Gary Kurtz Blasts 'Star Wars' Myths
Time

I've always felt Han's arc ended at the end of Empire. After Empire he's just a useless caricature of himself - there's no point to his character anymore. Come to think of it, there's no point to Leia because of it. And Chewie's along for the ride. Not to mention that keeping Han alive makes Lando entirely pointless and even more redundant than he already is (I like the character, but that's how it is), and it robs Jedi entirely of any focus it otherwise might've (and should've) had. I feel that at that point the story needed to converge instead of partially repeating itself and splitting needlessly into several subplots, out of which only one was remotely interesting, even though it didn't make a lot of sense the way it was written.

Jedi could've easily blown Empire out of the water, but they managed to screw it up completely, is what I'm saying.

could these be one of the first 4k blu-rays to appear on the market? A tie in with the new film or as part of a blu-ray package if a deal is done with one of the companies? That would certainly boost any potential sales of 4k equipment.

I'd welcome that change in LFL's handling of home releases. I'm still amazed the 2011 set wasn't put out exclusively on HD DVD. Someone must've locked Lucas up in the office closet for that meeting or something.

This was in response to MFM saying:

Regardless of how horrendous the quality was, he still gave people an opportunity to see the unaltered versions; as long as they don't replace the Special Editions then he won't care.

I honestly just want this thread to get back on topic. Is this a problem with you?

PS Sorry for the weird quoting and highlighting, I can't seem to make it go away properly.

Paste it into notepad first - it'll remove any formatting - and then paste that into your post. Simple, but it works.

"Given the source" being the key phrase here. If we forget the whole letterboxing issue, that is.

From what I've read people here generally acknowledge that considering the source the GOUT could've ended up worse, and that it's the best LD transfer available, but the reason they complain is that the GOUT should've never been sourced from an ancient LD transfer to begin with.

Not to mention that fan transfers are one thing, but an official release is a different matter altogether. The GOUT would've been great for a fan effort, but as it stands it's quite terrible. And useful for obvious reasons.

Ah, rehired is indeed new.

Here's the linkedin post I'm assuming MFM is talking about. Its the same woman who was mentioned earlier in the second comment (although that link no longer contains information about work on Star Wars) in this thread. I don't feel good about posting links to a persons' profile or saying their name online so I just included the above quote.

I don't see why since that's pretty much the point of social media. Especially of something along the lines of linkedin, unless you don't want work for some reason.

Sorry, I just checked the first page of the thread and her resume (from a different site) has already been posted here. The one I found is the same woman's linkedin page, but it says that she worked on Star Wars in early to mid 2013, which I believe is somewhat new because didn't we think that this Star Wars project was something from longer ago than that? This would mean that it is a Disney approved project, even if it did start under Lucas.

I'm pretty sure there's a few pages of people discussing something along those lines here. When it happened, why (someone suggested a token of good will on the part of LucasArts pre-Disney buyout, I think, etc.), is this even a new restoration and so on.

This is a 43 page thread so I'm sure it's probably been mentioned before, sorry if I was repeating things.

Basically, from what I can tell, half of this thread is all about reiterating the other half. So no worries ;)

Where is Kenny Baker on Ep7

Last time I saw Kenny Baker and Dave Prowse, they were both in wheelchairs.

I don't think David Prowse is in a wheelchair or otherwise has any trouble getting around (unless it is a very recent turn of events). I saw him in a YouTube video from last year where he puts on the Darth Vader costume and has a "lightsaber duel" with a fan:

http://youtu.be/rYgE-cvY57I

Are you sure you're not thinking of Peter Mayhew? He needs a cane to walk and is sometimes in a wheelchair.

Last I checked Peter Mayhew was after surgery and, supposedly, all fixed up. I hope he's still fine.

He probably picked someone's brain.

Short Round said:

Did the man you talked to know if this included the OOT or, just for curiosity's sake, the Holiday Special? I guess "everything" would include the OOT. I've always been skeptical that Lucas would just throw things that he didn't like (holiday special/OUT) in the dumpster, but I didn't know that things were being digitally preserved as well, even if they don't actually clean it up at all. If this is the case for the OUT then maybe that's what Lucas meant when he said that the current releases get "priority" over the classic versions of things. Maybe he meant that the SE's come first, and then when the time comes the classics will be released. I don't know, I might be putting more thought into this than George Lucas put into all of his SE changes combined

It's pure speculation on my part, but considering the scope of such a project it's probably easier to digitize everything they have rather than pick and choose. Also, I think even Lucas realized just how dumb destroying (or not saving/preserving/digitizing) your assets is, regardless of whether you like them or not.

Expect the SWHS getting an official release now that Disney's in charge, is what I'm saying.

I don't think Lucasfilm will ever release any versions but the original and the current version.

I have a hard time believing that the '11 versions are the final versions. NOBODY likes Vader saying no, Han shooting second, Hayden as Anakin's ghost, etc. If there's any versions that there's no market for, it's the '11 versions.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who actually like Hayden's ghost.

Yes I was surprised. Apparently one lives in Wisconsin and the other in Stuttgart.

Yup. And between them, they have a couple of hundred different accounts on TFN. Really strange people.

I expect the mono mix will get shafted.

I actually think that there's a good chance of the mono mix being included and it would make me happy beyond words, but I won't complain as long as one of the 19777 mixes is included.

Wasn't it said in some interview with Matthew Wood or somebody that when they were doing the sound mix for the 2011 Blu-Ray, they also digitized all previous sound mixes for the film?

If this does actually happen, I just hope the original films themselves are made available as their own set or sold individually and not in another megaset where I'm forced to purchase the prequels again.

Also, If Disney is doing this, This is the company who released The Lion King on Blu-Ray with missing VFX and The Little Mermaid with swapped shots in the wrong order and straight cuts when there should have been dissolves. It seems like even if this is really happening, there's lots of room for them to screw something up.

They digitized them, but only as 192kbps wma files, because George didn't think they needed to go any higher. They're old anyway and thus obviously sound like crap by modern standards.

You have a source for that info?

Of course, though it wishes to remain anonymous. But don't worry: that source has been verified by an anonymous source. It's legit info.

But I mean look, I'll believe it when I see it. And you know, I have grave doubts that they could do better than mverta (at least on Star Wars).

Oh, hey, look: it's been confirmed by anonymous sources. Brilliant, time to open the champagne!

More rumours is a good thing, though.

Dear OT Elitist Bigots...
Time

Bingowings said:

SirHenryPercy said:

NOTE: This forum is not directed towards people who merely like the original trilogy, dislike the prequel trilogy, and can move on with their lives. This is directed to the narrow minded, ignorant man children who attack anyone with a different opinion.

A long time ago, I used to think that the most annoying fanbase was the Twilight fanbase. Lord knows, I nearly punched a hole in my wall when I found out that one fangirl had claimed that Stephanie Meyer was a better writer than my favorite writer of all time, Stephen King. But after seeing the bigotry, hatred and ignorance from original trilogy elitists like many seen on this site, I came to the conclusion that you are worse.

Like I said, liking the original trilogy is one thing, but you people quite frankly act like schoolyard bullies. You saw a kid on the playground who liked something you didn't, and you proceeded to call him names, and attack him for not conforming. Which oddly enough probably happened to you for liking Star Wars when you were a kid. I suppose that what separates the rational, reasonable folks who love the OT from the close minded, childish freaks like the OT elitist bigots.

And don't even get me started on their ungratefulness. Refusing to just accept change, or even dislike change and admit that the creator or your beloved series should still be respected, you again childishly lash out at George Lucas merely because he's doing with his movies what he has the right to do. It's like a bunch of children, waking up on Christmas morning with a bountiful mass of presents underneath the Christmas tree. But when they find out that they didn't get the exact present that they wanted, they shout at their parents "I hate you! I'm never talking to you again!" It really is quite amusing, and one of the few times that OT bigots can actually contribute something to society.

And of course, like I implied earlier, OT bigots cannot handle a different opinion. It doesn't matter if you're a film student, a critic or a film professor, in the eyes of these depraved children, if you think the Star Wars prequels are good you are "stupid and have bad taste and should kill yourself" Yeah, you can love movies like Leaving Las Vegas, 21 Grams, Rear Window, Shattered Glass, One Flew over The Cuckoo's Nest, 12 Angry Men and Rebel Without A Cause, you can be a Shakespeare enthusiast, you can have a 4.0 GPA and be the most compassionate guy on the planet, but if you like these movies, the OT bigots will treat you with the contempt that is msot deserved of racists and homophobes. Hell, you guys (Again, talking to the elitists, not the fans) won't even ALLOW someone to give a dissenting opinion without schoolyard insults and attacks. In fact, I actually planned on giving my own opinions on the prequels and defenses in a respectful manner, but why bother? You're not interested in debating...You're interested in conforming to a single opinion based on vapid fanboyism and nostalgia. "Resistance is futile, you must assimilate!" ;)

So please, please go ahead. Insult me. Make fun of me. Makes jokes about prequel fans merely for being prequel fans. I look forward to laughing my ass of at my keyboard at your bigotry and rage.

Sincerely,

SirHenryPercy
