I really like the way DominicCobb moved that sequence to just before Kylo reforges his helmet along with the new vision sequence he created. I wonder if there would be anyway to retain the benefits of his approach while also fixing the apparent continuity issue of him consulting the helmet after he realizes Palpatine is behind Vader “speaking to him”.

I liked what he did since it was a better motivation-tool scene for him to reconstruct his helmet out of no where.

However, it still would seem “off” that he would still consult with Vader’s helmet knowing its been palps the whole time …

Granted, it is an improvement since it at least gives some reasoning for him repairing his helmet to go back to being a ‘monster’ but still leaves the issue in the air “why are you consulting with that thing still, its been Palps manipulating you the whole time. Why?!”

Ideally I would like that consulting scene prior to palps.

Or someone seamlessly put on his helmet during the whole Mustafar scenes and meeting with palps. That’s no problem right? 😉

I have always been on the side of removing the Mustafar sequence

But the idea of moving the Vader helmet scene during the opening, it could sell the idea to me for keeping it. Plus … even plot wise it makes more sense especially since Kylo went to the helmet AFTER is contact with Palps … so why consult his “grandfathers” guidance knowing its not him with it being Palps behind it? Didn’t make sense.

The other benefit of it being moved is it frees things up with Rey and her “dark” version … which the audience member could connect that since Palp has “revealed” himself she is getting this vision or whatever … kinda like the flood gates have opened or something.

Anyway, I am liking this idea of moving that footage to earlier. I may play around with it myself.

Now that I think of it it would be nice if we could figure out some solution(s) to Mustafar. I do have a couple ideas in mind.

I’ve seen some other people post tests were they added more establishing shots culled from other sources. I think that’s probably your best bet. There is a canon reason why Mustafar looks the way it does in this movie but for someone only tuned into the films it’s a bit confusing.

Im definitely more on the “movie canon” side of things. The people in the audience should not have to look into movie, comics, tweets, video games for major plot things, or at least significant bits of information for a movie.

So yeah, it is either adding some establishing shots or removing the whole section and just have the info about it in the crawl that Kylo has obtained a/grandfathers/snokes/insert-something’s Sith Wayfinder. At least that’s my personal view.

So I am going to write this down one more time… It got over looked probably because I rarely offer any suggestions, but I thought this idea of mine was pretty solid regarding moving the chess scene.

The idea of moving the chess scene is awesome and its wonderfully executed! I do have an idea… I think it would be great if there is a way to add a clip with R2 and 3PO watching the game. They are the only constant in the saga so they should be there in the end with their friends. Below is a scene from AOTC where 3PO tells R2, “for a mechanic you do a excessive amount of thinking.” There is enough dialog from 3PO to make him say, “For a Wookie you do a excessive amount of thinking.” Then you can do a cut to R2 doing a silly chirping noise like the link below. In that way they’re all together and all four of them are giving Chewie a hard time. Just like a bunch of siblings.

My thoughts are you see Chewie thinking then it cuts to 3PO and he says his line, then cut to R2 making a silly chirp noise basically agreeing with 3PO, then we cut to Poe and Fin, then the final scene with Rey and BB-8 Thoughts?

C3PO:

R2D:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBzQQkcZZOE&list=PLs_YojqvcFd-98ggemDm1ktsVGcjxdDBW&index=9

I like that idea a lot, for those two being the "longest running characters … they were pretty much left in the dust at the end (R2 got the short end of the stick the whole time pretty much) So having them would be fantastic with the reordering of the Chess scene.

Ok Jonh, when you are done with the Force Ghosts here is your next task. 😉

Thinking about the crawl, would it be “too on the nose” about an imperial fleet. Granted, I like this A WHOLE LOT BETTER than the actual crawl, but could the focus be more about Kylo trying to become stronger in the Dark Side or Sith-ness? Something more on the lines of finding the Sith home world or something to increase his power/knowledge.

This kind of mirrors what we first thought (through Han) that Luke went to the “first” Jedi temple/planet to gain knowledge. Instead, here Kylo is wanting to gain knowledge for power by going to the “beginning” of Sith. It may be a better connection with the Sith Wayfinder to lead him to the “Sith homeworld”

It also kinda mirrors Rey’s use of the Jedi text, the ancient Jedi text from the beginning that leads her to her “new” powers and talents.

Just a thought I had.

So both the Emperor AND a giant fleet is more of a “Surprise” reveal for both the audience and Kylo himself.

Both his mentors are gone and he still has much to learn to gain more power, since we know he too wants to be as strong OR stronger than his grand father, Darth Vader, so he needs at least some guidance or learning more things to increase his power.

I like this direction a lot. It also can fit really nice with a “just Rey edit.

Anyway, please continue this great work!

EDIT:

Had some time and played around with splitting the chess scene. It can be done via CONCEPT clips:

1st section of movie:

Remaining part to be used for end on Tatooine.

The last clip does have the beeping sound, I clipped it as is to see what visual footage can be used for whatever and have the beeping sound removed and ambient noise to be used if need be.

Haha, Hal! Hadn’t thought of that about jumping to hyperspace in atmosphere. I don’t remember where you stood on the lightspeed skipping scene (probably heavily trimming?) but didn’t they jump in and out of a few atmospheres in that scene?

(Although I guess that was an emergency… and damaged the ship)

Just remove the whole chase section. Characters can talk about it during that argument segment, but take out the whole thing after the ties “follow.” That way it leaves it up to the imagination on what that all meant since the execution was so … bad. So, so bad.

First, Jonh, that’s already a huge improvement on Luke’s hair. Just toning it down was nice. Very good.

As for Hal’s comment about the Falcon … I get what you mean by that now that your brought that point up.

Would having it just go towards one of the suns until it fades away work? Then the ending shot are the twin suns?

EDIT: Also to bring up some of your points Hal with your goals for both edits, as for this point:

The hangar (“You’re his granddaughter.” This one needs to have something dramatic enough not to feel hollow)

Depending on how much tweaking to do with ability to do, timing, etc that still has some kind of impact … could the line simply be “You’re his legacy”?

I am leaning towards the no Murkiness, it seems like the heads pop out too much, kinda like “hey, look at my face!” while the full body ones seems more … natural? (Terrible word choice)

As for you Chase, with the whole “Why clone Jango when you can clone more force sensitive/palps” … the logic the movie is showing that trying to clone force sensitive/ Sith Lords is they degrade bad. Really bad.

But then again, trying to rely too much on logic is not productive for this movie. 😉

Ok here is a “more subtle” approach to it. It’ll be something that a person may or may not notice the voice for it. If this route is better, or at least agreeable, there is a variety of “grunt” clips I can use.

Thank goodness for Republic Commando and those who take the time to make these sound clip resources.

@Hal’s first post

Reasonable question about why use them. The main reasons I came up with playing with this idea was …

1.) Already crazy that Palps has a Sith butt load of ships. With that butt load, you need even more butt loads of people for both piloting … and troops. Lots of them. Cloning helps with that.

2.) Cloning is brought back, a la Palps. He is a clone … so he and his crew still have the cloning ability, so why not?

3.) For “movie” cannon, viewers watching these movies know that “That voice is a clones voice!” so we connect that dot.

4.) In TFA, Kylo mocks Hux about using a clone army, inferring that the FO method may not be as good as clones.

5.) We like clones.

That’s about it. It is more of a fill in the gap on why the heck there are so many “baddies” out of no where. TROS already doesn’t make sense and we all understand we have to let go of common sense, but this is a minor thing that is easy to implement.

There aren’t really any other scenes to add these clone sounds, since we are talking about like 10 seconds worth of Sith troop footage. I did add a Wilhelm scream when a group of them were grenaded by Jana … but that’s all I got.

As for Hals second post: I would LOVE to see Rey’s lighting be yellow. (Also remove the crackle, but the yellow lighting is a cool concept.

I would also think it would be cool at the end, with Jonh’s footage using the Force Ghost to help out Rey, having the final lighting push back be white or something would be neat too.

A simple side idea that may have been talked about either on this thread or Hals … but I kinda wanted to sell that the “Sith” troopers are clones … which could help sell why there were so many of them. There is not a lot of footage of the red troopers, so there was one spot I used a republic commando sound file to incorporate a simple line and a grunt.

I wanted a simple line so people can pick up on it since a grunt sound is so quick and people wouldn’t catch it … but I dunno if it makes it either silly or too “fan edit-y”
