I’d love a link to your edit!
I’d love a link to your edit!
This is a good ambitious edit, and I understand that much of your time right now is working on a house. Totally get it!
As for this recent clip, I see you got some work cut out for ya to remove the time stamp and Rey in the “Map” room.
after watching it a few times, I like the direction it is going. I appreciate the scene effect during her “Vision Dream.”
I am not a skilled editer, but I am curious if maybe instead of that effect you did, would it be possible to add a little more of a grain affect as well as changing the coloring in those scenes? Maybe less color and more of a sepia or something that shows this is indeed a vision?
Also, earlier during Rey’s Vision during the lightsaber touch at Maz’s castle can have the same effect so it will accomplish two things: 1.) these force visions have the same “effect” on the screen and 2.) we know Rey is having some kind of vision at the end with Luke on the island.
Other than that, the rest of it is looking good! Just a thought I had.
Wow, that is great! Good word once again Poppa!
Fair enough, on all points, I suppose.
I appreciate your leveled headed response on all those points Hal.
As per what others have said, those suggestions would not be compatible with the direction of Hal’s edit, but sounds like a hybrid of Ivan and Poppaskietti’s edit.
The one I do like is the non-Leia Poppins scene being removed, but that’s not for this edit.
Well, I don’t plan to remove Phasma or the fight between her and Finn, so there’s nothing to worry about there.
The Luke Jakku quip is something I’ve hemmed and hawed over but I think it’s just not something that we would have seen in the OT, but that we have seen in the ST. So I’d prefer to keep Luke away from it since he doesn’t do it much. The reed gag later on seems more consequential and part of the point being made, so it feels different to me.
Whatever happens, I’ll get a solid workprint out before IX for anyone interested in having it for a countdown viewing.
I volunteer as tribute!
And I know I might sound like a broken record at this point, but I’ll mention it one more time - I’m a huge advocate for redubbing the “parking violation” alien on Canto Bight. Maybe it doesn’t bother other people the same way it bothers me, but his southern drawl really takes me out of things. Plus including some alien language with subtitles would give it some OT vibes.
I would love something done about that. the OT established that if you are not human, you don’t sound human. Of course there are varying degrees, either in language or accent, but there is a clear distinction between human and non human. The PT mostly followed this as well, minus the Pod Race Announcer in TPM. This character felt VERY out of place as well as goofy. He would be more appropriate for the MCU than Star Wars.
I wouldn’t mind a dub or something that gives him an alien voice, or at least a more “alien” accent than a straight up Southerner. If you closed your eyes, you would picture a human saying his lines, not a non-human.
The same thing occurs with SOLO with Rio Durrant. He felt very out of place as well.
I was impressed by how the scene played without Rey interpreting for Chewie, but I’ll see what I think in a while.
Maz’s comment and Rey asking about a cowl are both part of the film’s sexual undertones. I still really dislike the entire Maz scene, but if it must be kept then I want to keep the sexual humor.
Rey’s question to Ren is another example of her being somewhat prudish or new to sexuality, just like how she looks away from the walrus that Luke milks.
Can you post what it would look like with the interpretation to see?
As for the Cowl scene, I’m personally neutral on it, so with our without it is the same to me, so trust your judgment on that one!
As for the Maz scene, seriously, if the whole thing can be removed that would be a god send.
But Adywan, obviously the troopers are wearing perfect camouflage so you can’t see them!
Jokes aside adding some trooper and/or vehicles would be a great addition since it clearly isn’t heavily guarded per the conversation.
I am glad that the drive is going pretty well, I was very happy to contribute towards it and hope for some more to get this show on the road!
I like it Hal! I agree with Rogue’s take that the coin part doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.
Also just having Rose name the critters and not say anything else is a good touch as well.
The other option would be trying to remove as many scenes that shows Phasma, or cropping her out using the 4k version. I did a really quick overlook and there are a few areas where that is fairly easy to do, and others that would take some more work. Depending on my free time I can try to at least come up with ROUGH clips.
If you can remove Phasma completely, that would be ideal since Phasma was pretty much just thrown in the movie.
The difficult part would be to try and convince the audience if you were to recolor/redub/etc. Phasma that it is indeed someone else that is the same/similar rank. The issue is, her armor is very distinctive and it would be hard to explain that all Captains have that kind of armor.
Hey side note, Hal can I get a PM with a link to this one? The link I have gives me the error: The requested URL was not found on this server.
The work is so impressive, very impressive! The removal shots are perfect.
I do get Octo’s comment about adding something else just to really help cement the viewer this is not Chewie. If that is doable I think that will sell it completely without a doubt.
After they say they are to look for the code breaker, the scene cuts to BB-8 and the coin gag. Here is another attempt but adds a trimmed coin gag:

I’ve also trimmed it a bit more with another attempt, but I hit my weekly vimeo limit, so I will post it when I can!
Whoops I used up my weekly upload limited on Vimeo (free account). Once that is refreshed I’ll upload the third attempt that’s more in line with Hal’s latest post suggestion!
It’s a quiet day in the office, here is the second rough draft before I read your comment!
As for the coin gag, I have the scene cut to Finn and Rose after BB8 shakes his head but BEFORE the burp.

I’ll mess around with cutting it off per your suggestion!
I’ve posted this one Hal’s thread about adding a bit more Canto in the movie.
Here is my ROUGH draft of an edited scene:
The password is fanedit.
The focus on this edit is to remove the theme of “poor creatures” and “I want to do (and I will do) something about it!” (Basically remove another one of those agendas in this movie.) At the same time, we try to tamper the audience expectations that the heroes may do something about it since the agenda was heavily displayed … and in The Last Jedi each agenda was both introduced and answered. (Crying Porgy anyone?)
It now focuses on the ENTIRE situation of the Star Wars Universe at this time. Not just certain animals are mistreated, but people too. Recall, in The Force Awakens, the Republic doesn’t seem to care, or at least is not motivated to do something about the threat of the First Order. If you do not read any of the books, comics, articles or etc., we don’t really understand why. Since it would be better for the movies themselves explain SOME of the plot/situation/reason, let’s not have the audience need to look up “why” things are this way.
So, by reinstating some more of the Canto Bight section of the movie, we get more of an explanation why that is the case … why when the distress signal went out later in the movie, no one answered Leia’s call. The answer? Money. Power. Influence.
The Powers That Be do not wish to go against the First Order since they have a very profitable arrangement. Granted, this is not the most original idea, but it helps gives us an explanation on what’s going on with the current Star Wars Universe since Finn has been, in a sense, “sheltered” as a storm trooper in the First Order.
There still needs to be some tidying up, like removing the rolling coin sound from BB8. Also maybe some minor touches to some scene transitions with the music. But overall, this clip gives us an idea.
A bonus aspect of this edited scene is we get to see our Jedi Boi. This helps “sell” the ending of the movie. Here we see he tries to stand up against “evil” but fails. However, after Luke’s heroic stand against the First Order (evil) that sparks life into the “new” rebellion, there is hope that motivates our Jedi Boi after hearing that story.
I’ll post one with the populace being worse in there, that does fuel Finn’s line more about why she hates it so much. So I’ll mock on up with that.
I’ll mess around with a shortened coin sequence as well and see how that looks.
The last one is a toughy. Mainly because of her line inside the casino after the “Fathier” quake that prompted them to go outside. I’ll try it out on removing her two lines and see how it feels. It may, or may not, feel strange she does not elaborate on those critters.
But hey, it doesn’t hurt to try it out and see. Thanks for the feedback Hal!

Before I get the right source to play around with the Canto Bight Section, I’d like some thoughts about what makes the balcony scene lead to the expectation something is going to, or needs to be done, with the Fathiers from being abused.
My first thought to help alleviate the expectation/need for the Fathier escape/release/attack on society is removing Rose’s line of “Wanting to punch the city.” That in itself is an easy removal since we cue it BB-8 rolling up to get their attention about the code breaker. I would need help with removing the “rolling coin sound” that BB-8 makes. If I remember correctly, I think Ridley did this when they found the Code Breaker?
Lastly, in the back of my mind it seems we would need to remove maybe just one instance of the Fathiers being ripped, mainly the Fathier Jockey you see. I would keep the other “whipping” when it came to the Fathier Keeper with the Jedi Boi and crew, since it not only focuses on cruelty of not just the Fathiers but of the “lowly” people like what the First Order does and it’s correlation with planets and society like Canto Bight. Also another positive of having this we get to see our Jedi Boi before the very ending, which we get that connection of him from the removal of this scene and later in the Stable.
This is my current thinking that will take some work since there is an overlap of Rose’s dialogue and the sound of the Fathier cries and electric whip.
I whole heartedly agree with both Hals and Snooker’s reasoning for the removal. Of all the cameos weve seen in both the prequels and new ones, this one really shrinks a supposedly large and diverse galexy(ies).
I agree with Hal on this … please … no garage scene!
That was a fun clip. I admit it kind of reminded me of like a Star Wars game back on the PC/Console of those Jedi Knight days!
I understand what Juan means, for a first time viewer it seems like something is missing or it was a wasted opportunity or something without a little more. I may have some free time this week and come up with some ideas and upload some clips on this thread if that is ok with you Hal!
