vintage marvel comic and graphic novel covers

I have the first one around here somewhere. World of Fire originally ran in the UK Star Wars weekly magazine IIRC.

Does your copy of Empire have the really creepy purple Yoda based on the concept art?

yeah it does! i'll have to scan that in to show what he looks like.. i forgot about that.. during 'the empire strikes back', i was in England,

and bought lots of books, magazines, posters for it..

i think this was one of them.. (although the US pressings

were probably the same).

did they change yoda later on?

been digging through a lot of old stuff from my past.. and liked this set of covers.. forgot about star wars 2: world of fire .. strange title/story and

cover..

the first two books were in black and white, while

the last two were color.. jedi was also very skinny and

thin.. compared to the other books.. empire is pretty thick.

with the best looking cover..

luke looks pretty strange on most of them..

leia is ok, and darth vader looks pretty good..

[<( The Star Wars TV Commercials Project )>] (* unfinished project * - a host of info)
Time

ok,

back in 1977, they showed the making of star wars on canadian

tv, as mentioned in this calgary herald TV guide which i kept..

no VCR's around to tape it.. but who knows?

anyways, a nice cover, and 2 page article about star

wars during its prime.. nice to see they told us that

'darth vador' is the bad guy! Ha.. must be the

canadian spelling for vader with an 'o'...

from august 26th 1977 - the show aired on september 16th 1977.

Action figures ready to go? Then why did Kenner have to sell me and every other kid a glorified  I.O.U. that Christmas? ;)

yeah, that was a problem when you sell something that becomes

TOO popular!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenner_Star_Wars_action_figures

--

Although the original Star Wars film had been released in May 1977, Kenner were unprepared for the unprecedented response to the film and the high demand for toys. Unable to build sufficient stock in time for the lucrative Christmas market, they instead sold an "Early Bird Certificate Package" which included a certificate which could be mailed to Kenner and redeemed for four Star Wars action figures.[2] The box also contained a diorama display stand, some stickers, and a Star Wars fan club membership card.[3]

By the time the action figures were offered for direct sale in shops, the range had been augmented with a further eight figures, bringing the total number of figures in the initial release to twelve. These were supplemented later in 1978 with a number of vehicle and playset accessories, as well as the J.C. Penney exclusive Sonic controlled landspeeder and the Sears exculsive Cantina adventure playset which introduced four new figures.

The four figures that were first brought out in the Sears Cantina set were released for individual sale with a further four figures later in 1978, bringing the total number of figures to 20. Demand for the action figures and accessories was such that Kenner continued to have difficulty fulfilling demand. Shortages of the toys in the lead up to Christmas 1978 lead some to claim that Kenner were deliberately manipulating the market.[4] Sales of Kenner's Star Wars range in 1978 reached 40 million units, accounting for a turnover of $100 million.[5]

so even though they might have had plans.. they didn't plan

far enough ahead! oh well..

By good old days,I mean the simple release of a film in 1977 as compared to the current style of marketing; a year-long viral campaign, three web sites, six trailers, eight pre-release one-sheets, fans emulating characters they haven't even seen yet, and cell phone apps.

things weren't any better in the 70's..

there were ads for star wars months before it came out,

novelizations prepared on release, comic books, action figures ready to go..

articles in magazines, appearances at conferences promoting it. multiple

posters, interviews, etc, etc, etc..

it was anything but simple..

Man, that is the good old days in a nutshell.  Back when the film was a stand-alone entity taking the world by storm.  No uber-connectivity, real-time, over saturation.  Just a film.  You had little to attach to other than newspaper ads and articles.  Great times.

and the thousands of toys, merchandise,

news stories, books, comics, albums,

singles, costumes, etc. etc. etc.

no such thing as 'just the movie', even

when star wars came out.. maybe back

in the 50's and 60's.. by the 70's everything

became commercial.. not sure what you mean

by 'good old days'.

you couldn't get away from it even if you

tried, unless you were a hermit that lived

in a cave.

This is a real nostalgia trip. You just don't see ads touting a movie that been running for 33 weeks in a row anymore. :)

yeah, you do..

dark knight, avatar, titanic, et.

back to the future.. jurassic park,

..etc. etc. etc..

All but two of those movies are over a decade old or more. I don't recall Dark Knight or Avatar playing for well over a year.

Only two of those even qualify as "recent" movies. And I don't recall either one playing well over an entire year. That just does not happen in today's box office climate, where the home video version is often being worked on before the film even opens.

you only mentioned 33 weeks..

all of those lasted 33 weeks and even longer..

et lasted a year.

jurassic park a year.

etc. etc.. (domestic)

Info: cleaning up dirty frames for scenes

yeah I had the same prob with fftw3. I should have mentioned it but I forgot Depan is dependent upon it.  After you get it working and try it out let me know what you think about it compared to your other software.

 it's a good simple start.

but it has a lot of problems with certain frames..

you have to tweak the parameters, and it's not

intuitive..

of course it won't match up against professional software.

the main thing is this gives you a good start on cleaning,

and i think for standard resolution video it will do..

for anything in HD it takes too long and its underpowered.

the software i'm using is near realtime, but you need

lots of ram, dual/quad processors, and a graphics card

that has hardware acceleration..

i know there are multicore dll's for avisynth, but it's not

a time issue for the rendering,.. it's the per frame

cleaning that is the problem..

Here's the clip.  I think as far as dirt removal it worked pretty good.  It's not perfect and the tape splices, horizontal lines, and vertical lines are still present.

Perhaps this script would speed up the process of bringing these scenes up to a presentable standard? They are gonna need a little more TLC than just this script but it certainly helps with dirt removal and sharpening. I've turned the sharpening way down to where it's just a bit sharper than the original scene.  It might be better with less or a bit more.  I'm not an expert at this by any means.

EDIT:

Here's another from ESB.

That's great!  That would do definitely do most of the hard work.

i agree.. i've been running some tests with all the star

wars deleted scenes.. and they look pretty decent..

there are some areas where it doesn't help or look worse.

so you can back and export those and fix those by hand..

i'll post some more example.

i can't get past this error:

===================

LoadPlugin("Deflicker.dll")

i keep getting a can not load error..

(from virtualdubmod)

i am using avisynth 2.5, and i do have all

the .dll files in the right directory..

i've tried renaming it deflicker.dll,

and i've redownloaded it a couple of times..

==

72.0 KB (73,728 bytes)

Monday, August 16, 2004, 7:31:08 PM

deflicker_25_dll_20040816.zip

still doesn't work..

 *UPDATE

=================================

ok, got past that error.. paths were wrong..

now i'm getting the same problem with : fftw3.dll

being called from depanestimate and failing..

again, i have that in the right directory..

*2nd update:

=======================================

never mind got it working..

It may be downloaded from ftp://ftp.fftw.org/pub/fftw/fftw3win32mingw.zip
For using, you must put FFTW3.DLL file from that package to some directory in path (for example, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32). DePanEstimate will NOT work without it!

that was the problem!
