Hey triffid,

To address some of your thoughts/concerns:

I especially like the combined fonts from all movies, it is a brilliant idea.

That's good to hear. The combined fonts are the basis of all of the menus on the disc and were a collaborative effort between THX and myself.

Only the "I" looks strange. ...
Don't you want to try to incorporate the Mother font into the menus?

I tried the Mother font (or a cannibalised version of it til you informed us of what the true font is) initially as a starting point, but it just proved prohibtive and didn't have the right feel - the existing font is an amalgam of the "A" from ALIEN, "L" from ALIENS etc. so the "I" is taken from the Alien3 teaser poster logo and its much stronger when seen in the correct context.

I do not like the word Appendix, but you people must know better than me if it is appropriate - it is your language

"Appendix" just feels totally right for me - to take its Webster's dictionary definition: "A collection of supplementary material, usually at the end of a book" - well albeit this is at the end of a series of films, it's the correct (and unique) word to use.

Second, why Preservation? Does this term apply to the process that Jonno did with this documentary? I thought that Preservation means more than just copying a video from some source to DVD-R.

Indeed the word does mean more than just copying a video from some source to a DVD-R, it means protecting and maintaining safe - without the kind of movements demonstrated on this board such documentaries would simply disappear from public consumption, ergo this is certainly a preservation project. Just the same as any of the Star Wars DVD's that emminate from this board are referred to as preservation projects. I don't see any difference.

Third, as I already wrote on the previous page, none of the two versions is Abridged in any way. The Quadrilogy version is even a bit longer. Similarly, the words Uncut and Full are misleading. We do not even know which one is older. Maybe they prepared the Quadrilogy version first and then they changed the conception to Kermode's version, who knows? Any Full version must combine both of them with a TRT around 85 mins.

Respectfully, I very much doubt the Quadrilogy was even in it's inception in late 2000/early 2001 when this documentary would have been conceived, produced, written and shot. Nobles Gate are a UK independent production company that created, amongst other similar film-based documentaries, "On the Edge of Blade Runner". The latter was obviously not designed to form some future supplement on a DVD, it was created to be shown on Channel 4/Film 4 as a precursor to screening (in the case of Blade Runner) that film itself, or for the Alien Series - one film per week following the "Evolution" documentary.

This documentary version obviously came first and is a stand-alone item. I view the Quadrilogy version as a bowdlerized version of this original documentary: it's a modification, an amendment. So therefore in terms of the Nobles Gate documentary, produced in 2001 and presented by Mark Kermode - this is the full, uncut version that I watched on UK television before I even heard the word "Quadrilogy". I'll certainly agree that there was more footage shot at the time, that was then implemented into the Quadrilogy version. However that's the not the same uncut, full version (covering Aliens, Alien3, Resurrection) that was shown in 2001.

As you can probably gather I thought quite carefully about every word that went into the description, and I hope you'll see a similar care and attention in the final product, I know were not going to agree on all aspects of the process, but in terms of menus, descriptions etc., bear in mind triffid you did say:

I am definitely against any touches into this our first disc, i.e. adding any other footage or menus. It is great exactly as it is now.

You've got that version direct from Jonno, so you've kinda self-admittedly stepped out of the process on this presentational side. That doesn't mean anyone discourages your opinion, obviously you are more than welcome to comment on the content and lay-out - this team is democratic and adult, and I'm more than aware that you are just as passionate about what is to come: but you've made it clear that presentation is not your first priority (I'm surmising that quality of main content material is your #1 aim). I'm sure you wouldn't have liked it if the Quadrilogy came in 9 plastic CD sleeves with no way to navigate through the material presented

On which subject - I'm all for having one disc/one cover per release. To have each of the babyhum releases for instance in their own unique case rather than being pushed together in 2 DVD packs etc. is far better. The continuity can obviously come from the spines of the sleeves themselves, which I think will work well in their plain, classy starkness that Ash595 has presented us with.

Anyway why don't we use painting/conceptual art for all of the front covers ? We're dealing with a project that one of the greatest living artists in the world has worked on - I don't think we'll run out of sources we can use ! All back covers can be used for stills etc.

There we go, my 2 cents - No killing involved, don't take any of the above personally triffid, it's all meant entirely respectfully, I like it when we all get passionate about this project and roll on disc 2 !

Looking great Ash595

Not yet 8t88 - I'll let you know as soon as I do !

As already mentioned, the disc is completed - some fine-tuning has been done since last week under some supervision and constructive scrutiny from the usual suspects ! I'll just wait til Ash is happy with the cover for the DVD_ROM folder and then the release will be ready to go. I'll send it to all necessary parties here first, then I'll create a new Official Release Thread for others to show interest if necessary.

Here's the text I supplied to Ash for the back of the cover:

ALIEN APPENDIX 01

A PRESERVATION OF THE 2001 DOCUMENTARY "ALIEN EVOLUTION", A ROBUST APPRAISAL OF THE ALIEN QUARTET PRODUCED BY NOBLES GATE AND PRESENTED BY MARK KERMODE. AN ABRIDGED VERSION APPEARED ON DISC 9 OF THE "ALIEN QUADRILOGY" BOX-SET.

THIS IS THE FULL, UNCUT BROADCAST EDITION AND THE FIRST RELEASE IN THE CONTINUING "ALIEN APPENDIX" SERIES: A COLLECTION DEDICATED TO THE ARCHIVING OF RARE MATERIAL FROM THE ALIEN SERIES AT THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE LEVEL OF QUALITY.

Cheers,

Evening folks.

After much gnashing of teeth the final disc has just rolled off the burner !

Very pleased with it, tried to incorporate lots of advice from all of your initial looks at some of the front-end and I'm now pleased to say my work is done !

NFO created, I've included a few mini curios in the DVD_ROM folder.

The final size is:

Evolution - 4.20GB (just the same as Jonno's original disc, not a frame touched)
Menu, Intro and Credits roll - 12MB
NFO and Curios - 14.8MB
TOTAL SIZE: 4.23GB

So I've got a fair amount of size to put a nice cover in the ROM folder and then I'm done (ideally in a nice uncompressed TIF style !).

Ash has his own prototype in the works, I've sent him some back text. Klokwerk, do you want to try your hand at one ? Knowing that's your area of expertise, I don't think a choice would be detrimental to anyone. Only if you've got the time, of course.

So we're nearly there. I've got CBS Aliens already encoded and lopped of adverts as necessary, so if people think that should be #2 there could be a very imminent companion disc and the preservations shall have truly begun !

#1 (Alien Evolution Preservation) is *finally* done and I'm very happy with it. Huge thanks to Jonno and THX for being my technical advisors... More to follow in the next 24 hours

Got the suntech CBS Aliens this morning - many thanks suntech.

Some tech for those wanting to know:

2:57:53 total running time

Disc size: 1.66GB

Aliens itself runs over the following time sections (adverts - many of which are *very* amusing take up the remainder):

0.02.13 - 0.16.35
0.19.13 - 0.34.23
0.38.24 - 0.51.19
0.55.19 - 1.05.33
1.07.38 - 1.26.54
1.30.57 - 1.42.12
1.44.25 - 1.56.03
2.01.06 - 2.20.19
2.22.32 - 2.39.33
2.43.49 - 2.52.28
2.54.32 - 2.57.22

So roughly each segment is as follows:

14.22 (from start of Fox fanfare)
15.10
12.05
10.14
09.16
11.15
11.38
19.15
17.01
08.39
02.50 (credits - ending with "released by 20th Century Fox)

Bearing in mind it's NTSC, I'll let someone who hasn't been up for the best part of 20 hours work out the final running time

Definitely the extended edition from what I viewed, whether there is any further additional material is down to the final tally of minutes !

Obviously I'll be able to set up an option of with or without adverts since the film will be able to fit onto a disc twice due to its original size.

Best as ever (and that's one wicked poster Ash !)

***//BUILDING EMPIRE\\: PAL & NTSC DVD - NEW EDITION NOW ONLINE! ***
Time
Indeed another UK'er here, happy to report that Building Empire has arrived and is truly superb !

Having seen it at various times through it's gestation I can safely say that Building Empire can proudly sit alongside all other discs that evolve from this forum and others that just amaze me that they are fan based. I truly feel like I did the first time I saw Deleted Magic watching Building Empire. The care and attention gone into this project speaks volumes for the fact that none of the extras on any of the retail Star Wars discs can hold a candle to the sheer sweat and tears that must have gone into this labour of love.

The man that is Jambe can sit on his laptop-less laurels for a while and have a well deserved rest before Returning To Empire kicks off.

Any UK/Europe OT'ers can happily contact me and I'll PiF so Jambe doesn't have to put any more time or effort or more to the point - £'s into this ! Let the man rest, dammit

Well done, Jambe - great job !

I'm with you triffid on the Batman Dead End front.

Jonno - YOU THE MAN ! Thanks so much for the package, waiting for me after a nightmare day at work... Suffice to say it made my day

I've been slaving away over Womble and I'm really happy with a potential credit roll that I've put together to put a bit more of a stamp on our collective efforts, suffice to say it's small enough (as will the menus be) that *no* compression will be made to any of the material - I think that seems to be a universally held belief ! I think I should be able to have a completion date for Disc 1: Alien Evolution quite soon. I'm aiming for next weekend, work permitting. I'll keep all posted.

Do we have a wish-list for a following release order ? The good thing is there is no rush whatsoever and we should definitely chase the leads we have to acquire the best material out there rather than rushing things. We've got plenty of material. Any ideas for Disc 2 ?

I think rip-off artist is a bit strong though...anyone who's seen Lung fu fong wan (or City On Fire) could attest that Tarantino is a unique visiona... oh, no hang on you're right - he's a total rip-off artist !

Would like to see those two. CLP's Pulp Fiction is a done deal though as discussed, maybe on "The Whole Bloody Affair" of Kill Bill ?
