixel replacements from..

when you have short scenes, or a lot of movement.

then you have to go in by hand, and figure it out

by yourself.. otherwise most of its automated.

I'm not going to provide sound samples. This is just a list.

If you want to come up with actual sound comparisons, go ahead. I like your stereo-in-one-ear, mono-in-the-other approach. It's just that I don't have the time to do that myself.

That's why I'm asking for others' help - so that I don't have to watch the whole film and record all the timecodes myself.

we don't need the sound samples obviously.

just a better idea of which parts you

are talking about. thanks for the updates.

you may want to change the thread

topic to reflect the edits you make.

i didn't even see that you changed them.

Which timecodes should be used? GOUT?

If I use GOUT, I will warn that the GOUT-synched Belbucus reconstruction is not *100%* accurate to the real mono mix. One example I can think of is that the Fox fanfare on the reconstruction is just a mono fold-down from the soundtrack CD.

 whatever you use is fine.

we just need something better than descriptions

and screenshots.

-1, if you wondering about the more obvious changes in the mono mix this page: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/mono/index.htm is a good start, but I see that the added X-wing sound effects after "Lock S-foils in attack position" is missing there, that one stands out to me as a quite big change.

Another subtle difference, is in the assault on the Death Star, the line "There’s a heavy fire zone on this side." in the Dolby mixes that line gets cut off at the end due to the distorted quality applied to many of the voices.

 yeah, saw that and referenced it.. again,

no timecodes...

actually, we've found a lot more differences than have

been listed.. maybe we'll have a writeup about once

we know more.

i've made a first test pass on the treadwell/luke

scene in 1080p... here's the downscale comparison

against the original..

didn't clean up the vertical lines,

'glue' frames, or frame bumps yet..

sampled ever 50 frames out 1300:

=============================

i'll post some of the more extreme cleanup frames also..

negative 1 - is it just me or did you desaturate the pics ? I mean they look less saturated than the previous shots .

 i think that's a side effect of the software.

anyway, i'm not concerned about the color yet.

just using the denoise, degrain, scratch and dust removal

manual effects.

** and oh yeah, me Three....

i scroll up and down all the time..

there's a lot more examples with the 8mm shots here:

excellent!

can you put the full timecodes,

or some kind of guide.. yeah i could find the clips.

but it's better to be precise..

we're doing a waveform comparison.. and i've

done a simultaneous listen to the complete sound

for puggo's/dark jedi version vs 35mm version

however, my ears aren't that great.. so i really

didn't notice much beyond what's already known..
